If you ever wondered what the best living vertebrate is, it’s the alligator gar in my totally not biased 100% scientifically backed opinion. They are just a flawless creature. Nothing wrong with them. Good tooth to snoot ratio, they have a winning smile.

They and other monster fish absolutely should NOT be in the hands of most private keepers at all and I do NOT support morph breeding of them because of that, but pretty fishy cute :c

#they are my favorite animal c:#I recently settled on them after a lifetime of not knowing the answer#color mutation#selective breeding#alligator gar#atractosteus spatula#dead animal#hunting#I was ranting at an oddities expo about how much I love gar the guy asked me if I was from Texas#no I just really like them#wonderful armored scales and skulls too#melanistic#leucistic

Last post for today isn't Mice but rather a book recommendation.
I picked this one up today locally and even though the focus is on large livestock the principles are applicable to any breeding program no matter how small or what species you are working with.
The books gose far beyond punnet squars and Mendel genetics covering topics such as environmental influences explaining complex terminology in a way the layman can easily understand it.
As well as giving guidance for long term breeding goals.
Highly worth picking up.

Is there any hope that we might be able to reverse the harmful genetics modification on farm animals and reintroduced them to the wild again
Most of the species we exploit were never wild in the first place; they were bred from wild animals a long time ago but they’re now a wholly separate species that does not have any real place in wild ecosystems. We could breed out negative traits and bring a chicken closer to a red jungle fowl, for example, but the resulting animal would not be a red jungle fowl.
These animals could conceivably occupy an ecological niche left vacant by an extinct or dwindling species, but that is more ecosystem engineering than returning an animal to the wild who used to be there. It may be desirable to breed out the traits theat cause health issues and let animals like cows and chickens exist in sanctuaries in vastly reduced numbers, as a sort of conservation project, but that’s about as much as we could realistically hope for.

Why are English Pouter pigeons Like That? I know scientifically its because they got screwed over by humans selective breeding like Pugs but why? The poor things look like if Sid from Toy Story took a pigeon, strapped barbie legs onto it, and then made it swallow a balloon. How is this beneficial in any way?

Modern day vegetables lack 90% of the nutritional value of their ancestors, deliberately bred that way because the taste of vitamins and vegetable proteins was unpalatable to the caucasian palate.

In the devoted to flowers chapter of À rebours des Esseintes derides roses as “stupid and pretentious flowers […] which belongs in the porcelain flowerpots painted by young girls”. We see that a lot of his tastes comes from boredom with what’s common, popular, so much so that later he mentions growing to despise works of literature and music once they become widely known. Rose, a staple of floristics, the quintessential flower must therefore seem the most dull and unoriginal choice possible. However, I see roses as very much in line with other principle of his sense of aesthetic- their unnaturally grotesque appearance created by selective breeding.
Limited, stubborn and formless though she be, nature has at last been subjected and her master has succeeded in changing, through chemical reaction, the earth's substances, in using combinations which had been long matured, cross- fertilization processes long prepared, in making use of slips and graftings, and man now forces differently colored flowers in the same species, invests new tones for her, modifies to his will the long-standing form of her plants, polishes the rough clods, puts an end to the period of botch work, places his stamp on them, imposes on them the mark of his own unique art.
"It cannot be gainsaid," he thought, resuming his reflections, "that man in several years is able to effect a selection which slothful nature can produce only after centuries. Decidedly the horticulturists are the real artists nowadays."
Roses that we see in flower shops today appear so unlike wild roses. The absurd abundance of petals renders the very purpose of a flower undone. What insect is willing to burrow through the dense maze of colourful petals to reach the doubtful promise of nectar and pollinate the rose? Flower- an organ of reproduction shaped to attract intermediaries was shaped by gardeners to maximise its aesthetic value while rendering it sterile. That is the kind of grotesque, unnatural and decadent that speaks to me. I cannot think of roses as anything but grotesque, I love them that way.

Honestly. Most men are so ugly. Like it's the disturbing ugly. This is why we need to get back to selective breeding and do the same thing as Sweden!

In case anyone was wondering about my wonderful worm, here is 7 month old vs the now approximately 2 year old Poptart the palmetto corn snake ! Her colors have developed so intensely, she no longer is a tiny pink worm, and contrary to what I was told about the morph she did definitely gain spots, and spots that she initially had have grown in size as well!
#color mutation#selective breeding#corn snake#pantherophis guttatus#reptile#snake#she looked like raw chicken as a grub#the downside to palmettos is if they get mites you get a heart attack every time you look at them#she got mites once and I was constantly on edge because is that a bug or a spot???#just like with banana ball pythons

Human Cattle
It was another day on my farm, I enjoyed the money I made but I mostly enjoyed the work I did. My farm was quite good at helping people and giving people a purpose, making them useful and productive members of the human race. I entered the barn and looked around at the criminals that were in their little stockades, bent over and being bred for the glory of our great society while others got milked. I went to take a look at my prized cattle, she was a beauty that only I was allowed to touch and anyone that touched her was made into meat. Every farm owner had their own prized cattle and the government deemed it that tainting our prize was a crime. I caressed her cheek and kissed her sweetly, I'd be back for her soon enough. I headed deeper into the barn, into the backroom where the slaughter house was. One of my ex-workers was being prepared to be sent off as meat for touching my girl, and their first cut was brought to me for testing. When I took a bite of their good flesh, I gave the approval to chop them up fully to be shipped off as food. Someone will be eating well in the near future, and I'll continue to enjoy this farm. I returned to the front and my prized cattle, carefully removing her from the stocks and back to my home. While we had to select our breeders for the other cattle, she could have only my purity within her. I loved her in private and I enjoyed her body, she was my prize.

Throughout the domestication process of wheat, the plant phenotype has undergone changes, such as the weakening of the rachis, the increase in seed size, and the reduction or disappearance of the awns.
Today Wheat is the world's most important crop in terms of food security, but EU data warn that the impact of climate change could significantly increase its price and modify its production process in certain areas of the world.
Archeological and historical records show that wheat spikes were predominantly awned across many millennia after domestication, while small awns or awnless spikes were common during the last millennium.

New forms of agricultural and pastoral subsistence emerged in the Holocene, accompanied by the familiar suite of major animal domesticates. Sheep and goats led the way, with cows and pigs close behind.

Once tamed, domesticated animal populations were shaped via selection by farmers and herders for other desired traits, such as body size. It was a fateful quirk of global biogeography that the Old World was more abundantly supplied with animals that were potentially tamed and economically valued.
