Six people gather for their weekly grief session, but when their counselor is a no-show, things go a little off-the rails. I'm a big fan of stories of grief and mourning. The visceral ache of it is a feeling I love to experience secondhand. While I didn't get much of that here, I still really enjoyed the concept and the characters, all of whom are distinct and familiar. It's not a particularly revolutionary show in terms of what it does and says (and while I got a good snicker about the flagrant Sondheim "No One is Alone" references, it was a little too precious). Some of the acting came off uneven at times, with line deliveries falling flat, which isn't unusual during summer theatre. It's off-season. Most established companies are dark. Experienced stage actors either pick up a few TV guest spots or travel for summer stock. I don't want to say that there's no high-quality actors in new shows left in NYC this time of year, but like... And the direction too wasn't quite strong enough, though I chalk that up to a young director still finding their footing. The ending was, apparently, changed late in previews, and while I don't know what it was before, I do know that this wasn't the answer.

In all, I liked it. I enjoyed myself. I'm glad I saw it, and I'm glad I was able to get a comp ticket. I'd like to see this show go through another round of workshopping, have a more experienced director and cast, and capitalize the title.

A Note on Ratings

Unrelated, but one of the actresses looked strikingly like a younger Judy Kuhn stretched vertically.

Having just rewatched AAA, it's really interesting how much of a walking raw nerve Agatha is after episode 5.

She aggressively pushes everyone away with her words, verbally attacking every vulnerability she spots.

She went from this

To a hissing, spitting kitten, who claws at everything and anyone who gets close.

Seeing her abusive mother reverts her back to the witch on the run, her against the world.

Having Billy accuse her of lying, of being the villain she is, of stone cold murdering Alice intentionally, sets her off in the worst way.

It's that same old story, getting told you are evil, worthless, a born monster, often enough, and you start falling into the pattern of behaviour you are accused of.

Why would they call me a monster, a liar, unless it was true.

Which is ironic because Agatha has probably been her most honest and least monstrous in her interactions with Billy.

She tells him the witches road isn't real, she tells him she didn't intentionally kill Alice, she tells him he has nothing to be ashamed of for surviving. Yet he calls her a liar throws each truth back in her face, twisted into a lie, until she just gives up.

Look at her, all defensive, showing Billy the monster he expects to see. Back in that survival mode to protect herself.

I imagine if she hadn't had her mother thrown at her for her trial, the outcome of this story would be very different.

She wouldn't have had her confrontation with Rio, wouldn't have pushed and pushed until Rio gave her the ultimatum.

The irony is that Agatha treated Rio the same way Evanora treated her. She lashes out, heaping all her loss, her guilt, her grief onto Rio making it her fault, her responsibility. The same way Evanora places all her own self-loathing onto Agatha.

If she had time to process things, hadn'thad her own deamons come back to haunt her, there could have been compromise, and the thinnest sliver of a chance at a reunion between her and Rio.

Agatha is a creature forged in neglect, in rejection, in the scorn of her community. She is a scrappy little survivor, the monster everyone believes her to be, a scared little girl uncertain as to why her mother hates her so.

It's what makes her such a rich character because, given the right circumstances, she could be so much more.

we need more preening content in the trigun fandom. vash got all those feathers and yet i haven't seen that much fanart or fanfic of what if he needed help preening them. the intimacy of something like that, especially combined with how vashs wings are something which he views as terrifying and monstrous, and yet needing someone to gently and carefully comb thru those feathers for potentially hours to clean them just. aughh it drives me insane

not to mention that if it's wolfwood whose doing it that adds even more angst and intimacy. the way he sees himself as unfit to hold the children at the orphanage, and how his hands are only good for violence. the idea of vash, who is angelic, asking him to use his bloodstained hands and to be gentle and to not only touch his wings but groom them just. auagajai...

Anthony doesn't get enough flack from this fandom if I'm being honest, like most of it is pushed onto other female characters while he gets the "he was struggling," excuse. And while he was struggling, there's definitely validity to that, he also should not have his actions (eg. playing with Kate's feelings, putting her and Edwina in a difficult situation, etc) excused because of that.

That was an absolutely fascinating read and I'm almost crying imagining being stuck inside of my apartment this vividly and then seeing those hero students turn a would-be massacre around. Or watching the broadcast and posting online cause DO YOU SEE THIS TOO??? Would you consider posting this particular darling as a one shot on ao3? Or the opinion piece? It wouldn't interrupt the story that way but remain accessible.

If I had the time, I’d love to make it its own one shot. Maybe I’ll manage one day. I’d really like to. I have this entire one shot around Mirio getting his license that I’d also like to do if I had time.

I think the part about this backstory that makes it so compelling to me is more the world’s reaction than the fight itself. I just have always been really intrigued by those moments where the world entire world stops to focus on the exact same moment—particularly when they have happy endings, like the Tham Luang cave rescue. I feel like so often this world is prone to apathy. Tragedies happen and no one cares, but sometimes we do. Sometimes everyone cares. Sometimes the entire world gets together and wants to save someone.

They all risked their lives and their licenses because they just loved the people of Yokohama that much. They didn’t have to know them. They needed heroes, so they were going to get them.

But they were all terrified the entire time it was happening. And they all thought they were doing this alone.

And I think there’s a special kind of magic in the idea that they weren’t alone. The entire world held its breath and rooted them on. They loved and were loved in turn.

AfO’s escape and potential return to power was a footnote comparatively. Fuck that guy. Look at what their kids did. Aren’t they spectacular.

Read the B&N bonus epilogue for Spectacular and it was amazing and I just want to say I really really hope we get to see them go to the North because that would be peak drama and absolutely hilarious. Stephanie loves to tease us
