As I've moved into my 2nd phase of blogging by switching from “Str33t Music” to “Str33t Sounds” a few additional changes have been made:

1. There is no longer an IG account. Please refer to my Twitter and YT for the most active updates.

ARTIST: Natey

BIO:

Singer/producer Natey has such a diverse sound it makes you wonder “what’s next?” on the playlist. And that’s a great thing. Although he is young in his career, his ability and desire to not conform to one style will aid in his longevity in the industry. Despite Natey’s smooth vocals and top notch production, music was not always his first choice nor as skilled at it. He is the embodiment of “hard work pays off”. He may have had a few set-backs over the last few years, but he took matters into his own hands in order to protect his music and create it his way.

Natey is mostly self-taught, however the support from family and friends is another factor that helps bring out his soulful sound. From jazzy beats, r&b, to hiphop you can catch him collaborating with a variety of artists like Domino and Yung Koconut.

I am really tired of the rampant hypocrisy running around. Why are kpop-pop-contemporary-alternative- etc artists and anyone involved in those genres constantly "praised” by the fans and random viewers who ALSO choose to attack other people who are not of those genres/categories (Asians, rappers, mainly non-black persons). How is one more authentic & “less-harmless” than the other?

Concepts like violence, being "gangster", and "acting hard" are not lifestyles created nor solely-owned by American or African-American’s. Violent weapons such as guns (specifically the AK-47) have been widely used & popularized by various countries through media and war for decades. Apparently, that has to be said when it’s not a black person (or Hispanic/Latino). A stereotype many are trying to break away from. It’s interesting since stereotypes of most (east) Asian’s are constantly rooted back towards violent organizations in attempt to be racist & immature- yakuza, samurai, triad, ninja, etc.

Here are 5 points about this topic that needs to be addressed:

SELECTIVE JUDGEMENT

1. First and foremost, I would be a flaming hypocrital POS if I attacked YunB for his song/video and not the kpop artists who use the exact same imagery for their music videos. Keep in mind many of the same kpop artists also enjoy and respect various aspects of hiphop including west coast gangster rap, southern rap, the Italian & Cuban mafia, and overall violently aggressive themes. 

For those who like to push the “South Korean’s are at it again with appropriation” (mainly non-kpop and hiphop fans) agenda- as previously stated, YunB is from New York City, therefore an American. The main issue here is NOT that his origins excuse him of any “inappropriate behavior”, but it’s interesting that based on viewers comments about his music video he should excused from criticism because he isn’t a kpop artist and he’s not a foreigner.

With that in mind. It brings me to my next point about race and ethnicity.

STEREOTYPES 2. I am not one to promote stereotypes, but given society you would think singers perpetrating violent acts would receive much harsher criticism. By harsher i mean a frenzy of offended viewers (I use "viewers" b/c it is rare fans are ever commenting these things) due to their "softer", "safe" and "nice" real-world imagery. Black people are NOT a stereotype. That includes ALL elements of hiphop. Please do not connect thugging and gang-like imagery with a non-black/brown person as "trying to perpetuate black people". UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED BY THE ARTIST/PRODUCER/DIRECTOR. Because YES, then we need to open up a long, helpful and thorough discussion.

BLACK AFRICAN (AMERICAN)  INTEREST IN VIOLENCE 3. Please stop dismissing (on a wider scale) a black-African's portrayal of Italian Mafia and various non-black gangster/mob imagery as acceptable and cool, but feel the need to judge against a non-black persons portrayal of gangster/thug. Yes i understand there are people who portray "black gangsters" with a heavy emphasis on "black", but to associate all forms of gangster/thug imagery with back people is not only very narrow minded, but disrespectful:

GUN OWNERSHIP VS VIOLENT LIFESTYLE 4. Even though my family owns guns “larger” than a standard 9MM and have gone shooting with them I do not care for guns in terms of entertainment in any form of media. Keep in mind movies. That includes Bigbang and Block B's performance. That does not mean I wholeheartedly dislike Bigbang's MADE trailer or any violent movie. I UNDERSTAND the difference between fact and fiction, self-expression through the use of metaphors, satire and generally for entertainment. Therefore I understand the music videos are apart of acting, fantasy and being creative.

TELLING A STORY THROUGH A LENS 5. Music videos are nothing but mini movies, so why are movies often dismissed as works of fiction, with no real connection to the writer, actor or director. Music videos are often criticized as the real-world life of a person. From sexual/dating preferences to overall lifestyle choices. Is it because it is produced on a smaller scale and they feel more personal? Stop acting like it is one thing to have a general say as to how one does filmography and another to totally think the person(s) are not actors and truly want to be or represent that lifestyle. There has always been more than 1 way to create a music video.

GENDER ROLES 6. When the music video was 1st released I saw early comments heavily against Lil Cherry Top’s participation because she is a woman and was major lack of criticism towards YunB I can assume b/c he is a man.  I see this often with female and most notably non-black female individuals. There was a time artists like Beyonce (Sasha Fierce) was criticized for her “hard” imagery. Women being more aggressive in their demeanor is often tied to being a gangster and not just confidence (***Flawless). Though the criticism didn’t last long for Bey most other ladies due to the amount of people who understood it’s just a video/fashion concept (even if there is some truth to it). Some blamed Jay Z for Bey’s alter ego and taking on songs that were not “her norm”. But I digress, I assume most of the people making complaints against Robabank are not old enough to know this.

No shade or ill-will toward anyone. This is my general observation of how we judge a person or product based on “marketing”. My opinion is based on the overall issue of “selective negative judgement” towards said person and product based on what we can see on the outside: race and gender.

ARTIST FEATURE: pH-1 Taking Music Roundtrip

INTRO

Harry “pH-1” Park appears to be the newest rapper on the scene. His affiliations with Owen Ovadoz along with MKIT Rain is no secret, but before the release of “Perfect”, he was mixing it up with the Ktown community via New York. He may be producing a majority of his music in Korean, but international fans are loving his style. With the success of “Perfect” and newly released Sous Chefs “New Wave Attitude” he is expanding beyond the Asian community and infiltrating the west one song at a time.

Long Island//Seoul

Starting a music career in Korea then transcending to the US can be tricky. However, various obstacles could easily be removed by simply focusing on the music itself. The “khiphop” label is a helpful tool for listeners when searching for Korean artists. No doubt it helps promote a certain market, but when it trickles over to Asian-Americans it dismisses the roots for many of them.

Before pH-1 moved to Korea he grew up in Long Island, New York- the epitome of American culture. A hub for multicultural interaction and most importantly education. Despite his American life, many have not taken it into consideration with him nor the company he keeps. His love for his home is prevalent. Most notably his “NY” fitteds that are constantly present in photos, music videos, and his IG lives. But his image is not the only thing on display. His music embeds the love he has for New York and his western way of life, but never falls short to represent his heritage and the new bonds he’s making.

Influence///Execution

It should not come to no surprise how well-rounded and relate-able pH-1’s music really is. You can thank his early childhood experience with musical instruments and the natural love of learning about those who play them. Did he always know it would come in handy? Probably not, but fans are more than thankful it has. 

Like any great artist, pH-1 uses his experience and applies it into his music. Start with “Ooh Aah”. It’s jazz-infused track that’s slightly upbeat with a Jeff Bernat vibe. Next there’s “Wavy”. Slightly reminiscent to the late Barry White, it’s a very chill, hiphop jazz track that has just enough bounce to keep your head bobbing and the car cruising. Listeners can find a array of jazzy tracks on his mixtape ‘15, but don’t let these “smooth jams” fool you. He knows how to turn it up a notch.

Backed up by gospel vocals, pH-1 comes in with his official single that’ll get your foot tapping and shoulders moving. Here he mixes his Christian views with childhood nostalgia of Lego’s into the music video all the while showing his new life in Seoul. And what a better way to do that than bringing in some important people to share that with. The general message of the energetic “Perfect” is a universal ideology that we should be ok as we are, free from prejudice, and to do the things we love. We are all different. It should be respected and celebrated. 

pH-1 further shows his versatility with “Sugoi”. It is a collab with Queens rapper Rekstizzy that’s a fun twist on Korean and Japanese culture while reppin the NY life. It’s produced by LCKSMTH and includes some pretty cool cameos via LA’s Ktown artists. “Sugoi” is one of those songs you need to turn up. Really hear the beat and appreciate the way they handle it. The video itself is pretty entertaining and portrays pH-1 being very comfortable in his element.

What’s Next?

More music obviously. But seriously, if you’ve had a chance to attend a live or two you’ll know a few interesting things as to what pH-1 and Sous Chefs are up to. He posted in his IG stories of a new music video in the works. Although no new details have been made, we can expect it to be another true testament to pH-1 not just as a rapper, but an individual. With his newfound connections and gaining more experience in Korea, listeners should consider being full-time fans. More great things are coming and it’s best to be prepared instead of relying on celeb tweets to get the latest updates on the next hit.

We Might Die Tour- Las Vegas: Everything’s Wrong...

...with radio that is. But before we get into that let’s discuss one of the best concerts I've been to in awhile.

The Good, The Bad, The Weird 

When Transparent Agency announced Las Vegas for their tour I did not care when, where or how much. Str33t Music will be there. Although, I have only been familiar with Dumbfoundead and DJ Zo for 3 years and Year of the Ox (YOX- JL , Lyricks) just under 8 months (Traktivist ) I knew how significant it was to make the show. Las Vegas gets skipped over due to its close proximity to LA and other major cites (with a booming Asian-American population). Chances like these are very rare until society decides to change their “preferences” on what sells. The We Might Die Tour went to over 13 cities from January 25th and ending March 3rd in Kalinokopa, HI. I attended their February 19th show at Vinyl inside Hard Rock Hotel.

The Good

Crowd Pleasers

These men entertained one of the best well deserved crowds that Vegas has to offer. As previously mentioned, Las Vegas gets skipped over a lot and many fans are unable to make the trek to California. The WMDT announcement was so influential on locals I ran into fans who only heard of the artist’s just days before. This may seem insignificant, but the merch booth set-up prior to the show was greatly appreciated. It’s not often there is Transparent Agency merch available outside of concert tours. Fans were able to cop items that were not only awesomely priced, but you can never go wrong with free shit. If you are still needing Dummy merch go check the site before it’s all gone.

Performances

ZO: No DJ? No show. Simple. However, what I love about DJ Zo is he can do more than just set the mood. He rocks houses (pun not intended). Mixing old school with new school with even older school. The fan reacted positively. Younger fans (under 21) sang and danced along to songs I wasn’t sure they’d vibe to. Kudos kids for knowing your shit. I attend various clubs in Las Vegas, and I’m not always impressed. Other club-goers can agree. Moral of the story-don’t doubt Zo when he’s flexing his dj fingers. Can I get a copy of a mix though??

YOX: Year of the Ox may be a lesser known duo across America, but that is partly due to being underestimated in a variety of forms. Although I am new to YOX, I only came across one song I did not know. No worries. I picked up the flow and vibed right along. Hearing “Stampede”, “Hajima”, and “Seven Rings” in person gave a new meaning to their music. Not just as a hiphop fan and concert lover, but finally being able to experience what I’ve been asking for- public performances from Asian-Americans on a larger scale (that isn’t kpop) in Las Vegas. No shade to Soundcloud or Spotify, but it’s one thing to listen in your car and another to see YOX on-stage killin it. This duo effortlessly flows together and I cannot wait for more.

DFD: Now, I’d be a liar if I didn’t’ say I rapped, or at least, tried to rap to over 90% of Dumbfoundead’s songs with as much gusto as my 6 year old with “Coco” or “Hotline Bling”. His performance was a mix of classic and new. Opening up with “Harambe”- it tore through the crowd. The hype was so surreal you’d think the floor would have caved in. YOX coming in with “KBB” and later “Ancestors” is the team effort I was waiting for. He went through We Might Die as expected with passion and, but as much as I love the new music you can never go wrong with the “oldies”. “Korean Jesus” and “Are We There Yet” hittin the nostalgia feels.

Any true fan would pick up the “ya ya ya” hint for Mijangwon (ft Loopy, Nafla and produced by Big Banana: 3 names many will be hearing more of). “Cellphone” (ft Wax, and Breezy Love Joy (now Anderson. Paak) was a pleasant surprise and most welcomed as it is one of the reasons I continued researching Dummy and the rest of the squad 3 years prior.

The interaction with the crowd in-between songs was better than expected and I couldn’t ask for more. Oh wait yes I can. When you hear your neighbor start a chant you better join in even louder than he. The encore with “Banned from the Motherland” is what dreams are made of. Kudos to Transparent Agency.

Despite over 10 cities in the USA and 3 shows in Canada, the artists stayed after the show greeting everyone. Some fans waited more than an hour after shows to get pictures, autographs and give gifts. Artists/companies usually charge for this benefit or do not offer it at all. There are many factors for that reason like. Being in attendance to one of the meet n greets, it is a great dedication to these artists that they provided their fans the opportunity, free of charge.

The Bad 

If the men traveling in a van across the USA, staying at basic hotels and eating basic foods is the worst thing about the WMDT then we’ll gladly take it (no offense Zo). Low-priced tickets a bad thing? Depends on whose side you’re on. And Canada selling out and quickly? That’s bad too. Fans demanding another tour date?  Pretty BAD-ass. And I was left with a sore muscles, scuffed kicks, ringing ear, and a loss of voice for 3 whole days. Worth it.

The Weird

If their antics during their IG lives roadtrip count as weird then consider it a blessing. Lyricks provided great BTS (not Bangtan) footage of their travels during his IG Lives and fans greatly appreciate it. Unless of course, you count the fact that despite selling out shows, adding more, and awesome music you don’t hear any of it on the radio ( www.badrapfilm.com ) as weird then yes. That is very weird.

Overall, the turn-out and social media reactions confirms these dudes not only gave their all to prove they are not rapping in vain, but fans are listening past Soundcloud links and 1 minute IG loops. So that takes us to part 2 of the concert review as to why everything’s wrong with the American radio (article TBA).

Let me introduce you to an acoustic guitar playing musician with soulful vocals & knack for versatility: FUZZZY. Hailing from Los Angeles, CA (Koreatown), Erin “FUZZZY” Kim infuses a refreshing mix of hiphop, soul & funk rhythm into his music. His creative flare has granted him many opportunities to perform and participate in a variety of shows like The Cypher Effect, featured at Da Poetry Lounge 2017, and even an opportunity to audition for season 7 of The Voice.  You can see him further stretching his skills as a vocal coach for BUZZFEED’s "I Trained Like A Kpop Star" and performing at Kollaboration LA & KXFest this past summer.

When FUZZZY isn’t uploading to Soundcloud or performing on stage, you can find him singing freestyles via IG based on fan requests. It’s not often you see a singer encompass freestyles into their routine, much-less accompanied by acoustic guitar. These sessions give a deeper insight into Fuzzzy’s skills not just as a singer, but a writer and musician overall.
