SAINT OF THE DAY (June 23)
Tumblr media
St. Æthelthryth, also known as Etheldreda or Audrey, especially in religious contexts, was Queen of Northumbria.
Her father was King Anna of East Anglia.
Her siblings were Wendreda and Seaxburh of Ely, both of whom eventually retired from secular life and founded abbeys.
She was born at around 630 in Exning, near Newmarket in Suffolk.
While still very young, she was given in marriage by her father to Tondberct, chief or prince of the South Gyrwe. He was a subordinate prince who gave her a piece of land locally known as the Isle of Ely.
She managed to persuade her husband to respect her vow of perpetual virginity that she had made prior to their marriage.
Upon his death in 655, she retired to the Isle of Ely, which she had received from Tondberct as a morning gift.
Etheldreda was forced to marry again out political convenience, this time to Ecgfrith, King of Northumbria.
Throughout her 12 years of marriage, she kept her virginity. She gave much of her time to devotion and charity.
St. Wilfrid was her friend and spiritual guide. He helped to persuade her husband that Etheldreda should live for some time in peace as a sister of the Coldingham nunnery, founded by her aunt, St. Ebb.
During this time, she only ate once a day, except on feast days or while she was sick, and wore only clothes made of wool.
After midnight prayers, she would always go back to the church and continue praying until morning.
Etheldreda took pain and humiliation as a blessing.
On her death bed, she thanked God for an illness that had painfully swollen her neck, which she considered to be punishment for having vainly worn necklaces with jewels as a young lady.
She died on 23 June 679. She was buried in a wooden coffin, as she had asked.
When her body was moved to a stone coffin, it was found incorrupt and her neck was perfectly healed, according to physicians.
She is the patron saint of throat and neck complaints.

Saint Audrey (Etheldreda) 640-679 Feast Day: June 23 Patronage: Cambridge University, neck and throat ailments, and widows
Saint Audrey was an English princess, who took a vow of perpetual virginity at an early age, even though she consented to be married two times for diplomatic reasons. Her first husband died after 3 years and the 2nd husband (Egfrid) was a boy when they married. After 12 years, Egfrid wanted to consummate the marriage. The bishop of York, St.Wilfrid, upheld Audrey’s claim of virginity and helped her separate from him. The marriage was annulled, and Audrey took the veil at the Monastery of Ely. She eventually died of an enormous and unsightly tumor on her neck, which she gratefully accepted as Divine retribution for all the necklaces she had worn in her early years. Her hand is incorrupt to this day.

Happy STS! But oh no! One of your characters has been stabbed! What chaos does this bring about? Who's been stabbed, who did the stabbing, who yanks the sword out without thinking, etc.? ♥️
Tumblr media
Just for the sake of chaos… I’m gonna say, Benjamin Fisher. Or, vampire and slow corruption arc Benjamin Tallmadge from TURN: Washington’s Spies. Not just stabbed, Ben’s favourite horse was shot from under him and he lays dying on the battlefield, in Yorktown, Virginia, in 1781. The date is October 1st, 1781, the siege is halfway over and the Americans are winning. It is pure bad luck.
Tumblr media
Audrey would simply say, “No good deed goes unpunished.”
Tumblr media
Audrey screams. Audrey tries real hard not to have a mental breakdown. Audrey swore she’d never turn him. But this isn’t fair to either of them, and the war is not over, Benjamin insisted on finishing what he started. Ethics and future consequences can go to hell. He may hate her for this, but this is bigger than either of them at this point…
Audrey stops hesitating. Like a French Valkyrie come to judge the worthy, she rides out to where Benjamin lays dying.
Audrey doesn’t need to drain him, the bullet and the redcoats blade did that just fine.
Moments before Ben is “lost”, just enough to briefly glimpse the other side, who knows what he sees, Audrey doesn’t believe in heaven or hell, she is an atheist, for now.
Benjamin is turned into a vampire in a last ditch attempt (though hypocritical) by Audrey to not lose him. The war doesn’t end until 1783, America wins. To the shock of the 18th century world stage, it only took 5 years of war and French support. (naval blockade in the West Indies and a sea battle in India, which America wins).
Benjamin asks himself: “what is the cost of my soul?”
Tumblr media
Note: this is just basically Fisher’s origin story, or how he got vampirism. I have no intention of ending this fic, that way. I may be a morally complex bi, but, Benjamin Tallmadge would have a religious Protestant mental breakdown if that happened. Yay for original characters!

no because when ben reveals he knew he had been spelled by mal and she asks if he had been faking his love for her then but he assures her he hadnt and she has that bittersweet smile because shes so relieved to be loved back but at the same time it means betraying him will hit so much harder and she no longer has control over his, and even her own, feelings anymore AAARERGGHHHFAAAAAHHH

St. Audrey the Monster-Slayer, Our Lady of The End
The concept of a stained glass window for Audrey fascinates me so so much because she'd love it, you know? She'd adore being sainted and revered. But also, like, if she had succeeded... nobody would be around to call her a saint. Real heroes don't get stained glass windows.
