When Feedback Feels Like a Petrol Bomb
Here’s something not widely advertised in the glittering brochures of lifelong learning: in my subject area, around 50% of students come to us via the scenic route of mental health difficulties. That’s not a typo. Half. One in two. Flip a coin and there’s your odds.
Now, this spectrum ranges from a passing bout of stress or a mild brush with depression, right through to the full, flaming inferno of long-term, life-altering mental health conditions. The kind that don’t just knock on the door of your day — they kick it down, throw your keys in the canal, and make sure you’re late for everything, emotionally and otherwise.
And yet, here’s the kicker: students aren’t obliged to tell us anything. Nothing. Nada. Not even a vague heads-up that things aren’t rosy. So we, as assessors, carry on, dutifully evaluating their work like good little pedagogical elves, blissfully unaware that our well-intentioned critique might land like a petrol bomb lobbed into an already-burning building.
“Could you expand on this section?”
BOOM.
“This piece would benefit from a rework.”
KABOOM.
“It’s not quite there yet.”
Mayday. All systems down. Send biscuits.
Of course, sometimes even without the added context of mental health, feedback can be taken as an insult rather than an invitation. We’re human. No one likes being told to go back and do it again — not unless there’s a pay rise involved, or possibly snacks.
But the stakes are higher when someone’s internal world is already teetering. What we see as thoughtful suggestions or constructive nudges can feel, to the student, like soul-shrivelling judgement. And we never know when we’re stepping on that emotional landmine, because the very nature of invisible struggles is… well, they’re invisible.
So what’s the answer? Whisper every comment like it’s a bedtime story? Wrap our feedback in lavender and cross our fingers?
Not quite. But we can remember this: behind every assignment is a person. A whole, complex, messy, brilliant person who might be hanging on by their fingernails. Or who might be perfectly fine today, and flatlined tomorrow. That doesn’t mean we lower our standards — that’s not kindness, that’s condescension. But we deliver critique like we’re passing someone a loaded paintbrush, not throwing a brick.
There’s no perfect way to navigate this, and yes — it would help immensely if students flagged that they don’t cope well with criticism. A little heads-up? Tremendously useful. But let’s be clear: that should not become a get-out-of-jail-free card for handing in dreadful work, behaving badly toward tutors, or demanding special treatment and longer timelines than everyone else. Compassion doesn’t mean abandoning all standards.
And here’s the real mystery: why do people who cannot bear to be critiqued sign up for creative courses, which are, by definition, built on experimentation, failure, reworking, and professional feedback? It’s like volunteering for a cooking show when you cry if anyone questions your soup. I’m not being unkind — I just wish they’d develop a bit more self-awareness. It would save them a lot of anguish. And it would save us a lot of time, treading on eggshells.
Until then, we carry on: walking the tightrope between honest critique and gentle encouragement — paintbrush in one hand, emotional fire extinguisher in the other.
