By the time Ditzy came into the picture, Cinch was down to two charges. She refused to fail them the way she failed...

Well, with one down, there were two left and she cared so much she wouldn't let anyone ruin them, especially not themselves. Surely they would come to realize Cinch was only helping.

I think it’s fascinating that katara says “then you didn’t love her the way i did.” there’s a double meaning there. there’s “you didn’t love her as much as i did,” which is a hurtful thing to say, regardless of whether or not it’s true. but then there’s also, “we don’t love her the same way.” which is true. they clearly love their mother differently. it’s not a matter of more, it’s a matter of how. kya birthed them, literally, but her death was also a rebirth for both of them. her sacrifice shaped their respective identities.

katara loves her mother as the site of her creation myth. she wears the memory of what kya did for her around her neck, desperate to prove herself and be the hero she needs to see in the world. sokka sees that in katara, her drive to create change out of this formative injustice, but he also sees the price of it, and shapes himself into the new sacrifice necessary for katara’s hero’s journey. if katara sees kya as her legacy, as her creator who she must honor and avenge, sokka sees kya as his fate, as his inevitable future born of an inexorable past.

who can say which child loved their mother more. but how they loved her, and how they grieve her… well. their modes of mourning differ based on the roles they see fit to inhabit and the narratives created by their formative traumas. katara’s duty is to remember: kya’s absence is physical, she wears it around her neck, her mourning is an act of creation. sokka’s duty is to repress: he forgets his [mother’s] face as he neglects and sublimates his own. consider how frustrating it must be for katara that sokka refuses to speak of her defining, mythmaking event, that he copes with own fate by attempting to ignore it. so there certainly is a difference there, in how they choose to honor kya’s memory. what katara said may have been hurtful, but it wasn’t entirely wrong.

Okay so I’ve been biting my tongue but figured I might as well get it out already.

I feel like it’s important to point out that Piers was Chris’s lieutenant. He was directly under him. So yeah, he was a higher rank than the rest of the team, but not higher than Chris. And definitely not a high enough rank to have any sort of sway with the brass. If they want Chris back on the field, there’s absolutely nothing Piers can do to fight it.

But besides that;

Piers looks up to him, he cares about him. Hell, Chris scouted him, trained him. They were friends. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if he jumped at the chance to find him and bring him back.

He’s also a 26 year old soldier, I doubt he had any idea the extent of Chris’s mental issues. He’s drunk when Piers shows up after all. In fact, I doubt the BSAA cared or had the time to do a full psych work up on him before flinging him into Lanshiang.

Chris is unhinged, he’s reckless, he’s blinded by vengeance. But his actions are still his own fault. He shouldn’t be out in the field in any capacity. In fact, I feel like he shoulda been sedated and brought to a hospital. But he’s clear headed enough to know what he’s doing, he just doesn’t care about the consequences. He’s got tunnel vision. That’s not an excuse, that’s an explanation. He’s still responsible.

He tries to blame it all on Carla, but the blood of his own team in Lanshiang is also on his hands.

In fact, Piers points that out! “If you hadn’t been blinded by vengeance, we could have prevented some of those deaths.” Shit, they then get in a whole fight over it.

There’s another time I can think of off the top of my head where Piers points out he’s being reckless earlier on in the game. Chris shuts it down with the whole soldier thing.

So, if Piers knows something is wrong, why does he keep following him?

1; that’s his friend, 2; that’s his captain, and 3; if Chris goes out there on his own in the state that he’s in he will get himself killed.

I’m tired of this idea that Piers is some sort of powerful asshole that forces Chris into bad situations and is therefore responsible for all of Chris’s actions. It’s so dumb.

Piers isn’t some stupid manipulative person. From what we see he’s genuine, loyal, and even caring. He cared about continuing to fight the good fight, to help end bioterrorism. And he cared about Chris. He sacrificed himself for both. For the future.

I can understand loving a character a lot, but you can still recognize their faults. I love Chris, I do, but he did stupid shit and that’s on him. And that’s okay! Because fave characters aren’t always pure and innocent. and that’s fine! 

If you don’t like piers, then don’t like him. but don’t mischaracterize him to make others look good.

don’t make up some long-winded reason as to why and put it in the character tag for fuck’s sake. also talking about people who write him is unnecessary.

Because it’s rude to those who actually like the character. I thought that was an old tumblr rule to keep discourse out of the tags??  It feels so inflammatory. Which I’m sure it is. But it irritated me to the point where I bit the bait. fandom is supposed to be fun, if you’re gonna be negative like that keep it to yourself.

Thoughts on how they will explain a possible 3 episode Lucy absence?

The first thing that comes to mind that makes sense to me is Lucy's family.

We don't really know much about Lucy. Take it from her, her entire life is just work, gym, and Kate. She doesn’t really have anything else going on (I really thought her being a junior agent and wanting to follow in Tennant's footsteps was gonna be up there, but they seemed to randomly drop that after they futzed with the timeline to give us that Kacy backstory). The only thing we really know about her is that she has issues with her rich family and potentially burned that bridge when she left Texas. Given NCIS: Hawai`i's focus on ohana and the crumbs she was dropping last season (they were her third-most talked about thing behind work and Kacy angst lol), Lucy’s family troubles seem to be shaping up to be her other big long-term storyline. 

Among the bits of bts we've gotten from 2x07 (presumably the last episode she would be in if she were to be absent for 3 episodes) was this interesting little sneak peak:

Looks like the perfect set-up for them to get personal, like talking about Lucy’s fear of the water or quietly reflecting on her insecurities or her family/childhood (we already have a Whistler focused episode so this could be Lucy’s moment). Like something on the same level of seriousness as the scene where Lucy’s comforting and encouraging Kate outside of the FBI BBQ, but maybe with less anxiety and more chill vibes lol. It could be a great opportunity to finally introduce some substantial Lucy backstory and or a long-term background storyline that isn’t just about her and Kate.  

I know a lot of people theorize that her family has cut her out completely or vice versa, but NCIS: Hawai'i already has one parent-child relationship that started out like that with Wally and Kai so maybe they want to differentiate a little (though they could use that similarity as an opportunity to get them to bond over it whenever that storyline happens, a more in-depth version of 1x04). I could see her not reaching out, but not having their numbers blocked either or still keeping minimal contact with them, birthdays and whatnot. Maybe something happened with a niece or nephew or her parents and she needs to go back and see them. It would warrant Tennant giving her extended personal time to take care of it. Plus, it would be easy to explain why she’s not in the episode at all if she’s back on the mainland and if they wanted to, they could include her without her needing to be on location/the sets via either phone or video calls and she could record all her scenes ahead of time. Though, the cons to this would be that if Lucy was absent from the episode, that means we wouldn’t get to see any of the angsty family scenes! (unless there were flashbacks shown later) and it could turn into a lot of tell not show type story writing which I hate. It would be a neat way to introduce angst though if Lucy is keeping it all in and not telling anybody about what happened even though its clearly affecting her (or if Kate feels hurt that Lucy didn't want her to go with her/isn't telling her either). It would be an interesting bump in the road in a season where she's been building trust and communication with Kate. My dream would be for it to progress slowly, more mentions of her past here and there, her family slowly becoming more present in her life (good or bad), maybe a brother or sister shows up in an episode down the line as a suspect or to visit and that throws her off, but I want the parents showing up to be an unexpected monumental thing that doesn't happen until like at least late s3 or s4.

Each of their cases takes places over the course of a few days minimum and that’s not even accounting for the amount of time that might take place in between them. Unless they threw in a few Nightwatch type cases (which they solved in one friday night and one entire saturday) then I don’t see how you explain away that big of an absence in-story unless you introduce a big storyline like Lucy needing to go back home for some reason. 

Another possibility I’ve seen floating around is Lucy getting hurt in the upcoming episodes, which is very doable and I would not hate it at all. My only potential concern with that is I would want her to have scenes with the whole team and not just Kate while she's recovering. So maybe if she’s in the hospital, Tennant comes by to see her and tells her about the case or the boys throw her a little party in the hospital or they video call her because she’s bored out of her mind. Though, since Lucy’s in the crossover, I don’t know how keen Tennant would be bringing an agent who was recently seriously injured with her to LA on a mission like the one being described in the crossover (Noah is also listed as being in the crossover, but I don’t know if I’ve heard or seen anything at all about him filming out of state). IIRC, the synopsis mentions something about agents being targeted so Lucy being separated from everyone while in Texas could make her an easy target? Or if she hears about Tennant going to LA, it would make sense why she’s the one accompanying her because she’s already on the mainland and would probably be looking for an excuse to leave her family (or maybe she wants to leave Texas to protect them since she’s a target). 

Hell, since we're speculating let's just throw shit at the wall. Maybe they do something wild like Lucy went on a long undercover thing or oh she's suspended because she fucked up.

Of course, they could still go with, “oh Tennant just shipped Lucy off to help another division since she's the only one who doesn't have family they need to take care of in Hawai’i or Lucy needed to help a friend or something it’s nbd,” and have her come back like nothing happened. 

tldr; keeping up with the taras, she gets hurt, they just brush it off casually, or they throw something out of left field

The sun hadn't risen yet. Pulling himself from a warm bed had been an endless struggle for Shanks most of his adult life. Properly rousing himself seemed to get harder with each passing year. Despite not sleeping a wink during the night, this bed was proving to be particularly difficult.

During his time in Foosha, Shanks had taken on Makino’s schedule as his own–as well as he could, anyway. He couldn’t wrap his head around how she managed to get so much done: working late evenings at her tavern and then wake up early enough to make sure Luffy was fed. That didn't count any of her own tasks.

The thought alone exhausted him and was enough to make him want to stay where he was beneath the covers, with her at his side.

He turned to his side, and in the slivers of moonlight that peaked through the window, he could see the outline of Makino, sleeping peacefully. His finger tips brushed tenderly against her cheek pushing away the few stray hairs that had fallen onto her face in the night, and fought the urge to fall back into bed beside her and take her into his arms.

A warm bed was hard enough to escape, but there had been a certain ease to walking away when sharing a bed with whoever he'd managed to pick up at some local bar for the night.

With Makino it had become the opposite. Evenings alone in Party's Bar had turned into sleepovers and then into breakfast together, Shanks often still in the clothes he'd worn the day before. He'd made her late to start her mornings more than once when his attempts at coaxing her back into the warmth of her bed proved successful.

She had taken him into waters deeper than he could swim and he'd been at sea long enough to know when he was in over his head.

It was why he'd suggested setting sail again. He and Makino were intertwined in more ways than one, and Shanks wasn't quite done with Foosha. A couple weeks at sea would be good for both of them. Makino deserved the life he couldn't give her. His leaving again would be a reminder for the both of them, surely. Space and time apart would give him time to remind himself why he couldn't stay.

But when she'd asked him to spend the night again before he left, he'd melted right into her palm.

He was as desperate for distance as he was for her company, each coming with its own kind of fear.

Shanks sat up and swung his feet over the side of the bed and stood, collecting his shirt and cape that were thrown atop her dresser. He'd wanted an early start out, before the sun, to make their departure a little quieter.

The wooden floor creaked beneath his feet as he gathered his things, knowing that he was trying to run from her. Leaving with no goodbyes would be easier for him.

He loved her.

The thought drew him closer when all he wanted to do was walk out her door. Love was a scary thing. And for someone like him it was dangerous.

So much for no goodbyes.

Shanks knelt beside her once he approached the side she slept on and pressed a kiss to her forehead. 

Her lashes fluttered at the sensation and she stirred. Their eyes met and Shanks smiled, unsure if she was fully awake. Her hand lifted to brush at his cheek. Shanks leaned into her touch and hated himself for it.

“Hey…” he said softly. “Headin’ out.”

She mumbled something so softly he couldn't make the words out and her hand fell to tangle into his cape. Her brow furrowed just slightly and she tugged at the fabric and his heart.

He leaned closer, pressing his lips against her, and it seemed to wake her enough to pull him in closer to return the kiss. They parted and she whispered “Safe travels,” against his lips before letting herself fall back into her pillows, a smile curving at her lips.

“I'll be back for you soon enough,” he said with a smile of his own, meaning every word without wanting to. He stood, taking his straw hat from the corner of the bed, and headed towards the door. The lights around the small port were out. Shanks spared a glance back towards the window where Makino slept, missing her already, and walked on.
