An innovative research in grown plant root textiles and material by artist Diana Scherer
Visual artist Diana Scherer (1971, DE) is one of the pioneers in bio tech art. Scherer lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where she studied fine art at the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. Her work comprises botany, installations, textile and biotechnology. Scherer explores the relationship of people versus their natural environment. Through her installations she examines the boundaries between plant culture and nature. At the core of her botanical installations and textiles lies a great curiosity about what neurobiologists call ‘the brain of plants’. Scherer studies plants and root systems and applies the intelligence of plants in her work.
This book summarized the project Interwoven and its results over the past eight years. The book with a conceptual design addresses biotechnology and research, in addition to the final results and artworks.
The invited authors highlight  the various sides of the project from their fields of expertise. The design of the publication is made by Mainstudio (Edwin van Gelder, Moritz Eggmann), with texts by Giovanni Aloi, Colin Huizing, Judith Elisabeth Weiss & Hertbert Kopp-Oberstebrink, Philip Fimmano, Jiwei Zhou, and Norbert Peeters.

American Girl Christmas Movies
I've been thinking about Christmas movies, and which ones each of my dolls would like (this assumes each of them has her canon personality, but the historical dolls obviously having an anachronistic knowledge of television). So here's what I think each of their favourite Christmas movies would be:
Samantha Parkington: Mrs. Santa Claus (1996)
youtube
Starring Angela Lansbury as the titular character, this lesser-known TV movie tells the story of Santa's wife tiring of being ignored and venturing out into the world, and winding up stranded in 1910 New York City the week before Christmas.
This movie would really speak to Sam for multiple reasons. For one, of course, it's set right near her time period, and I also think she'd relate strongly to the feminist themes. One of the major storylines involves a factory whose child workers strike for better working conditions, and another involves the suffragette movement, both of which are issues that feature heavily in Samantha's stories. Also, one of the main characters is a young Irish immigrant who reminds me a lot of Nellie.
I think she'd also really like A Christmas Carol (1951), which is arguably the most faithful retelling of the Dickens story (I've decided one of her favourite books is Christmas Carol, because it fits with her personal values very well... aaand maybe because it's my favourite book, haha).
Makena Williams: Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey (2020)
youtube
Set in a fantastical world where science is magic, robots are powered by Belief, and the Square Root of Possible can be expressed in a mathematical formula, Netflix's Jingle Jangle is about brilliant toy inventor Jeronicus Jangle (Forest Whitaker), who falls into despair after his trusted assistant Gustafson (Keegan-Michael Key) steals all his blueprints and uses them for his own ends. Years later, Jeronicus' granddaughter Journey (the stellar young Madalen Mills) tries to restore his faith with her cleverness and optimism.
I think one of main reasons this movie would appeal to Makena is that it's all about celebrating Black excellence and Black joy; there's a lot of representation in the cast, without focusing on racism and suffering. She'd also really love the costumes, which are a gorgeous mix of traditional African colours/patterns and Victorian-era styles; all the thought, detail, and talent that went into the costuming would inspire her fashionista heart.
Evette Peeters: The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus (1985)
youtube
This stop-motion TV special, based on the book by L. Frank Baum (the author of The Wizard of Oz), was created by Rankin/Bass, the same team that made the famous Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman specials we all grew up watching. It's a unique take on the legend of Santa Claus where an abandoned baby is found by a kindly Wood Nymph and raised among the fairies. As Claus grows up, he moves to the human world and, dismayed by the suffering he sees there, he begins making toys for nearby children, hoping to bring light and joy to them, and ends up at odds with the Awgwas, evil creatures that influence children to do bad things.
I only just got Evette, and she's not even out with the rest of my girls right now, since I'm saving that as a Christmas surprise for Makena, but I feel this one pretty strongly. For one, I think the cottagecore/forest visual themes would really appeal to her. Also, I headcanon Evette as pagan, and one of my pagan friends once told me they loved this movie because it was the only Christmas movie that dealt with the world of the Fae in a way that aligned with their beliefs.
The only one I'm not sure of is Josefina. Someone suggested Christmas on Mistletoe Farm (2022) for her; we watched it together, and she enjoyed it, but I’m not sure it’s her favourite. Any other suggestions?

Netflix's Vikings: Valhalla cast includes actors and actresses who should be familiar to many TV viewers. The historical drama series takes place 100 years after the events of the popular History Channel show Vikings and chronicles the lives of several real-life Scandinavian warriors. Vikings: Valhalla doesn't have an official release date but will premiere sometime in 2021.
Vikings: Valhalla focuses on the end of the Viking era as Christianity takes over Scandinavia. When a religious Viking named Torsen survives a massacre led by King Æthelred the Unready, he forms a romance with a deeply anti-Christian woman named Freydís Eiríksdóttir. Vikings: Valhalla sets up a war between religious progressives and Scandinavians who cling to the past.

The Vikings: Valhalla main cast includes an ensemble lineup. Some performers already have loyal followings due to prominent roles in mainstream television, while others are mostly known for work in their native homelands. Just as Vikings helped launch the careers of so many actors and actresses, the Netflix follow-up will similarly do the same.
Tumblr media
Sam Corlett stars as Leif Eriksson, a famous Icelander who arrived in North America several hundred years before Christopher Columbus. In Vikings: Valhalla, he's framed as an outsider character who values family and old pagan beliefs. Netflix has teased that Leif will introduce audiences to a Viking world "in the throes of violent change." Corlett portrays Caliban in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. He also appeared as Young Luke in the 2020 film The Dry.
Tumblr media
Frida Gustavsson co-headlines as Freydis Eriksdotter, Leif's pagan sister who values the ways of the Old Gods. After experiencing various tragedies, Frida forms a romance with a religious man and leads an uprising against Christians. Actress Katia Winter portrayed Freydis Eriksdotter in DC's Legends of Tomorrow. Gustavsson also starred as Vuxna Thea in the TV series Dröm and may be familiar to Netflix viewers as Ma from The Witcher season 1. She recently appeared as Clara in the 2020 series Partisan.
Tumblr media
Leo Suter appears as Harald Sigurdsson, a nobleman who is one of the last Viking berserkers. Due to his charming ways, he's able to bridge the gap between Vikings and Christians, or at least that's his intent. Suter portrayed Young Stringer in Sanditon and Captain Bill Lauder in The Liberator. He also appeared as Drummond in Victoria and Daniel Beecham in Beecham House.

Bradley Freegard co-stars as King Canute, the King of Denmark. He's a legendary Viking leader who was crowned in 1017. Freegard appeared as Mei Huws in the series Gwaith/Cartref and starred as Evan Howells in Keeping Faith.
Tumblr media
Jóhannes Jóhannesson portrays Olaf Haroldson, Harald’s half-brother. He's a Christian who believes in the Old Testament and is quite large in stature. In real life, Olaf became the King of Norway. Jóhannesson is best known for portraying Lem Lemoncloak in Game of Thrones and Cumber the Ice King in Cursed. He also appeared as Bors in The Letter for the King.
Tumblr media
Laura Berlin co-stars as Emma Of Normandy, an ambitious woman from the Norman court with Viking heritage. She's a savvy businesswoman with interest in politics, and also one of the wealthiest females in Europe. Berlin portrayed Julia Weigert in Einstein and Charlotte Lindemann in Breaking Even. She also appeared as Charlotte Montrose in the movies Ruby Red and Sapphire Blue.
Tumblr media
David Oakes appears as Earl Godwin, the chief counsellor to the King of England. Based on the man's real life story, he seems to be the Littlefinger of Vikings: Valhalla. Oakes portrayed Juan Borgia in The Borgias and Prince Ernest in Victoria. He's also known for his role as George Duke of Clarence in The White Queen.

Caroline Henderson portrays Jarl Haakon, a warrior leader who rules Kattegat. The Pagan woman mentors Freydis and keeps an open mind when discussing religion. Henderson appeared as Snow White in the 2006 film Skymaster and Gloria Cole in the 2007 feature Always Yours.

Girls Night
Prompt: It is after Peter gets back from the soul stone. You have been through hell in the mean time. Deciding to blow off some steam you and your friends have a girls night but Peter is on edge the whole night terrified something will happen to you.
Pairing: Peter Parker x reader
A/N: I wrote this before Endgame. We already could gather that Peter was coming back because of Far From Home. Enjoy!
One-shot
Tumblr media
Peter has been on edge ever since getting back from the soul stone. He is having a hard time remembering what happened, if anything did happen. Though it’s imagining what it put you through, thinking he was dead forever, that is getting to him. You don’t like talking about it but he knows from your eyes that things were bad. It wasn’t just Peter that you lost, you lost you parents as well. Aunt May took you in, she always thought of you as family and Peter is very grateful that you at least had each other.
Though tonight his senses have pushed him over the line. Peter has the ability to sense nearby threats but oddly the threat on his mind is an hour away, well now only fifteen minutes. He has been nonstop trying to call you for an hour but you haven’t been able to text or call him back.
Tonight is a girls night to kick off spring break and you’re wanting to blow off steam. School has been stressful, trying to get back into a routine at home and trying to believe Peter won’t disappear again weighs heavy on your shoulders. There is nothing you’re more scared of than losing Peter again. Tonight you want to get hammered and forget everything. The downside is that the friend’s place you are staying at is far outside of the city limits with spotty cell service.
“Could we please turn on some club music? I wanna dance!” You slur.
The music blares from the newly selected playlist, and the beat rattles through your ears. Your body sways left to right carried by the music. All your life you’ve loved to dance and you’re not bad at it either, you just have a hard time trying to find the right partner that loves it as much as you do. Peter tries his best, but it is not his forte.
“(Y/N)! Peter has called you like a million times!” Shiloh exclaims over the loud music. “Just try calling your boy back.”
Stumbling over to your phone you attempt to find the corner of the house with at least two bars. Hitting the redial button you wait for Peter to pick up. Your heart starts to race faster with each ring. What if something happened to him? Was it the paramedics or Tony trying to call? These thoughts play on a loop.
“(Y/N)!!” Peter’s worried voice animates the phone.
“Peter are you okay?” Your words slur even worse than before as you stifle back tears. You didn’t realize how much you missed him till you heard his voice.
“I’m okay. I just-,” Peter sniffles. “God I just needed to hear your voice. I’ve had a bad feeling ever since you left.”
Peter apologizes for sounding like the over protective boyfriend and admits that he is almost to the house. You sit there in silence listening to your boyfriend’s voice. Tears stream down your face but you honestly do not know if you’re sad or happy.
“Woo power still out! Shot time!” Shiloh and Sam scream pushing you another glass.
Downing it, the girls pass you one after another. In the distance you can hear Peter’s voice in your ear reminding you that you don’t have to drink them. Normally you wouldn’t want to but tonight all you can think about is trying to forget that Peter and your parents were gone. All you really want is to keep drinking and have Peter with you.
The phone call disconnects and Peter continues down the road. He can’t explain it, Peter has never felt this level of intensity to get to you. Of course being your boyfriend Peter wants to spend as much time as possible with you. Though this time it feels like his enhanced abilities are pushing it over the edge, and that’s what scares him most.
The last thing Peter wants to do is be the controlling possessive boyfriend that cannot go one night without you. You are very capable of taking care of yourself, and you have proven it time and time again. But Peter would never forgive himself if you needed him and he ignored every cell in his body wanting to get to you. Every second he gets closer he tries to rationalize that he is going to be there soon but his senses won’t let up… and for good reason too.
**
Peter arrives at the house and wastes no time letting himself in. Immediately he finds the girls in the living room attempting to dance to a Beyonce song. Eyes sifting from each moving body to the next, Peter soon realizes you are not with them. Panic rises with in him as he attempts to gain their attention.
“Frankie!” Peter shouts over the music. He does this a few times as he gets closer before they notice he is here.
Peeter! What are yooou doing here?” Sam gives a judgy brow. “It’s girls night, not boyfriend night.”
“Where’s (Y/N)?” Peter tries to ignore the last comment, he feels bad already.
The girls tell him they think you went downstairs. Downstairs in the dark, drunk?? Peter tries not to display any irritation, he knows they are just having a good time. They should be having a good time, they have worked so hard to get where they are now and have lost people along the way.
Peter finds his way towards the stairs. Calling out your name, he descends down the steps faster than he probably should. About half way down is when Peter sees you and forgets how to breathe.
Your body lays on the floor before the stairs. Face down, your head crooked to the side. Examining the area, Peter finds no blood and he feels himself slowly start to exhale. Attempting to move you, a groan escapes your lips and your eyes flutter slightly. Your eyes find his once open completely.
“I’m I’m I’m fine.” You mutter. “I-I wa na sleep.”
“No no no,” Peter lifts your lightly cold form into his arms and carries you to the bathroom. He places you down near the toilet and rummages through the drawers trying to find something to use as a cup. Finding one he fills it with water and sprinkles it down your throat. Before getting almost half the water in you your body convulses.
You try to fight it but you know it will help. Peter’s cool soothing hands tie your hair into a bun. His fingers stroke your head while his free hand rubs circles up and down your back. You throw up everything you have left in you until you are crying. Suddenly feeling so empty you just wish the alcohol would make you feel full again.
Peter however, doesn’t miss a beat. Once he is sure you are through throwing up he moves your body over to the couch in the next room. He searches the room for a blanket and covers your lower body as you attempt to tell him you’re sorry.
“I just wanted ta forget.” You rub your sleepy eyes. “Remembering hurts, and I’m scared you’ll disappear again.”
Peter says nothing and sits next to you. Wanting to get closer, you place your head on his lap and wrap your arms around his thighs. You continue to feel the same soothing movement of his fingertips in your hair. Slowly you start to drift off to a blissful sleep and you welcome the darkness as an old friend from the past months.
“I love you too, (Y/N).” Is the last thing you hear before falling asleep.

JUST ADDED A FEW COPIES! Graphic 14: Work & Run - Young Studios / Designed by Na Kim. This issue of Graphic collects together the profiles of thirty small graphic design studios, each established between 2007 and 2010. These geographically disparate studies—23 based in Switzerland, the United States, Germany, England, Belgium, and Canada; 7 from South Korea—share their work and talk about the details of running their studios. “Troupe” (2018, i.s.m. de gemeente Sint-Katelijne-Waver)

Book Challenge 2019 - I DID IT!
Hi guys, after tracking all the books I’ve read here from 2013-2016, I completely forgot this whole thing for more than 3 years! Sorry!!
No fear though: I’m back! Even though 2019 has almost ended, I’ll make sure this post correctly reflects the whole of 2019!
Since it’s already the end of October, I do feel like I have some hindsight vision into my reading pace this past year, but before I mention how it actually went, I want to explain my original expectations! So 2019 for me is the year I’m finishing my Classics Bachelor Degree in July and the year I’ll be studying abroad for one term from September to December (I’m doing two degrees, so I’ll still be doing my English degree after Classics!). So for my reading, I’d expected not to read a lot. Perhaps for my thesis some books on the subjects and of course for English my course work. So my original reading goal was 50 books!
Looking back on these expectations I must say I’ve read a great deal more than I expected! Writing my thesis did include reading a lot of books and other course work had more reading than I thought I would which boosted my challenge in the first half of the year! Of course, I’ve also read quite a lot during the holidays because what else is there to do in the holidays :D? Regarding my studying abroad experience, I’m reading more than I expected. This is partly because the course work is again much more based on reading books than articles or just parts of book. At the same time, I’m doing less studying than I used to do back home, so I have more time free to do some casual reading. On top of that - since I’m walking everywhere here - I’ve started listening to audiobooks which also adds a couple to the challenge.
So my challenge became 80 books! But I had already surpassed before November, so that’s great! I’d expressed my hopes to read 100 books this year as well, but out of fear of not making that I hadn’t changed my goals. Seeing as of now (mid-November), I’ve already read 93 books I feel confident I can read at least 7 more until a 100, so I’ve changed my goal to read 100 books
The crossed book is the one I’m currently reading, I’ve written reviews for books that have a (x) behind them; the (x) is a link to my Goodreads review!
Update: Today (December 31) I’ve read 135 books so I’ve finished my challenge!!  Let’s see where the rest of this year brings me :D!

At least 25,000 koalas are believed to have died in a horrific wildfire in South Australia that may have devastating consequences for the survival of the species.   The fire on Kangaroo Island, which was considered a koala safe-haven because its population had escaped a devastating chlamydia epidemic, was described as “virtually unstoppable” on Saturday by firefighters.   On Friday, koala rescuer Margaret Hearle told The Telegraph that another important koala population, nicknamed “the gene pool” because of its good health, had been “wiped out” in Crestwood, New South Wales. Footage filmed by an ABC cameraman in New South Wales on Sunday showed the charred corpses of hundreds of kangaroos and sheep lying by the roadside.   “Sorry to share these images near Batlow, NSW. It’s completely heartbreaking. Worst thing I’ve seen. Story must be told,” he said on Twitter.   A South Australia firefighter gives water to a dehydrated koala rescued from a wildfire in December Credit: OAKBANK BALHANNAH CFS Cooler temperatures and lighter winds brought some relief in New South Wales and Victoria on Sunday, but authorities warned and extremely hot and dry weather is expected to return within days and that fires will continue to burn for weeks.   Scott Morrison, the Australian prime minister, defended his handling of the wildfire crisis on Sunday, saying “blame doesn't help anybody at this time and over-analysis of these things is not a productive exercise". Wildlife experts estimate that half a billion mammals, birds, and reptiles have been killed in the fires in recent weeks. There are fears endangered species in sanctuaries like Kangaroo Island, which was also home to 50,000 kangaroos before the fire, have been lost forever.   Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park co-owner Sam Mitchell told local media the park was expecting to treat hundreds of starving and injured koalas in coming weeks, and is building extra enclosures in preparation.   A NPWS firefighting Landcruiser lies burnt on Tallowa Dam Rd in Kangaroo Valley, New South Wales Credit: Photo by Wolter Peeters/The Sydney Morning Herald/Fairfax Media via Getty Images/ Fairfax Media About £10,600,000 worth of bluegum and pine trees on plantations were also lost.   In New South Wales, temperatures are forecast to pass 40 degrees C again on Friday, and in Victoria three blazes remain at emergency level despite the cooler weather and subsiding winds. Four people remain missing in that state, and the air and sea evacuation from Mallacoota, a town that was cut off by the fires, is continuing.   Early on Sunday Dave Harrison, 47, died of a heart attack in New South Wales while fighting to save a friend’s rural property in Batlow.   Still from footage showing dead kangaroos and sheep after wildfires hit the Kangaroo Island, South Australia Credit: Australian Broadcasting Corporation His brother Peter said he “was just that sort of guy… He would help anyone at the drop of a hat - he would drive hours to help you”.   “They had a plan to get out, but I just think he was overcome by the heat, the smoke, the exhaustion, running around putting out spot fires everywhere,” he told Nine News.   Australia bushfires | Tell us your story At least 24 people have died during the fire crisis.   It is believed at least another 60 homes were destroyed in New South Wales overnight and that estimate is expected to rise significantly as crews conduct further assessments.   While it took weeks of pressure for the Federal Government to commit to an additional $11million (£5.8million) of funding for water bombers, Australian comedian Celeste Barber has raised $25million (£13.3million) in donations for the NSW Rural Fire Service from the public, including people from around the world, in just three days.   American singer Pink and Australian actor Nicole Kidman pledged half a million dollars each to the cause.
