top 5 manga ♡
!!! let’s go!! a forewarning though— I’m a shoujo/romance girlie through and through
1. fruits basket of course ! 🥹🥹
2. A Sign of Affection 😫🩷
3. Blue Spring Ride
4. InuYasha
5. Kamisama Kiss
I’d say that these are the series I’m constantly rereading and have several volumes of in my collection (I’m still building it but fruits basket and inuyasha volumes are really hard to find where I am tbh so I’ve mostly read online what I don’t physically own yet) but also honourable mention to Sailor Moon, Yona of the Dawn, Black Bird by Kanoko Sakurakoji, Peach Girl, Futari de Koi wo Suru Riyuu (does this manga have an English title?? I don’t even know but it’s cute af), and lastly In the Clear Moonlit Dusk by Yamamori Mika amongst many others
#also tbh despite my interests when it comes to novels and the like I tend to gravitate towards more YA style manga I guess#I enjoy my smutty fantasy novels bur I like my manga wholesome ish I guess ??#but**#ask

Backstage Prince
2 volumes.
Licensed by Viz Media.
Drawn into the exciting world of kabuki theatre, young Akari spends her time after school assisting the internationally famous actor, Shonosuke Ichimura. In the real world, however, this prince of kabuki is actually a high school cutie by the name of Ryusei. Akari is totally clueless about kabuki--and boys--but she's eager to learn about both. Her first encounter with Ryusei doesn't go very well, but with the help of a cat named Mr. Ken, the two teenagers quickly become prince AND princesses of kabuki. Love was never so dramatic!

Black Bird (2007-2013) - :|
Consumption as an analogy for steamy bedroom times isn’t new, but I have to say that this manga really pushed it to the limit. Typically this trope is used as a counterpoint to monsters like vampires or werewolves where innocent young girls are essentially either forced or tricked into giving up their flesh to feed the beast. The concept is sexy for a reason, (or rather can be presented as sexy or horrifying or both) but everything needs a bit of moderation. Beyond the fact that the main character in this could literally be consumed to then give a demon immortality and great strength, her blood is some sort of super delicious magical cure for all sorts of demon diseases and injuries. I know this because they mention it constantly over the course of more than a dozen volumes. Or they talk about her being fruit on pages literally displaying pictures of fruit. I get it.
Misao Harada is a predictably happy go lucky sixteen year old girl who has always been pestered by spirits until her actual sixteenth birthday when she “ripens” to be some weird demon fruit that leaves her with the fate of either being eaten or married (or both?) by some demon. Kyou Usui is a crow demon who she grew up playing with and who decided when they were kids that Misao was going to be his bride come hell or high water, and practically threw his whole clan into chaos to make sure he was positioned to marry her when she turned sixteen. It’s the kind of relationship that makes you tilt your head to the side when you try to decide if it’s too unhealthy to be sweet, or if Kyou’s steadfastness in not eating her or letting other people eat her counts as gallantry.
Something that rang true but also bothered me is how Misao blames herself for just about every bad thing that befalls the people around her, usually related to the fact that she is a delicious demon battery. I’ve met that girl. I’ve felt bad for that girl. Her internalization of all the bad things that were not her fault, as well as lots of scenes which are supposed to be sexy but somehow also feature her crying left me with a lot of confusion about what exactly the message was regarding her relationship. Obviously without Kyou she would have been killed and eaten, but was this entire series one exercise in Stockholm syndrome? They seem to be loving and playful, but there’s this sinister lack of choice about the premise as well.
