Song: Aqua Regia

I can’t believe the chokehold this song has on me. It came out this past January but I hadn’t really listened to the song as a whole until I heard a clip of the bridge on tiktok. There was someone talking about the story of the song and I had a little “wow… I do that,” moment over it. The bridge is honestly my favorite part of the songs. The contrast of the instrumentals (or lack thereof) compared to the rest of the song, the lyrics and what they describe, and how Vessel’s voice sounds so isolated and yet brimming with emotion. 

One small fact that not everyone may know is that “Aqua Regia” is latin for “Royal Water” and is not just fancy water. Aqua Regia is an extremely acidic and corrosive material made of three parts concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) and one part concentrated nitric acid (HNO3).It was named “Royal Water” because of its ability to dissolve gold.

The bridge’s lyrics have been interpreted in different ways, but I understand them as how even after the toxic behaviors around you have ended, the physical and emotional reactions to situations similar to what caused the trauma are ingrained in the body. For most people when loud continuous noises finally end, there is a residual ringing left in the ear that can last for seconds, hours, days, or maybe even weeks. The fighting off change line could be how the subject of the song has been fighting for their own being for so long that even though the situation is resolved, there’s still a gut-punch reaction to begin fighting again as soon as the smallest threat arises.

Now everyone will interpret this song differently, but nonetheless this is a beautifully written and executed song. I love Sleep Token and cannot wait for their new album “Take Me Back to Eden” to be released May 19th of this year.
