mark lee is the boy you spend spring break with. you’d managed to get on a study abroad trip to europe for the vacation, but as the only person from your friend group going, you’d worried about spending the week and a half alone. thank god, then, that mark is also the only one from his friend group going.
you connect during the bi-weekly class sessions leading up to your departure, sitting alone near the back of the small lecture hall. you chat before the faculty leader starts speaking and you giggle amongst yourselves when you have to step into the hallway to practice getting on and off the subway, your arms linked so you don’t get “left behind.” when you both decide to take the charter bus to the airport, mark is the one who packs his suitcase early and heads to your apartment to help you stay awake and do last minute cleaning before he drives you both to the meeting point. you sleep on his shoulder the entire bus ride, in the seats at your gate, you even manage to have seats next to each other on your overnight flight and you fall asleep watching a movie together and sharing your blanket.
spring break is full of the two of you wandering rome together, sharing cups piled high with gelato at the piazza navona, and navigating the parisian subway from the city center to the catacombs. he takes pictures of you on his film camera in st. peter’s basilica; you sneak a selfie together with the ceiling of the sistine chapel, your faces cut off halfway. you climb the bell tower of the duomo in florence, laughing breathlessly when you make it to the top, and you walk the gardens of the palace of versailles together, shoulders brushing as you take in the scenery and chill air of a mid-march morning. on your final night, you watch the eiffel tower glitter from montparnasse and you swear mark looks like he wants to kiss you; you want him to.
but then the trip is over and you go back home. you share seats on the charter bus again and you fall asleep on his shoulder again. he takes you back to your apartment, walks you to your door all bleary eyed and sleepy. you’re worried that this is the last time you’ll see him as you stand at your window and watch him get into his car and drive off. looking at the picture a stranger took of you and mark on the ponte vecchio, his arm around your shoulders and his gaze fixed on you rather than the camera, you realize you cannot let this be the end.
Tumblr media
huang renjun is a missed connection. he’s the boy you see all over town, but never work up the courage to introduce yourself to. he’s tall and lanky, always dressed so nice and looking so out of place among everyone else. he’s got soft features, all gentle edges and round, sad eyes. you always find yourself wanting to wrap him up in your arms, fantasizing what his body slotted against yours would feel like. is he warm, soft as he looks?
you see him at your favorite cafe, keeping to himself while he studies and drinks his coffee and picks at his french toast crepe. you spot him on campus, backpack slung over his shoulder on his way to class or laying out on the greens and reading a book. some days, you’re lucky enough to catch the same subway car as him, earbuds in and his eyes trained on the horizon through the window. sometimes, you even end up in the same aisle as him at the convenience store down the street from your apartment. you stand opposite each other, considering your different choices of ramen.
still, with all your instances of seeing him, you’ve never scrounged together the courage you feel you need to talk to him for the first time. even if you could, one glimpse of that lopsided grin of his would have you crumbling anyways, a weakness before you even get the chance to ask for his name. so you resign yourself to only admire him from afar and he, completely unknown to him, will forever be known as the “cute cafe boy” amongst your friend group.
you spend months like that, cherishing the glimpses you get of him. because you often exist in the same spaces with the same schedule, like the cafe on tuesday afternoons at eleven in the morning, you decide to give the barista money one day, tell them that you want to pay for his coffee when he gets here, describe him as the tall, lanky boy with the big brown eyes and gentle voice; they always know who you’re talking about. you tell them to not tell him who paid for it, just that a stranger wanted to pay forward some kindness.
when he arrives and orders, the barista relays the message and they swear up and down the wall it was a stranger, but the glance they cast over his left shoulder is telling. when he turns away, his eyes land on you, too wrapped up in your laptop to notice. but he’s too shy to say anything and so when he gets home, he writes a missed connection posting on your community’s page, the same one your friend frequents to look for free or cheap furniture.
you were at the greenhouse cafe today (tuesday) around 11:15 in the morning. i went there to study and get coffee, but the barista said someone had paid for it already. you wanted to stay a stranger, but if you’re the person i think you are, i want to thank you properly. ramen at the convenience store by our apartment buildings?
maybe your friend oughta pass this on to you.
Tumblr media
lee jeno is a friend of a friend, who your friend manages to convince to fake date you for a couple of group outings. she drags you to so many big group events, like drinks at the favorite bar or clubbing or even group movie nights at apartments. out of a group of ten, you and jeno are the only two single ones. it can be annoying being the only singles, especially when you’ve made it perfectly clear that you don’t have an issue with not seeing anyone right now; it’ll happen when it happens, you find yourself saying at least once a week, it’s just not a priority right now and i don’t mind it.
jeno faces the same line of irritating questioning, so when you’re out with your friends beom gyu and haechan (the instigators of the group), haechan suggests a scheme to get the rest of your friends off your backs. “just pretend you’re dating for a little while. act a little coupley at our hangouts and then, like… just say that you decided your lives are going in different directions, so you’ve broken up, but it’s amicable and there’s no hard feelings! simple as that.”
beomgyu cosigns almost immediately, a mischievous glint in his eyes, and it kind of scares you. the number of times this duo has instigated things, harmless as they may be, is something to be worried about. you’re a little skeptical, but when you look over at jeno, he’s looking back at you. he gives you a nonchalant shrug and an easy it would get them off our backs for a while. it’s not like we have to actually go out on dates or anything.
it’d just be acting, sure, and you’ve never particularly been into jeno, but his last sentence stings a little, somewhere deep and dark within you. regardless, you ignore the subtle hurt and you nod, mimicking his shrug. sure, why not?
the next time the whole group is together, you and jeno sit together, shoulder to shoulder. almost immediately, yeji picks up on it and nearly squeals. what is this? are you dating? when jeno confirms, the whole table starts shouting, including beomgyu and haechan, the masterminds behind this whole thing (beomgyu tells you later that it was to make it look like they were surprised too). she asks when it happened, why, how, congratulates you both on your new relationship, says it’ll be great for you guys to not be ninth and tenth wheeling on hangouts anymore.
you both go on like this for a while, showing up to the bar or the club or your favorite local diner or even hangouts at someone’s apartment and sitting together, jeno’s arm draped around you or your head on his shoulder. you show up and leave hand in hand. every once in a while, he’ll even drop kisses to your temple or hairline to really seal the deal.
but your mind can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what’s fake, and the lines start to blur. you swear you’re starting to imagine things: fond glances from him, is he holding you just a little tighter or is that a figment of your imagination, why’s he lingering at your front door after dropping you off at home? there’s no chance that’s all for show, right?
Tumblr media
lee haechan is the neighbor of the family you’re working as an au pair for. you’re young and fresh out of college, but instead of going straight into a regular job, you decided to go abroad. you were lucky to find a great job as an au pair for a couple and their seven year old daughter; they offered room and board, a good salary, and weekends off (unless needed) in exchange for your services in taking care of their child and helping maintain the house. you confirmed almost immediately and left for their country within the week, nothing but two suitcases and a carry-on.
during your first week, you stuck mainly to your host family’s house, only really leaving to drop off or pick up the daughter from school. but when the weekend rolls around and the parents are off work, they tell you to do some exploring, giving you their personal recommendations for all kinds of stores, restaurants, and cafes. the mother ushers you goodnaturedly to the front door and tells you not to come back for at least two hours, to enjoy and get to know the area, especially if you’ll be around for as long as they need you.
so with a little bit of pocket money and your backpack, you’re left standing on the front lawn with no earthly idea where to go first. you’re just about to pull out your phone and look up the closest location they recommended when a call of hey! startles you. you nearly jump out of your skin and turn to look at the person who interrupted you. he’s decently tall and broad with honey bronze skin and a life-changing smile.
he waves you over and meet him at the edge of the front lawn, his eyes bright and airy, untouched by negativity. he introduces himself as haechan, the grandson of the woman who lives next door. he tells you that he’s going to university here in the city and lives with his grandma, which surprises you; it’s really not as bad as it could be, a twenty something year old living with his grandma, he tells you, i come home to a warm meal every night. but he shakes his head, getting himself back on track.
“anyways, my grandma mentioned something about the neighbors getting a nanny and i haven’t seen you around before, so that must be you, right?”
you nod, telling him you’re an au pair (fancy term, he interjects. cooler than nanny) from abroad and you’ve never visited this country before. he smiles, radiant and welcoming, and suggests that he give you a tour of all the best places, promising to make it worth your while. when you mention that the parents told you not to come back for at least a couple of hours, he nods dutifully and says, “i’m the best tour guide you could possibly had. we’ll be gone for four hours minimum.”
it makes you laugh, the look on his face, and infected by his sunny personality, you shrug, giving him a why not? you could do with a local guide.
“lead the way.”
Tumblr media
na jaemin is the frat boy whose friends dare him to date you. he sees you often at the parties his frat throws, always in tow with your more outgoing, popular friends. he’s not entirely sure how you become a hot topic among his friend group (he thinks it’s because you’re so different from the rest of your group), but you do. on nights they get drunk, they often end up discussing you, how you ended up in that gang of friends when you so clearly do not fit in with them; even when you do look like you’re enjoying yourself at a party, you never quite get to the level your friends do.
one night, the discussion turns to a rumor that they heard going around about you: you’ve never had a boyfriend. his friends laugh about it, busting their sides over something so insignificant and so not their business. jaemin doesn’t find any amusement in it; if anything, he thinks it’s kind of cute, if it’s even true. the boys take notice of his silence and when seungmin casts a scheming glance around the table, jaemin feels a chill run through him.
“jaemin,” the younger boy drawls. “dare ya to date ‘em.”
jaemin immediately shakes his head. “the fuck’s wrong with you? that’s fucked up. i’m not doing that for a stupid ass dare.”
seungmin shrugs and leans back in his seat, head tilted back as he takes a drink out of his natty light. a laugh ripples across the group of boys and jaemin has to hold himself back from rolling his eyes; he’s not cruel and he’s not doing that to you, not when you’ve been nothing but sweet to him in the few conversations you’ve had. but then jeongin, the worst culprit of provoking everyone and instigating shit, says it’s because jaemin is too goody-too-shoes, too lame to do something and against his better judgment, jaemin jumps in, heat creeping under his skin, scorching him from the inside out.
“fine, i’ll do it, but i’m expecting compensation for any date,” he says hotly. “you’re paying for it all since it was your stupid ass idea.”
the group almost protests, but jaemin silences them with a deadly look. he reminds them a second time that they’re the ones who came up with the idea, he’s not paying for this out of his own pocket (at least not yet).
when he waltzes up to you at the next party, a seagram’s escape from his own personal stash in his hand for you, you’re immediately suspicious. but his smile is soft, his gaze impossibly softer, the whole of it disarming. he chats you up easily and by the end of the night, your number is secure in his phone, your text log pinned to the top of his messages, and a potential plan to go get breakfast at a hole-in-the-wall diner next week. he smiles when you turn back and wave to him as you’re leaving.
this whole thing is supposed to be a bet, but he’s always wanted to get to know you better, so if he can get his stupid ass friends to bankroll all the dates he plans to take you on, he figures it’ll be killing two birds with one stone.
Tumblr media
zhong chenle is the boy your friend has a crush on. he’s in your general psychology class; he sits a couple of rows behind you in the lecture hall, always has the best discussion board posts, always sets the high score for every test, quiz, and assignment. he’s also involved in the choir on campus and he lives in the same dorm building that you and your friend do.
you see him on campus in passing all the time, frequenting the dining hall and the library on the same schedules. your friend, iseul, is almost always with you during these instances too and she starts crushing… hard. you can’t say you blame her: he’s pretty and intelligent and kind of mysterious. you’ve heard whispers of him being the campus crush, which doesn’t surprise you in the slightest.
one friday night, a little bit gone off a blue razzberry beatbox, iseul pleads to you on your dorm room floor, kneeled on the hard linoleum floor and hands pressed together, the whole nine yards. she wants you to help her get with chenle, she really likes him but because she doesn’t have a way of meeting him naturally, you’re her next best bet. she makes you a million promises: she’ll do your laundry for a month, she’ll buy the groceries for the room, she’ll buy your coffee at the campus cafe for the next year, whatever it takes.
she’s near tears when you finally cave in and help her; she hasn’t spoken a single word to that boy, but she’s already so whipped and you’re not sure if you’re ready to hear her whine if you say no. she’s very lucky that you have a group project for your gen psych class and chenle is in your cohort. you don’t have a single clue about how you’re going to play cupid for her, but you suppose you’ll figure it out as you go.
when you, chenle, and the other two members of your group meet for the first time, you’re ready to help iseul bag the man of her dreams. but the more your group meets, the more time you spend sitting next to chenle, his body heat tangible and his cologne invading your senses, the more you exchange ideas and small talk, the more you realize that you like him quite a bit, more than you should.
and then you start hanging out with him outside of the project too, getting coffee or sharing a table at the library or eating dinner on the nights that iseul doesn’t join you for a meal. he laughs at your jokes, asks questions, talks to you about things other than academics. the more you spend your time with him, the harder it gets to want to matchmake him with iseul.
but you made her a promise and you’d be a bad friend to break that promise.
Tumblr media
park jisung is your first love, even if he doesn’t know it. he’s a million of your favorite romance tropes rolled into one: childhood best friend, boy next door, campus crush. everything about him is so sweet and kind and cute, it’s next to impossible to not fall in love with him, not when he has everything in the world going for him.
you grow up together, your moms best friends since high school, so you’ve been raised as best friends since birth. you’ve had joint birthdays, matching gifts, a shared cake, all of it. all of your big duo achievements have been celebrated together and you’ve been each other’s dates to every high school dance, including your senior prom. it’s just always been you and jisung, always intertwined, forever written in the stars.
you both decide to go to the same college, manage to get assigned to the same dorm building and into the same gen ed classes because neither of you can imagine going through university without the other. it’s not that you’re codependent (at least not unhealthily so), but he’s your self-proclaimed life partner. you don’t have to follow the same path, just ones that are parallel to each other.
but when you start university, he quickly becomes the heartthrob of your dormitory and then the entire campus. jisung, as he always has been, is oblivious to the extra attention he gets from your classmates, the glances they shoot him in the dining hall, their less than innocent invitations to hang out in their dorm rooms. despite your decades-long friendship, you’ve never really talked about crushes or love or anything of the sort and he’s never given any indication that he likes you romantically, so there’s no reason for you to feel that sharp, ugly pang of jealousy in your gut when another classmate leans a little too close towards him to ask a question while you’re standing in line at the dining hall, waiting to swipe your meal cards.
but you do. it is sharp and painful and terrifying the way you feel so viscerally upset when your peers, girls and guys alike, try to make passes at jisung. you always knew you felt differently about your childhood friend, the one you’ve known since literal diapers, but not to this extent. and you realize one night while you’re drinking contraband alcohol in your dorm room that your feelings stem from a place in your heart you can trace all the way back to eighth grade when he asked you to be his date to the valentine’s day dance when the person you asked rejected you very publicly.
park jisung is not yours, not officially, but your heart has belonged to him for years and you’re too deep in to take it back. maybe if he was just a little less oblivious or you a little less anxious to put your friendship on the line for it.

Architectural Finds, 06/24/2023
My walk today was a brief 20 minutes, I was meeting up with a friend from upstate for some chai who had come down the night before to stay with some other friends. We met up at the Chai Spot on Mott St. (which I definitely now recommend) and we relaxed in their backroom lounge with our chai's for 45 min or so. She eventually had to leave to catch her bus back upstate & I walked her to the subway stairs hugged her and said goodbye. Feeling the warm weather on my skin and the caffeine in my veins I decided to walk up Broadway, here were some of the architectural highlights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This cute turret room on the top of the building on the NE corner of Bleecker & Broadway. Doing the smallest ammount of googling I am finding out this was Peter Venkman's (Bill Murray) apartment in Ghostbusters 2???? ok.
It just looks like it would be such a whimsical little tower to hang your hair from, idk.
Building Facts: Built in 1891 as the Manhattan Savings Institution, also known as Bleecker Tower. Architect Stephen Decatur Hatch.
Built in the Romanesque Revival style with arches and ornaments, as well as the red sandstone and signature rough cut stone of this style on the base of the building (definitely why it caught my eye, I love Richardson Romanesque/romanesque revival).
The tower on top eludes my brief internet search, but if anyone has pictures of the inside please direct them to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up we have this lil copper cutie who looks like it just got a face lift judging by the shiny copper facade on top. It is currently a FootLocker so hopefully they're treating her nice.
Building Facts: (obv) Built in 1889 by Architect Alfred Zucker.
The menacing gargoyles are cute.
(maybe more of an opinion than a fact, but) there used to be a bookstore called Shakepeare's on the bottom floor and the top floors were 1-per-floor studio spaces for artists to live/work in, & I wish that was the case today, not footlocker and high rent.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
MOVING ON, we've got this pair of cuties. Don't they look like the best of friends holding hands ready to face the world side by side? These guys are 734 (left) and 732 (right) Broadway.
734: Built in 1872 by Architects David & John Jardine in Cast-Iron Neo-Grec style. Until ~2015, the facade had become a rusted brown/black mess until they cleaned and repainted it.
732: Built in 1854 by unknown.
This little building has a complicated past but ill try and summarize the small dig I just did on it. Originally it was a 3.5 peaked-roof building as a set of 3 houses for wealthy sisters (daughters of John Mason) from 732-736 designed by an undocumented architect. It underwent large renovations twice in its life, and one small renovation adding the Treffurth's sign on the roof cornice. The first renovation happened in 1885 by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh (god write a romance novel already would you) and allowed the introduction of E. A. Mac's bookstore to take the place of the earlier saloon on the bottom floor. It was then renovated in 1900 by Bruno W. Berger to the Cast-Iron more or less Renaissance Revival facade we see today.
-
Im going to keep these next ones brief because I'm beginning to lose steam :)
Tumblr media
1 Astor Place
Built in 1883 by Architects Starkweather & Gibbs (they also designed the Potter Building). Brick & Terracotta above Cast-Iron ground floor facade.
Originally it was used as a hotel and boarding house with ground floor stores. The harsh vertical motifs on the exterior caught my eye, and I was drawn in even more by the harmony of the design elements and color choices.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10 Astor Place aka 444 Lafayette St
Built in 1876 by Architect Griffith Thomas to the same owner as the above building, Orlando B. Potter, who seemed to have impeccable taste in architecture.
I love the ornate implementation of the painted white Cast-Iron in the arches and pillar ornaments on this one. As well as the eye-popping contrast of the white paint on dark red brick, kind of a juxtaposed take on themes seen in the building above with the way the red and black elements seem to blend in together in harmony.
Tumblr media
21 Astor Place aka Clinton Hall
Built in 1891 by George E. Harney.
Originally a Library for the New York Mercantile Library. I love the classic industrial look its such a strong look while they still tried to give elements of the facade some artistic nuance like in the arched windows and dark banding.
Tumblr media
Only Caught the side of this Collonade building but doing more research on it, it's owned by the Blue Man Group????
Built 1831 by Seth Greer and historically home to family member's of the Astor & Vanderbilt families, it is the oldest building I took note of today.
Tumblr media
And of course, how could I not be drawn into the Cooper Union Foundation building's charm. It stands seemingly so alone in the heart of Manhattan, close to a modern miracle.
Built in 1859 by Frederick A. Peterson in the (what I'm finding now to be called) Rundbogenstil German neo-Romanesque style.
I didn't realize it at the time but this picture also seems to be the back of the building. Still just such ornate and well-balanced design!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
HONORABLE MENTIONS: This house on top of this building and the cute lil mansard moment next to it, which I searched and searched for but I cant seem to remember where it is.
Edit: I found it, there were street signs in the picture whoops. The one with the cottage is 203 E 13th Street also known as Pear Tree Place. And the little guy with the mansard roof is 109 3rd ave, both of them resting above Kiehls 3rd ave.
Tumblr media
DISHONORABLE MENTIONS: This NYU Alumni building. Who designed you, they should be ashamed. What is going on with your offset, unbalanced terraces in the back? Awful. What was the point of all of these different colored brick patches?? Uncomfortable, awful. It looks like a neutral-toned Duplo set.
Built in 1986 and I cant even find the architect so you know they weren't very proud of it.

In the Darkness
In the Darkness
Loki X Reader
Warnings: depression, suicidal idealization, self harm. Happy ending.
bit of a drabble about 1k
Tumblr media
It was morning. Dreadful, fucking accursed daylight, seeping in sharp lines through the slats of the blinds. Your throat was dry, but you didn’t move from the bed or even turn your head to see if there was any water to drink on the nightstand.
Your phone sat next you on the bed, but you didn’t dare touch it. Not after all night awake, scrolling between different apps, begging to be numb just enough to fall asleep. It didn’t happen though. Your eyes remained puffy and swollen from the silent tears that kept falling. You wanted to scream, but that too felt like too much work. The ache in your chest, the tightness in your head, the unbearable weight of having a body, exhausting you from the top of your head through your marrow down to your toes.
Your phone beeped. You didn’t know if it honestly was a message notice, spam email or low battery, and it took too much to check. Quickly you had ruled out any possibility that it was a message. No one cared about you, you had no one. They all had full lives without you. Full lives. What did you have?
After a while trying to will your body out of existence, you must have fallen asleep, exhaustion taking over. It was dark and quiet there. I bet this is what death is like you mused. It doesn’t hurt here. It felt calm there. Warm
But rather unfortunately, your stupid meat suit woke you up, this time to use the bathroom, and rather reluctantly you dragged yourself into the interior room, refusing to turn on any lights. You noticed the nail scissors left on the counter. They looked nice and sharp.
Immediately weary from standing up, you managed to crawl back under the blanket on the bed, while smashing your face into a pillow. You were sure to get fired. Good let them. You didn’t have enough words to call your supervisor anyway. You started to wonder who was right about the after life. Was there a heaven, pearly gates and St. Peter? Reincarnation as a pampered house cat? A subway rat stealing slices of pizza? Or was there a special circle of hell, where you’d be forced to have to live this life over and over again. Alone. Forgotten, worthless.
Your stomach let loose a noise. With a reluctant huff you pulled yourself to the kitchen, what was there, seemed too hard. Nothing good. You popped in the last slice of bread into the toaster, pulling the last clean knife from the drawer, not exactly a butter knife, but a sharper paring knife, well enough to spread the butter on the toast. You mindlessly ran your finger over the blade’s edge, eyes unfocusing, as you stood numbly next to the counter. The toast popped up, startling you, and you cut your finger. Didn’t notice until you saw the drop of blood on the counter, and wondered if you’d feel a bigger cut either.
You ate the toast in a few bites between the kitchen and your bedroom, This allowed you to fall back asleep, wrapped up in your blankets. You didn’t hear the notifications on your phone. It wouldn’t have mattered if you did. They couldn’t be real messages for you, but people you once knew bragging how amazing their lives were. Nights out, engagements, weddings, pregnancy announcements, cute photos of their dogs, their cats, their plants. The last things you were capable of, you no more than a speck of dust.
The next time you woke up, it was dark outside. The sensation in your chest breaking you. Maybe you’d be lucky and that this was what a heart attack felt like, that soon you’d find an answer about the afterlife.
After some time, when it became apparent that you were in fact not dying from a heart attack you found yourself in the bathroom yet again, The sharp, pointy end of nail scissors looking so beautiful in the lack of light.
You didn’t think of anything, you didn’t feel anything, but you touched those scissors just the same. All the blood rushing into your ears, you didn’t hear the door to your apartment open, or the dulcet voice call our your name in a worrying panic. You had already dug the first cut into your arm, the feeling of calm flowing into you just as your blood seeped out.
Just as you were about to make another on the opposite arm (deeper now), the space was flooded with light from the hallway light. You heard your name, called this time, like it was far away, like a memory.
Loki barely had a moment to survey the scene before him, as you truly registered him being there, a fresh new deep sob left your throat. He saw the blood running down your arm and hand, the fresh tears, bringing his own and a lump in his throat.
“Darling.” he whispered, gingerly touching your wound, and taking the scissors from your hand. “Love.” and you closed your eyes, unable to witness Loki seeing you like this. You felt the warmth of his magic wash over your body, lingering where the injury lay.
“My dearest pet. Please…” his voice cracked. “Please.” And that was all he needed to say. It all came out in heaving massive sobs. Your body shook, and he held you, curled on the bathroom floor. Loki stroked your hair, softly, gently, lightly rocking you. You cried until you had nothing left, and then you cried still, gasping for air still in your lungs.
“Breathe with me, bitr elskask.” (old norse for brave love)
Slowly you did. As you did Loki peppered you with kisses, soft light and gentle. On your forehead, hair, cheeks, and even your shoulder.
“why are you here?” you managed to say eventually amid a hiccup.
“I felt a need to be here more than to complete any mission. Seems I was right.”
“but you were offworld.” you whispered.
“Do you think something like that would stop me?”
You just held on even more fiercely.
“but, not me. Im not worth it. Let me go.”
“Never. You’re mine.” Fresh tears fell, as you felt the solid mass of god in your arms. “I love you more than I have words.”
You struggled to mumble out a counter argument.
“Move in with me and I’ll show you every moment how much.” and he kissed you deeply. “Please:”
You nodded your yes.

Bishop Joseph Perry: Men's Spirituality
Note: This post is from the CMCS Blog archives: Mass Homily of Most Reverend Joseph N. Perry for the CMCS Bishop Perry Catholic Men’s Conference Chicago on April 2, 2016.  St. Ailbe Church, Chicago, Illinois.

The prophet Isaiah said it first in the days of the Old Testament, before St. Peter ever did in the New Testament.
“Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!”
The prophet Isaiah’s religious experience was also a theophany, in which the prophet perceives God on his heavenly throne. God’s majesty and transcendence overwhelm the prophet. He had a vision of a high throne and the hem of a garment that fills the Temple that evoked God’s universal kingship and splendor.
In this vision the seraphim archangels minister to God, praising God’s holiness and the glory that fills the earth. The seraphim angels also prepare the prophet for his mission. In response to Isaiah’s claims that he himself is unworthy, in his words, “a man of unclean lips living amidst a people of unclean lips,” a seraph places a burning coal on Isaiah’s lips, thus purifying him. Isaiah is now prepared to carry God’s message to the people since, as the passage says, his “guilt has been taken away” and his “sin is blotted out.”
Isaiah’s vocational call contrasts the majesty of God, holy, glorious and mighty with the human ordinariness of Isaiah who must be prepared to bear God’s message. Angels purify Isaiah so that he can prophecy for God.
Most of us do not experience visions and theophanies that overwhelm us with God’s might and transcendence. Most of us experience God in the mundane experiences of daily life, in the ordinary reality of conversing with our wives, engaging our children, of going to our places of employment, hanging out with friends, in the ups and downs of family life, walking the dog, seeing a movie, riding the subway or participating in a family reunion.
The ordinary work and leisure of everyday life are where God tends to reach out to meet us. God comes to us where we are, as we are.
Jesus met his first disciples at their places of work. When Simon, Andrew, James and John first meet Jesus in the gospels they were not overwhelmed by a vision but were fixed on their work. In fact, Jesus interrupted their work and the men may have found that a bit annoying. They were not expecting angels let alone a theophany; they were washing and mending their nets after a fruitless night of fishing.
Jesus, however, began to preach from Simon Peter’s boat using it as a pulpit for the day, a powerful image I dare say for God’s presence in the ordinariness of human life. Not in the Temple or a synagogue, where Jesus could also be found but in the boat of a few working men is where the encounter with the incarnate God took place.
After Jesus finished speaking to the crowd He turned to the work at hand, the work of fishing for a living. Indeed, a lot of fish had to be caught because Roman taxes laid against the fishing trade were heavy. And Simon Peter worried about this constantly – being able to pay his taxes.
Jesus teases Simon to “put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon was reluctant to start the process again, especially when they had caught nothing the night before. But when he did put the nets back into the water the catch of fish was almost immediate; the nets straining with the bounty. There were so many fish that the nets began to break. They called for help to their companions, James and John. The boats were beginning to sink because of the weight of the catch.
It is in response to the sudden and overwhelming catch of fish that Simon Peter is suddenly overtaken by his sense of the presence of God in his fishing boat in the seemingly ordinary person of Jesus. Like Isaiah in God’s Temple, Simon’s sense of unworthiness in the presence of God overwhelms him. He trembles as “He fell down to his knees before Jesus, saying, ‘Go away from me Lord, for I am a sinful man!’” As if to say, ‘I am not worthy of what you have provided for me this day!’
A profound recognition of God incarnate took place not while Jesus was transfigured or enthroned in majesty but in the casting and drawing up of their fishing nets. In response to the miraculous catch, Simon recognizes God with him. For Peter and the other fishermen, the encounter was a call to a new adventure. “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will be catching men!” And the gospel tells us, they left their jobs and everything and committed their lives to Him!
God met Peter and God meets us where we are. Like Isaiah Peter initially felt unworthy, unready and unprepared for the encounter and for his new work but God sees us and wants us for who we are and where we are. God will purify us, prepare us for our tasks and make us ready to do our work, however ordinary or exalted this work might be that we’re doing. But our ordinariness will always be a part of who we are, not a place absent from God but where God meets us every day.
II
It’s a matter of finding God in the ordinariness of your life. It’s a matter of letting Christ enter the boat of your life and allowing Him to do some wonderful things for you despite how worthy or unworthy you deem yourself.It’s a matter of keeping focus gentleman, taking the lead over yourself with your life and leading your family if you are a family man. These are not easy times to be a religiously focused man. Some people snicker and make jokes of religion and piety. Some are skeptical about God and his church. Some are put off by the observation that religion doesn’t make you rich in material things. Some believe they can get along in life quite well without this religion thing.
People make the decision easily to attend a football or soccer game rather than attend Sunday Mass. People do this and sleep comfortably the same night thinking they can get up the next morning by their own strength. The sweep of the popular culture out there to live life with little or no reference to God or the Church is immensely attractive. It is an undertow that carries men and their families away from the grace of the Gospel and the sacraments.
Are you interested in saving your wife and your family? Are you interested in your own salvation?
I know a man who insists that every Sunday evening his family sits down and has dinner together. Nothing, absolutely nothing can interfere with that family-time. The teenagers in the family are welcome to bring a friend to dinner, but everything else must give way to the family being together at table for once in the course of a week. The chaotic schedules that bear down upon each of the family members makes coming together next to impossible on other days of the week. But this husband and father considers the Sabbath sacred for his family and underscores each one’s participation.
This same family man, once dinner is finished, leaves the dishes to the teenagers and takes his wife for a half-hour walk outside, just the two of them, to talk and share among themselves.
III
Most of us benefit from a “Plan of Life” that helps us live as a Christian man carrying forth what it is that God has ordained us to do. Living life haphazardly, bouncing from one thing to the next, one chore to the next, whatever-happens-happens kind of approach, from one surprise to the next, from one tragedy to the next, is not a careful way to live as a Christian. A Christian man takes each and every item of his life and analyzes it prayerfully in order to discover what God means for him and where God is leading him.
Our religion is a preoccupation that permeates everything we are and do, that infuses the thoughts we think, the choices we make, the sufferings we suffer and the joys we take delight in. The message of the Lord found in the gospels is the very constitution of our lives.
Therefore, it asks for certain steps taken on our part by way of a structured religious life, to make sure that we are responding to the Lord when he tells us to put out into the deep, to make sure that we have the spiritual armor to combat the onslaughts of despair and temptation and secularism that pushes God away from our lives, to make sure that we, like Peter, can fall to our knees and recognize God’s powerful presence in our homes and families. As Joshua, Moses’ deputy, is quoted as saying in the Old Testament:
“If it does not please you to serve the Lord, decide today whom you will serve…  as for me and my house, we shall serve the Lord!”
In a Catholic man’s plan of life, it helps to include:
Some regular prayer with your wife and in the home together – this can be done with use of a prayer book, or the rosary or spontaneous prayerful words from you or your wife.
Making sure Sunday Mass is a non-negotiable with your wife and your children – before sports or other things that amount to entertaining yourselves. We must entertain God first.
Making sure there are Catholic symbols in the home: a crucifix at a minimum, some statue or sacred picture or art that reminds you and visitors to your home what in your life is important. When I visit homes the first thing I look for is some sign or signs of people’s faith. Some people have no visible indications in their households of what they believe in. Reading solid Catholic literature is important in order to keep abreast of news and issues in our church – this can be done through requisite magazines by Catholic publishers or through Catholic outlets’ journalism through the internet. We can always make recommendations about wholesome Catholic literature when asked. There is a variety of Catholic reading material, from the average to the scholarly.
How about an occasional attendance at weekday mass or ten minutes in Eucharistic adoration at a parish chapel nearby?
How about family time marked off in the course of the week where you and your wife and children can spend time together and punctuate the beauty of what God has given you? If you don’t take charge of your family, some thing or someone else will.
Start out small with a plan – something to keep the graces showering upon yourselves. Don’t be afraid men to get on your knees before God and thank Him for the privileges of faith and insight. Don’t be afraid to shepherd your family in the ways of the Lord. Don’t be afraid to put out into the deep and lower your nets, for a catch.
It is not sufficient to merely utter that we are sinful men and rest there. Too many of us relish in the notion that we are sinful men. The Lord would like our friendship, our worship, our conversion of life and our loyalty to Him.

Hong Kong Adventures
4 days 2011
Day 1July 24 Hong Kong airport
Tumblr media
I checked in to the Stanford Hotel situated beside Ladies' Market, located in Kowloon in one of the most colourful and vibrant areas of this lively, cosmopolitan city. Stanford Hotel Hong Kong is well served by public transport. It is just a few minutes' walk to the MTR Station as well as the Mong Kok East MTR Station, which connects to Mainland China. The Hotel offered complimentary scheduled shuttle bus service to Hung Hom MTR Station, Airport Express Kowloon Station, China Hong Kong City Ferry Terminal and Stanford Hillview Hotel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I decided to take a stroll around the area to checkout my surroundings. I wondered into Kowloon park where I viewed many sculptors.
Tumblr media
Right around the block from my hotel was the Ladies Market. This massive Mongkok street market is one of the best spots in the city to pick up a bargain. Find T-shirts, cheongsams, silk pyjamas, chopsticks, handbags, belts, hair accessories, toys, and more.
Tumblr media
I found many malls around the area. Def amazing to see international brands in another country. Dinner at the mall!
Tumblr media
DAY 2 Shek O Beach and Mainland Hong Kong
I found Breakfast 2 blocks from my hotel and made this my daily breakfast on the go spot!
Tumblr media
Hong Kong is very tourist friendly, I was on a mission to find a rock formation that I found in a tourist book. It didn’t have an address or directions on how to get there but I was confident that I would locate this place. The only piece of information I had was the name, Shek O VillageRoad.
To my amazement everyone spoke English. A mother and daughter let me know that they were required to take English I’m school. They directed me to the correct train station.
Tumblr media
When I arrived at the station the train workers helped me to figure out the train number to board.
Tumblr media
When I got to my destination the bus driver pointed to a path. He said to walk up the path and I would find it. To my amazement I had found a beach! It was hotter than the mainland, I had wish I brought my bathing suit.
Tumblr media
Shek O Beach is probably one of the most scenic and popular beaches on Hong Kong Island. It might be on the southeast end of the island, but it’s still relatively easy to access and is often the first beach that anyone new to Hong Kong visits (well at least I did). It’s literally a glimpse into the other side of Hong Kong, the side without skyscrapers.
Tumblr media
I then viewed the house I saw in the Tourist Guide book, I had reached my destination!
Tumblr media
I continued down the path to see if I could find the rock formation that was pictured in the guide book but to my surprised it was more than that rock image! Definitely was not prepared to see what I was about to see and I was so glad I ventured out to find it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I took the bus and rail back to the mainland. Next stop The Peak Tram is a funicular railway in Hong Kong, which carries both tourists and residents to the upper levels of Hong Kong Island. The journey takes approximately 8–10 minutes and is a visual experience to remember, as skyscrapers glide past at what appear to be impossible angles while the tram makes its ascent. The Peak Tram passes six stations in order: Garden Road, Kennedy Road, MacDonnell Road, May Road, Barker Road, and the Peak. The lower terminus is at Garden Road in the Central, while the upper one is on the third floor of the Peak Tower on the hillside.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before I head back down I had lunch at the bubba shrimp co Reaturant & Bar. With many days eating just Asian food I was happy to have a salad. When I got back down I walked over to visit St. Peter’s Cathedral the oldest Catholic Church in Hong Kong. The headed over to the Center.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Stopped at the Madrain Hotel turn off to dinner at Yung Kee (Chinese: 鏞記) is a Chinese restaurant located on Wellington Street in Central, Hong Kong. It is most famous for its roast goose.
Tumblr media
Day 3 New Territories, Tap Mun & Big Buddah
Subway MTR to The ferry pier which was located at Science Park and University in between Shatin and Tai Po. Ma Liu Shui is an area in Sha Tin District, in the New Territories, Hong Kong.
www.traway.com.hk
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grass Island or Tap Mun is an island in Hong Kong, located in the northeastern part of the territory.
We found a 400-year-old temple with an altar, and legend has it that it is connected by a hidden tunnel to Tap Mun Cave on the opposite shore of the island but we didn’t see one.
We found a hiking trail with stairs, when we got to the top we were able to take in the views! On the way down we encountered a cow. As we were walking pass it, it ran ran after us. What a scary moment, but we were able to laugh about it later!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tian Tan Buddha (Big Buddah)
Ngong Ping Lantau Island, in Hong Kong
Set on Lantau Island, the most enjoyable way to reach the Big Buddha is via the Ngong Ping Cable Car from Tung Chung MTR station.
You are also about to take a 2.5 to 3.5 hours hike and the cable car back to the station or catch a bus for the return trip. We decided to take the Cable Car round trip, which was a 30 min ride.
Tumblr media
It is totally free to visit the Big Buddha, however, we would recommend making a small contribution to their donation box as a kind gesture, as the Big Buddha Phuket was built entirely from donations.
The Big Buddha, also known as Tian Tan Buddha, is famed as the most iconic attraction of Lantau. Sitting next to the Po Lin Monastery, it is only a 10-minute walk away from Ngong Ping Village. The majestic outdoor bronze Buddha statue sits solemnly atop the peak of Mount Muk Yue.
We climb up 268 steps to reach the three-storey pedestal to visit the Buddha and enjoy the boundless views of Lantau and South China Sea.
Tumblr media
Day 4 Victoria Harbour Mainland HK & Stanley Beach
Victoria Harbour is a natural channel separating Hong Kong Island in the south from the Kowloon Peninsula to the north. With a glorious location in the South China Sea, the harbor is one of Hong Kong’s top tourist attractions thanks to its historical significance (it was one of the British Empire’s biggest military and trading ports) and the fact it offers gorgeous views of the Hong Kong skyline.
A prime way of experiencing Victoria Harbor’s allure is by riding the award-winning Hong Kong Star Ferry, which carries passengers between Tsim Sha Tsui on the Kowloon side and Central and Wan Chai on Hong Kong island. The 20-min journey will provide you with the most spectacular views of Hong Kong,
You can also take in the beauty of Victoria Harbor from the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade. This alluring promenade starts at the Star Ferry Terminal, where the historic Star Ferry departs from, linking Tsim Sha Tsui with Central Hong Kong. The ride is considered one of the top things to do in Hong Kong, as it offers the most dramatic views of the city.
We passed by the Floating Restaurant, Tai Pak Sea food. In June 2022, the city's iconic tourist attraction, Jumbo Floating Restaurant, left Hong Kong waters and capsized at sea while on its way to Cambodia for storage – a shocking news.
Tumblr media
Stanley Village & Beach
MTR Central Station Exit A / MTR Hong Kong Station Exit B1 to Stanley Village Bus Terminus Stanley has been a fishing village since before the British came to Hong Kong.
Stanley is a village in Hong Kong Island’s Southern District, where many of Hong Kong’s top beaches can be found. Visitors to Stanley will find a well developed beachfront before them, with a gorgeous promenade and a host of western-style bars and restaurants lining the waterfront. The village also has two beaches: Stanley Main Beach and St. Stephen’s beach.
Tumblr media
Next stop: Ritz Carlton, Kowloon
Occupying floors 102 to 118 of the International Commerce Centre in Kowloon, The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong, is the highest hotel in the world.With spectacular views of Hong Kong skyline; looking out to the Hong Kong city, harbour or Victoria Harbour view at 490 metres above sea level.
Tumblr media
LAN Kwai Fong LFK
Lan Kwai Fong is one of Hong Kong's most popular nightlife hot spots and home to over 90 restaurants and bars. The atmosphere ranges from stylish wine pairings to raucous jelly shots and the food on offer is as diverse as the clientele.
Tumblr media
Day 5 finally tried the sushi and took my hotek shuttle to the airport!

Tuesday, Aug. 2 - Today we checked something off my bucketlist. Seeing the Glockenspiel. It went a tad different than I thought though. First we came off the subway and there was a man and an emu just wondering around the Marienplatz which is the place you see when you see pictures of Munich. The kids thought it was hilarious and we watched them interact for a long time. Then about 5 minutes before the Glockenspiel began to play there was a parade that came through. The only thing we can figure out is that it was a parade for bringing flowers to the St. Peter’s church for harvest?? We have no idea but we could see them doing that. There were multiple bands, people waving and the floats all had fruits vegetables and flowers. It was hard to figure out if we should watch the parade or the Glockenspiel. Everyone else there for the Glockenspiel was also confused as to what to watch. 😂. We then made the 2 1/2 hour train ride back to Kayla’s. The next three days are all in the 90s here. Neil is going to work. I am going to work. Kids are going to veg out after some long days of walking and sight seeing. We are going to head back to Munich on Sunday. We are going to try to take the 1 1/2 hour train ride to Salzburg Austria on Monday (if weather cooperates). Our time is quickly coming to an end. Until then we will eat all the $0.29 pretzels, all the candy, and wonder the beautiful streets.

Hi librarian, I hope you're doing well. I'm super grateful for your blog and your recs always get me through whatever I've got going on. I was wondering if you have a list for meet-ugly fics, they're my favorites
Hello friend! Your sweet asks always make this Librarian smile, and hopefully this list of fics will return the favor. There are…a lot of fics in this category so there are even more fics below the cut. Happy reading!
💞 Wolfstar Meet Uglies 😅
St-rain-gly Familiar by Judeyjude
prompt: Remus is having a terrible day. To top it all off, when he gets caught in a sudden downpour his umbrella refuses to open. Luckily for Remus, a black haired stranger comes to his rescue. The rescuing doesn't go quite as planned...
Smoke Signals by @kattlupin
Sirius Black, the reluctant God of Black Island, has his world turned upside down. Not by the smoldering volcano that has come back to life and is threatening to blow its top and destroy them all at any moment, but by the islands mysterious, surfing, pot smoking inhabitant, Remus Lupin.
The "Sweetest, Kindest Person" by @kittycargo
Lily's friend Remus comes to the dental office where Sirius works to have his wisdom teeth removed.
Strangers on a Plane by @halictus-writer
Sirius is planning on reading during his short flight. But his seatmate is rather handsome, if not a little standoffish. They're both short on tact today.
Operation Puppy Love by @goodboylupin
After a long string of failures, Sirius must take on the mantle of Man's Best Friend to help James win over one Lily Evans. As a treat for his good deeds, he meets the man of his dreams.
The Social Penetration Theory by @catewip
When Remus Lupin gets distracted by his insanely attractive new classmate, technology rebels and chaos ensues.
Fine Motor Skills by @my-coming-of-age-novel
Sirius Black's car needs work—again. Meanwhile, Remus Lupin is amused to see his favorite customer back at his mechanic's shop. An ode to classic "tattoo artist meets florist" fics, this "mechanic meets bookstore owner" one subverts the trope so the exact opposite marauder that you would expect to own each shop does.
To Fall for/on the Northern Line by @ptarmiganlettercarrier
What happens when the only other guy on the train trips over you? Well... if you're Sirius Black, maybe you start to flirt. And maybe, just maybe, he flirts back.
Tom Jones (A Love Story) by @wook77
The story in which Remus is a street musician, Sirius is a self-important banker that spends more on his coat than Remus makes in a month, James is James and Peter likes Tom Jones.
Hogwarts Bouncy Castle of Love by Children_of_the_Shadows
To many, Sirius in a bouncy castle may spell disaster, but to Remus it is where he has found true love.
Swipe Left for Safety by @remywrites5
His finger hesitated over a picture of someone who absolutely couldn’t be real. He had long, dark hair that fell well past his shoulders and grey eyes that Remus thought must have been either contact lenses or photoshopped. High cheekbones and sinful lips the man looked like a model. Remus was not about to get catfished by a picture that was probably of someone famous that he just didn’t recognize. Besides, what kind of a name was Sirius anyway? It was obviously fake. He swiped left. Not today, Satan. “Hard pass on that guy, huh?” Someone said from above Remus. “Ouch.”
Huckleberry by @wolfywordweaver
One dusty morning in a small town in the middle of the Wild West a gunfight brings the best gunslinger of the Greyback Boys face-to-face with the legendary Black Grim. Who's got the fastest hands in the West?
Chance Meetings, Therapeutically by @halictus-writer
Sirius is getting himself through post-divorce life when he re-meets the husband of the man his husband was cheating on him with.
Be Nice to the Wait Staff by wannnabesuper
Inspired by the instagram @overheardbumble: "I ended the date early because he was rude to the waiter." "Ugh, I hate that." "I know...But I ended up going home with the waiter, so it was worth it."
Headband by diiiangelo
When Remus finally agreed to go watch a soccer game with Lily, he didn’t know that the most gorgeous man he had ever seen would be playing. He also definitely didn’t count on said man kicking the ball right at his head.
Something Beautiful -orphaned account
When Remus Lupin's ex talks him into a drunken tattoo mistake, he goes to his friend and co-worker Lily for help. Luckily her husband's best mate is a tattoo artist who can help with the cover up. Unfortunately for Remus, the tattoo in in a rather compromising area, and he'll have to get over his embarrassment. Luckily for him, Sirius Black is just the man for the job.
Customers Only by Judeyjude
"Dragging her eyes back to Sirius, the hostess pointed a perfectly manicured nail to the sign on the podium that read: Restroom for Customers Only." A charming stranger saves Sirius Black from a sticky situation when little Harry's on the verge of wetting himself.
The London Underground Book of Love by Children_of_the_Shadows
The cardinal rule of the London Underground is to never, ever make eye contact. It is a rule that, among many others, Sirius tends to follow despite his otherwise rebellious, non-rule-following nature. So the first time he makes eye contact with a human being in the subway comes as much of a shock to him as anyone else. Especially when he's unable to look away.
False accusations -orphaned account
It's December 1981 and Sirius has his hands full with Harry, when one afternoon he receives an unexpected visit from Child Protection Services.
On Behalf of the Souls -orphaned account
When Remus gets into an unwitting row with a couple of drunk men at the pub, the last thing he expects is for the gorgeous person at the end of the bar to come to his rescue. But the Universe seems to be interested in seeing them together, as Sirius Black finds something he likes very much about Remus Lupin, and aims to keep him.

У черта на куличках [u chyorta na kulichkah] - "at the devil's babkas"
This is my "Russian idiom of the day" column, and today let's see some of my favourite kind of weird Russian phrases... lookin weird just until you know it's origin. As you know, I love idioms which are not clear even to Russian people, so right now is one of them.
The meaning of it is - "somewhere very distantly of known places".
«У них контора — где-то у черта на куличках, от конечной метро еще десять минут на автобусе» — "They have their office in a kind of weird distant place; I should go there by subway up to terminate station, and then catch a bus to go 10 minutes more"
Tumblr media
Some Russian people say it as «у черта на куличиках», which sounds much alike to «на куличках». But куличики and кулички are definitely not the same!
If one is у черта на куличиках, it may mean one of two things:
1. The devil (also, I said in one of my former posts, черт is not the Devil himself, but a kind of demon, an evil occult power, usually impictured having horns, a long tail and goat legs) is having a dinner, where the main dish is куличи (pl. from кулич, also the diminutive plural form would be куличики). Кулич is a special type of sweet bread, baked mostly at Easter. I've got known it can be named in English a Babka. That's what Russian Easter куличи aka babkas look like:
Tumblr media
2. The devil (see before) is having a beach party, and invites you for making куличики out of sand. That's another idiomatic thing (in fact it's not, if you remember what кулич is). Because when Russian children are playing in a sandbox, building some constructions out of sand, basically it's called лепить куличики [lepit' kulichiki] - "to make babkas". We dont' say "to make sandcastles" until you really make an effort to do on sand something looking like a real castle. Otherwise - if you just take a plastic bucket, fill it with sand, then turn it upside down and remove a bucket - it's called лепить куличики. Just because the shape which is got looks much alike to a babka.
Tumblr media
So, anyway. We can think that this idiom tells us of some devil's party, sand of eating or anyway. But it DOES NOT. So, let's see what mysterious куличики really are.
In old Russia, almost entirely covered with woods (part of them in East is famous Taiga), there was some special attitude to forest and everything about it. There was special names for some parts of the forest. One of them described a glade, located deep inside the forest, far from people's houses at the enter of the woods.
Tumblr media
These glades were meant to be enchanted. People believed that evil powers (such as черт, also леший [leshiyi] - "a wood-goblin", and кикимора [kikimora] - "a wood-maid") were reigning there. The name for these glades was кулиги [kuligi], pl.; sing. would be кулига [kuliga]. Diminutive for this word (also plural) was кулички. Exactly the same we see in the idiom.
Not a babka party. Not a sand party. Just a distant and spooky place, maybe occupied with occult beings; which, therefore, can be used for living and business. Just because one day people became brave enough to go into woods and look for кулиги and build there houses for their families. That were the people who lived у черта на куличках - very very far away from the main settlement. Now we can say this (if we are Moscow residents) of someone who lives in Бирюлёво [biryulyovo] or Бутово [butovo] districts; and as for some St.Petersburgh residents (maybe I'm totally wrong and should be punished for that by my St. Peter's sweetheart, hehe), it could be Купчино [kupchino] and Автово [avtovo] districts.
-----
P.S. I've just figured out that some Russian folk creatures may be interesting to my foregn followers too! Just right from the post of Karachun, who've been a cruel God of Winter and ended up as a Russian Santa, a nice kid's friend. SOOOOO. Would you like me to make some Russian occult beings posts? DM or comment "+" if you do!

You’re Gonna Miss Me
(When I’m Gone)
Read on Ao3
/ST*RKERS DNI/
~~~~~
Tony doesn’t know why he’s so nervous.
That’s a lie. Utter bullshit. He’s lying to himself. Tony knows exactly why his heart is fluttering in his chest like he’d run a marathon, why his chest struggled to rise like there was twenty pound weight rested on it.
Though to be fair, when he made an anonymous donation of a meager 50,000 dollars to Midtown Science and Technology, he hadn’t expected Peter’s decathlon team to put in a request to the school board to travel abroad, and he definitely hadn’t expected the school to immediately approve it. He thought they’d use it to replace the sudsy water in the bathrooms they called soap with the real stuff or some shit, not whisk his kid away to Vienna for a whole week where Tony couldn’t even hug him, couldn’t protect him.
Peter is thrilled, though. Ecstatic. When he’d broken the news to Tony and May, he’d been over the moon with excitement, his round cheeks flushed pink and his eyes gleaming. Even two weeks ago, Tony had felt a deep sense of apprehension kindling in his chest, but with the date seemingly so far away, he’d pushed it to the back of his mind.
He wishes now that he’d done something. He should have told Peter he couldn’t bear to be without him like he was an actor in a cheesy soap opera (it was true, he couldn’t); tell Peter he needed him on a “mission” that would mysteriously be canceled. Though they’d probably end up taking a plane or a suit to Vienna anyways (despite what he liked to say to Rhodey, he was not at all immune to Peter’s puppy eyes); hell, he should have purposely tripped on the stairs and broken his leg so Peter, sweet, kind, empathetic Peter, would immediately decide to stay by his side where Tony could keep him safe.
He missed Peter when he was at his apartment in fucking Queens, thirty minutes from Stark Tower. He didn’t know how he’d handle having him 4,222 miles away. He didn’t know if he could.
“Damn,” he hisses, pushing himself from his bed with a grunt and making a beeline towards Peter’s room. He dashes in. The sight of his sleeping son (read: lump of blankets) is enough to take his breath away.
Tony had missed him. It had been four hours since he’d tucked him in and kissed him goodnight, and Tony had missed him. Peter was fifteen feet away.
This trip is going to be the death of him. He’s going to drop dead of a goddamn heart attack before Peter even gets on the plane.
Tony sinks carefully onto the mattress and rests his hand on the boy’s neck, some deep, parental instinct in him immediately soothed by the slow, steady beat of his pulse. Peter is curled under the thick blue blanket, only his chestnut curls visible which are tinged blue from the Iron Man nightlight on the wall, his breath puffing out in those little snuffling snores that Tony absolutely adores.
He leans down to kiss his temple, inhales the familiar scent of his favorite strawberry shampoo and is overwhelmed by the wave of infinite love that washes over him. He loves this kid so much it sometimes hurts.
Leaning back, he smooths his thumb over Peter’s cheekbone. He doesn’t want to leave the boy’s side. He doesn’t know if he physically can. Maybe asleep Peter has somehow sensed this, because there’s a small mewl from the bundle of blankets, and two bleary doe eyes flutter open.
“T’ny?”
“Hey,” Tony whispers, running a hand through his curls. “Hey, jellybean. Sorry I woke you up.” Peter rolls over with heavy limbs and rubs his eyes with a fist in a childlike motion, yawning in a way that resembles all those yawning kitten videos he’s made Tony watch.
God, he’s adorable, Tony thinks. His heart is melting. He’s so small, so young. Tony feels an instinctual, almost uncontrollable urge to protect this kid, to wrap him in his arms and keep him from harm for the rest of time.
Peter is oblivious. “‘S… s’okay,” he mumbles. His hand sneaks out of the blankets and tugs on his arm lethargically, which the genius knows is sleepy Peter language for “cuddle with me.” Tony chuckles fondly and slides under the covers.
He props himself up on an elbow and gazes down at his beloved boy, stroking a finger down his cheek. Peter smiles sleepily up at him from his assortment of pillows. “Hi.”
His face splits into a wide grin. “Hi, Pete.”
Peter frowns at him then, a sudden change from his drowsy, half-asleep state. “You… you ‘kay? Wha’ time’s it?” He tries to sit up, but Tony hushes him gently with a “Everything’s okay, bud, just a typical 2am visit from your friendly neighborhood Iron Man.”
He smiles, so Tony counts the joke as a win. It’s not one of his best, but hey, forgive him if he’s a little anxious about his kid going to another fucking continent.
(He refuses to acknowledge that it’s not just being away from Peter that’s stressing him out, it’s the fact that anything could happen to him while they’re apart.)
Tony looks back to Peter, opening his mouth to talk, only to find that he’s completely conked out. He balls up the sleeve of his sweatshirt and wipes the line of drool tracing down the boy’s chin away, finding that a soft smile has formed on his face, the one that only makes its appearance around Peter.
Peter snuggles into him the second he lies down, resting his curly head just over his heart. Tony wraps a protective arm around his back and rubs small circles on his soft blanket hoodie. “G’night,” he whispers, bending to kiss the top of his head. “Sweet dreams, baby. I love you.”
He can feel Peter’s heartbeat thumping steadily against his chest- can hear his soft kitten snores. The warm weight of his body is so comforting that for a moment he thinks that maybe, just maybe, this trip isn’t going to be the end of him. That everything’s going to be okay.
~~~~~
Peter’s starting to regret eating all those waffles for breakfast. He feels shaky all over, like he could collapse or throw up any second. He’d told Tony he was going to pop in the bathroom, but he’s been in there for at least ten minutes, settled back on his heels on the cold, grimy floor of an airport bathroom, trying to breathe properly.
Speaking of Tony, he can hear the man just outside the door, typing on his phone and sipping from a cheap cup of coffee. Peter immediately experiences a hot flash of guilt, realizing that he must have grown worried while he was gone.
Sure enough, the door swings open and there’s a soft knock. “Pete? Everything okay, bud?”
Peter stands up and unlocks the stall. “Tony,” he sniffles, taking an unsteady step forward. Tony rushes forward and gathers him in his arms
“Whoa, hey, hey, you’re okay,” he says gently, rubbing a hand up and down his back. “You’re okay, Pete. Breathe, just breathe, bud. It’s okay.”
“I don’t-” Peter whispers. “I don’t know, Tony, I-I wanna go, but I can’t, I don’t know w-what to do.”
“Breathe, honey. It’s okay, I’m here, we’ll figure this out, okay? You just gotta take a breath, alright?”
Peter tries- fails. Tries again, and manages to gasp a breath in. “Sorry,” he croaks, when he can properly breathe again. “Tony, I-I don’t-”
“It’s okay,” Tony murmurs, squeezing him tight. “Nothing to be sorry for, Pete.” After snatching a paper towel and soaking it in the sink, he runs the scratchy cloth over Peter’s face and kisses his forehead when he’s done. “Okay, bubba. You wanna go back out or stay in here?”
“Out,” he replies without hesitation. The flickering white lights above are starting to give him a headache, not to mention the leaky faucet and the freezing tile floors and the faulty air conditioning. Tony leads him out with an arm around his shoulder and guides him to a little nook, where they both plop down on a neon green beanbag.
“My parents died in a plane crash,” Peter whispers.
Tony squeezes his shoulder. “I know buddy. I’m sorry.” Unlike a lot of the “sorries” Peter has heard, this one is sincere. Sometimes he forgets that Tony is an orphan too.
“I- I mean, logically, I know the plane won’t crash,” he continues, “But I guess it’s still hard for me to believe that. Like a- a gut feeling?”
The man nods in understanding. “I know how you feel, kiddo. I was terrified of cars after my parents died- I took the subway everywhere despite the paparazzi bloodhounds.” Tony doesn’t broach the subject of his parent’s deaths often, especially not in a crowded public airport, so Peter makes sure to pay attention.
“Then, the fear just kinda… vanished.” He wiggles his fingers dramatically. “I started driving without even thinking, didn’t realize I was in a car ‘til I got on the highway. I had to pull over when I did, but since then, I’m perfectly fine with cruisin’ at 80 mph. But,” he says seriously, meeting Peter’s eyes. “I think you should listen to what your gut’s tellin’ you, buddy. It’s important to listen to yourself- what inner you is saying.” He pokes Peter’s belly a couple times for good measure, which makes his face scrunch up adorably.
Peter nods, and really tries to listen to his gut. The pair both go silent in concentration, and then- his stomach grumbles. They both burst into laughter, born more from nerves than hilarity.
“Inner you wants to eat,” Tony snorts. “I think I saw a place with the biggest blueberry muffins of my life by the escalators, wanna stop there?”
Despite eating a huge stack of waffles just hours earlier, Peter wolfs down two of the gigantic blueberry poppyseed muffins, much to the amusement of Tony.
They made their way to the gate, where Peter’s teacher, Mr. Harrington was lounging, dressed in an ugly red sweater, his long legs stretched in front of him.
“Peter!” he cried as he spotted them, scrambling to his feet. “Thank god, I was beginning to think I had the wrong date! We’re leaving today, right?”
“Oh, yeah Mr. Harrington, we’re going today!” Peter laughs. He’s used to dealing with his scatter-brained teacher. “I’m actually here early, the plane’s supposed to leave at 1:00.” He gestures vaguely to the big digital clock over his head reading 11:54 AM, EDT.
Mr. Harrington frowns. “I thought it left at 8 am! You mean I’ve been here for hours in this awful chair when I could have been sipping a piña colada in my jacuzzi?!” He collapses back in his chair and pulls a sleeping mask over his eyes with a sigh.
“Sorry, Mr. Harrington,” Peter chuckles, then pulls Tony to a row of uncomfortable seats in the corner of the waiting area.
They sit in comfortable silence for a bit, just watching the various travellers rush past. A little girl, around two or three, comes up and shyly asks for Tony’s autograph, but no one else recognizes the genius. (Thanks to his foolproof disguise of a baseball cap and scarf covering up his iconic beard, the genius claims.)
“So, what are we thinking?” Tony asks after about half an hour. “Do you wanna go?” He secretly hopes Peter will say no, hopes that they can go home and binge watch all of the Star Trek episodes and fill their bodies with junk.
Peter nods hesitantly. “I think so. I-is that okay? I might change my mind, but- yes. Yeah, I think I want to go.”
 Tony squeezes his hand. “Of course it’s okay baby, that’s perfectly fine. If you change your mind, you know what? That’s great too. Whatever you want, that’s what’s important.” He kisses Peter’s forehead and lets his hand linger for a moment where it rests on the boy’s cheek. “If you change your mind at any point, I’ll come pick you up, okay?”
“Thanks, Tony,” Peter breathes, slumping heavily against his side.
“Of course, bud. Anything for my Peter.”
They stop for lunch at a cozy little coffee shop, which is thankfully devoid of fans and paparazzi. Peter orders (or rather, makes Tony order) a small hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows and whipped cream) even though drinking a lot before a non-stop ten hour flight is probably not the best idea. (He can’t help it. He’s nervous.)
When the pair gets back to their gate, they find Ned and his family. The boy’s greet each other enthusiastically, performing their signature handshake, while Tony simply throws up a peace sign to Ned’s rather stunned parents.
The friends pull out their phones -probably playing one of those ghastly animated games that Peter is always quoting. Tony pretends to look busy on his phone, but really, he’s just trying to distract himself from the terrifying fact that he’s not going to see Peter for a week.
Too soon, the speaker crackles, a crisp voice announcing, “Attention. We are now boarding flight 367 nonstop to Vienna, Austria. Now boarding flight 367 nonstop to Vienna, Austria.”
Tony’s heart stops. Peter freezes.
No, they think at the same time. Not yet.
Peter turns to Tony, panicked. “Hey,” the man says, pushing away every anxiety, every worry away so he can focus on his kid. He sees Ned approach them, but stop when his father places a hand on his shoulder. “Hey, it’s okay. Breathe, baby, it’s okay.”
“Tony.” Peter wraps his skinny arms around his waist.
“I know, baby, I know.” Tony kisses the top of his head and hugs him close. “Follow my breathing. You’re okay. We’re good.”
Around them, the members of the decathlon team are rising, but Tony and Peter sit in those unforgettable chairs, clutching each other tightly, not yet ready to let go.
“I’m gonna miss you,” Peter whimpers.
“I know kiddo, me too. I’m gonna miss you so much, but I’m always gonna be here, okay? If you need me, just call, or text, use morse code, doesn’t matter. I’m always here for you.”
“I’m here for you too,” Peter says. “I- I’ll call you every day.” Peter’s bottom lip is trembling, just barely, but enough for Tony to hug him a little tighter and kiss his forehead. “I love you, Tony,” he sniffs.
“I love you too, Pete. I love you so much.” Tony’s not crying. He’s not. The restaurant a few stores down is just cooking onions, that’s why his eyes are watering.
Peter pulls away and grabs his duffel bag, taking a step toward the loading dock. Tony tries not to burst into sobs. Stay, his mind whispers. Please stay.
Then Peter turns around, eyes full of tears, and slams straight into Tony’s chest, hugging him so tight he can barely breathe. Tony rocks them back and forth, cherishing everything about his sweet boy. When they finally break apart, Peter says, “I’ll be back before you know it,” echoing what Tony has said to him so many times before he leaves for a business trip.
Then he smiles a watery smile and runs to catch up with his best friend. Just before he disappears into the loading dock, he turns around and waves wildly at Tony.
Tony waves back, grinning. “I love you,” he mouths.
“I love you too!” Peter mouths back, and steps into the dock.
“I love you,” Tony whispers, hastily wiping the dampness from his eyes. “I love you, Peter.”

First Meeting
Where y/n gets lost on the subway trying to go back to her new home in queens and meets a certain brown haired boy...
Pairing: Peter x fem!reader
Status: strangers...for now ;)
Y/n POV
Please TELL ME WHY NEW YORK HAS SO MANY SUBWAYS. I've been trying to find my subway stop for the past 20 minutes! And I only have 10 mins left before it leaves! So I'm basically scrambling trying to find train 21C.
while I was running, I saw a brown haired boy wearing a blue long sleeve shirt and a dark blue jacket, listening to music. The wire of his earphones is tucked behind his shirt, and his curls are loosening from the gel he put on.
I really couldn't keep my eyes off of him so I just followed, I couldn't find my subway anyway so what do I got to lose? He finally stopped walking and guess which train he takes...21C
talk about coincidence, I mentally thanked him, even though I don't know this incredibly handsome stranger. and got in the train. I took a seat and scanned the train to find him again.
Peters POV
I was walking to my train, running a little late, but I felt like I was being watched due to my spidey senses, I just shrugged it off coz I had to get to this train as soon as possible.
Once I got in, I decided to stand the whole way, because other people need the seat more than I do. And I just kept scrolling through my phone until the train started moving and I couldn't control my hands and the phone just slipped out of my fingers.
So the phone fell on the ground, I bent down to take it and I felt the same feeling, like I was being watched, so when i stood up I looked infront and saw..probably the most beautiful girl I've ever seen.
Y/n POV
Our eyes locked, OUR FREAKING EYES LOCKED, i can see him fully now, his (know I know) brown eyes and lightly freckled face looked at me with...a slight smile? OH MY GOD HES SMILING AT ME...GOD Y/N SMILE BACK! and thankfully I did.
he kept staring at me and I obviously stared back...until the announcement came up scaring the both of us.
ANNOUNCEMENT: WELCOME EVERYONE, OUR FIRST STOP IS JACOBUS ST. PLEASE STAY IN YOUR SEAT AT ALL TIMES AND THANK YOU.
After the announcement i shuffled at my seat trying to get comfortable, putting on my headphones and turning my "while at the subway" playlist I created 30 mins ago. And I kept seeing this boy stealing glances towards me which made me blush.
Peter POV
Ok ok she's so pretty how did I not see her before? I could've looked forward to go to the subway more? Wait- maybe she's new here...I CAN GIVE HER A TOUR- ok stop Peter she's probably new here and I don't know if we'll be friends, hopefully we will be friends...and more OK STOP. I got interrupted by ned texting me.
Guy in the chair : Ned
Pickle Parker 😜: Peter
Guy in the chair 🤓: Pete, u there yet?
Pickles Parker 😜: DUDE THERE'S A REALLY PRETTY GIRL IN MY TRAIN RN AND IDK WHAT TO DO
Guy in the chair 🤓: thanks for ignoring my question 🙄
Guy in the chair 🤓: wait-
Guy in the chair 🤓: WAIT WHAT?
pickle Parker 😜: AND U REALIZED JUST NOW???
Guy in the chair 🤓: talk to her, DONT PASS UP THE OPPORTUNITY! and if she's a bratty brat brat, then I'm sorry bro you'll find one dw
Pickle Parker 😜: "bratty brat brat" ???
Pickle Parker 😜: anyways ok thanks bro, wait the train stopped and the woman next to her left, maybe I can sit next to her?
Guy in the chair 🤓: WHY TF ARE U ASKING??
pickle Parker 😜: ok ok jeez
Ok Peter you got this, I turned off my music so I can focus more, and just went for it. She was also listening to music while reading a book, annnnnd I went for it, I WENT FOR IT HOLY MOTHER OF-
y/n POV
I was peacefully reading while listening to my music when i suddenly felt a presence beside me, I turned to my left and saw him...YES HIM OH GOOD LORD HES SITTING NEXT ME LOOKING NERVOUS AS HELL AWWW, wait why is he nervous? IS IT BECAUSE OF ME? OMG OMG
"h-hey" the boy said nervously, rubbing his hand on the back of his neck
"Hi!" Oh my god Why am I screaming! y/n stop keep it down a notch!
"Are you new here? Coz I've never seen you in this train before" the boy said
not looking in my eyes, clearly his nerves are still eating him up which made me laugh a bit
"Yeah I am" i said "I'm y/n..by the way" I extended my hand awkwardly
"P-Peter, Peter Parker" he shook my hand, Peter huh? It suits him, there was a moment of awkward silence not knowing what to talk about, but then Peter interrupted the silence by asking:
"So which grade are you in?...not trying to be creepy or anything you just look-"
"Grade 10" I replied laughing a bit, trying to stop his rambling
"Oh, uh me too!" He said, a little bit more confident now and..relieved? He's probably happy that we're in the same grade
"Which school do you go to?" He asks another question.
"Oh ummm.." I say kinda nervous he'll leave me for what I'm about to say "it's uhh midtown.." I say, now I getting nervous. His facial expressions were unreadable, oh no he's probably gonna ditch me for being a nerd.
"REALLY? I uh mean really? Me too!" he beams, so the hot cute guy is also a genius?
"So I'll see you more often then?" I smirk
"y-yeah yeah hopefully" he blushes, I made him blush!! Ugh he's so cute
"what we're you listening to?" Peter asks trying to hide his blush
"oh 'left hand free' by alt-j" I reply shrugging my shoulders.
"And she keeps getting better and better" he whispered hanging his head low
"What?" I ask smiling, knowing exactly what he said
"Oh uhh nothing, I just know we're gonna be great friends" he says smiling at me, and
Oh what an understatement that was...
OKKKK THAT WAS MY FIRST IMAGINE I have a lot of ideas and I can't wait to publish them, I'm thinking of doing YouTube and TikTok ones as well so if you have any ideas just text me!
