A Dark Song (2016)
Tumblr media
Though there are twists along the way, A Dark Song doesn't have the kind of earth-shattering revelations that demand you see it more than once. And yet, I feel the film will play better on a second viewing. Once you know the ending, youll be able to see how everything along the way adds up. If you’re watching, wondering where it’s headed, don’t worry. It all comes together in time.
Still reeling from the death of her young son, Sophia Howard (Catherine Walker) hires occultists Joseph Solomon (Steve Oram) to help her conduct a series of rituals that will allow her to converse with angels, demons and the dead. For the rituals to work, Sophia has to cleanse herself completely, something that’s easier said than done.
As I watched A Dark Song, much of what I saw just didn’t feel right. When Solomon tells Sophia that they will be isolated for months to perform the ceremonies, that it will include all sorts of sacrifices, purifications, fastings and even some ritual sex, she agrees to it. Once the ritual begins, she frequently questions him. It doesn’t seem to make any sense. She’s the one who sought him out. Why is she resistant to these procedures? Is it because she suddenly has cold feet? That seems likely considering everything she goes through. I know losing a child is probably the worst thing that could ever happen to a mother but even then, this feels excessive. There must be something else going on here. There is but you won’t know what until pretty far into the movie. Once that bit of information is revealed, the whole thing changes. Now, you get it. All the film asks is that you have the patience to get to that point.
This is not a big film by any definition. Most of the action is set inside the isolated house where Solomon and Sophia spend months channeling mystical energies. There are other actors but their roles are almost insignificant compared to the time we spend with these two people. The budget is clearly razor-thin, though the horrors we do see look like a million bucks. The film relies on atmosphere and its writing rather than any sort of flashy moments to leave an impact. The conclusion is delightfully non-Hollywood, which makes it all the more unpredictable. It’s also unexpectedly scary. There are a couple of scenes in the film where writer/director Liam Gavin (their directorial debut) gets under your skin in ways that I’ve seen other, bigger movies try and fail completely.
I wouldn’t describe A Dark Song as a “fun” movie because all of its big scares come right at the end. Until then, it’s the ideas that make you unsettled and uncomfortable. You don’t get scares every 15 minutes like you’re accustomed to getting in bigger films and it demands that its audience pay enough attention to be able to read between the lines. Then, you'll be able to figure out what’s going on inside these people’s heads and really understand what's happening. If that sounds like a lot of effort, it can be at times, but the payoff is well worth it. A Dark Song is a film I know will stick with me. (November 26, 2022)

Trailer Oficial: Love Again
