Wow. Just wow! As great as it was to sit down with my old pal, renowned drummer, Sandy Gennaro, in August, today may be a game changer for me.
Sure, we talked career… Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett, Bo Didley, Johnny Winter, Pat Travers, but this time we dug deep into his personal relationships with each of them, their style of banding or bonding as it were. Fascinating. Great stories, all.
The highlights for me were talking about Sandy’s 38-year marriage and what makes it still thrive, joyfully. Lessons learned there. He said exactly what I needed to hear. Likewise, when discussing what prompted his latest career shift, much like the seemingly simple random act of kindness that prompted his life-changing gig with Cyndi, a more recent momentary act of thoughtful, attentive, generosity, led to a whole new beginning as a speaker and author, which is exploding with rewards. I paid Sandy’s example forward, immediately following the Live, whilst speaking at a meeting of entrepreneurs. Not seeking any return or reward, one came totally out of left field. It works when I work it.
Once again this time with Sandy was thoughtful, insightful, inspiring, motivating, and crazy fun.
Seeking a little push in the right direction? Check him out here, and read Sandy’s Beat The Odds in Business & Life. You can get a signed copy with a pair of sticks, at https://sandygennaro.com/beat-the-odds-products/ - Not surprisingly, Sandy gives good signage!
Adored every second of this.

SATURDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO: Davy Jones & Micky Dolenz Live @ Disney Epcot May 7, 2011 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLydK9B_EmA Starting in 1995, Davy Jones and band appeared annually at Disney Epcot, routinely booked for 3-5 days, 3 sets a day, with dates usually set around Mother’s Day (though I recall some as early as March). People from around the world attended, with some scheduling their vacations around it. Davy brought me in on keyboards for the 1997 series (I remember Sandy Gennaro winging broken drum sticks at me) then every year from 2005 to 2011. We had great food, fun, laughs, and good times, and the Disney staff treated us like royalty. For me it was an opportunity to catch up with Floridian family and friends. Sometimes guests such as Flo & Eddie would drop in, and on this occasion, Micky Dolenz literally rolled on to the stage. Hard to believe that 13 years has flown by since we were up on that hot stage by the lake—and it was the last time we did it. Immediately after wrapping up the Epcot shows, everyone got on a plane for England to begin the 2011 Monkees reunion tour… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLydK9B_EmA

Today, Part 2, Live with renowned drummer Sandy Gennaro, who's also a treasured old friend. Sandy played with Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, The Monkees, Bo Diddley, Johnny Winter, Montrose, The Pat Travers Band,
Mark Farner, Benny Mardones, and Robin Gibb, to name some and graced just about every stage I booked back in the day. We haven't seen each other in almost 30 years, maybe since my wedding! This is gonna be FUN!
Sandy uses the lessons he’s learned surviving the Music Business helping businesses and student bodies create a thriving culture as a launch pad for heightened success in business, relationships, and life. A senior faculty member of The Collective NYC for 27 years, Sandy enables musicians to perfect their craft and educates them on the Business of Music, the curriculum of which he created. His new book, Beat The Odds in Business & Life, recently dropped, is a blueprint for success. *reads frantically* Between old pals Lib and Sandy, I think I have to start, Drummers Who Write.
You can get a signed copy with a pair of sticks, at https://sandygennaro.com/beat-the-odds-products/ - Sandy gives good signage! It’s how his career kind of began. It’s all in there.
We'll be talking about more of Sandy's rock journey and the path he carved to use that experience to aid others. Plus, he's a fun sweetheart. So looking forward to part 2 of our reunion.

SUNDAY MATINEE MUSIC VIDEO “Throw the First Stone (A Psychedelic Soul Suite)” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyyvKytF_uU
 —A ramble in 3 parts:
Part I: A string quartet from Stockholm (courtesy of my friend Bil Bryant) plays over a frenzied live band in Japan, performed by bassist Jerry Renino, guitarist Wayne Avers, and drummer Sandy Gennaro (all ex-sidemen for The Monkees). Call this an act of xenochrony, a recording studio technique where parts are lifted from their original context and placed into a different work. Composer Charles Ives invented this approach after he noticed parade bands blending with one another by “chance,” so he harnessed it by design.
Part II: A Talking Heads-influenced update on a song I’d written after observing journalists, TV evangelists, politicians, and others engaged in petulant name-calling (“and the names go ‘round like a blimp that blew up in your phone”). The street level phrase “throw the first stone” originally comes from the incident recorded in St. John’s Gospel. A mob of religious men are preparing to stone an adulterous woman to death, and they confronted Jesus about it, like he should commend such a harsh punishment. Instead, Jesus calmly said, “He that is without sin among you, throw the first stone at her.” One by one the men drifted away because of the truth: All have sinned and need to self-judge before judging others.
Part III: More xenochrony, referencing J.S. Bach, “Greensleeves,” the fade of “All You Need is Love” (The Beatles), etc. while segueing to dreamy riff on resonator guitar and keyboards.
The term xenochrony comes from a Greek word meaning “strange and alien time.” Time can be chronology, or a collection of images and memories stacked together at will. Stravinsky said, “Music is but another way to measure time.” Current events may seem strange and alien, but we have an opportunity to make the best of the time. Now. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GyyvKytF_uU

I feel like I went “home.” Sitting down with Sandy Gennaro after a 30-year abyss was a walk down the wild side of memory lane and just crazy fun. Having a bunch of our old cohorts from back in the day along for the ride made it that much funner.
Sandy took us from Staten Island, getting ignited by The Beatles, local giggin’ and day jobs to LA, meeting an idol, erring’ at a major audition, helping said idol get that gig, Michael Boloton - not a misspelling, before he was Bolton, Pat Travers, playing arenas, to playing with an unknown Cyndi Lauper, who exploded on their first tour, getting that gig thanks to Sandy’s kindness to a stranger. A recurring theme in his story. Great stories along the way, opening for Queen for months at the height of it all, The Monkees, Davy, and Micky, solo as well, Joan Jett… we got stopped there, the time flew and Sandy had another show to do.
We talked family, his marriage which has thrived for 30+ years, his daughter living her dream, she’s had a great teacher, and Sandy’s been a masterful manifester. His recently dropped, Beat the Odds in Business & Life, which is filled with more great stories, how he did and does what he does, and how we can, too. You can get a signed copy with a pair of sticks, at https://sandygennaro.com/beat-the-odds-products/ - Sandy gives good signage! It’s how his career kind of began. It’s all in there.
There was much laughter, smiles from face end to face end, warm remembrances, an all-around great time. There’s so much more to talk about - we’ll be back. Part Two is promised. Part 1s don’t get better.
Here’s the discussed video of Sandy on Carson playing Stump The Band https://bit.ly/3q0L0Ey - killer!

FRIDAY FLASHBACK to 1999: https://johnnyjblairsingeratlarge.bandcamp.com/track/my-love-she-means-everything ...Between 1993 and 2003, Davy Jones (Monkees) and I worked on 40 of his original songs. Some were tunes he started in 1968, designated for The Monkees but not used. Other songs were brand new. Most of the work was recorded and issued on 3 albums, the best known being JUSTME and JUSTME2 (refracting on JUSTUS, the 1997 Monkees reunion). David and I had a give-and-take communication on the arrangements—sometimes he’d let me run wild with tempos and instrumentation, other times he had the song mapped out and I just topped it off. For “My Love,” we were inspired by Hurricane Smith and Electric Light Orchestra. “My Love” was recorded in 1999 with David “Loafy” Alexander, Aviva Maloney, and (the late well-remembered) Jerry Renino.
When you click on this link, go to the main page to find more rare Davy Jones + subscriber-only features: A compilation from his concerts w/symphony orchestras (including the complete 20-minute PBS-TV set from 2010), a long radio interview, and more. Enjoy!
