When I was hiking through rugged terrain, I imagined a video game where I gain energy the more rocks and hills I run along. I can only spend so much energy at a time depending on the level. Moves include "Elastic Rebound", "Aftershock", and heat.

Weakness would be ice and water. There is a level where you need to conserve enough energy before entering an ice cap zone.

Moodboard Monday: Seismic

A gunslinger (asshole), a CEO (asshole) and a lawyer (asshole, but classy) walk into a bar? Here's hoping the owner's insurance can cover it.

For this week's MS: Moodboard Monday by @moon-and-seraph, I put together a little something for the three main characters of chapter 4 of my WIP Seismic. And even though the evening described in the chapter wasn't quite like the outing described above, these three are definitely going out for drinks together in the near future.

Nisha grins at her across the doorstep. Meg takes a step forward and kisses her square on the mouth. After the initial shock, it’s not even that bad of a kiss. A little too much teeth, but she expected that much. The purple lipstick tastes like plum with a touch of jet fuel. She steps back and gives Nisha her sweetest smile. “Hope that was okay, Nish. Just wanted to give you a proper thank-you for showing Jack a good time, you know?” It only lasts three seconds, five tops. But it is official and confirmed: she has just rendered Sheriff Nisha Kadam, however briefly, speechless. “Hey, do that again,” Jack calls from behind her. “I didn’t get my ECHO out in time.” “You snooze, you lose, cowboy.” Nisha laughs at him over Meg’s shoulder. “So… Meg, right? Like I said, I don’t often go riding this side of the tracks, but tell you what, once you get bored of Mr. Hyperion back there, why don’t you swing by Lynchwood? May well be a bottle of whiskey with your name on it.” “Thanks, Sheriff.” Meg shoots her a wink. “I’ll keep that in mind.”

And the truth is, when it comes to bullshit mind games, Nisha has done a good job setting up the pieces just now.

She’s drawn Meg’s attention to the lipstick and the implied kiss enough times to make its meaning clear: a challenge. So if Meg continues to ignore it and makes no attempt to—ugh, stake her claim? mark her territory? some other wording for equally stereotypical nonsense? In the eyes of someone who likes issuing such challenges, she’ll be a pushover forever.

But if she pushes back and engages at the very level she’s being baited into… why, wasn’t she just told not to worry about it? How silly of her to make a big deal out of a tiny little slip-up between friends with a past.

Let it slide, and she’s a pushover. Push back, and she’s jealous and paranoid.

No. She’s not doing either of that. Because another thing about Megan Clarke is that on the rare occasion she does allow herself to get drawn into a bullshit mind game, she will do whatever it takes to be the last woman standing.
