ever wonder why spotify/discord/teams desktop apps kind of suck?
i don't do a lot of long form posts but. I realized that so many people aren't aware that a lot of the enshittification of using computers in the past decade or so has a lot to do with embedded webapps becoming so frequently used instead of creating native programs. and boy do i have some thoughts about this.
for those who are not blessed/cursed with computers knowledge Basically most (graphical) programs used to be native programs (ever since we started widely using a graphical interface instead of just a text-based terminal). these are apps that feel like when you open up the settings on your computer, and one of the factors that make windows and mac programs look different (bc they use a different design language!) this was the standard for a long long time - your emails were served to you in a special email application like thunderbird or outlook, your documents were processed in something like microsoft word (again. On your own computer!). same goes for calendars, calculators, spreadsheets, and a whole bunch more - crucially, your computer didn't depend on the internet to do basic things, but being connected to the web was very much an appreciated luxury!
that leads us to the eventual rise of webapps that we are all so painfully familiar with today - gmail dot com/outlook, google docs, google/microsoft calendar, and so on. as html/css/js technology grew beyond just displaying text images and such, it became clear that it could be a lot more convenient to just run programs on some server somewhere, and serve the front end on a web interface for anyone to use. this is really very convenient!!!! it Also means a huge concentration of power (notice how suddenly google is one company providing you the SERVICE) - you're renting instead of owning. which means google is your landlord - the services you use every day are first and foremost means of hitting the year over year profit quota. its a pretty sweet deal to have a free email account in exchange for ads! email accounts used to be paid (simply because the provider had to store your emails somewhere. which takes up storage space which is physical hard drives), but now the standard as of hotmail/yahoo/gmail is to just provide a free service and shove ads in as much as you need to.
webapps can do a lot of things, but they didn't immediately replace software like skype or code editors or music players - software that requires more heavy system interaction or snappy audio/visual responses. in 2013, the electron framework came out - a way of packaging up a bundle of html/css/js into a neat little crossplatform application that could be downloaded and run like any other native application. there were significant upsides to this - web developers could suddenly use their webapp skills to build desktop applications that ran on any computer as long as it could support chrome*! the first applications to be built on electron were the late code editor atom (rest in peace), but soon a whole lot of companies took note! some notable contemporary applications that use electron, or a similar webapp-embedded-in-a-little-chrome as a base are:
microsoft teams
notion
vscode
discord
spotify
anyone! who has paid even a little bit of attention to their computer - especially when using older/budget computers - know just how much having chrome open can slow down your computer (firefox as well to a lesser extent. because its just built better <3)
whenever you have one of these programs open on your computer, it's running in a one-tab chrome browser. there is a whole extra chrome open just to run your discord. if you have discord, spotify, and notion open all at once, along with chrome itself, that's four chromes. needless to say, this uses a LOT of resources to deliver applications that are often much less polished and less integrated with the rest of the operating system. it also means that if you have no internet connection, sometimes the apps straight up do not work, since much of them rely heavily on being connected to their servers, where the heavy lifting is done.
taking this idea to the very furthest is the concept of chromebooks - dinky little laptops that were created to only run a web browser and webapps - simply a vessel to access the google dot com mothership. they have gotten better at running offline android/linux applications, but often the $200 chromebooks that are bought in bulk have almost no processing power of their own - why would you even need it? you have everything you could possibly need in the warm embrace of google!
all in all the average person in the modern age, using computers in the mainstream way, owns very little of their means of computing.
i started this post as a rant about the electron/webapp framework because i think that it sucks and it displaces proper programs. and now ive swiveled into getting pissed off at software services which is in honestly the core issue. and i think things can be better!!!!!!!!!!! but to think about better computing culture one has to imagine living outside of capitalism.
i'm not the one to try to explain permacomputing specifically because there's already wonderful literature ^ but if anything here interested you, read this!!!!!!!!!! there is a beautiful world where computers live for decades and do less but do it well. and you just own it. come frolic with me Okay ? :]
*when i say chrome i technically mean chromium. but functionally it's same thing

spotify's current price for premium in the US is $10.99/month, which is a dollar more than before they raised it for the first time recently. the average mcdonald big mac in america costs approximately $5.15. at the new price, you are losing the equivalent of 1 mcdonald big mac every 5 months, which is a tragic loss. however, if you cancel spotify premium, you will be gaining the equivalent of over 2 mcdonald big mac every month, or 25.6 mcdonald big mac per year.
you are a 14 year old tiktok user living in america. (no you're not, i know. we're playing pretend right now. come play in the sand with me. do you want to build a sandcastle). it just so happens that the 13th of april is your birthday, and you just had a birthday and got some birthday money. you've been getting really into [popular artist of ur choice], and you want to listen to them while you're on the bus to school, so you buy spotify premium. you start with the 3 month free trial and when it ends you remember how unbearable the ads are and renew your plan. you have this plan until you go to a four-year college, when you get the student plan. once you leave college, you split the family plan with 3 friends (you have 3 friends after leaving college, so you're already winning). you keep this for a year before becoming disillusioned with streaming services and cancelling your spotify premium plan for good.
in high school, you used spotify premium for 52 months, at $10.99 a month. in college, you used the spotify student premium plan for 48 months, at $5.99 a month. and before you began downloading music off the internet, you used the family plan for 12 months and paid one quarter of the price, $4.25. overall, you have spent $877.03 on spotify premium in less than a decade, not accounting for price changes. this is equivalent to over 170 mcdonald cheeseburger. if the average american eats fast food 1-3 times a week, and you mcdonald cheeseburger two times a week, that's 85 weeks of cheeseburger. 1.6 years of cheeseburger.
or let's say you're a tumblr user. you run a blog where you mainly post about various 80s and 90s rock musicians, and you enjoy listening to music. you've been thinking about getting spotify premium because you're using the free version and the ads are annoying. you figure even though it's $11/month, spotify premium is probably the better option.
a year of spotify costs you $131.88. five years is $659.40. a decade is $1318.80. 60 years is $7,912.80.
or maybe, you post about your desire for spotify premium and your tumblr mutuals immediately start keeling over and sobbing and writhing in pain. your friend stresses the importance of physical media and the fun of piracy, and you decide to believe them and you go to the nearest record store. the store i'm currently looking at online, which i won't say the name of because it's fairly regional, sells cds. most of them seem to be around $13 new or $8 used. you don't really care about buying things used as long as they work, so you tend to go for the used options, but you can be talked into a little treat every once in a while. you burn some CDs from your favorite popular artists, because you know they won't miss the $50 you just saved yourself, and then every month you buy yourself a cd or two from the record store.
after a year, you've bought 13 used cds and 2 new ones for a total of $130. after five years, you've spent $650. after a decade, $1,300. and in sixty years, when you're in your elder years, you'll have spent a grand total of $7,800. but unlike in the alternate universe where you spent $7,912.80, you own all the music you bought (or burned onto CDs). you can pass things down to your grandkids/pet fish/guy down the street who's really into vintage technology who will be excited to inherit them. or over the years if you're less interested in an artist's music you can sell them and get (some of, if not all of) your money back. and when spotify takes your favorite artist's music down or when your phone suddenly breaks, you can still listen to your music. music that you paid for.
you're an american. will you buy cheeseburger and rock and roll disc as god intended, or will pay the devil $10.99 a month to steal your soul?

'fruity four' modern hcs
hii this is my first post so i wanted to do something easy to put myself out there :)
eddie munson: - defo has a kirk hammett tiktok fan account where he tries his best to edit him - it's not even a secret fan account, though, it's openly him and he shares it with all his friends - whenever he posts something new his friends are the first to like it, although he's got an impressive amount of followers - the epitome of 'babe wake up, a new kirk hammett edit just dropped' - on a different note, defo plays animal crossing with dustin and they visit each others' islands - this is something he doesn't share with anyone else apart from dustin, though - he thinks it's 'not very metal of him' - still loves all the same music he did in the eighties: metallica, iron maiden, black sabbath etc. - has a hatred for any mainstream artists like harry styles, lorde etc - nothing personal he just hates the style - the closest he's got to a mainstream artist is taylor swift because of nancy and robin, still didn't like her much, though
steve harrington: - spams his private snapchat story with tiktoks, funny and sad ones - this story is his entire livelihood, it consists of the party and the fruity four - it's annoying sometimes but most of the time they enjoy looking at it - he also has every games console under the sun and loves playing fortnite and minecraft unironically - probably the nerdiest thing he does - loves jenna ortega and literally watches anything she's in because he's a massive fangirl - not in a weird way like all those tiktok boys but he literally thinks shes such an amazing actor and watches everything she's in - even watched stuck in the middle for her when he was younger - that's where his fangirling started - loves arctic monkeys and the 1975 - also an avid stevie nicks and fleetwood mac fan
nancy wheeler: - 100% a pinterest girlie - has a board for everything and it's all so organised - if there's something major going on in her life that she's planning e.g., a party or a gathering, you can trust that she has a pinterest board for it - doesn't have instagram because she refuses to download it due to its 'hyperfixation on boosting unrealistic beauty standards and lifestyles' (her words not mine) - despises reality tv for the same reasons - swiftie, enough said. - 1989, lover, debut, speak now swiftie
robin buckley: - unironically stans harry styles but that's okay - as much as she loves harry styles, she also loves old music - her go to is blondie - has the nicest 'pinterest' aesthetic bedroom with those prints and posters everywhere - also a swiftie - folklore, reputation, lover, evermore, midnights swiftie - adores pop culture - celebrities, interviews, magazines and celeb drama are what she lives for - annoys nancy with it because nance hates that stuff but she doesn't mind because robin's her friend - pays for a spotify premium family for her friends (the fruity four) instead of getting them birthday gifts because she loves music so much and believes it's the 'best gift anyone could give' and way more worth it than a physical materialistic item - obsessed with jellycats
tysm for reading! i'd love to hear what you think. feel free to look on my page at what i'm comfortable writing and then make a request :) i don't just write for stranger things, either!

request for peter quill x fem!reader (personality wise shes a female him.)
Maybe they meet after vol 3 and shes working at a hole in the wall recording studio\record store in Missouri and he comes in one day, complletly confused on what hes looking for till he finds some cassette tapes and goes on and on explaining diferrent music to her (bonus points if she already knows most of it.)
Records- Peter Quill
Minor GOTG3 SPOILERS.
It was a typical day for you working in the record store, not many people come in here unless it's fans of artists buying the new album. or old people buying vinyl because they don't know how to use a platform to stream it.
You would put in orders for the new releases and classics depending on the demand. you knew every person who walks in here would often come to buy an album for someone or themselves.
until a dark blond man with soft long curls hanging down his forehead walked through the doors of the store. He was tall and buff. I mean, very he looked big and jacked with muscles.
you never bothered customers when they come in unless they look like they are searching for something or need help.
you left that beautiful man to roam the place, but he seemed like he couldn't find what he wanted so you went and approached him.
"Hey, can I help you with something?c you asked the man.
He looks up to you, smiling. "Yeah, I'm looking for Redbone cassette tapes." He answered.
Damn he got blue eyes that melted your heart.
"Unfortunately, we only have LP Vinyls. Most cassette tapes stopped producing a long time ago."
"Why is that."
"Well, I don't really know. Most people collect cds or vinyls, and cassette tapes aren't really worth much if the artist isn't famous." You replied.
Cassettes is still a thing, but no one really buys them unless they have an old car or just to collect them.
"But readbone is famous."
"They are I know but they don't produce them anymore you can try cds."
"But they are big to carry around."
Confusion hits you. Why would he carry around tapes?
"You can find people selling them on eBay, but they are preownd, I can order them for you, but they will be pricey. Besides, you can listen to them on Spotify."
"What's Spotify?"
Huh?
How does he not know Spotify?
It's been here for a really long time.
"You don't know what is Spotify?"
He shakes his head in confusion.
"Do you have a phone?"
"Yeah, at home, but it's attached to a landline."
"No a smart phone. Like mine." You pull your phone from your pocket showing it to him.
"What's that?"
"It's a phone you can call and take photos, watch videos and stuff." You said
Is he a time traveller?
"Wow thats cool."
"Well you can download this app and you will find all kinds of music; 70s, indie, hip hop, Arabic, Latino and all artists."
"You're saying I don't need tapes I could just play what I want?" You nodded you gave him your phone to check it out. He rolled through your liked songs.
you don't have a specific taste you listened to a bit of everything.
"I should get myself one of these." he laughs he paused looking at the phone. "The chain?"
"Yeah, it's a classic one of my favourite songs from Fleetwood Mac." you chuckled tucking your hair behind your ears. you never really get flustered talking to anyone but he was something else.
his gaze was intensely on you holding fierce eye contact with you
"Alright I got everything I needed thank you y/n." he reads your name tag snapping you out of this enchanted moment
"you're welcome..."
"Peter," he replies
"Well, I hope I get to see you again Peter."
"Me too."

how i pirate music
i'm seeing old posts hating on spotify circulating again, so i'll describe how i listen to music without paying for streaming
discovery through cracked spotify
i discover a lot of music through cracked versions of spotify. i'm in a number of circles that do music shares and i stream recommendations a few times before i decide to download anything
windows
i use the spot x modified client on my desktop: https://github.com/amd64fox/SpotX/. be sure to cancel your spotify subscription and remove your payment information before logging into any cracked version of spotify
android
these websites come and go, but you should be able to look up "spotify apk" and find a one button installation. you can get an up-to-date safe link by visiting the database in this reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/ApksApps/comments/pcy1io/apksapps_official_megathread_apksme/
mac
i don't want to put anything weird on my work computer, which uses mac os, but if i control the music through my phone, then select my mac as the audio output device via spotify, i can listen ad free. here's the feature if you've not used it before: https://support.spotify.com/us/article/spotify-connect/
downloading music
file share
i download almost everything with soulseek, a p2p file sharing program: http://www.soulseekqt.net/. first you'll make a directory of music that you already have (say, from bandcamp) and soulseek will broadcast that to the world. you can then search other people's files for music you want and download it there
torrenting
i use the torrent client deluge: https://deluge-torrent.org/ and get my links from https://www.1377x.to/. you should use a vpn when torrenting; i happen to use surfshark because it's cheap. it is not perfect and if you want to torrent stuff there's better guides out there explaining how to do it safely
paying, but sticking it to the man
i buy more music now than i ever did when paying for streaming. i personally just use bandcamp, but i know people who use/rip CDs and other physical media. it's nice to support small artists and to upload big artists onto soulseek so other people can find it
audio quality
downloaded music is likely going to be higher quality than streamed music. if you don't know anything about audio quality i'd recommend downloading 320kps mp3 files. you can add a minbitrate filter at the bottom of your soulseek window. you've probably heard of FLAC before, but if you want to see how deep it goes, look up DSD or SACD
listening to downloaded music
windows
i use foobar2000: https://www.foobar2000.org/. it's designed to be modular and customizable, so it takes a little fiddling to get running. to start using it, i recommend: making a playlist and adding a file location of all your music (which should be your soulseek up and down directories). you can later make playlists of specific albums and tracks. then, look online for components like a theme or last.fm scrobbles if you want that kind of thing. last.fm scrobbles can be a great way to discover new music
android
foobar2000 recently released a mobile version but i haven't tried that yet. i use vinyl music player for no reason in particular: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.poupa.vinylmusicplayer
final notes
this isn't about doing music better; i just happen to like doing things this way. i still hang out and listen to my friends' cytube on loop. i blast nightcore on youtube. the goal is to listen to music and have a good time so do whatever is best for you

your fall out buck post is awesome do you have any other thoughts on what music you think buck would listen to ?
for some reason my mind interpreted this as eddie not buck and by the time i noticed when you meant i had already compiled a list for eddie so you get both! under the cut because, as usual, this got pretty long.
also here is my fall out buck post if you haven't seen it :)
buck—
i think aside from fall out boy, he was very into green day up through his early twenties. he was 21 in 2013, so there's no way he didn't also go through an arctic monkeys moment, blasting flourescent adolescent in his earbuds all the time.
"flicking through a little book of sex tips / remember when the boys were all electric" was a lyric that'd get stuck in his head constantly as he bartended
also, the chance of buck not being an imagine dragons fan is zero.
i definitely also headcanon he had his white boy rap phase. i mean, c'mon, the guy was 26 in 2018. between 2016 (24) to 2018 (26) we had blond, coloring book, the life of pablo, starboy, damn, flower boy, astro world...you get it. and buck in LA during this time, going through the academy in southern california? yeah, he listened to drake.
i think he has his soft pop favs now. i think he's mostly past the rap, still listens to his pop punk music but more in a nostalgic sense. i do think current buck is a big fan of noah kahan, walk the moon (specifically what if nothing, though he found them through shut up and dance), some hozier, a good bit of sufjan stevens and phoebe bridgers on a sad song playlist he has set to private.
he's definitely the type to listen to one song on repeat for days, and i think that happened with some of the songs off melodrama by lorde to the point that they were his top songs on his spotify wrapped, even if she wasn't one of his top artists.
something about buck listening to supercut as he drives around LA late at night you know?
"cause in my head (in my head i do everything right) / when you call (when you call, i'll forgive and not fight)"
or
"i'll be your quiet afternoon crush / be your violent overnight rush / make you crazy over my touch / but it's just a supercut of us"
when he's pining for eddie??? come onnnnnn
eddie—
eddie listens to classic rock, country music, and has a spanish songs playlist sophia made titled "canciones favoritas" that he has downloaded on his spotify.
he loves pink floyd, i think he's a big eagles fan, no doubt in my mind he listened to a LOT of the beatles growing up, and if you think he doesn't know every word to rumours by fleetwood mac, you've got another thing coming. eddie hums rhiannon under his breath as he cooks, a gentle rhythm that fills up his kitchen.
(buck's a little bit in love with his voice, always tries to bug him into singing out loud, and usually ends with them duetting queen loud enough for christopher to complain from his bedroom.)
but he's also from texas! he's got his classic country faves, privately listened to dolly parton whenever the house was empty. definitely a big george strait, willie nelson, rascal flatts fan. loves a good carrie underwood song, and he'll say it's because of his sisters until the day he dies.
(it's really not. there's just something about female country that eddie loves.)
his favorite song, though, now that he's older and in love and a huge sap is still the one by shania twain.
"looks like we made it / look how far we've come my baby / might've took the long way / we knew we'd get there someday"
"you're still the one i run to / the one that i belong to / you're still the one i want for life / you're still the one that i love / the only one i dream of"
he plays it for buck one night and they slow dance in the living room and eddie feels more love in his body than he ever thought possible, thanks.
now, the spanish song playlist. it has a truly absurd amount of selena.
like.
so much selena.
also gloria estefan, celia cruz, and enrique inglesias' 1995 album that he used to hate as a teenager but that, admittedly, grew on him.
i've included this in a fic, but i stand by it. i think one of eddie's favorite songs is algo contigo by rita payés and elisabeth roma.
"what is missing is me telling you that I would die to have something with you / and it is that you have not given account of how much it costs me to be your friend / now I can not get close to your mouth without wanting it in a crazy way"
(^ the lyrics are in spanish but this an english translation)
also every time eddie listens to baila esta cumbia or bidi bidi bom bom he subconsciously starts dancing to it and the way he sways his hips drives buck crazy <3
okay i hope this is good!!! i've been thinking about eddie's a lot lately, i could probably do a more in depth lyric analysis like i did with my fall out buck post if anyone would be interested :)

SWIFTIE COMMUNITY PSA: HOW TO LISTEN TO HITS DIFFERENT ON SPOTIFY WITH LOCAL FILES
i have seen way too many posts begging TN to put hits different on streaming. even some posts saying they have to listen to the song on tumblr of all places. there is a solution my friends! you can add hits different to spotify! not only hits different but also i'd lie and wanegbt rock version and any other non-streaming song your heart desires. all you need is a computer!
disclaimer: i am an apple music user and have never used spotify super regularly. but i tested this process myself and i was able to play my local files through spotify (including without an internet connection), on both my iphone and my android tablet. please feel free to message me with any issues and i will try to help!
STEP 1: DOWNLOAD THE FILE(S) ON YOUR COMPUTER
here is a link to hits different. i have virtually all unreleased taylor songs here. visit @midnightsacousticlive for live performance tracks and tours!!!!! the file should be in .mp3 or .m4a format and it will probably go into your Downloads folder. if you download a .zip folder, you can usually double click to unzip it, or right click to extract the files.
ANDROID USERS: you can download the file directly on your phone and skip step 2!
STEP 2: ADD TO YOUR PHONE
manual option:
if you ever added a CD to itunes and put it on your ipod/iphone, that is basically what we are doing now. you will need to turn on manual control and then you can drag the track to your phone on the itunes sidebar. if you have never done this before or you are having trouble, this article should help! (if you are on windows instead of mac, use the directions for "macOS mojave or earlier")
sync option:
if you have other music in your itunes you may not want to use this option unless you're familiar with how the itunes library works, because you may end up accidentally syncing a bunch of stuff you don't want. this apple help guide can show you how to use syncing!
secret third option (desktop method):
this option doesn't require itunes or connecting your phone. it does require spotify premium to listen to the songs outside of your home wifi. if you are having difficulty with the other way this is a good choice for you! here is a link to an article that tells you how.
STEP 3: ENABLE LOCAL FILES ON SPOTIFY
go into your settings in the spotify app on your phone. at the bottom you will see Local Files. click on that and switch it on. spotify will make a playlist for you called Local Files, where you will see all the music downloaded to your phone outside of spotify. you can now listen to them within the spotify app, add them to your playlists, etc! here is spotify's guide page about local files.
STEP 4: LISTEN TO HITS DIFFERENT ON THE REGULAR AS HER MAJESTY INTENDED

Teach me your Spotify local files ways (please)
1. Download the song here. It will go directly into your music library if you have a Mac after you click download on the site
2. Add song to iPhone music library from computer music library/iTunes
3. Turn on local files on your phone Spotify app settings, “local files” will show up as a playlist
4. Add to other playlists and enjoy :)
Note that the song will only play on your phone where it is downloaded and will show up grayed out on other devices!

please will you talk more about soulseek? it sounds interesting but their faq is a little vague.. do you use it for music?
you use it to download music, yeah! it’s a p2p system, so basically every user specifies certain folders (or none at all, though this is considered impolite) to share with the rest of the network — you can choose if you’d like your folder/s to be public or private/only for people in your buddy list. i believe it blocks certain extensions, so it’s difficult to find malware there, which is a big plus over old p2p clients like limewire. a couple of clients for it exist — i personally use nicotine+, but that’s largely a matter of personal preference; soulseek and soulseekQt also both work absolutely fine!
it’s most useful for finding slightly more obscure stuff i think, stuff that isn’t on streaming services, especially since programs exist to download music off spotify/tidal/deezer. i used it a lot back in 2014/15 before i caved and got spotify lmao. but yeah, it’s fairly easy/safe to use! it’s not available on iphone (it miiiiight be on android, i’m not sure) but it is on windows/mac/a bunch of popular linux distros! feel free to ask me if there anything i haven’t covered — i wrote this quickly on my phone, so i’m sure there’s plenty haha
