You’re holed up in an old farmhouse on the outskirts of Hawkins. It’s not exactly remote, but the nearest building is little more than a speck on the horizon so you feel pretty isolated. Owens organised it, explaining it would be a good idea for the older members of the party to lay low for a little while. Nancy had put forward an excellent argument for remaining with her family, but you, Robin and Steve had reluctantly packed up some of your belongings and relocated here. For how long, you don’t know.
It’s no palace. The wood-built building is certainly past its best, the yellowing 50s kitchen barely functional and the faded decor not to anyone's taste. But it’s (mostly) warm, (usually) dry, and most importantly, it feels safe. Which is something you all need after the events of the past few months.
You’re all acutely aware of the obvious gap in your merry band. Owens had insisted that the three of you didn’t attend the funeral, but he’d involved you as much as he could, ferrying messages between you and the kids and Wayne, discussing what he would’ve wanted to wear (you all agreed on his spare Hellfire shirt and leather jacket, knowing he’d never want to be separated from either, plus a brand new, government-funded pair of black 501s), and sneaking mementoes to you with Wayne’s approval.
Mike and Will have taken charge of his D&D paraphernalia, Dustin got his wallet chain (and wears it with literally everything, even his Weird Al shirts and colourful shorts), and Lucas opted for a small pocket knife. You, Steve and Robin each have one of his rings. Steve and Robin keep theirs in their rooms, but you wear the silver skull every day. It’s too big for your fingers, and is even a little loose on your thumb, but that’s where you keep it, spinning it to ease your anxiety, and smoothing the pads of your fingers over its bumpy surface to remind you of the friend you’ve lost. Rueing the fact that you always wanted him to be more than that, but never had the chance to find out whether he felt the same.
The kids visit periodically, even staying over sometimes, nobody expecting anyone to be watching the comings and goings of a bunch of nerdy teens. Nancy drops them off, sometimes staying, sometimes not. On this occasion she’d dropped and run, explaining that she was going to visit Max in the hospital tomorrow, spending some quality girly time with her. Lucas, who usually spent every spare moment by her bedside, was going to spend the weekend here, after Max, still seriously ill but now well enough to communicate, insisted that he needed to spend at least a bit of time with his old friends.
Tonight, you’d had a movie marathon, Keith developing an uncharacteristically generous side since everything kicked off and periodically dropping off and collecting piles of VHS tapes. Not quite generous enough to bring you any brand new releases, but even things you’ve seen before are better than the ‘sweet FA’ you’d have available given the nonexistent TV reception around here.
Popcorn litters the floor and the saggy furniture, as do gangly boys and a long-haired girl. Jane has commandeered the sole armchair, sitting in it cross-legged, and you, Steve and Robin are squashed onto the sofa with an equally squashed Dustin, the latter insisting that there was definitely room for one more.
Mike and Will are on the floor between the sofa and the old, battered coffee table. Mike’s hunched over a bowl of chips that he’s shovelling in, and Will is leaning against your legs, you stroking his hair in a way you know he finds comforting. Lucas is lounging on the floor at the side of the table, his long body stretched out and his head supported on threadbare throw pillows.
The gentle patter of drizzly rain against the windows and roof, and the crackle of the open fire, one of your only sources of heating, gives the evening a cosy feel, though you hope the rain doesn’t get any heavier as you don’t entirely trust the roof over the rear extension to cope with much more meteorological abuse.
You’ve just finished Raiders Of the Lost Ark and Steve has got up to swap it out for The Stuff, when there’s a strong gust of wind and the rainfall picks up significantly. Great, you think, the weather gods definitely weren’t listening to your silent pleas.
None of you notice Jane stiffening in her seat and shifting uncomfortably.
Under the lashing of the wind and rain there’s a sudden noise at the front door. Not urgent, not loud, just two soft thuds. If the kids had been roughhousing or the film had been on you may even have missed them.
You all look at each other, instantly and equally on edge, and all hoping that somebody, anybody, will provide a simple explanation for this.
Steve’s the first to speak. Jaw slack and brow furrowed, he asks the room, “Uhh, did anyone order takeout?”
There’s a cacophony of ‘no’s’ and shaken heads, before another soft thud is heard, just one this time.
Steve steels himself, not for the first time realising that it’s his responsibility to investigate the possibly terrifying, and potentially life-threatening, situation. He stands from his position by the video player and moves towards the door, fingertips skimming the top of the bat that’s always to the side of it, before closing his hand softly around the handle.
He pulls back the sliding bolts before twisting the lock and pulling the door open just a crack, leaving the chain on. The noise of the weather increases in volume, but other than that there’s no indication of what’s on the other side.
Steve has his back to you so you don’t see his eyes go wide, but you do hear a soft, “Wh- What the fuck?”
Robin being Robin, and perpetually thinking about her stomach, she says,
“What is it, doofus? Pleeease tell me it’s Jonathon and Argyle dropping by from Cali with some delicious Surfer Boy pizza??”
“Uh, no, it’s, uh- You know what? Maybe you should just come and see for yourself. Wait, scratch that, just the adults.”
Knowing this will unwittingly pique the interest of the kids more than if he’d just allowed everyone to come look, you and Robin glance at each other before quickly rising and moving to the door.
Steve closes it and takes off the chain, opening it wide as the three of you arrive, the kids following close behind and trying to look between you.
There, hunched, shivering, soaking wet and covered in mud, is your friend. The one who’d died saving the town. The one they’d buried only a few days ago, after he’d been lying on a slab in a lab somewhere for weeks.
Eddie.

Eddie talks about feeling like a coward and Steve is just completely flabbergasted because Eddie "stands-on-tables-and-screams-about-conformity" Munson, Eddie "takes-his-lunchbox-full-of-drugs-to-school" Munson, Eddie "wears-rings-and-nail-polish-and-eyeliner-and-long-hair-in-conservative-indiana" Munson thinks he is a COWARD?!?!?!

Sad, gay boy falls in love with his straight, best friend and gets rejected? Tired. Boring. Sad, gay boy falls in love with his best friend and finally gets a win when the friend turns out to be gay, too? Phenomenal. Never gets old.

maybe this is a hot take. i don’t know. but mike is so much more queercoded than will. the only reason the GA won’t see it is because he’s dating el. but if will wasn’t canonly gay…. cmon you can’t tell me he’s more obvious than mike. sure the rain fight gave away a lot but didn’t it do that for mike too? and every single ‘weird’ moment in s4 was mikes fault bc will was being so normal. mike has the biggest most embarrassing crush and it’s so obvious i love him so much he’s so dumb

when I say that Will being canonically gay in stranger things is the biggest proof we need for byler it’s not simply because we know he is gay and that’s it - there is context that comes from being in fandoms for something like 12 yrs or more.
first of all, I’ve started watching ST because of people talking about will and byler on twitter (in july), as a person who barely knew anything about it (I didn’t even know mike and el were a couple, so I was super surprised they decided to make it romantic in s1 when I didn’t really feel like it would happen).
i was a sherlock fan who shipped sherlock/john. i’ve shipped non-canon couples for a long time (fandom spaces are queer spaces a lot of times). i know what it feels like to read things from a text that could imply things - a text that could be queercoded, depending on interpretation. i know what it feels like to have fun with fanon and ship things that are potentially there, but not textually canon (like steddie or ronance, imo). it’s fun and it’s mostly harmless, until the writers decide to use it as queerbait to make their fandom stay with them for a long time because they’re rooting for their queer ship (i think supernatural is the worst example of this, as they confirmed the one-sided love and then killed the queer character and sent him to hell LMAOOO). those are milking the fandoms, knowing the strongest core of a fandom is the hardcore ones (many queers) and not the casual public.
i’m a big fan of hannibal, yuuri!! on ice and she-ra, three shows that are mostly queercoded until they aren’t (and they confirm the queer ship to be canon). i swear, people CAN tell. you can see when there is a creator and writer and team who truly wants to tell a queer story/relationship, even when they can’t show it openly (like hannibal or yoi). as a person of the community myself, i’ve been able to tell it was canon. it’s different from fans just shipping things, or queerbaiting, there is care and intention and writing and parallels and romantic framing and so many things that make you see that it is there.
(now, for byler i hope it’s different. every straight couple in ST has at least one kiss and i think byler HAS to have at least one (dramatic, passionate, show-stopping) kiss because it would be totally unfair if they don’t. they have to be totally and utterly canon)
what is different about byler and stranger things, compared to sherlock or other shows for the straights?
it’s will being canonically gay. bbc sherlock would never do that. bbc sherlock would mock feelings. he would laugh about love. he would probably be even a bit homophobic, just for the sake of it.
and it’s not just will being canonically gay, it’s his love for mike being canon. i’m sure other people have said it, but will’s love for mike is NOT JUST A CRUSH. it’s not ridiculed. sure, it’s used to forward a straight ship (that is sinking), but the story is not finished yet and i want to believe that byler is endgame and the writing in s4 was meant to 1) leave things uncomplete and unseattled between mike and will, between lies and non-confessed feelings; and will being in the middle of a relationship that is sinking. 2) mike responding to will’s feelings of love and to no one else, not even el begging for him to say he loves her. 3) making EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHERS feel sorry for will. cry for will. pity will. root for will. root for GAY WILL. (people who think he is straight and he loves el don’t count, those are morons)
will’s love for mike is LOVE in capital letters. it is not a crush. it’s never treated as something to laugh about, or something like a one-sided crush like Dustin’s crush for Max or Steve’s crush for Robin, those feelings are clearly more superficial and you can see that they’re not gonna happen from miles away. will’s love is A LOVE THAT MOVES MOUNTAINS. it’s totally romantic. deeply rooted. it’s like those loves you can see between jancy or lumax or even more jopper in s4, a love that saves one another, that makes people do crazy things, a love that is inherently part of the character, that makes them FEEL and DO and LIVE and you can’t imagine them not being in love with that person.
these writers know how to write that type of love. each canon ship they made (even s1/2 milkvan in some ways), i’ve loved it. they know what they’re doing, how to make it feel like it’s true love even without writing grand love confessions or making them kiss every other episode. it’s in THE NARRATIVE, the things the characters do and say and imply.
and even more, about byler... something i wrote in a fic i’ll never finish but imo it’s the biggest point we can take away from will’s love and confession in s4. WILL SEES MIKE. will sees mike for who he is and loves him anyways. he sees the best and worst in him and still loves him and knows him and grounds him to reality and tells Mike how he could be the best version of himself, pushing him to fight for it (you are the heart). will’s love is ancient and deep, it’s a love that we don’t even know when it started, it’s always been there, it’s always been part of will (and part of mike, because it IS MUTUAL). it’s like breathing. like the sun every morning, it’s just there. it’s not going away. it’s not even a choice, at this point, there is an helplessness in the love will feels - it’s too big and too much for him he would love to run away from it, but still he can’t deny his heart.
and that’s why i think byler is endgame. because will is canonically gay, and he is in love, and no one is making fun of him for that. his love for mike is serious, profound, romantic, genuine. it makes you cry and root for him. it’s LOVE. the strongest of forces. and every byler scene is made with care. it’s never taken lightly, not even their fights, they always matter. there is no mocking in there. no sneer. it’s treated genuinely. almost like the creators are telling you: “look here, look at them, it matters. it matters to them and it should matter to you. there is something serious brewing here, and it is romantic love”

strange sleeping arrangements
In which Will and Mike get Murray’d and shenanigans ensue (this is not canon compliant).  I wrote this at 2 AM and it’s pretty messy but I tried.  I usually don’t write for other fandoms besides anipoke so we’ll see how this goes
TW/CW: mild swearing
Words: 3k
Mike Wheeler had a fairly large family, he liked to think.  He had two sisters and, obviously, two parents, making his family a family of five.  What he did not expect, however, was his already fairly large family of five to become a family of nine in the span of two days.  After the whole mess with Hawkins and the Upside Down opening up a massive gate through the entire town, the Wheeler house had been temporarily utilized for the Byers + Murray Bauman, for reasons that Mike could only decipher as “needing to relocate before the Russian government concocts a plan to assassinate him”.  As far as Mike could tell, he was the only one worried about this, as Joyce, who had also been involved with the whole Russia scheme, didn’t seem as pressed as Murray was.
As far as sleeping arrangements went, Mike’s mother had permitted Nancy and Jonathan to sleep in the same room only because of limited space, Joyce had gotten Holly’s room while Karen and Holly got what would normally be Mike’s parents’ room.  Ted Wheeler was perfectly content sleeping on the lazy boy.  As for Murray and Will, well, it was a bit more complicated.  Every time his mother told him he’d be sharing a room with Will, he physically recoiled.
What was wrong with him?
“Mike, why are you so resistant to sharing your room with Will? He’s our guest, for God’s sake.  Have some hospitality,” Karen scolded, shooting Mike a disapproving glare.
“It’s- it’s just-” Mike really had no explanation for it.  The thought of doing such a thing, though he’d done it so many times before with all of the sleepovers he’d had with Will over the years, it scared him.  It scared him and shook him to his core and he didn’t know why.
Well, he sort of did know why, but he pretended he didn’t.
“It’s fine, Mrs. Wheeler.  I can just sleep in the basement,” Will chimed in.  His voice had an edge to it that Mike couldn’t seem to place.
Before Mike could say anything, Murray was in the doorframe leading into the kitchen, a bottle of what looked to be vodka clutched tightly in his hands as he scanned the room with a look of utter disapproval.
“Nope.  Not happening.  I am not, under any circumstance, having a twelve year old sleep in a dirty basement with me.”
“I’m fifteen,” Will corrected.
“Same difference!”
Mrs. Wheeler physically cringed at the sight of Murray, muttering a sort it out between the three of you before briskly exiting the kitchen.  Murray rolled his eyes, strutting into the kitchen and opening the fridge, clearly looking for some sort of food to combat the vodka.
Mike stole a glance over at Will, who had already been staring at him.  He quickly looked away, suddenly feeling a tightening in his chest.
Things had been different after El had fought Vecna.  Things had been different after Will had showed him the painting.
Hell, things had been different since that day Will had gotten back from the Upside Down.
Mike didn’t seem to have an ounce of hospitality left in him, and all he wanted to do was slam the door of his room in Will’s face and tell him to never walk in it, ever.
“Mike,” Will whispered, glancing at Murray to make sure he wasn’t listening (he was busy slugging vodka and toasting Eggo waffles), “what’s wrong with you? You’ve been acting strange since we got back.” Will sighed, furrowing his brows at Mike. “Actually, you’ve been acting strange since you came to visit us.  What’s up with you?”
Mike clenched his fists so hard that he thought the veins in his hand might explode. “Nothing.  Nothing’s wrong.  My room is just messy.  I-” Mike swallowed hard, knowing damn well that wasn’t the reason, “I- uh- I wouldn’t want you staying in it.”
Will looked unconvinced. “Are you sure?”
The tightening in Mike’s chest seemed to suddenly explode. He stood up, slamming both hands down on the countertop in front of him. “I told you, nothing’s wrong!”
Will jumped, looking rather hurt by Mike’s sudden outburst.  He was about to say something more, but before he could, the sound of a toaster popping on the other side of the kitchen startled both boys.  Murray turned around, taking a sip of vodka and a bite of his now freshly-toasted waffle, raising an eyebrow at the two.
“Lover’s quarrel?”
The two boys glanced at each other with looks on par with what the actual hell is he talking about and both shouted “NO!” in unison at the man standing before them.
“My, my, no need to get so defensive! I was simply making an observation.” Murray shrugged, taking another bite of his Eggo. “You two argue like a pair of moody teenagers who are secretly in love with one another.  One of them,” he motioned to Mike, who visibly flinched, “is emotionally constipated when it comes to love because of, let me guess, his parents don’t actually love each other and he grew up with the expectation that his future “true love” would be exactly like that, so he needs a cute little fluffy emotional baggage compartment,” this time, Murray motioned to Will, who looked rather taken aback,  “to reassure him that he’s worth every penny of love because, oh my god, he’s head over heels for said boy and would do absolutely anything for him, even if it means shouldering the weight of his emotionally constipated love-of-his-life, who, by the way, probably hasn’t taken into account that he’s trauma dumping on a person who already has enough trauma as it is.”
The three sat in silence.  Mike looked over at Will, who was frozen on the spot, a clear, deep shade of red occupying his cheeks.  Mike opened his mouth to say something more, but found that all words escaped him.
Because, goddamnit, Murray had somehow gotten everything that was going on in his head into words.  Odd words, but words nonetheless.
Mike wanted to die.
Murray sighed. “The point is,” he said, swallowing the last bits of Eggo, “I don’t want a hopelessly in love twelve year old sleeping in the same room as me.  I left my adolescence long ago- I don’t want to have to relive it.  So for Pete’s sake, just share a goddamn room.”
With that, Murray retreated to the basement, still carrying the bottle of vodka in his hand.  Will and Mike looked at each other, then looked away, then looked at each other again before Mike sighed.
“Just take my room. I’ll take the basement.  I’m going to bed.”
Will was about to protest, but Mike was already making his way down the basement steps.  Truthfully, Mike just wanted to get out of the situation as soon as possible, even if that meant sharing a basement with none other than Murray Bauman.
**
Mike couldn’t sleep.  The one very obvious reason why he couldn’t sleep was because of the fact that Murray snored extremely loudly.  Mike was surprised he hadn’t woken up the entire house.
The second reason (which, coincidentally, also had to do with Murray) was that he couldn’t stop thinking about the things Murray had said, and how spot-on they had been.
He was “emotionally constipated”, even if he hated to admit it to himself.  His parents had never loved each other- his mom had married his dad for the money and that was about it.  And yeah, okay, he had relied on Will for like, basically all of his emotional support throughout the years.  He’d never actually talked to El about that stuff because she had so much trauma already from quite literally being raised in a lab and he wasn’t about to compare his own problems to…that.  Maybe that was why his relationship with El had seemed so different lately, why his confession of “love” hadn’t felt right at all and had just felt like it needed to be there so that El wouldn’t die fighting Vecna.  He truly cared about El, but deep down, he knew he wouldn’t be able to love her in the way she so clearly loved him.  And that was something that terrified him to his core.  He wanted her to be happy, and he feared telling her the truth would devastate her.
But what about Will?  Mike realized that since the day Will had come back from the Upside Down, he had been, as Murray described, been treating him as somewhat of an “emotional baggage compartment”.  Only there to help Mike through pointless relationship problems with El, when he’d really been neglecting checking in to see if Will had been okay through it all.
“I’m such an asshole,” Mike murmured to himself, rubbing his temple with his fingers.
He shot up from his sleeping bag, deciding that it wasn’t worth it trying to sleep with his thoughts, and quietly creeped up the basement stairs in order to not wake his rather odd guest.  If anyone saw him, he could just say he was getting water.  Which, honestly, could really help as a distraction from the situation he was in right now.  The pitter-patter of rain sounded outside the window, which only fueled the mood even more.
However, his endeavor was quickly put to a stop when he noticed a familiar face also standing in the kitchen, looking just as dumbfounded as he was.
“Hi,” Will uttered, a glass of what Mike hoped was water and not Murray’s vodka clutched tightly in hand.
“Hey,” Mike croaked in response.
“I was just-”
“Oh, yeah, sorry.  I was just- uh- getting water. Yeah.”
“Oh.  Here.” Will quickly filled a cup for Mike and passed it to him.  The brush of Will’s fingers against his sent chills up Mike’s spine, though he tried not to show it.
“Thanks.”
The two sat in silence, awkwardly sipping their individual cups of water before Mike decided to break the tension.
“About what he said-”
“Don’t worry about it,” Will interrupted, diverting his gaze from Mike. “It’s- it’s not true, anyways.”
“No, no, it is,” Mike replied.  Will’s heart fluttered for a moment before Mike quickly caught himself. “I mean, the stuff about the emotions.  And everything.  I’m- I’m sorry if I keep using you as a “baggage compartment”, or whatever he said.  I’ve been an ass to you and you’ve been so tolerating of it and I’m sorry.”
Will was unsure of what to say, so he just nodded.  Mike had been an ass to him and still, all he wanted to do was grab his dumb face and kiss him.  He hated it.
“Will?” Mike placed a hand on his friend’s shoulder, snapping Will out of his daze. “You okay?”
Will jumped, turning red in the face before jerking his shoulder away. “Fine.  Just tired.  Goodnight.”
**
Without another word, Will turned and walked back to Mike’s room, leaving the latter standing in the kitchen.  He didn’t bother looking back at him in fear of doing something he would probably regret.  Will slammed the door to the room rather loudly.  He still wanted to punch Mike for hesitating in letting him share it.
Why did he hesitate, anyways?
He sat on the edge of the bed, the bed he’d half grown up in.  He’d had countless sleepovers and hangouts with Mike in this bed, but now it just felt empty.  Empty and sad.  The rain that was currently pouring outside didn’t help the mood.  Will’s mind drifted, and he was brought back to the fated day, the day where it was pouring outside and all he had wanted to do was play DND with Mike and Lucas, then Mike had said that…thing to him, and he’d left.  And then, in a pure fit of rage…he’d destroyed Castle Byers.
“It’s not my fault you don’t like girls!”
Will buried his head in his hands, sighing shakily.  He knew harboring feelings for Mike would only lead to heartbreak.  He knew, and still, his crush only continued to grow.  He’d been absolutely heartbroken when Mike had begun dating El.  Whenever the phone rang, Will always became hopeful that Mike was calling for him, but it was never the case.  It was always El.
Murray was right.  Right about everything.
Without thinking, Will walked over to the door, placing his hand on the doorknob.  He needed to say something.  If he didn’t, he feared he never would.  Just as he swung the door open, however, he was met with a pair of brown eyes staring back at him.  He blinked, trying to process the sight.
“Hi,” Mike said, a smile curving at his lips.
“Hi,” Will echoed, suddenly realizing how close the two were.
Mike visibly hesitated before talking again. “Murray was right.”
“You’ve said that.” “No.  I mean…about everything.”
Unsure how to respond, Will stood in the doorframe like an idiot, watching as Mike clearly had some sort of mental battle that he couldn’t see very well on the surface.  He exhaled deeply, making direct eye contact with Will.
“I hope you thought he was right too.”
“What do you-”
Will was cut off by a pair of lips on his.  He froze for a second, processing the action, before feeling his entire body melt into it.  However, just as soon as it had started, Mike pulled away, eyes wide, as if in shock over what he himself had just done.
“Holy shit,” Mike murmured, observing Will’s expression (which was unreadable to him), “holy shit, I’m so sorry.”
Will couldn’t help but grin at Mike’s awkwardness, gently snaking an arm around his neck and pulling him so close that their foreheads touched.  Both boys’ breathing was incredibly shaky as they stared at each others’ lips.
“Yeah, I think Murray was onto something,” Will chuckled.
“Think so?” Mike replied. “I couldn’t sleep down there anyway, he snores so goddamn loud.”
At this, both laughed in unison, though rather quietly so they didn’t wake up the house.  All of a sudden, their laughter stopped as Will focused on Mike’s lips.  His voice could barely be heard above the pouring rain, but Mike managed to make it out.
“It’s always been you,” Will breathed.
“I know,” Mike whispered, “I know.”
Will leaned in first this time, drawing Mike closer to close the gap between the two.   Mike sighed into the kiss, eliciting a smile from Will as he reached up to run his hands through Mike’s curls.  Mike gently cupped Will’s face in his hands, drawing him ever closer.
It started sweet and gentle, but gradually, both became more desperate.  Will pulled back, suddenly realizing as he heard the creak of a door down the hallway that the bedroom door was still very much open and that anyone walking past would see the two of them making out.
“Shit.  Close the door.”
Mike laughed, quickly slamming the door shut and locked.  Before he had time to refocus himself on Will, he was pinned against a wall as Will kissed him desperately.  Mike was grabbing his shirt, pulling him closer.  He swiped his tongue along Will’s lip, asking for entrance, which only served to deepen their kiss more.  Finally, after what seemed like hours, both pulled away, breathing heavy as they tried to put lost air back in their lungs.
“Well.  Shit,” Mike breathed.
“Shit,” Will agreed.
“This means I can stay in my own bedroom now, right?”
“Shut up,” Will laughed, pressing a kiss onto Mike’s lips.
“Also,” Mike started, “what- what does this mean?”
“It means we just made out for a good five minutes because of a man in your kitchen who drank too much vodka.”
Mike laughed, but his expression soon turned serious. “No. Really.  What does this mean?”
Will stayed silent for a moment.  His hands were still scrunched up in Mike’s shirt.  His heart was still beating a mile a minute.  His lips were still red from making out with his crush since, well, forever.
“I- I don’t know,” Will admitted.
Mike wrapped his arms around Will, this time just pulling him in for a simple hug. “Okay.  I understand. I mean, we are kind of in the middle of the apocalypse right now.  And my house is overflowing with people and if we keep doing this we’ll probably get caught.”
The two laughed, staying like that, hugging each other, in the middle of Mike Wheeler’s room.  Both could’ve honestly stayed like that forever.
“I guess we have Murray to thank,” Mike joked.
“And the sleeping arrangements that someone refused to comply to,” Will added.
Sharing a room with Will Byers was taking him back to old times, sure, but as Mike kissed Will once more, he felt it.  Something he hadn’t felt with El or anyone else.
Mike didn’t mind these new feelings.  They were better than anything he could’ve ever imagined.

having a sense that people dying/being hurt is some how adjacently your fault (El is literally shown during this moment in the void while Max is talking, too)

And even trying to lean on memories of your partner because the "something that is hurting them" got you into a serious Vecna-bind…albeit to wildly different results.

Like???? El is depressed, and her “catching a break” happened solely when she got to have Hopper back in the end (almost the same as Will catching his when Jonathan talked to him in the SBP). Even the arc El goes through start of S4 mirrors what Max said in Dear Billy—

—on top of the fact that we get a million subtextual references to the grief El is experiencing in the wake of the loss of Hopper (not Mike), down to how she's rebuilding her hop's cabin "he's my hero" project when she fights with Mike in episode 3.
I just…idk. Byler seems so locked down to me now I’m expanding outward to El, and the more I look at her the more clear it is that the reason El lost in the end is because she was mentally / emotionally vulnerable...which is what Vecna preyed upon to defeat her.

Bitches be like, “We’re friends. We’re friends.” And then, five seconds later, it’s [tender, emotional music] and heart eyes galore.

v2 theory
Saw a post saying that when Will gets tranced, El might use her powers to go into his mind, and she'll see what pain he's going through- which is already sad as it is BUT- what if, when El sees all the memories, she sees the arguments Will has had with Mike, the castle byers scene, the "not possible" scene, the movie theatre scene, and all their conversations after Mikes apology in s4v1- she realizes she doesn't really love Mike the way Will does.
This would be PERFECT for her character arc. Her finally learns the difference between platonic and romantic love, that she doesn't need nor want a romantic relationship with Mike, because she obviously cares for Mike a lot enough for them to have a platonic relationship.
I don't know if that makes sense- but I just think it's a really cool idea/theory. :)
