How to Manage Risks Associated with a Microlearning Initiative
Tumblr media
Microlearning has become an increasingly popular method of training and development in organizations. It involves delivering content in small, easily digestible chunks, which can be consumed quickly and conveniently. This approach aligns well with the modern workforce's preference for flexible, on-the-go learning. However, like any initiative, microlearning comes with its own set of risks. Effectively managing these risks is crucial to ensuring the success of a microlearning initiative. This article explores the potential risks associated with microlearning and offers strategies for mitigating them.
Understanding Microlearning
Before diving into risk management, it's essential to understand what microlearning entails. Microlearning delivers training content in short, focused segments, typically lasting between three to ten minutes. These segments can take various forms, including videos, quizzes, infographics, podcasts, and interactive modules. The primary benefits of microlearning are its flexibility, accessibility, and the ability to cater to the learning needs of a diverse workforce.
Identifying Risks in a Microlearning Initiative
1. Content Overload
One of the main risks associated with microlearning is content overload. While microlearning aims to break down information into manageable pieces, there is a danger of overwhelming learners with too many segments. If not carefully managed, the sheer volume of content can lead to cognitive overload, reducing the effectiveness of the training.
2. Lack of Depth
Microlearning focuses on brevity and conciseness, which can sometimes result in a lack of depth in the training material. Complex topics may require more comprehensive coverage than what microlearning segments can provide. This risk can lead to insufficient understanding of critical concepts, affecting the overall learning outcomes.
3. Inconsistent Quality
With microlearning, there is often a reliance on multiple content creators, which can lead to inconsistencies in the quality of the training materials. Variations in presentation style, accuracy, and instructional design can confuse learners and undermine the initiative's effectiveness.
4. Technical Issues
Microlearning is heavily reliant on technology. Issues such as platform compatibility, software glitches, and internet connectivity problems can disrupt the learning experience. These technical issues can cause frustration among learners and hinder the adoption of the microlearning program.
5. Engagement Challenges
Keeping learners engaged with microlearning content can be challenging. The short duration of microlearning segments requires them to be highly engaging and interactive to maintain learner interest. If the content fails to captivate the audience, learners may disengage, resulting in low completion rates and poor knowledge retention.
6. Measuring Effectiveness
Evaluating the effectiveness of a microlearning initiative can be complex. Traditional metrics such as test scores and completion rates may not fully capture the impact of microlearning on performance and skill development. Without robust evaluation methods, it becomes difficult to demonstrate the return on investment (ROI) of the microlearning initiative.
Strategies for Managing Risks
1. Curate and Prioritize Content
To avoid content overload, organizations should curate and prioritize the microlearning content carefully. Focus on delivering the most critical and relevant information first. Implement a structured learning path that guides learners through the material in a logical sequence. This approach helps prevent cognitive overload and ensures that learners can absorb and retain the essential concepts.
2. Balance Breadth and Depth
While microlearning segments should be concise, it's essential to balance breadth and depth. For complex topics, consider using a combination of microlearning and other training methods, such as in-depth workshops or comprehensive e-learning courses. This hybrid approach allows learners to gain a thorough understanding of intricate subjects while benefiting from the flexibility of microlearning.
3. Maintain Consistent Quality
To address the risk of inconsistent quality, establish clear guidelines and standards for content creation. Provide training and support for content creators to ensure they adhere to these standards. Regularly review and update the training materials to maintain accuracy and relevance. Consistency in quality helps build trust and credibility in the microlearning initiative.
4. Ensure Technical Reliability
Invest in reliable technology platforms that support microlearning delivery. Conduct thorough testing to identify and resolve potential technical issues before launching the initiative. Provide technical support to learners to assist with any problems they may encounter. Ensuring a smooth and seamless technical experience is vital for the success of a microlearning program.
5. Enhance Engagement
To keep learners engaged, incorporate interactive and multimedia elements into the microlearning content. Use gamification techniques, such as quizzes, badges, and leaderboards, to motivate learners. Personalize the learning experience by tailoring content to individual preferences and needs. Engaging content fosters better retention and application of knowledge.
6. Implement Robust Evaluation Methods
Develop robust evaluation methods to measure the effectiveness of the microlearning initiative. Use a combination of quantitative and qualitative metrics to assess learning outcomes. Track learner progress, completion rates, and performance improvements. Collect feedback from learners to identify areas for improvement. Demonstrating the impact of microlearning on performance and business goals helps justify the investment.
7. Foster a Learning Culture
Creating a supportive learning culture within the organization is crucial for the success of any training initiative. Encourage continuous learning by promoting the benefits of microlearning. Provide opportunities for learners to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. Recognize and reward employees who actively engage in the microlearning program. A positive learning culture enhances motivation and engagement.
Conclusion
Microlearning offers numerous benefits for modern organizations, but it also comes with its own set of risks. By understanding and proactively managing these risks, organizations can maximize the effectiveness of their microlearning initiatives. Curating and prioritizing content, balancing breadth and depth, maintaining consistent quality, ensuring technical reliability, enhancing engagement, implementing robust evaluation methods, and fostering a learning culture are essential strategies for mitigating risks. With careful planning and execution, microlearning can be a powerful tool for driving continuous learning and development in the workplace.

btw artists you should maybe stop posting your art on pinterest if that's something you've been doing, i know a few ppl who have been sharing their art there
i'm not sure if this section has been updated at all or if it's always been this way but I was taking a read through their soon-to-be-implemented update to their TOS to see if they'll be adding anything with the increased usage of AI and this looks like perhaps this section exists (at least in part) for that reason 🤔 [thinking emoji]
Tumblr media
unfortunately their report function for art theft/reposting has historically been less than stellar (an understatement) and I don't really see it improving any time soon but perhaps they will improve it with this update to their TOS and privacy policy! one can hope at least!
link to the preview of the new TOS: https://policy.pinterest.com/en/terms-of-service-preview
alt text for the screenshot below, as well as linked in the embedded image description feature:
A screenshot of a section of Pinterest's new Terms of Service. The subsection heading reads: "How we and other users can use your User Content". The highlighted text reads: "By providing any User Content on the Service, you grant us license to use, store, publicly perform or display, reproduce, save, modify, create derivative works, monetize, download, translate and distribute your User Content. Nothing in these Terms entitles you to any payments or the right to share in any revenue from any monetization of User Content."

I think sometimes how yall talk about miss powers is weird like the nonstop hate and always calling her a bitch. Rubs me the wrong way, like she is an interesting character who had brought an interesting challenge to wordgirl concerning critical thinking as well as teaching the lesson of how it can be dangerous to blindly trust authority figures or even becoming a follower to someone because they seem skilled/talented
That's one thing that's always bothered me, is how we can acknowledge the misogynistic tropes concerning ships like tobecky, which need to be acknowledged. However misogynistic mindsets continue on in the Fandom concerning a few female characters, I've seen people have unreasonable hate towards Miss Powers, Claire McCalister, and even Violet.
And it makes me sad :(. Instead of playing with the character and their traits, interactions, and function in the story someone people just villianize them and it is so sad.

This drawing came about for two reasons—
1: I wanted to have a picture that was more representative of TJ's build/body type
2: I wanted to draw him wearing nothing but his gloves and underwear (and decided to add in the brace and contact mic for flavor)

Really sick of quilting books/magazines that tell you to get a certain yardage of fabric but don't tell you the fabric width they're assuming, not even in the appendix or glossary of terms.

Souls Festival!
A stage, surrounded by trees.. A lonley spotlight shins bright from fhe center. You see a familiar face, Venus, stand under the spotlight. She seems to be wearing a bright costume of the sorts. A microphone appears before her. She takes it off its pedestal and speaks into it.
"Welcome ladies, gentlemen, pokemon of all kinds, to the annual Festival of Souls! My fellow companions and I are filled with immense joy to see so many familiar and new faces this year~"
Venus begins to walk around the stage, her hand on her chest.
"It is truly such a treat, first of all, to see so many of you returning to participate in the Festival once again. Before I release you all though, I shall go over some simple rules, standards, and such for the new commers."
Who can attend?
"First of all, anyone is of course allowed to attend the event. Human and Pokémon alike are free to come! Though I highly suggest that you come in a costume, so that you may be allegible to enter the costume contest! Which I shall get into more detail later."
Starting & End Dates?
"The Souls Festival shall official open on October 5th, 2023, and will last until October 31st! Though, you are free to come into the Festival early, and come and go as you please."
Beverages & Food?
"We have a wide variety of stands, and food carts, all with different and wonderful fall food items to choose from! Though since we don't want any incidents to occur, Miriam will be passing passing out different wines and champagne to those of you who are above a certain age."
Entertainment?
"For this year's special entertainment, I have hired a local band known as the Vortexs', to comd and jam out all of your favorite "family friendly" Halloween tunes!"
Activities?
"There will be many wonderous activities for you to participate in if you come and join the festivities. Such as bobbing for apples, pie baking, hay rides, fortune telling, visitinh different booths, writng Souls Letters, and so much more! As well as the costume contest, which will be open to enter from the start of the festival on October 5th and end on October 27th. Where two winners will be announced. The winner with the best costume will receive the luxurious prize, of their very own bottle lf Souls Ink! With the Souls Ink, you will be able to wrote to your ancestors even when it is not October. That person or pokemon will also receive a spooky suprise message. The second best costume winner will also receive a special spooky message."
Rules, or Guidline?
"Lastly though, all I that I ask of you all, is to just have a good time! But please don't cause too much of a ruckus, or cause to much chaos If indeed myself or one of my companions were to find out you've cause some mischief I am afraid you will be banned from the Festival for five hundred years."
"Though despite the simplest rules, I truly just with for everyone to have fun! So let the Festival commence!"
...
"If you have any questions or concerns, don't be afraid to reach out and ask~"

judging by the "fixes" they've applied to fern and i'm fairly sure also to a few other genes, they likely intend to flatten and generic-ify EVERY gene that does anything interesting with especially the top feathers portion of the wings. :/
#flight rising#the ridiculously strict standardization guidelines they seem to put every gene through recently are actively detrimental to looking good#i don't know why they can't seem to get the idea that different body shapes showing the same gene a little differently is a GOOD thing#rather than every single gene appearing to be the exact same flat pasted on texture. undel's book had a whole thing on that how'dthey forge#we like it when each dragon's shape does something a little unique with gene expression! it makes it worth actually having different breeds#i think whatever tone-deaf standardization guidelines they're following are likely also actively detrimental to ancient breed design creati#and might even be part of the reason why we haven't gotten any dragons with stuff like turtle shells for the secondary gene yet#because under the current personality-sucking apparent standardization guidelines they would not be allowed to try to adapt any modern gene#to a shell-backed dragon shape#because tweaking them to work on that shape and actually look good would be considered by their standards changing them too much#even though the difference on a majority of genes wouldn't be any greater than the difference between some genes on skydancer vs other wing#under the standardization rules they seem to follow they may literally not be allowed to design even any ancient dragons w/ nonwing seconda#much less with any truly mold-breaking shapes or concepts of wings. they seem to struggle just with figuring out how to apply it to feather#off the top of my had some wing-“wing”-and secondary gene area ideas that would be absolutely possible but i'm fairly sure they'd never do-#“feathers” are actually smaller membranous wings like a fractal. mane. elaborate peacock tail instead of wings. body fins. head frill. bell#throat fan. head crest. overlapping hard scalelike spines flattened into something like a spinosaurus crest. sailfin 2!. inorganic wings.#all of these things are entirely feasible and i have thought on how to adapt genes to them extensively but they would likely never do it#because peregrine-for example-would look perfectly fine-better even- applied to the trailing edges of overlapping armadillo plates#except fr's standardization rules seem to be so ridiculously strict that they would say it can only be on the trailing edge of a wing shape#they just seem to want every gene to be the exact same pasted on flat texture on everything even when it makes no sense on the dragon shape#and even when following that design principle actively looks worse. which it mostly does. it demands they suck the 3d out of everything.#so we end up with a game where every dragon looks like someone put a cutout of a texture on it and adapting it to the 3d shape is a “bug”#give us MORE breeds with anatomical features that cause small but consistent deviations in the depiction of genes!#not less!#it's the tundra butterfly dark manes all over again#we LIKE slight variety that makes sense on the dragon's unique shape! unique forms demand unique adaptations! not flattening!#undel wrote an entire section of an artbook about how patterns should be adapted to your subject's anatomy and shape how did they all forge#is this one of those corporate “to preserve our brand identity” things? is it a loud minority/“listening to the wrong feedback” thing?#it's gotten to the point that there's basically no point even scrying most breeds until at least a year after they come out#because inevitably they're going to abruptly “fix” every single gene that looks interesting and good

had an intriguing revelation yesterday that when i edit my flash (context i open up a blank document and type the flash back out and apply edits as i go bc it feels more active for me) i found it much easier when i didn't include all the formatting like 12pt double space i'll apply for submissions. like my favourite serif font and that's it we jump in. i think it's a combo of 1) simplifying the set up so it's quicker and 2) just straight up on page it won't look like something i'm about to submit. so it kind of tricks my brain to forget about the fact i want to submit this. anyway i love little hacks that trick my tiny writer's brain

this falls into ‘if everyone would just’ venting so don’t take it too seriously but it severely irks me when people are addressing a specific problem from a specific population and do so in a completely ineffective way, you’re not talking to the people this relates to you’re talking to yourself. that’s fine but effective rhetoric is understanding an audience and tailoring your argument to what is most effective against them, not what would be most effective against you. pathos, logos, ethos, whatever the fuck. all communication is manipulation and you are not putting nearly enough effort into manipulation.

"I don't want to be friendly, I want to be HEARD" is, frankly, a ridiculously good line to have come out of my mouth given that the topic in question was me getting so frustrated with the organisation my volunteer team are partnered with that I took a red pen to my copy of the new guidelines
