Open call for submissions from Mad Artists. Looking for pieces that explore how psych survivors resist psychiatric violence, with a special focus on transforming our medical records. For more information and next steps to submit artwork, please go to https://tinyurl.com/psychsurvivorzine. For any questions, email Elliott at [email protected]]
Hello everyone! I am thrilled to announce that I'm searching for collaborators for the first edition of a Psych Survivor zine!! I've been working on this project for a while, and there are several other components that will be rolled out throughout this spring (if you aren't an artist/writer but still want to be involved, keep an eye out on my blog.) This zine is going to be physically published and hosted on a website created specifically for this project.
This zine is open to anyone who identifies as mad/mentally ill/neurodivergent/psych survivor/ex patient, and any form of art is welcome, whether that's poetry, critical essays, digital art, photography, or anything else. Due to funding constraints, I will likely only be selecting 10-13 people to add to this edition. This edition is focused specifically on abolishing and transforming our medical records, and click on the link above to read the full prompt.
Please feel free to email me or message me on tumblr with any further questions, and I'm so excited to hopefully work with some of you on this project!

୨⎯ series masterlist ⎯୧
(in case the video doesn't work, i'll leave you the poem here):
for even in the darkest of times, the moons and stars, they always gave you signs.
with each passing night, you learned more, of the art of loving and losing, and what else was in store.
back then, the gentle beat of his heart by your side,  comforted you like a river, making calm and serenity collide.
that night's bright light did glow, with a slender crescent in tow, along with stars above the green trees’ crown,  the deserted sand illuminating on its own.
the shadows of his lashes long, cast upon his blue cheeks, so strong, the constellation of freckles, like little diamonds,  his beauty almost ethereal to be described by words.
though you had known him for years, you never looked at him with such conscious fears,  his exhaustion was evident to see, the cuts on his shoulder, the wounds on his knee,  his chest held an elongated scar, that reminded you of the one on his hand so far,  you tried to avert your eyes, but failed, and let yourself sink back, blanket well-veiled.
a tattered poetry book, a relic of his father’s past,  that you gently reached for, its words meant to last,  the old paper, faded and so rough, the letters, black ink, good enough.
all I loved, I loved alone, the last words written, all unknown, you knew not much about poetry or rhyme,  but the words cast a spell that stole your time.
staring out at the endless sea, counting sheep,  with tears in your eyes, you finally found some sleep.
stars die softly, he had once said with a sigh,  wishing people could do the same, quietly passing by.
but you wished no one would die and no death would ever come near,  not on nights like this, neither now nor here.

When they're not doing that, they're a science & government communications specialist so they can do more audiodramas. They also play the know-it-all sustainability and weird vehicle fan cohost on What Drives Us and all things geeky special guest on The Vertical Panel podcast.

Without public distribution channels, the special issue of Xiaoniao lives as a PDF passed around among friends. “I have no idea how far it has reached,” Yang said. “There is something samizdat-like to it,” she said, referring to the underground literature of 20th-century Eastern Europe, which circulated hand to hand. In today’s China, people create knowing that publishing is transient in nature — online articles can be taken down; books can be removed from the shelves; writers can be blacklisted; bloggers can be “disappeared.” (One of the websites Xiaoyin frequented, Poetry Life, announced its shutdown on July 13. “Poetry Life was born on the internet where it will dissipate,” the announcement read. “It has been a mirage as well as our real land.”)

UC San Diego Library’s Special Collections & Archives Acquires its First African Americana Collection
Collection chronicles the African American experience post-Civil War and documents migration West
LA JOLLA, CA—The UC San Diego Library announced today the addition of its first African Americana collection—the Turner Collection—to its Special Collections & Archives (SC&A). Donated by Steve Turner, a UC San Diego alumnus ‘82 and an avid collector, the collection is comprised of more than 300 items including rare photographs, pamphlets, photocards, posters and pinback buttons, many from the 19th century and all of which shed new light on the African American experience, particularly in the American West.
“We are honored to have received this collection,” said Erik Mitchell, the Audrey Geisel University Librarian. “Each piece offers a window into American history, showing a different perspective on times past—how compelling and necessary. It is our pleasure to present these materials to the UC San Diego community and public through our Special Collections & Archives.”
Turner’s focus was on a less well-known migration of African Americans to the West that preceded the great migration from the South between 1916 and 1970. His collection brings to light the story of pioneer immigrants who moved west after the Civil War and before World War II.
Turner wrote, “Their story is one of achievement, participation and the pursuit of the American dream. They range from ordinary citizens to civic leaders and include everything in between… As these items migrate from my collection, I hope that a new generation of scholars will work to flesh out new understandings of both places and peoples.”
Library staff are currently working to digitize many of the materials in the Turner Collection in order to make them readily available to the community via the Library’s Digital Collections website.
“We are confident that these materials will be highly sought after for research and instruction at the university,” said Lynda Claassen, longtime director of the Library’s Special Collections & Archives. “We plan to digitize as many of the materials as possible, thereby expanding their reach, and hope to complete the digitization by year end.”
Today, the UC San Diego Library provides access to more than 7 million digital and print volumes, journals and multimedia materials. The Turner Collection will join other prominent collections housed in the Library’s Special Collections & Archives, located at Geisel Library, including the Hill Collection of Pacific Voyages, Southworth Spanish Civil War Collection, Archive for New Poetry and many more.
While Geisel Library remains closed due to the pandemic, Special Collections & Archives is offering research appointments for UC San Diego students, faculty and staff. Research appointments are limited to requests that are not available online, or that cannot be fulfilled through the Library’s remote service offerings.
For more information about the Turner Collection, please email [email protected].

KiScon 2022
*** Save the date: KiScon 2022 will take place 4-6 November! The event will be entirely online. ***
Dear K/S friends,
Greetings! Time flies – it’s been a month since our last newsletter and since we announced KiScon 2022, so here we are with our first progress report. 1. Registration Almost 40 people have already registered for the virtual KiScon; we are delighted to see both familiar and new fans among our members.  You can sign up for our virtual KiScon 2022 directly on Conline. Please note: registration is a 2-step process: 1) click “Join” to enter the KiScon area on Conline, then 2) click “Registration” to sign up for our 2022 convention. For a detailed explanation with screenshots, you can download this handy How-To (pdf). We recommend that you use a fannish name for your Conline profile, ideally your badge name (if you usually put both your real name and your fannish name on convention badges, only use the fannish part). We have also prepared a detailed guide for setting up or editing your Conline profile. 2. KiScon Discord Our KiScon Discord server (or shall we call it a “KiScord”?) is slowly filling with members and lively discussion. You can join it by following this invite link. For the convention weekend, there will be special channels for activities and chat, exclusive to con attendees. We will also create "Starfleet Academy" channels a week before the con, for training and practice, so that members can get used to the virtual setting and try out things.  The server also features general channels that will be open year-round, both for past KiScon members and for fans interested in KiScon. All Trek and K/S discussion very welcome! To make things a bit easier for the con staff, we’d appreciate if you could add your badge name also to your Discord profile name so that we know who is who. :-) As always with all things computer and internet, we are very happy to help you if you have questions or encounter problems. We want to make this experience of a virtual KiScon as pleasant and smooth as possible for you. 3. Con Zine: send us your submissions! We are very happy that Carleen will once again be our editor for the con zine. She did an amazing job with the 2019 zine. Please see this message from her:
"Captain, you almost make me believe in luck." — Mr. Spock "Spock, you almost make me believe in miracles." — Captain Kirk Just when we thought it might never happen again. It's happening! Thanks to those of you who worked so hard to make it happen. Since no KiScon is complete without a zine, we'd better get started. To do that, I need your help. So, email your artwork, stories, and poetry to Carleen at kszinesubs @ gmail.com. The deadline for all work is August 1, 2022. No limits on worlds, ratings, movies, timelines, or crossovers. But it does need to feature Kirk/Spock. Do me a favour and shoot me an email if you plan to submit something. That gives me a heads up on what to expect — looking forward to being your editor again. Do not hesitate to use that email address for questions.   Carleen
4. AO3 Collection: gems from past KiScon zines Speaking of con zines, we had a good look at the zines of past conventions. The KiScon con zines have a long and beautiful tradition, going back to 1999. Over 200 fanworks – fic, art, poetry, plays – were submitted to these zines over the years. Some of these fanworks have since found their way to the AO3. We try to gather as many as possible in the dedicated AO3 collection: KiScon – The Official Zine. If you contributed to the KiScon con zine in the past, please add your work to this collection. If you need help (e.g. with embedding art on the AO3), please get in touch with us. We’d love to help. 5. Where to find information & announcements: Official website KiScon Discord server Tumblr blog Twitter Conline Facebook Group Dreamwidth Stay tuned for more information on ways to participate and contribute to this convention! We’ll talk about the vidshows and other activities in our next newsletter. 6. Last but not least, allow us to signal boost a fic and art fest that is currently taking place: Kirk/Spock Spring Fever – see the collection profile on the AO3 and this post on the Dreamwidth community for detailed information. The collection Yours in K/S,
T’Lara and Judy

Wow… I want to thank The Hole in the Head Review for seeing the potential in my first ever short film. I’m forever grateful to them because this work of mine holds a special place in my heart. I’ve always wanted to get it out there, and I’m excited to announce that the day has finally arrived. I filmed “Atom” about 9 years ago already, most of it all by myself with a little help from my friend Paul. That was around the same when we filmed a couple of short sketches and one other silent short film before we stopped. Other than a spoken word nature film I worked on alone soon after that, I hadn’t revisited making film until last year acting in a friend’s short, currently in post production. Before I received the news about this wonderful achievement, I decided to give screenwriting another go and began writing a very personal script at the beginning of this year all the while writing new poetry and balancing work, so it’s something to look forward to later during 2022. Please check out and watch the full film on their website by accessing the link in my bio under Films. Lastly, thank you if you’ve ever supported any of my art. Really. Film synopsis: A day in the life of a lonely man who has depression after a heartbreak. Will Atom’s self-reflection lead him down a dark, hopeless path or will he somehow find hope despite his loss? 🎶🎵 by @julioc_04 https://www.instagram.com/p/CZfmIN-rA2e/?utm_medium=tumblr

New Acquisition: The Brooklyn Art Press Records
The Martha Blakeney Hodges Special Collections & University Archives is pleased to announce the acquisition of the records and publications of the Brooklyn Arts Press. Brooklyn Arts Press (BAP) is devoted to publishing new works by emerging artists. The purpose of the press is to serve the community by publishing great works of varying aesthetics side by side, subverting the notion that writers and artists exist in vacuums, apart from the culture in which they reside and outside the realm and understanding of other camps and aesthetics. The press believes experimentation and innovation, arriving by way of given forms or new ones, make our culture greater through diversity of perspective, opinion, expression, and spirit. The collection also includes material relating to Augury Books, an imprint of BAP since its incorporation in 2017. Augury Books authors have received awards such as the O. Henry prize for short fiction, the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s “Discover” Award for creative nonfiction, and the Tony Quagliano International Poetry Award. Authors have also been nominated for the CLMP Firecracker award, the Lambda Literary Arts award, and have been featured on the Poetry Society of America’s and the Academy of American Poets website.
The Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of the Brooklyn Arts Press, Joe Pan, is a graduate of UNC Greensboro’s Department of English, having studied with Fred Chappell, Stuart Dischell, and Lee Zacharias. He also worked as an intern on the Greensboro Review with Jim Clark.

Astoria brewery Buoy Beer Company announces anniversary date and an update to their can labels, starting with Another IPA and Maibock.
Press Release
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ASTORIA, OREGON - Buoy Beer Company has unveiled new branding for their 16 oz cans with the release of their spring seasonal, Another IPA, and a new lager series beginning with Maibock. The redesign transforms the elements of the iconic Buoy Beer logo into a look that’s modernly classic. Printed on a traditional press, the updated labels bring a clean, timeless look to the company’s seasonal line and even feature fisher-style poetry:
“We’re excited to showcase our rotating beers in a new way,” said David Kroening, President of Buoy Beer. “Our recent expansion has given us some breathing room to explore new styles and grow our favorites.”
The Buoy lager series has been years in the making and now with a larger brewing capacity, it’s coming to fruition. It will include 5 different lagers throughout 2022, starting with a Maibock this March. Buoy’s Maibock is a celebration of Spring - a traditional, smooth lager brewed with Pilsen, Vienna, and Munich hops, featuring Sazz and Sterling hops and abloom with flavor.
"Because lagers are both simple and complex, many brewers look to them as the pinnacle of brewing," said Matt Jones, Head Brewer. "In this series we want to showcase Buoy's ability to capture nuance and flavor through a combination of good malt, a solid lager yeast, noble hops, and proper conditioning. My favorite aspect of craft beer is the idea of bringing world traditions home, where the beer is closer and fresher. This is what we hope to do with our rotating lager series."
Another IPA is back for this Spring’s seasonal selection. A favorite among the brewers (and just about everyone else), Another IPA feeds the thirst for a crushable, hopped-up, crisp beer and will hit the stores in Oregon and Washington through June.
Tropical, citrusy, and dank to the max - what more could you want in Another IPA? Light in color, this American IPA is hop-focused, packed with Strata, El Dorado, and Comet hops. Another IPA is the beer-sonification of the Pacific Northwest on a stunningly crisp and clear day.
"Another IPA has been a nice seasonal addition to the Buoy core lineup and compliments the year-round IPA well," said Kevin Shaw, Director of Brewery Operations. "While the original IPA is a bit of a throwback style-wise, Another IPA is brewed with several of the newer, more popular hop varieties including Strata and El Dorado. The original IPA has notes of melon, citrus and pine, while Another IPA is tropical and dank. We love how different they are from each other and how they work well together to offer something unique in each."
With lagers on the mind, Buoy Beer will transition their (usually) annual anniversary celebration into a Springtime lager festival called Frühlingsfest. On May 14th from 12-8pm, guests can enjoy lagers from 10 guest breweries, three of Buoy’s own specialty lagers, live music, and riverside views that never get old. The festival will offer special event mugs and tokens and is perfect for both lager lovers and those wanting to explore more of what this fermentation style has to offer.
"In 2019, Buoy hosted a party with music and a few guest taps to celebrate our 5th anniversary. It also served as a test event for a spring lager festival we planned for 2020," said Jessyka Dart-Mclean, Marketing Manager. "Alas, that never happened, so we've moved it to this year! Frühlingsfest will be held on May 14th (the day before we host the Run On The River) and will feature guest brewers, music, specialty glasses, the whole shebang!"
RSVP to the festival event on Facebook or check the website for updated information.

4/18/2022 DAB Chronological Transcription
Psalm 17, Psalm 35, Psalm 54, Psalm 63
Welcome to Daily Audio Bible Chronological. Today is the 18th April and I'm Jill. It's my joy and my pleasure and my honor to be here with you this week as we journey you through the Word of God in chronological order today and every day. And because we're reading in chronological order, we kind of skip around. If you are following along in your Bible and you're like, how did we get to Psalms 17, 35, 54 and 63 today? It's because we are reading it in chronological order as best as historians, theologians can gather. Looking forward to a great week being here with you, as we jump in, dive in to the word today. We'll begin today with Psalm 17. And this week we're reading the New Living Translation.
Commentary
I like this particular scripture at this point in the Bible in chronological order because the way that I see it in my mind is that the scripture starts becoming 3D. We have the story yesterday that happened in 1st Samuel. And then we get a deeper look into the heart of David through his prayers, through his songs, through his lament, through his begging God to take care of his enemies for him. I mean, certainly we have never done such a thing right? To pray and wish for there to be a special place in hell for those that have opposed us. I will say at least David is taking it to God himself, asking God to take care of it, asking to be rescued from the very people that are taunting him, trying to kill him. And we have this vicious dance between David and Saul, and this will continue back and forth a bit. And then these Psalms today are just a peek into the heart of what is flowing out of David. He is just this emotional, creative creature. And us emotional, creative creatures, we kind of speak a language all our own. So that gives us a little context of why we are weaving in and out of the story and into the Psalms. And then we'll be back into the story tomorrow. There's a little bit of context to hold on to as we weave in and out.
Prayer
So, Father, we thank you for your word today. I am grateful that we hear David's cries, his prayers, his lament, his songs, his poetry, his desperate pleas. And we too, have those. And so often we take them to the wrong people. And we see here where David brings them directly to you. What a great reminder that is for us. One, that we can do so, and two, that you are capable of handling it. And three, that you hear us and you care. So we are grateful. We are thankful. And let us not stay in that place of constant pleading and constantly needing something from you. But let us remember to come back if you think if you pray for all that you've done and all that you have not done because you know best, we forget that sometimes about a good and loving father knows exactly when to tell us no. As much as they know when to say yes, grateful, pray this now in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen.

Good morning, Daily Audio Bible. It's been such a great four months that I've been present on this line. Today I am reaching out to ask for prayer for my daughter. She's been going through about a depression and I feel like I don't have an answer to our problem. I'm trying the best that I can to be there for her, to love upon her, to care for her, to meet her at her needs. But right now she's at a standstill and she doesn't want any outside help. So I just asked if everyone can please just say a prayer for her, that this depression be released and that she'll be able to get back to her normal life, pray for the family as well as we are all just trying out best to love upon her and to give her everything that she can possibly need. We are only human and we know that God is a God of miracles far and beyond what we can do. So the word says brand number changes things and I just asked that you just sign up.
Hi, this is my first time calling in and I just recently found your website, your channel. I want to say thank you for the commitment that you have chosen to do in reading the word daily for us. I find it very helpful. I'd like special prayer for myself and my daughter. Our relationship has become strained and honestly, I am unsure of what or why this is happening. It was sudden and shocking and hurtful and painful and I just like prayer because I'd like it resolved. Thank you so much and God bless you.
Hello, this message is to gentlemen who called in identifying himself as unknown from the northeast part of United States, concerned about his marriage and the fact that it may be dissolved. I'm just calling to encourage you, brother. There's a man that has been married for 41 years. Life is hard and marriage can be hard, but please don't give up. I pray to God that he would give you insight and when he does get that give you that insight. I just hope that you will grasp onto that insight and realize that God is directing you. Please focus on the needs of your wife and just let her be your main focus so that you can start to rebuild your marriage. God bless you and hopefully you're able to get this message. Take care. Bye bye.
