I had a great week. We've got a bunch of quality of life work and a fix for missing file archived times.

On update, your database will look for archived files that have no recorded archived time. You very probably will, especially if you are an longer-time user, and if you have a big db, it might take a couple minutes. There are two types of missing archived time--anything archived before 2022-02, and a recently discovered bug related to files that archive as they import--and a new maintenance job will walk you through fixing either with good synthetic values.

I added some checkboxes to options->media viewer to further edit what the file info summary line on the top hover window (and optionally the main gui statusbar) says. You can now turn 'archived' on/off, and decide if it shows a time, and turn local file services on/off, again with time or not.

The 'edit ratings predicates' UI gets a complete overhaul. Previously, you edited all the ratings services at once and it was simply not great to work with. I've changed it to work like everything else, where you edit each rating one at a time, each with their own 'ok' button. The various choices here are simpler and clearer now, too.

A whole load of system predicates get label cleanup this week. Much stuff like 'system:width: has width' is now 'system:has width', and the system predicate parser is updated to handle more of these cases, both the old and new formats. Also, 'system:file properties' gets a nice two-column layout.

The macOS App is back! Sorry for missing it last week--github retired version of the thing we use to build it, and I missed the notifications. We've updated from 'macos-12' to 'macos-13', and everything seems to be good. Let me know if you have any trouble with it!

birthday and year summary

The first non-experimental beta of hydrus was released on December 14th, 2011. We are now going on thirteen years.

I had a great 2024. I managed to dig myself out of some IRL holes and kicked out a lot of code this year. I did not finish as many big features as I had planned, but this really turned out to be a good 'optimisation' year. The client is faster, more stable, and simply more pleasurable to set up and use, especially at large scale. The codebase is also generally a little less insane. Users also contributed many times this year, to fix downloaders, help with bugs, or roll out clever interesting new features and nicer platform support for Linux and macOS.

The year started with an overhaul to millisecond-precision timestamps at the database level. We also got time editing for multiple files at once and time editing in the Client API, allowing for better mass-management of timestamps. I pushed on system predicate parsing, and now the simple system predicates' labels, which are also more unified in form, all parse if you paste them back. Thumbnail rearranging was added, and with it the 'incremental tagging' system, the long-planned system to auto-tag files with numbers based on their file order. We got the new 'Number Test' system, which includes precise user control over the +/- absolute or percentage value for a variety of system predicates. URLs received a complete display/storage overhaul, which was a hell of a thing to get finished but ultimately fixed a heap of difficult bugs. The new 'ephemeral' URL parameters also helped to support and optimise some difficult downloaders. Darkmode support improved, and we figured out how to set the program's custom colours via QSS stylesheet. Numerous ad-hoc labels and system terms were unified to the same formats and layouts across the program. Many widgets size themselves better. The thumbnail/media viewer menus were cleaned up and harmonised. Multi-column lists were overhauled to a much more efficient system that sorts faster and only needs to render what is in view, allowing for quick lists even with tens of thousands of rows. Tag filters became more efficient, allowing thousands of tags at once, and the new 'purge tags' tech for tag repo janitors enabled widescale PTR cleanup and lays the groundwork for more en masse tag removal clientside. The sibling and parent dialogs finally got their asynchronous overhaul, so they now boot quickly and can also untangle loops automatically. The parsing system gained some new clever formulae and string processing tools. Search pages received a bunch of OR quality of life. For filetypes, we added rtf, docx, pptx, xlsx, doc, ppt, xls, richer cbz data, animated webp, and, thanks to the long efforts from one user, finally animated ugoira. Database vacuums became easier.

This was also, unfortunately, the year for Win 7's final sunset, and we are likely to see Qt5 go next year. I also removed the ancient 'local booru', now that user-made Client API projects can do its job much better.

As always, there are still too many things I want to do. I am thankful for good health and enough money, and I expect and hope to keep working at this through 2025. I really appreciate the feedback, help, and support over the years. Thank you!

For being as small as it was, Café Leblanc’s convenient and cozy location within Shizume City nevertheless made it a hotspot favored among students from the nearby university in particular. Incidentally, its close proximity to the university also happened to be how Akira came to be aware of its presence. Being in a tight spot after having just moved here from another city, then, it was only natural that he took up the position posted for help, effectively surrendering many of his evenings to the flimsy whims of customers in exchange for the much-needed yen.

Sundays actually tended to be fairly slow a lot of the time, and today was no exception. The only reason he’d been called in was to cover for the owner, who apparently had something he couldn’t bail out on. So today it was really just Akira manning the shop. Well, Akira and the orange-haired girl, whose name he recalled as Futaba Sakura. He didn’t know very much about her, just that she was the owner’s daughter and as such would happen into here sometimes. That’s what the owner had more or less said of her. She tended to keep to herself, but of course, Akira couldn’t help the burgeoning curiosity, and given that the day had been slow and only getting slower as time dragged on--

“Sakura-chan?” Calling out to her like this, Akira stepped out from behind the bar and closer to her. In his hands, he held a fresh, hot bowl of curry, which he’d originally begun preparing for himself as dinner, but it occurred to him that he hadn’t seen the girl eat anything. “...Are you hungry?”

The dark-haired man slowly came to, sitting up carefully and rubbing his head, which was pounding so hard, he could’ve sworn it was going to burst right out of his skull. His memories were a bit fuzzy, until he looked around the room. It appeared he was in... a cell? That was a new one. But the circumstances of how he got there began to return to him.

He was minding his own business, as he usually tended to do. He had no reason to engage with others most of the time, but he was forced into interaction when two men in suits approached him and offered him... something. For him to join him. Well, turns out that he had other things on his agenda, so he turned them down. He knew better than to just go with shifty men with no explanation anyway.

And then he woke up here.

But it appeared he wasn’t alone. Movement in his peripheral caught his attention and he looked over to see a girl with long orange hair beginning to stir. Was she in the same situation he was in? It would do well to ask if she knew what was going on, but if she was just as disoriented as he was, then there was no point. He waited until she sat up fully before greeting her.

“Looks like you’re waking up. You remember anything?” It was blunt, but there was no point beating around the bush.

Noi stretched her arms above her head as she traversed the streets of Shizume, the people around her paying her no mind. She definitely stood out due to her stature, but that might’ve also been a contributing factor to her being left alone by the citizens of the city. Without the extra distraction of random people accosting her for this reason or that, one would think Noi wouldn’t take too long running errands, but she could distract herself window shopping and checking out street food easily enough.

Regardless of her carefree nature, she was pretty observant of the people around her. It came with her job, after all; she’d made plenty of enemies just by being associated with her boss and nothing more. It didn’t escape her notice when she saw a girl with bright orange hair standing in the middle of the street, looking like she was having a pretty hard time. Maybe she was lost? Noi didn’t have anything better to be doing, so what was the harm in helping this girl out?

“Hi, excuse me!” she said, approaching the small-framed girl. “You look like you need some help. Is there something I can do for you?”

LeBlanc served as a fine place to study, at least for a quiet student who could easily eat five portions of curry in a row and show no signs of stopping. Regardless of where he got the money to satisfy his large appetite, he always was able to pay for his multiple servings of both curry and coffee. The the food here was better than any chain, and the service was great too. The owner wasn’t overly friendly or talkative, meaning Minato could slip into a both in the corner, pull his notebooks out, put his headphones on and get to work without being disturbed. He supposed he usually overstayed his welcome...but he ordered at least two things an hour if not more...so he was fine, wasn’t he? He could sit alone and review his material without bothering anyone. Of course, this didn’t prevent him from being bothered.

The dead were always near, of course.

Though LeBlanc in particular was usually free from them...there was only one spirit who he’d call a regular: a woman with jet black hair that stopped above her shoulders, dark eyes, and glasses. She was in her fairly often from what Minato could see, though he had no reason why she chose to hang around in back-alley cafe that served the odd combination of curry and coffee, but it wasn’t as if he paid enough attention to figure out exactly why. This was about his fifth time observing her. 

He removed his headphones and let them hang loosely around his neck, his mild curiosity making him want to listen to see if she was saying anything. He usually found that hearing the dead was a pain, but if it was only one of them...he could handle that.
