the previous owner of this apartment left most of, well, everything here. she's a wonderful woman - 86 years old I think - and we're in constant contact as we helped her move, and also promised we'll keep some of her things until she has the new furniture at her new place to put it in. mostly things like furs and coats and sewing supplies, pots and pans, winter shoes and old tents, stuff like that. she's a darling - who's also supposed to teach me to knit soon, by the way - so we don't mind storing her stuff until whenever it will be that she can take them.
but most of it she just said she doesn't want at all anymore - a clean start, less clutter, no need for all that stuff that's accumulated over the decades. "donate it or throw it away, or keep it if you like it"
she's left me nearly all of her books, happy that I said I absolutely won't be throwing them away. a lot of glassware and kitchen supplies, ancient things, beautiful trinkets and a lot of stuff that she doesn't even remember how she got or what's it for.
we've been having such a blast sorting through it all. sure, a lot of it is garbage, broken or destroyed or useless, and it all smells quite funny, but other than that - what an adventure!

Sorry I’ve been so MIA lately, but my husband and I bought a new (old) house!
I was thinking about posting some of our misadventures in fixing this hundred year old beauty up since that might be all the painting I have time for in the foreseeable future. (Also my art studio is in boxes until the new studio space is fixed up. Which uh, might be a while)
Hopefully the new neighbors are cool with the 12ft skeleton.

there are some things that inherently have a lot of Feeling to me and it's weird realizing that it's not unusual or uncommon for this to not be the case for people but it's also strange because it's hard not to react to things like old floorboards or old brick structures or the interiors of dilapidated houses. like, the self control it takes to not swoon in some sort of overwhelming reverence....what do you mean you don't feel it too

The Stairs at my family’s cabin are definitely stairs that can kill you. And yes, the bottom DOES butt up against a kitchen counter. You kind of have to hop over it to get up the shallow, ladder like stairs. (Isn’t this great? A real house submission!) Thanks to undeadhousewife!

I'm begging home renovators. If you're in a position where you have to remove outdoor steps anyway - why not just update them with a ramp?
Disabled people. Young children. The elderly. Those are a few good examples of why you should choose to update with a ramp. Not to mention it's easier to move stuff in & out.
& as someone who used to volunteer with the historical society & help renovate/repair old homes & buildings. You can update with ramps that fit the aesthetic/time period of the property.
If you're doing a new build. Please consider ramps inside instead of stairs too. For the same reasons!
Plus, they're super cool looking!
