Sitting here realizing I really miss my sourcemates even if I'm not as attached to my source self as some of our other alteds are. Like. I want my friends and family :(

To be honest this bother me more as an a historian than spiritually. But I think it is very important especially to not take things sami culture and spray a thin layer of viking on it. The Scandinavians have commit atrocities for hundreds of years to the sami people and to take their culture and then make it into the beliefs of the scandics is very insulting. (also there is no reason sourcewise to believe old norse people ever looked with the vibe op refers to)

I think my least-favorite issue in Heathenry that doesn't relate to white nationalism is the routine habit of people trying to bring an "indigenous" or "tribal" quality into it. This apparently translates to "emulating Indigenous American and/or Sami aesthetics, but swapping all the obvious cultural symbology with viking things."

I'd like to remind people that "tribe" simply describes one of many ways that societies structure themselves. This word has nothing to do with facepaint or shamanic drumming, and the only reason "tribal" is treated as an aesthetic is because "viking things" have been commercialized as such. The band Heilung is a good example of this.

I'm going to tell you something about Heathenry y'all probably aren't going to like: It's not exotic.

This "tribal" or "ancient" quality you see in Heathenry is a work of marketing. If you were to remove it from Heathenry, the identity of the spirituality would remain unchanged. This includes all of its diverse customs, beliefs, observances, and superstitions.

If Heathenry depended upon this aesthetic, this wouldn't be possible.

I think our committment to bringing a "tribal" aesthetic into Heathenry says more about our desire for a cultural identity than a desire for reconstruction. Which is fine, but we can do this without resorting to Appropriation Lite.
