Snowdown: Father Winter 2/3

The drive home is a quiet one. Vi snoozes in the passenger seat, feet up on the dashboard (Caitlyn has long given up trying to dislodge her partner’s stance in the years they’ve been together, and so has simply made sure there is a thick antimacassar in place to catch the mud and snow) while Caitlyn peers through the windshield at the slowly-descending flakes of snow. Another snowy day in a PIltovian winter. Everything coated in white. Pristine. Still. Silent.

She pulls over near Baker’s Hill, fetching the bag of autumn apples from the trunk. Leaving Vi to snooze in the warmth, the sheriff goes and begins to hang the apples from the branches of the trees and leaving some rolled under the shrubs.  From her pockets, she brings out stale bread and digestives, tossing and crumbling them just under shelter.

Deer and birds are already emerging to take advantage of this bounty, even before Caitlyn has time to return to her automobile. She smiles, and watches them eat, then continues on her way. 

It will be her birthday this week. She should prepare.
