The Lioness Lies Down

The lioness lies down at long last

Having wandered seas of swaying grass

For years spurred on by hungry instinct

She takes down the gazelle of experience

For her own sustenance and for her pride’s

The satisfaction of progeny opening their eyes

And the insecurity of their uncertain fate

Her claws unsheath in furious abandon

To shield the youngest cubs from every

Feint in the shadows of dwindling sunlight

The scent of predator and kin is so intertwined

All recoil having received her barbed lash

The cataracts of aging clearly having

Clouded her perspective with mercurial swiftness

The lioness lies down at long last

Her roars lonely having wilted to whimpers

Until the air is polluted with deafening silence

Her funeral bearers return most solemnly

Struggle though they may with her memory

There is gratitude at her gift of life

And admiration for her granite sense of self

when i first started listening to julien baker in 2023, shadowboxing was in my top three. in 2025, it's back in my top three. fire song. easily one of the best on turn out the lights

"how do you know the dye will orient that way in the membrane" I don't yet I have to do polarization microscopy but there is precedent in the literature for similarly structured dyes
