About Sims 4 Mod Manager
Tumblr media
It came to my attention a few days ago that a popular program used for sorting custom content, Sims 4 Mod Manager, is based on Overwolf software. The issue with this is that ad placements on Overwolf programs give a 20-30% cut to Overwolf directly. As stated on their website. I know it is an Overwolf program because you can find Overwolf files within it:
Tumblr media
Personally, I do not mind un-obstructive ads on free programs as long as they are vetted by the developer, but I do not want to give Overwolf any money. So I will be kindly contacting the developer via the contacts on his website and ask he divest and use a different avenue with the ads. Maybe moving to github instead. He is also recently released a curseforge integrated app.
If you are to request the divestment, please please do so with respect as to invite people INTO the conversation and not put them in a defensive position. No one likes to listen when they are being threatened or harassed. šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø
I know many will be disappointed with this news as it is a great, one of a kind program, so I wanted to offer some alternative methods besides manually sorting custom content:
Sims 4 Mod Assistant: A small app used to find duplicates and mod conflicts. Also supports filtering and moving files to other folders. Available on Mod the Sims and Github.
S4Pavir: It's not that pretty, but it can be used to view, remove, and sort cc. Available on Github.
You can also use sims tray importer to sort through cc. Dress your sims in all the cc you want to remove or place build/buy items on a lot. Save the sim/lot to your library and use Sims 4 tray importer to view the list of cc used, and open its file location to delete. Available on Luniversims (.fr)
Sims 4 Studio can also be used to view, edit, and delete cc. Available here.
Let me know of any other methods you know or notify me if there are any issues with these two programs.
Hopefully there is a positive outcome with reaching out to the creator. Please be respectful and you can use my pinned post as a reference for why curseforge is a problem. šŸ™
Edit:
Update on Sims 4 Mod Manager
After going through the older versions of Sims 4 mod manager I have found out that Version 1.0.9 Beta (Windows 10, 11 for me) does not have Curseforge ads. I think this is suitable option to use the mod manager without giving direct ad revenue to Overwolf/Curseforge.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you go to the Sims 4 Mod Manager site, click other versions and scroll until you find this version. It does not have all the current features, but it works. You can uninstall your current version by searching the app in your start menu (Windows), right click and select 'uninstall', and click 'uninstall' again once you find it in the list that comes up.
(I do not have Mac, so I do not know if the later version 1.1.3 Beta, will also not have ads. If you download it please let me know.) I will update my original S4MM post with this info and also put it in a reblog so hopefully everyone can see this.)
It doesn't have the sort to subfolders option, but my way around that is to sort cc into a "moving folder" and then open your regular file explorer and cut and paste those items to your sub-folder manually. Easy peasy!

My Favorite Games of 2023.
Hi. Hello. Thanks ever so much for clicking on this page. Happy to have you.
First thing's first: I'm a little freak when it comes to video games. I don't feel the need to beat most games I play. From Software is one of my favorite studios in the industry and I've never finished a single one of their games. This means, fortunately, that I get to play a LOT more games than the average bear.
I've written up some blurbs about my top ten favorite games from 2023, but before that here's the list of every game I remember playing this year that left any sort of lasting impact on me (in no particular order):
Dead Space Remake Resident Evil 4 Remake F-Zero 99 Humanity Dredge Metroid Prime Remastered Anemoiaplois Alan Wake 2 Baldur’s Gate 3 LoZ Tears of the Kingdom Counter Strike 2 Hunt Showdown El Paso Elsewhere Jusant Slay the Princess| Remnant II The Finals Street FIghter 6 Lethal Company BattleBit Remastered Don’t Scream Homebody The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog Pizza Tower World of Horror Super Mario Wonder Mr. Sun’s Hatbox Fifa 23 Sea of Stars (Demo) Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update)
And the games I played that were NOT released in 2023:
Unpacking Persona 4 Golden Picross 7 The Order 1886 Shovel Knight Dig Lost Planet: Extreme Condition Spider-Man: Miles Morales Pac-Man Championship Edition DX Project Zomboid Quake LoZ The Minish Cap Drill Dozer Wario Land 4 Pokemon Pinball Resident Evil Revelations Summer of ā€˜58 Trackmania TwinCop We Were Here Visage Cursed Halo CE Half-Life 2 (I probably play this once per year) Witch Hunt Red Dead Redemption 2 Cyberpunk 2077 Borderlands 3 Brutal Legend Cultic Slay the Spire PUBG Rez Infinite Batman Arkham City Alan Wake Alan Wake: American Nightmare Max Payne LoZ: Majora’s Mask 3DS Metroid Prime Metroid Prime 2 Tunic Everhood Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy VII Remake GOODBYE WORLD Yakuza: Like a Dragon Critters for Sale Dome Keeper Phasmophobia Hades Nintendo Switch Sports
Now that you understand the kind of freak you're dealing with…
Let's dive into my top ten favorite games from this objectively fucked up year.
10. El Paso Elsewhere Developed by Texas indie studio Strange Scaffold, El Paso Elsewhere is a Max Payne-clone with vampires, an opinionated narrator, and lots and lots of bullet time. As a small studio punching well above their weight class, Strange Scaffold leans into abstract, PlayStation 1 minimalism when it comes to visuals and pairs them with a soundtrack that will make your hands sweat. The vibes are here and they're ready for the end of the world. I'm personally also a big fan of everything this studio stands for.
Tumblr media
9. Mr. Sun's Hatbox I want you to imagine Metal Gear Solid V. Now I want you to imagine that game as a 2D, level-based, slapstick platformer you can play with up to three friends. If you think that sounds stupid, you'd be right. And it's beautiful. As you build up a secret army of soldiers with various skills (and disorders), you'll start to develop *favorites*. This game constantly asks if you're willing to send those favorites on a harrowing mission and risk losing them forever… or if you'd rather send an idiot you recently captured who blinks constantly and can't kill anyone without fainting.
Tumblr media
8. Dredge Every year I feel like I find one game that falls into the ā€œjust one more roundā€ category, and baby… Dredge was it for 2023. As a weary fisherman in strange waters, you'll make the most out of your 12 measly hours of sunlight only for your daily voyages to inevitably pull you into the darkness of night, and night is when things get weird. Rocks emerge from the fog that you swear weren't there before, your equipment malfunctions, and you're pretty sure you just saw something in the water… something big. Despite only containing a small collection of islands, the world of Dredge manages to feel vast - perhaps vast enough to swallow you whole.
Tumblr media
7. Resident Evil 4 Remake I was curious to see what sort of changes would be made to the timeless classic and father of modern 3rd person shooters, Resident Evil 4. I wasn't let down. RE4 Remake takes all the things that didn't age well about the original, tossed them out, and replaced them with only good things. And MORE things! It's campy, fun, and better than a game of bingo.
Tumblr media
6. Jusant I really feel like this one didn't get the recognition it deserves. Jusant is a rock climbing game that combines the quiet contemplation of Journey with the mechanical specificity of Death Stranding. Unlike Death Standing, though, there is very little story to interrupt your flow. There are plenty of collectible bits to find for those curious to learn more about what happened before the events of the game, but the environmental storytelling does most of the heavy lifting. For me, the joy of the game comes from how it feels. Right trigger controls your right hand grip, and left trigger controls left hand grip. Plan your route, manage your stamina, and climb high above the clouds in search of answers.
Tumblr media
5. F-Zero 99 This. Shit. Slaps. I've never been a big F-Zero guy, but this MADE me one. The ā€œbattle royaleā€, 99 player format is the perfect fit for the ruthless, high octane world of the game. Races last about three minutes, and friend, they are the most intense, white-knuckled three minutes of your life. The decision to make your boost meter the same as your health meter started in F-Zero 64 (I believe), and it is so much more HARROWING in this game when another player could side-swipe you mere meters from the finish line and blow you to bits. Sadly it's only playable via Switch Online, but it made me cheer, laugh, and scream enough this year to earn a spot in my top 5.
Tumblr media
4. Alan Wake 2 Remedy makes weird games that also manage to exist in the AAA space and for that I will forever love them. Although Alan Wake 2 resembles a 3rd person shooter survival horror, I'd honestly say it's more of a narrative game than anything else. There's sidequests, there's puzzles, there's upgradeable skills, but at the end of the day the characters, world, and story are what kept me playing. If you haven't checked them out recently, you should definitely watch a story recap of the original games before diving into this sequel, but the wild swings for the fences this game takes are well worth that small price of admission. There's a god damn musical number, for Christ's sake.
Tumblr media
3. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom I've really got nothing to say about this game that most people don't already know. It's incredible. The fact that Nintendo made a game that redefined an entire genre and then made a SEQUEL to it that ups the ante is remarkable. To be honest, I've only cleared the Rito, Zora, and Goron cities. I got a bit tired of exploring the depths and guiding Koroks to their friends, but I can't deny the sheer level of complexity and polish on display here. I saw someone on TikTok build a functioning Mecha Godzilla in this game. Good God. I've heard that the ending of this game is one of the best in the franchise, and if I'd seen it this year then it may have wound up higher on my list, but for the time being I'll continue picking up this masterpiece from time to time, chipping away at it until the day comes that I can finally smack the tits off thicc Ganondorf.
Tumblr media
2. Half-Life (25th Anniversary Update) I know I'm gonna get shit for this, but I don't care. This year was the 25th anniversary of Half-Life and Valve released an update that made playing it (and it's online Death Match) much more accessible. I threw it on my Steam Deck out of curiosity, expecting to play for 20 minutes. I could not put it down. It is unbelievable how modern this game still feels. I simply had so much fun sprinting through the corridors of Black Mesa with a dozen weapons strapped to my back, blasting aliens and military Spec-Op chumps as a 24(?!) year old theoretical physicist.
Tumblr media
1. Baldur's Gate III This game is fucked up, man. The sheer amount of writing in this game scares me. We can all talk about how BIG this game is, it deserves it, but the thing BG3 does better than any other role playing game I have ever experienced is actually encourage roleplaying. I've played through Act I four times now, with four different groups of friends, and it has felt fresh every time. I have seen the same events play out in so many different ways that it boggles the mind, but in every one of those play sessions I see players asking themselves ā€œWhat would my lil guy do here?ā€ rather than "what is the best thing to do here?" The game rewards players constantly for just trying shit and the D&D 5e rule set means playing like the character you said you were from the start leads to frequent Points of Inspiration. Maybe one day I'll see the end of this story (probably not), but I don't have to in order to feel a connection with BG3's world, characters, and most impressively, the characters I made myself.
Tumblr media
Honorable Mentions for 2023
5. Dave the Diver 4. Homebody 3. Sea of Stars 2. Humanity 1. Super Mario Wonder
Top 5 Favorites NOT from 2023
5. Metroid Prime 4. Final Fantasy VII Remake 3. Cursed Halo (Halo CE Mod) 2. Red Dead Redemption 2 1. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (3DS)

Watching a video essay, basically dealing with the whole curse of "for-profit" software in the creative zone of things, and it's got a section on Flash. The creator made a comment near the end of the section that really resonated with me about how, when Flash got "killed" by Adobe, a lot of animators never really found anything else that worked as well for them, so they just... stopped.
That was me.
I brute force learned how to properly animate in Flash. It wasn't great, but I did manage to make a full 3min narrative animation back in high school (it was my final project for film class) (I had to teach myself everything). And I enjoyed it, to a degree. I mean, sure, I can't listen to the background music I used for it anymore, because I heard it millions of times as I edited, but overall I was proud of what I made. I would've happily gone on to learn more, to better get a grasp on it.
But that was also when Flash got bought by Adobe. Outside of other things in my life, that kind of helped put the nail in the coffin. If I didn't have Flash, then I... didn't really have any means to keep going. So I stopped.
I didn't pick animation or fiddling with it at all back up until 20yrs later when I recently learned how to do animate in Clip Studio.
I know Adobe "resurrected" Flash as "Adobe Animate", but honestly? I feel like it's too little too late. Hilariously, that's the main program the 2D Animation class I was taking used, so it was all stuff that was very familiar to me, but I took the hard road of CSP instead because I, quite simply, didn't want to pay for the subscription. I already have a perpetual license for CSP. I'm not shelling out any more than I have to towards Adobe.
There's no real point to this story time other than to go, "Yeah, they're right -- killing that program killed a lot of creative potential". I hate that in the digital realm, we're kind of beholden to whoever developed the software tools we used. I say "kind of", because there is always piracy, and "dupes" of programs, but at the end of the day, I feel like the point kind of still stands? Especially professionally.
I hate the stranglehold Adobe has on everything so so so much.

Eras: The Beatles | Episode 6 - Now and Then
In the final episode of Eras: The Beatles, we hear the story behind The Beatles' final single Now and Then, including new interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. Narrated by Martin Freeman, the episode also features insight on the new track from Sean Ono Lennon, Olivia Harrison and Peter Jackson.
.
[This episode features more complete audio from the soundbites included in the 'Now and Then' short film/documentary. Under the cut are transcriptions of some of my favorite sections. Including Paul's interpretation of the meaning of 'Now and Then' (bonus points if you guess his answer!)]
PAUL: And then 'Now and Then' just kind of languished in a cupboard and we didn't do anything with it. I kept saying, "You know, maybe we should do something with this, seems a bit—" "Hm, I don't know..." There wasn't a great desire to do anything with it. So it hung around for a while. Years! And every so often, I'd kind of go to the cupboard and think, "There's a new song in there! We should do it! We gotta do it!" But it'd go back in the cupboard.
[...]
PAUL: Peter [Jackson] had sent me a text while he was doing the 'Get Back' thing. He said, "Here's a piece of dialogue of John's that I'd like to use, but George is rehearsing in the background," and you could hear George's guitar and you couldn't really make out quite what John was saying because it was distracting. He said, "But we've got this new technology: Machine Assisted Learning. M.A.L., so we're calling it MAL." Which was like— that was really cool! Because our old road manager and dear friend was Mal [Evans].
[...]
PETER JACKSON: I'd had this idea for two or three years about him [Paul] singing a duet with John. And the fact that we'd developed this software now allows us to separate the voices and the music meant that I could take a song that John and Paul were singing on, just separate John's vocal only, and Paul could have that for playing on stage. And then his band and himself could do the vocals and the playing for the rest of the song. So he could do a duet with John. He didn't even blink, he just said, "That's a fantastic idea, I love it! Let's do it!" And so we quickly turned that around and got that underway. So Paul was now touring with a John Lennon duet on 'I Got a Feeling'.
[...]
PETER JACKSON: I got a phone call from Paul saying, "Is it possible to use that technology for another project I've been thinking about? [...] Would it be possible to take John's vocal and clean it up and get rid of everything else? Because that would allow us to finish this Beatles song." And absolutely, it didn't take me more than about a second to get back to him and say, "Of course we can do it!"
[...]
PETER JACKSON: We assumed that the copy of 'Now and Then' that they were working to in the studio in 1995, where the vocals were coming from, was probably not a first-generation copy. [...] So we though, well this is probably a third generation [tape copy]. [...] And so we contacted Sean Lennon and he was very helpful. And sure enough, we got a digital copy of the original. Which is the same demo, same performance, but two generations better.
[...]
RINGO: I'm sitting there thinking, "I don't remember George doing that solo?" It was just like practicing, maybe. Cus it sounds like George! Then Paul said, "No, it's me." [laughs] But Paul did a great job. I mean, he's very good, you know, Paul. He's a very good musician.
[...]
RINGO: Giles [Martin] had to fly out to LA one day to listen to a four-hour string session that Paul wanted, and then fly back to England! [laughs] There's no string sections in England!
[...]
PAUL: Eventually, when we got to mix number 7 it was, "Wow, this is it! Now it's a Beatle record!" And we played it to various people, some of whom cried. Some of whom said, "Jesus Christ! It's a Beatles record!" But the reaction was very favorable.
[...]
RINGO: The difference from the two tracks of John, the old track of John— you know, we have to thank Sean as well, because he found the original tape. So that's the one you can really hear John, not the copy-copy-copies. And... it's like John's there, you know. It's far out. It's so clear now you know it's him. Cus on the original one we were working to I couldn't tell if it was Paul or John singing half the time. But now you know it's John! [chuckles]
[...]
PAUL: I think it just means 'now and then'. "Now and then, I have a cup of tea". I'm not sure it means an awful lot more than that. But, looking at it from today's perspective, now and then. Then you can start to get all sorts of meanings in. The modern-day, the historical past of the Beatles. It lines up with all of that. But we were always very happy to let people make their own minds up. "Here it is, it's a song. Now, the minute we deliver it to you, it's up to you. You can do anything you want with it." And people do!
[...]
RINGO: And that was what it was like for the three of us when we started this role in the 90s. We had to pretend— it always makes me laugh when I think of it— we had to pretend that he'd gone for a cup of tea or his lunch. But that he was still around. Because it was very strange when we started there's only three of us, after all those years, and all that life, that there were four of us. And I still miss him, man!
[...]
SEAN LENNON: It feels very synchronous that the lyric speaks about time and that it's taken so much time. That it sort of fuses the past and the present. It's like a time capsule. And it all feels very meant to be — or fated, or something — in the nicest sense.
[...]
PAUL: When I remember the Beatles, I remember the joy, the talent, the humor, the love. And I think, if people remembered us for that — for those things — I'd be very happy.

A few days ago, I re blogged a post describing the intense backlash Adobe is getting for certain policies involving permissions with their cloud services, and posted an article citing these agreements lack of changes until recently - and upon thinking on it for a few days, I AM noticing the apparent lack of transparency, especially since they updated those terms. But the lack of trust for Adobe remains true regardless, and further updates on this matter are far more alarming then the initial read. So, definitely try to find other programs then Adobe's products. I'll likely need to search for something myself. Sadly, I am mostly comfortable with photoshop's features, and clip studio does not work in the way that I like or prefer. I'm a user who likely does not spend as much yearly on a sub, since (and I'm not joking) my uncle does indeed work for Adobe as a programmer, and unfortunately has no clout to stop this higher level lunacy from happening. Though I might pay a smaller price tag, it doesn't change the fact that the price for their programs is astronomical. I'll likely keep using it and other software as I don't have many other options that work the way I'd like them to for my process. However some other options are always nice to look up on. Keep in mind, I am an advanced user, and simple photo manip tools are not going to cut it for painting/drawing/and visual development. I am keeping my eye on a few promising options. Thankfully for Photo manipulation and editing, there is plenty of good and free software to use. Some recs for those who can't just get off the burning Adobe Train - use your firewall to protect you from potential spying from their programs. On Windows, you can change these settings directly within your firewall settings. "No problem.
And for those wondering, on Windows both 10 & 11, go to Control Panel > Windows Defender > Advances Options > Manage Outgoing Connections > Add new rule.
From here you'll enter a wizard menu where you can pick and choose programs to block access to."
(credit to @kevinreijnders.bsky.social for this tip). I also suggest not to use the cloud for your file storage, and I rec getting a different storage device for your art files anyway, as you can take it with you anywhere you go with either an external hard drive, or usb memory stick.

2024 Year in Review
If 2023 was a new leaf for me, then 2024 was a year of tying up loose ends. I started off 2024 with multiple unfinished projects that needed wrapping up—more than I like having open at any time.
Canvas Menagerie was entering its 2nd year of development, I was in the midst of finishing Asphodelium—which was supposed to be a Winter Jam 2023 project—and a separate Winter Jam 2022 project, Lost Lune, that only had a partial amount of progress made on it. Suffice to say, I was somewhat in over my head with unfinished games.
I’m the type that is self motivated while working, but I can get overwhelmed when I have several projects in progress (including game dev, marketing, IRL, etc). So, clearly I needed to actually finish some things, even though my games were just hobby projects.
…But, I also had to start some new projects. An idea I’ve had for a while was an otome sequel to Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea, something I told myself I wouldn’t make unless I could get a writer and artist to help me with it. Well, guess what my Otome Jam 2024 project was…
In February I set up a new side website—Arimia’s Doujin Den! It’s a little blog for me to share the doujin fan games I’ve collected over the years, many of which no longer have any internet presence at all. It takes a lot of passion and dedication to make an indie game but maybe even a touch more for a fan game, and I don’t want that passion to go to waste. I’ve only catalogued a few so far, but I want to do even more in the future.
However, about halfway through 2024 I was laid off from my software development job very suddenly. I was partially expecting for months to be laid off at any point as the company has lay offs every single month, but it was still incredibly sudden. I had hoped to at least make it through to the end of the year, not only half the year!
I also began doing social media work for Studio Everium, an indie otome studio. I’ve only ever worked at Studio Ɖlan for marketing (and this marks my 5th year there!) so it’s been a fun change of pace to help share even more visual novels to the world. Speaking of Ɖlan, I spent a few weekends this year traveling and attending conventions! We had booths at Offkai Expo and Otakon, where we sold our yuri games and met a lot of fans & fellow developers. It was my first time going to a convention outside of Memphis and was so fun to finally meet so many friends (and make new ones).
At the tail end of the year, I finished rereading Umineko in October (on the 5th, of course), which I hadn’t read since….middle school. It was such a refreshing reread, to not only read something made with so much love for the world but also to confirm that it was just as good—even better, with fresh eyes on the queer narrative—than I remembered. Anyway, that’s what led me to get back into reading novels. I wanted to see some of r07’s inspiration for it, so I picked up And Then There Were None and dived into several other of Christie’s tales, which led me to joining an in-person book club (where all of the members could be my parents/grandparents…!) to force myself to get out more.
Projects
Canvas Menagerie
Tumblr media
My main goal for 2024 was to finish writing Canvas Menagerie, but my secret internal goal was to finish the entire game—and I did! Just a couple of weeks ago I managed to release it to the world after 3 years of solo development. It’s not exactly what I envisioned it being when I started outlining it (and I definitely chunked and rewrote my outlines several times), but I’m still happy with how it came out.
I’m also happy to finally have a commercial game out that doesn’t have my writings & art from early college (that’s practically high school…!!). It’s something I’ve been somewhat self conscious about for a few years—to be honest, I don’t like my prior commercial works. I can only look at them and cringe somewhat, knowing how old the writing and art is. Now I finally have a commercial project I’m (mostly) proud of.
The final game ended up being 138k words with 15+ CGs and 10+ character sprites. I did all of the work on the project, outside of the backgrounds, music, and GUI design. I’m thankful for all of the people who supported the project to the end!
I was also able to do a lifelong goal—have a physical release for one of my games!
Tumblr media
These were handmade by myself. I think they came out pretty cute~
Asphodelium
Tumblr media
My other main goal for 2024 was to finish and release Asphodelium. Well, about that….
I did end up finishing it, releasing it in January. That version was right at 40k words long with 1 story line and 2 slightly different endings. But, well… I wanted to do more with it!
I got several extremely positive comments after releasing it and I loved writing Aster & Hazel’s push-and-pull relationship, so I started secretly working on an expansion afterwards. The main story already covers a lot of ideas regarding cults, but I wanted to expand upon it even more. There’s plenty more aspects I want to touch on such as the depersonalization cult members experience and the idea of self identity after leaving a cult. It’s a completely different vibe from the comfyness of Canvas Menagerie, to say the least!
I’m currently aiming to make it a full commercial release sometime in the first half of 2025 by adding a new story path (with at least a couple of new endings), at least 25k more words, and several new CGs. I’ve already written 14k words and drawn 2 new CGs, so it’s progressing smoothly. This will be the main project I’m working on going into 2025.
Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea: Amaranthine Moon
Tumblr media
As mentioned before, I couldn’t go the entire year without starting a new long-term project of course. I began preparing as soon as Asphodelium was out the door to attempt a sequel to my 2021 fantasy mystery visual novel Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea. I say ā€œattemptā€ as I went into the planning phase sure that I would only make it if I was able to find solid partners to make the projects with—after all, I had enough projects to work on solo! It’s been years since I directed a project without my writing and art, so I wanted to give it a shot again.
I was lucky to find Runa Winters to helm the writing based off of my terribly shoddy outline & character notes, Iron to edit it into a cohesive narrative, and Dule to bring the colorful cast to life. Together, we were able to get a demo out and also later get featured on the IGN YouTube as part of the Dames 4 Games Fall Showcase!

Witch You Want
Tumblr media
Over at Ɖlan, in September we wanted to try something new—a game jam! Several of us had already entered game jams in the past (and I had just finished a game jam—more on that later), so we thought it’d be a good way to rejuvenate ourselves and our creative juices.
I lead a team with Natasha Luna providing her wonderful writing and Dani creating our own magic with their lovely illustrations. The premise is simple—a local witch desperately needs help making enough potions for the festival that weekend. She’s just, like, only slightly incompetent and ditzy. Slightly.
We made the game in under a month alongside 3 other yuri visual novels from the game jam. I did all of the programming, with some outside assistance from Feniks. I think it turned out pretty cute!
Dahlia
Tumblr media
Around April I got the itch to join a game jam (we hadn’t decided to do an internal jam at Ɖlan quite yet) and became interested in the Velox series of jams. They’re Ludum Dare-inspired visual novel game jams which is absolutely perfect for me. I got my start making games with Ludum Dare, as a bunch of my first visual novels were Ludum Dare entries. They taught me how to actually make a game from start to finish and set deadlines for myself.
I entered Velox Formido, which was by far the strictest game jam I’ve ever entered. You have 36 hours to make a visual novel. Still, somehow I was able to make a story with 2 character sprites and multiple endings in the time frame. I think it came out rather nice, as the art direction came out exactly as I imagined.
Starlit Regrets
Tumblr media
After entering Velox Formido, I found I really liked the format and was eager to enter the next in the series. In August they held Velox Fabula 2, a 10 day long version of the jam. This gave me a lot more room to work with my idea—maybe a bit too much!
Starlit Regrets is a melancholic story focused on reminiscing and letting the player guide the narrative, both the past and present. It has quite a few different scenes in it depending on choices and 5 endings over 15k words long (I don’t know how I was able to churn out that much in such a short time)! Most of my long visual novels are very linear, so it’s fun to try branching narratives for my shorter games.
Articles
Continuing from last year, I interviewed other visual novel developers! I was lucky to have Katelyn from GB Patch Games, Gabby from Two and a Half Studios, and Tony & Abby from Black Tabby Games all sit down with me in 2024 to talk about their visual novels and how they approach the medium.
Tumblr media
Interviewing other developers is still a bit nerve-wracking for me, but it always turns out to be a fun and informative experience.
After getting home from Offkai Expo, I wrote up an overview of our (wonderful) experiences as well as some takeaways from it. We had a great time selling there, but it’s not something that can easily be replicated…!
Tumblr media
And continuing from last year’s article looking over Mahoyo’s very questionable marketing campaign, I took a look at both Mahoyo and Tsukihime remakeā€˜s approach to visual direction. So no badmouthing Aniplex this time, but instead praising Type-Moon’s art direction.
Tumblr media
My last blog post for the year was also partially a postmortem for Canvas Menagerie. I’ve been on a lot of projects in varying states of being finished, so it was a big relief to finally finish my 3 year long project. I hope it’ll help other developers push themselves across the finish line…!
Tumblr media
Art
Tumblr media
This year I did a lot of art assets! 4 of the images here are in-game assets and 4 are promotional artworks for the games.
I also participated in Umitober this year, an Inktober-inspired month-long art event where you draw Umineko arts based on different themes each day. Most of my submissions were sketches as I wanted to just try a bunch of different poses and focus on quantity over quality—the best way to get better is to draw a lot, so I used it as pose practice.
Goals
2024 Goals:
Fully write Act 3 of Canvas Menagerie: This was the lite version of this goal. I actually wanted to fully finish the visual novel but didn’t want to overshoot, as I was still working a full time job. Suffice to say I cleared this goal with flying colors.
Release the full version & an artbook for Asphodelium: I actually forgot I was going to release an artbook with the original release… Well, I hope I’ll release one with the extended cut next year. I made an artbook for Canvas Menagerie which was a lot of fun, so I want to do it again.
Go to an out-of-town convention: I’ve never been to an anime convention outside of Memphis…until now! I was able to travel to Offkai Expo and Otakon this year which was so amazing.
Share more VNs I like: I was able to do this as well! I’ve started sharing my favorites from Spooktober after the event as well as cataloguing some of the doujin games I own on Neocities. It’s fun to be able to share some of the visual novel gems I’ve played.
2025 Goals:
Release the extended version for Asphodelium: In January I released the ā€œfullā€ version of Asphodelium, but as mentioned I want to extend it even more. This edition isn’t too far from being done, so I hope to release it in the first half of 2025.
Release Crimson Waves on the Emerald Sea: Amaranthine Moon: CWES: AM has had a lot of progress on the writing front, so I need to get back to scripting it…! We were originally thinking of releasing it Q1 2025 but want to give it more time in the oven. It’s only been in development for half a year as of now, so a later 2025 release would be great.
Fill an entire sketchbook: I have a sketchbook from 2 years ago I started for doing pose practice and this year I want to finally fully use the sketchbook with practices. Not full arts—just practicing everything.
Get back to kanji studies: I feel like this is a goal for a lot of people, hah. Given how often I try to navigate JP websites and play JP games, I need to get back to learning JP!
Document more doujin games: One of the hobbies I started in 2024 was archiving doujin games I have, as many don’t have any documentation online anymore. This is still a side project of mine, but I want to continue blogging about doujin games (namely fangames) and sharing these gems.
2024 certainly had a lot of ups and downs and changes and curveballs. Looking back on it, it was a better year for me than I thought it would be (and remember it being). I was able to finally travel on my own, meet so many friends, try new things, and find new joys.
I’m very nervous going into 2025 as my first year being a fulltime freelancer. I’ve got some cushions set in place, but it’s still a bit nerve-wracking. Now that I’m no longer in my early 20s, things are changing—but in a way, I’ve been finding myself through it. I want to be in visual novels for many more years to come. I love making visual novels, playing visual novels, talking about visual novels. I want to spend time with my friends, flying out to see them and going to conventions where I’m able to meet even more amazing people.
I hope this year will be kind to us all. Cultivate the space you want to live in and help the people you care about.

What's up? - Spring 2025
Tumblr media
Hi all, I'm back with a new seasonal recap!
As planned, this Spring, I've been able to focus my work on the VN Project (called Project 2 in the previous recaps, but I'll giving it a more transparent codename lol). I've also taken on a short job in April, taking some time off my plate, and might continue to do so in the following months to help me have some income and fund our work.
Let's get to it!
Development - VN Project
Most of my work this season was focused on "Project 2", which is, as shared on our social media, a visual novel (VN) project! I've worked on the full scenario, with a more detailed pass on the first chapters. I've started writing the first bits of the game itself, in both English and French to lay some groundwork.
I've reviewed the softwares we could use to develop it and chose to go with Ren'Py, an engine specialized in VNs but also friendly to people without a developer background. Indeed: I am taking on a developer role for this one! I've been learning the ropes of the engine, from basic functions such as dialogue, images, and audio implementation to adding a working translation or making a shareable build.
Since it will involve a lot of 2D art, I've started organizing about how to work with artists on this project. A lot will depend on the funding and time we'll have on our respective ends, but we are excited by this project building on plenty of what we've created so far. In the meantime, I'll be working with placeholder assets, some of which I'm making on my own.
Studio
We wrapped up our first fiscal year this Spring! It was a learning experience for me as well, with the review of our first annual accounts.
On the media side, we have completely left Twitter, since the worrying management of this social platform, their push of the use of GenAI despite the myriad of ethical, financial and environmental issues of this technology, and the hurtful politics defended by its most prominent figure were clearly not resonating with our own values and work. We are now focusing our efforts on our Bluesky and our Supporter Discord, with our Tumblr and Ko-fi still being updated as I see fit. (And when I have time for them!) You can check out all of our running socials on our Linktree.Ā
Please note I will remain vigilant about how social media evolve in their implementation of GenAI. I do not wish to have our creative blood and sweat stolen to train these models (or at least limit this as much as I can), so I will continue to make decisions on where and how we communicate online accordingly.
Funding
These last few days, I've been spending some time on checking the possibilities we have for the remainder of 2025, from public to private funding. So far, I've managed to self-fund our work, and I'm keen on seeing how far I can continue to do this. I have also been learning about asset valuation, since all the work I have put into the projects so far has been on my time, without compensation from the company.
Events
I will be at Game Camp 2025 (in Lille, France)! I had a wonderful experience there the past two years so I'm excited to return. If you ever wanna meet there, feel free to reach out.
Outro
That's all for this Spring! Thank you for your support everyone and have an excellent Summer.
Cheers,
-Drad

How to Build Software Projects for Beginners
Tumblr media
Building software projects is one of the best ways to learn programming and gain practical experience. Whether you want to enhance your resume or simply enjoy coding, starting your own project can be incredibly rewarding. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get started.
1. Choose Your Project Idea
Select a project that interests you and is appropriate for your skill level. Here are some ideas:
To-do list application
Personal blog or portfolio website
Weather app using a public API
Simple game (like Tic-Tac-Toe)
2. Define the Scope
Outline what features you want in your project. Start small and focus on the minimum viable product (MVP) — the simplest version of your idea that is still functional. You can always add more features later!
3. Choose the Right Tools and Technologies
Based on your project, choose the appropriate programming languages, frameworks, and tools:
Web Development: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, or Django
Mobile Development: Flutter, React Native, or native languages (Java/Kotlin for Android, Swift for iOS)
Game Development: Unity (C#), Godot (GDScript), or Pygame (Python)
4. Set Up Your Development Environment
Install the necessary software and tools:
Code editor (e.g., Visual Studio Code, Atom, or Sublime Text)
Version control (e.g., Git and GitHub for collaboration and backup)
Frameworks and libraries (install via package managers like npm, pip, or gems)
5. Break Down the Project into Tasks
Divide your project into smaller, manageable tasks. Create a to-do list or use project management tools like Trello or Asana to keep track of your progress.
6. Start Coding!
Begin with the core functionality of your project. Don’t worry about perfection at this stage. Focus on getting your code to work, and remember to:
Write clean, readable code
Test your code frequently
Commit your changes regularly using Git
7. Test and Debug
Once you have a working version, thoroughly test it. Look for bugs and fix any issues you encounter. Testing ensures your software functions correctly and provides a better user experience.
8. Seek Feedback
Share your project with friends, family, or online communities. Feedback can provide valuable insights and suggestions for improvement. Consider platforms like GitHub to showcase your work and get input from other developers.
9. Iterate and Improve
Based on feedback, make improvements and add new features. Software development is an iterative process, so don’t hesitate to refine your project continuously.
10. Document Your Work
Write documentation for your project. Include instructions on how to set it up, use it, and contribute. Good documentation helps others understand your project and can attract potential collaborators.
Conclusion

Tumblr media
Understanding the Fundamentals of Photography
Before delving into advanced techniques, it’s crucial to grasp the basic principles that underpin great photography. These fundamentals include exposure, composition, and lighting.
1. Exposure
Ā Ā  Exposure dictates the lightness or darkness of your photo and is managed through three primary camera settings: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. The aperture regulates the size of the lens opening, influencing the depth of field. Shutter speed controls the duration the camera’s sensor is exposed to light, affecting motion blur. ISO gauges the sensor's sensitivity to light. Properly balancing these elements is crucial for achieving the ideal exposure and capturing the intended mood and details in your photographs.
2. Composition
Ā Ā  Composition involves the strategic placement and arrangement of elements within your frame. Effective composition guides the viewer’s eye and enhances the visual impact of your photos. Techniques such as the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing can help create more dynamic and engaging images. The rule of thirds involves dividing your frame into nine equal parts and placing key elements along these lines or their intersections. Leading lines draw the viewer’s attention to the subject, while framing uses natural elements to highlight the main subject.
3. Lighting
Ā Ā  Lighting is one of the most crucial aspects of photography, as it affects the mood, texture, and clarity of your images. Natural light, such as the golden hour (the hour after sunrise and before sunset), provides a warm, soft glow that can enhance your photos. For indoor photography or controlled environments, artificial lighting like studio lights and reflectors can help you achieve consistent results. Experimenting with different lighting sources and techniques will help you understand how to use light to your advantage.
Developing Photography Skills
Once you’re familiar with the fundamentals, focusing on developing specific photography skills will elevate your work. Here are some key skills to focus on and develop:
1. Focus and Depth of Field
Ā Ā  Mastering focus and depth of field involves controlling which parts of your image are sharp and which are blurred. Use your camera’s autofocus system or manual focus to ensure your subject is crisp and clear. Experiment with different aperture settings to achieve varying depths of field, from a completely sharp image to a soft, blurred background.
2. Understanding Color and White Balance
Ā Ā  Color theory and white balance are crucial for capturing accurate and visually appealing images. Understanding how different colors interact and affect each other can help you create harmonious photos. White balance adjustments ensure that colors appear natural and true to life, regardless of the light source.
3. Post-Processing Techniques
Ā Ā  Post-processing is the art of editing your photos to enhance their quality and correct any issues. Familiarize yourself with software like Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop to adjust exposure, color, and sharpness. Learning basic editing techniques will help you refine your images and bring your creative vision to life.
Practice and Experimentation
To truly excel in photography, regular practice and experimentation are crucial. Embrace the opportunity to experiment with new techniques, explore various subjects, and engage in creative projects. Evaluating your own work and obtaining feedback from others can offer valuable perspectives and support your ongoing growth as a photographer.

They get you used to hard work, verbal communication, and timely work — all essential no matter what career path you later end up in.
Finance, Admin & Operations
Commerce and business graduates will find many opportunities in Chennai’s finance and corporate services sector. Banks, consultancies, and backend offices of large firms are always on the lookout for fresh talent to fill roles in accounting, data processing, admin support, and more.
These positions can serve as the groundwork for building a career in finance, business analysis, or management over time.
Media, Content, and Digital Careers
The creative ecosystem in Chennai has been steadily developing over the past couple of years. Digital marketing agencies, content studios, YouTube channels, and design companies are always on the lookout for new content creators, social media managers, video editors, and graphic designers.
If you're a fresher with good creative skills, a good portfolio, or even just an active blog or Instagram account — you may already possess what it takes to begin.
Education and EdTech
With its high-learning environment, Chennai is also an ideal location to begin a career in teaching or education services. EdTech websites, schools, and training schools recruit freshers as tutors, content writers, coordinators, or counselors.

Today was just another day on campus, and it seems like it will be that way from now on. Here's a rundown of my day:
Morning classes:
Operations research: The professor covered an entire chapter at lightning speed. Usually, I strive to absorb 90% of the material in class so I can delve deeper into it later. But today, I could only manage to grasp about 20% because I couldn't focus, and the teacher was racing through the content.
Evening classes:
Mobile development on Android Studio: Once again, the teacher bombarded us with loads of information that went right over my head. Now I have to tackle it all on my own at home.
Software projects development: This class was surprisingly enjoyable, but it also introduced a ton of new information that I need to review and study again.
The problem is, when I get home around 7pm, I barely have any time to study. By the time I change, take care of my skincare routine, and eat, it's already 8:30pm.
Upon reflection, I've realized that I lack a consistent routine, and my mental health needs often distract me. I also neglect basic self-care, like drinking enough water and having proper meals throughout the day.
To address these issues, I've set some small goals for myself:
Drink at least 1.5 liters of water every day.
Actually eat substantial meals. Eat properly instead of surviving on a single cookie without any water. Am I trying to kill myself? Definitely not.
Study for at least one hour every day.
Try to establish a routine thatworks for me best.
I wasn't even planning on making this post, but I made a promise to myself to be consistent, and I intend to keep that promise.
