hospitals are houses of death and disease; they’re sterile, cold, and unwelcoming, and they're haunted by bad omens. it’s not that grant can’t do this alone–of course he can, this isn’t his first rodeo–but he’d rather not. shannon is just down the hall in the lobby but yet he's filled with an unshakeable sense of loneliness. päivi understood his fear of these morgues more than anyone else. lived experience leads to wisdom and she is the first person he’s known in a long time to have any real, personal comprehension of illness. but now he cannot even speak of his fears to her, for the days of compassion and love and camaraderie are long gone.

so instead, he will sit here alone and face whatever verdict comes his way with what bravery he can muster.

grant tries to push the haunting thoughts from his mind but stirs in his discomfort, wringing his hands, squeezing his eyes shut to protect them from the sunlight, and rhythmically swinging one leg back and forth over and over until each time his heel clicks against the hard plastic of the exam table’s railings.

he tries, he really does, but he is no good at finding peace.

the person who promised him she’d never leave, no matter what was wrong with him or what he needed to do or where he needed to go to to restore some semblance of health, abandoned in in the end anyway.

being alone is just another thing he'll have to get used to again.

“i just want you to be okay. or as okay as you can be. i know what it’s like. you already have your whole family to rely on but i'm here, too. i won’t leave you because of this.”

perhaps she hadn’t been entirely honest with him. knowing what it’s like will never prevent someone from changing their opinion. maybe it was too much: the abrupt health crisis and the subsequent chaos and fallout of said news. his life has never been the same since, but she chose to alter her own for him.

so maybe it was him. he wouldn't blame her if she somehow found him to be a burden after the last year. if grant were a gambling man, he'd still place a bet on that being the reason. or maybe it's not him and she only regrets her decisions to alter her life for him.

or maybe–just maybe–he’ll never know her reasons and pondering further it is a waste of his time.

grant has wasted enough of his time in life with pointless self-destruction. and he cannot cope with his own habitual rumination anymore, not when it's killing him.

this time he will have to find peace. he’ll force it if he has to.

their relationship is over. it’s done. there is nothing left to do but accept reality.

a quick knock at the door signals the arrival of his doctor, so grant sighs and straightens himself up, aiming to appear as cobbled together and presentable as possible.

And one night the reader comes across a FLYING cockroach in her apartment and starts screaming and Jay helps her get rid of the insect. ]

You didn’t hate Jay Halstead. No, he was just the annoying guy from two doors down that frequently got on your nerves. First off, you met in the Med ED when one of his friends got brought in. That first interaction alone was horrible.

He tries to tell you (a doctor) how you should take care of his friend (a police officer) and you guessed it, Jay was also a police officer. No medical training whatsoever. But he one upped you, went over your head and got his brother to take over the case.

That was just the beginning of it all. Ever since then it’s like he was always there to push buttons. He never took his laundry upstairs in a normal time. You’d go down to put a load in and his clothes would be in the washer.

You of course didn’t dare move them instead leaving a note on his door telling him to ‘finish your fucking laundry’ which sure he listened to, placing the same note back on your door with a thud as he carried his now dry basket of clothes into his apartment.

Not only that but he always, always, managed to park just a little over the line in the parking lot which at the right time made parking nearly impossible. And since it was assigned parking it wasn’t like you could just move somewhere else. Though you did get your karma a couple times.

Parking as close to his driver side door as possible so he’d have to do gymnastics to get in the vehicle. Always earned you a sharp glare when you passed in the hallway.

He was as fed up with it as you were but that didn’t stop him from parking like an asshole. Like tonight. When he parked slightly crooked over the line and you just so happened to be pulling in behind him.

With a bite of your tongue you did what you always did, pulled up nice and snug to his truck and got out, shooting him an innocently sweet smile as you locked the doors and headed inside.

If looks could kill you’d be dead on the ground right now but that didn’t matter. All you wanted to do was get inside, take a shower and go to bed.

The elevator upstairs was taking forever and by the time it was coming to the ground floor Jay had made his way inside and next to you.

The silence was full of tension as the doors opened, a young couple walking out with their dog, breezing past. Jay shockingly let you inside first, following and stepping to the side with the buttons and signaling to be brought up.

“Was that necessary?” His voice cut the silence as he kept his gaze on the numbers changing above the door.

You rolled your eyes, leaning against the opposite corner, “Don’t park like a dick and that wouldn’t happen,” you replied with a shrug, watching as he shook his head just slightly. The door opened seconds later and the two of you split towards your apartments.

His was just down from yours and completely bare compared to the floor mat outside of yours. The rainbow ‘welcome!’ Sign had seen better days but you didn’t mind its wear and tear as you went inside, shedding the outdoor layers the were a necessity in the cold of Chicago.

Your next stop was the bedroom for clothes and then the bathroom to shower. Which you basked in, the warmth of the water holding you in longer than you wanted it to.

As it grew slightly later you moved to the kitchen, deciding to make something small for dinner before something buzzed by your ear.

Absentmindedly you swatted it away, continuing on with the food making before whatever it was, landed on your arm, pulling a loud scream from your mouth, brushing it off quickly and pulling back against the wall.

Your eyes followed it around the room, the door to your apartment flying open, “Are you okay?” Jay nearly tripped coming inside, his eyes zooming around the entrance to your apartment.

The bug landed on the counter, a whine leaving your mouth before you looked up at the man that usually you’d hate seeing but right now we’re so thankful for. Shakily you pointed at the counter, “There’s a bug.”

Part of you was embarrassed but the way his shoulders relaxed as he stepped further into the kitchen made you feel the slightest bit better. “Seriously? You screamed bloody murder over an insect?”

“First of all, it landed on my arm. Second of all, you’re the one that came barreling in over it.” You rolled your eyes, arms tightly wrapped around you. Bugs were the last thing you liked dealing with. You could do blood, pus, vomit. All the nasty doctor stuff.

But not bugs. “I thought you were hurt.” Jay sighed, looking around. “Where are your paper towels?” He asked, following the line of view where you pointed again.

With a sigh he ripped one off the roll, slowly going towards it. “Wait don’t kill it-“ Jay faced you.

“What?”

“He’s just a bug, he doesn’t deserve to be killed just because I hate him and want him gone.” You slightly stepped forward, reaching into the cupboard above the sink, trying so hard not to disturb the winged insect.

Jay raised his eyebrows, “So the bugs a he now?” He teased, watching as you grabbed a glass and handed it to him.

“Shut up, just, get him so you, I, we, whatever can get him the hell out of here.” You spoke quickly, Jay raising his hands up in defense before placing the glass over the bug.

He turned to you once more, “Now what? You have paper just lying around?” His words were sarcastic but in actuality you did.

You brushed past him, grabbing a page from the magazine you had on your living room table, ripping it out and handing it to him. “That work?”

Jay nodded faintly, “Yeah..” He took it, successfully trapping the bug in the cup as he lifted it. “I’ll let him out the window,” The man offered, walking to the living room where you pulled a window and its screen open for him.

Once it was gone you took the cup from him, a light smile on your face, “Uh, thank you.” You muttered, walking away quickly to the kitchen to wash it out. Whether it touched it or not that glass was tainted.

“Yeah, no problem. Hey, next time try not to scream like you’re getting killed unless you’re actually getting killed.”

“Oh yeah I’ll do my best.” You rolled your eyes once more, glancing over at him. “No promises though. I hate bugs,” You added, flipping the cup over to let it dry.

Jay nodded faintly, “Well, you know where I am if you need an exterminator.” You shot him a look, “Or remover.” He tagged on before giving you a soft smile, “I’ll see ya.”

With that he left and you couldn’t help but look at the door when he was gone. Maybe he wasn’t that horrible of a guy.

actually good cleaning hacks from someone who’s been through some shit

Get a steam mop I don’t care how much it is or cheap, just get one

if you have a pet invest in a wet dry vacuum, you will thank me.

get cleaning cloths you actually like the feel of, if you hate microfiber get a cheap set of tea towels and use them instead. Or chop up a dead tee shirt and use that.

plug in vacuums are 2x more powerful than non-plug in vacuums. You trade sucking power for mobility with cordless, so think that over when you get one.

buying a cheap mop every time one gets moldy is cheaper than having to deal with any mold you get from using a moldy mop.

invest in disinfectant/antifungal/antiviral/antibacterial liquid for your laundry, because that stuff makes getting rid of moldy musty musky shit easy. And it cleans your cleaning cloths without getting them greasy or soapy.

to fix “I accidentally left my clothes in the washing machine too long now they smell like mold” thing, you will need antifungal laundry liquid and the literal sun. Wash your clothes on the hottest setting you can with your clothing materials in mind, add the antifungal before you start, let it go for like 2 hours. And put it in the sun to dry. Repeat if it still smells moldy, until it doesn’t anymore, works like a charm!

to clean crystalline dog piss, you will need water, a steam mop, a wet dry vacuum (depending on if it’s in a carpet) dog cleaning spray or vinegar. Basically , rehydrate the piss, clean it up with dog spray or HOT vinegarish water, grab a steam mop and steam it (if not on carpet) and viola it should be okay now.

If it’s in the carpet you will need to rehydrate the piss, then just dowse the piss with water, use the wet dry vacuum to suck up the water, repeat until water comes up clean. Use whatever pet cleaner that’s good on your carpet to get the smell out, Patch test it in the corner of the carpet before you do it on the piss spot, soak up and remaining water from the carpet until it’s dry or blow dry it if you have to. And tada you have a cleaner carpet! The same works for dog shit too.

drain snakes are your best friend if you don’t remember to get the hair out the drain.

have one sponge for wiping down the sink and one for washing your dishes, because sometimes it’s easier to use a sponge to wipe down the sink than a cleaning cloth.

You can put sponges in the dishwasher and it cleans them REALLY WELL, do it everyday if you can.

Invest in a good glass cleaner for glass because when it gets greasy it’s hell.

Koh cleaner will literally cut through grease and oil, and fat. Like it wasn’t even there, if you don’t have the money white vinegar and bi-carbs does the same thing. Though be careful because it’s reactive and might destroy your countertop or pots, just invest in koh your life won’t be the same. (I can clean all the grease off things, that’s how good it works. Plus it doesn’t smell!!!)

Replace your toilet cleaner every 3 months, or make sure you don’t let it fester. That’s more of a hassle than replacing it every now and then.

Get a good dish soap, because you can use it for everything because of how mild it is.

After mopping always steam mop otherwise it will always be streaky or tacky, idk why but steam mops fix this 9/10 times.

Thoughts on this video on the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone and also the article that it cures which claims the Yellowstone narrative is factually inaccurate?

Okay so this video:

was posted in late 2020 and BOY HOWDY is it a wild ride. Because I need a distraction and am feeling particularly petty right now I'll see if I can break down the video and it's... um... "facts".

Before I start though the dudes YouTube is chock full of extreme vegan takes so I wouldn't say he's the top tier candidate for good sources lol.

"Introduction"

The beginning is meh. Y'know the usual thing some Youtubers do with the whole "is this really true???" thing with unreasonable amount of suspicion? yeah. He pretty much makes comments on how maybe the reintroduction of wolves into YNP wasn't the "incredible success story that it was made out to be." Which I feel like the, y'know, the many hundreds of research papers on the wolf reintroduction into YNP and the massive benefits it's created kinda contradicts? but I mean what do I know.

"Yellowstone narrative is misleading"

So this part opens up with this video (which I don't feel like watching rn if I were being honest so I'll save that for later) that blew up a bit ago regarding how wolves change rivers, and the claim that it was misleading, untrue, etc. The youtuber (who we shall call Hancock because "Youtuber" will get boring) uses this source to stake the claim that the positive impact wolves have had on rivers in YNP isn't true.

As we would know if we actually did research and didn't talk out of our ass, wolves didn't directly affect the rivers just by hunting elk, but beavers as well. Aspen and willow are, surprise surprise! a favorite food of beavers. Prior to wolf reintroduction riverbeds and waterways in YNP were in terrible shape, mainly due to erosion and lack of support from water loving plants, which are... tada! willow and aspen! Beavers and elk chowed down on these plants in huge amounts due to their numbers being so vastly out of control due to lack of predators. So when wolves came around and started hunting the plentiful beavers and elk, the willow and aspen were basically like "oh shit! we aren't being eaten to the point where we're all dying!! lets grow more!!" and in turn the more willow and aspen = more footing for the soil along waterbeds which means the rivers were saved. Some of this was mentioned in the article that was linked but wasn't mentioned by Hancock so idk what's up with that.

To sum it up, wolves made an impact! And it's silly to just write that off completely!! I think my issue with this part is that Hancock completely writes wolves impact on the environment off, which is frankly ridiculous. The original video may have overstated it a bit, but it's not like it doesn't exist.

"The balance of ecosystems"

Hancock then talks about the complexity of the YNP food chain (kinda), and how some people feel the need to restore the balance in nature if we humans fuck it up which?? like yeah?? we should?? He goes into a schpeel about values or whatever and if we value certain ecosystems over others??? Idk I was NOT tracking.

He mentions his thoughts on "which balance is best for the animals that live there". Goes on slight anthropomorphizing tangent then dives into the next part...:

"Ecology of fear"

Ah, lads, we are back in biology class aren't we. Except this time we are anthropomorphizing the hell out of everything! "The deer are afraid of being eaten alive, so afraid that they sometimes choose to eat less..."

Okay, did anyone tell this guy that the amount of food the herbivores (ungulates namely) before wolves were reintroduced was literally killing everything? Without wolves to balance the prey populations out they overgrazed, populations skyrocketed and so did disease.

The rest of this is a tangent, so I'll skip over it.

"Wolves suffered too"

Hancock cites the outbreaks of canine distemper disease that have occurred in YNP since reintroduction. This is a bit of a mute point, since canine distemper can fuck any canine population up whether it's a brand new reintroduced group of wolves or they've been there for decades.

Also, can we note how he talks about canine distemper then shows a wolf with mange?? hmmmm.

"Numbers of animals vs welfare"

Dude talks about random bullshit regarding animal rights. Loooooots of emotional heartstrings attempting to be pulled. He is 10000% coming from one of those anti-predator perspectives. Biiiig yikes.

"It's too complex (human health analogy)"

This section was basically mansplaining but with vegans lol.

"The choice we have"

He brings in wild animal contraception?????? I???? Girl what. I mean it's a thing yeah but I did not expect that to be where he was going.

Hancock talks about "one of the cruelest, and unfortunately most romanticized and thus most prevalent methods of population control" AKA reintroducing predators. Hmmmm it's almost like he didn't read about the mass amount of ungulates and other prey animals dying off in YNP when winter came (prior to reintroduction) and there wasn't enough food to sustain them all, subjecting them to excruciating deaths and long drawn out starvation and disease.

Hancock then goes onto how animals eat each other alive, which like, yeah, they do. AND THEN he talks about "wild animal suffrage" which, frankly I refuse to google. Blah blah blah he's anti-hunting who would've thought.

"we didn't do it for the animals"

Okay this actually has some value to it. Hancock talks about how wolves weren't reintroduced for their benefit, or anyone else, but only for people and tourism. This is both right and wrong.

I'm sure that all the biologists and hard working members on the reintroduction team would disagree that it wasn't done for the animals, but who knows. Anyway, the point that tourism would rake in a lot of cash for the state was also something that helped wolves get reintroduced, since we know many government officials weren't in it for the animals. So yeah, sort of true, but not really.

Hancock goes on about what animals are concerned about, even adding a little wolf with a thought bubble (which tbh, I'm sure if wolves knew about the technicalities of biodiversity they would love it, since it usually means a better quality of life). More anthropomorphizing and entitled vegan guilt tripping.

At this point I stopped watching, since it's already been roughly an hour, and although I could do this all day, I have to work later.

To answer your question anon, this video is very poorly put together and I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole. There is little to no research done prior to creating it, and the creator talks from a animal rights activist point of view, which is never helpful.

im gonna use the scuffed giovanni for this . you should have a gray background by the way (in the progress at least, white backgrounds in the end are fine)

pick a white (which is not white) (i might change it later)

base colours (i like to go pastel / less saturated so the shading can be the heavy + showy but you can do whatever)

you have all the base colours in 1 layer then you do this (described in the other post) basically you put a gray layer above it so you can picture better where the shading would be

i was going to show the next step but remembered some tips to help stuff blend better

(first one adds the tone of the skin to the bangs) (second one adds fading on the forehead) LOL now back to giovanni

above the grey layer you create a new one in the same mode where it doesnt go out of the lines and you shade with red (or any colour, its your choice)

you delete the gray layer anddd you copypaste the shading layer 3 times (in the colours i recommend :>)

gotta look like this , i like to put the brown, red and blue in multiply (the layer mode) and play with the opacity until i find something i like (purple not that much)

(%25 brown multiply, %13 blue multiply, %5 red multiply if you like the recipe)

tada (im going further in shading but this actually is a good solid result to end in) okay okay , now new layer on top

you go and fill the shading enough so it has an outline (i understand myself) and experiment with the layer modes again , im gonna try light blue/purple and green, not pink because giovanni is already pink , he has warm colours so gotta go to the opposite side of the wheel

It's pretty self explanatory, it's just a lab coat in a dark purple. I also made the fading effect kind of like how i did with Raph's kimono, to show how much this idiot is using it. It's kinda ripped at the ends too, probably from toyibg with chemicals. Changed his wraps to a much darker gray color to match all the edgy vibes (that he definitely got from Leo)

It fuctions the same way as the rise boy's comms work. The Utroms and Professor Honeycutt (whom they manage to save when his head crash landed back on earth near New York thank god) has helped him a lot with the materials needed.

He can double tap it and have some cool holographic iron man type thibg going on, which is a major improvement.

All of their friends and huz brothers have one and they're pretty expensive/tske a long time to fix if they got destroyed so the others usually prefer the T-Phones, which is easier to make, Donnir has a ton of them.

Donnie mostly uses it tho, for hacking and such

So basically Eriko died in the hospital n tada! Ajin!! Kei manages to swipe her out of there along with Kaito’s help and they run off together.

they do it as a joke but also they’re super drunk and just like the karaoke everyone encourages them bcs it’s good content like ilies vlogs the whole thing but the footage is subpar and they all believe that thing that’s like it’s not actually a real wedding

except it is and they find out after abu dhabi and laugh about and then a few hrs later yuki has pierre cornered somewhere and says something nonchalantly about annulment and pierre avoids him for the whole winter break

it’s easier, if he avoids him, to pretend yuki really wanted to marry him. or that he doesn’t exist, whichever is less painful at any given moment in time.

AND IT SUCKS ESPECIALLY bcs hed convinced yuki to move TO milan, FINALLY. and alpine keeps trying to get him to move closer to their HQ and he keeps saying no and they keep saying at least france and he keeps saying no…. but…

anyways it’s stupid of him to think he can avoid this and his friends tell him so but he can’t help it he just keeps thinking if he doesn’t see yuki then yuki can’t tell him he doesn’t actually want him in any ways that’s emotionally real and he just. he can’t. not now.

and he can’t avoid yuki forever because they’re best friends and legally married in the united states and live in the same city that’s only so big so running into each other is inevitable

I thought I was crazy for thinking that abt that one Rin panel but I'm glad I'm not the only one, since Kaisagi is rising in popularity esp w/ Hiori's comments abt the in-universe social media. Do u think the light novels and profiles are not written by Kaneshiro? Bcz while they weren’t bad at all( they were quite great) there was this missing spark in them. Like with Isagi, they made him out to be able to see mosquitos across a room and note the temp change in the air as a BABY?? I-??????. I am very confused.

And in a profile, he has 200 level or smth eyesight?? Normal is 150 so.., idk maybe I am just being extremely dumb.

But to me, manga Isagi was so loveable and inspiring bcz he was a normal person who was willing to break and challenge himself to reach his goal, forging a will that was strong enough to withstand all the pressure. Not superpowers.

And in his profile, his type is someone who smiles a lot and it fits bachira but to me it sounds like another way to fit in to what people expect of him. There was a meta on Isagi and anger expression floating around in tumblr. And it says how Isagi loved Noa's style bcz of how brutal it was and through football he was able to exert anger in a socially acceptable way instead of being the peace maker and going along with Ichinan style football and just agreeing with Tada's decisions and blue lock is a release frm that. And like you said, isagi isn't as driven abt bachira as he is about him. Narratively too, that is a good thing, allowing bachira to make new connections and new bonds in Spain instead of being fixated with Isagi. And frankly, I don’t think it's healthy for Bachira to get with the first person to be his friend. Let him experience life first.

Well then, I am so excited for Pxg VS BM. The potential match ups, Kaiser most def knows Sae so some interesting conflict w/ Rin if he mentions that like Luna did. The Isagirin matchup, I'm just so excited. Also ,"# Stop looking at Rin's thighs challenge."

Kaneshiro-sensei literally addressed the Kai//sagi shippers in the chapter: nope, not happening, no way, via Isagi himself. He may subvert this later on, but as far as I can tell, given the story's trajectory + Isagi's own character arc, it won't happen. Kaiser will most likely be coming back as a rival/enemy in the U20 World Cup arc too. There simply is no motivation for Isagi to ally with him at all.

Rin's spotlight and turn is coming up, so again, I'm not worried about the current lack of Isagi and Rin moments. It is supposed to be THE highlight of the NEL arc for good reason. And yeah, I doubt Isagi would be as offended if fans had been saying that about him and Rin. On the down low he really is fond of and respects Rin, whereas he despises Kaiser for just about everything besides his skill in soccer.

Truthfully, I've grown a little bored of the recent chapters. Not so much that they aren't good chapters, but more that there's a lack of variety to the characters. IMO Kaneshiro-sensei has hit a bit of a wall on character cast and variety - Ness' backstory is a touch too commonly seen for me to really get into, and feels lacking in effort, though tbf Ness is at best a tertiary character in-series who's there to prop up Kaiser's story.

No real thoughts yet on the choking scene. Currently it's only a sign of Kaiser's desperation to me. The throne he thought he had secured might well be about to collapse from underneath him due to Isagi's growing skill. Seeing how he'll match up against Rin is also interesting, seeing how Rin is actually very much self-sufficient as a striker, while Kaiser thus far seems quite dependent on Ness. I also believe that the PXG match will bring Kaiser into direct confrontation with Loki, who is posited as thus far the best U20 striker we've seen, given how he's a master for the PXG team, rather than simply a fellow player. Fingers crossed that Loki smokes all of them, including Noa, if he comes out to play too.

No, the light novel most likely isn't written by Kaneshiro-sensei, given what I know of the industry. The bulk of it is likely by Moegi Momo-sensei; with credit given to Kaneshiro-sensei because he's the OG creator of the Blue Lock series. That said, there's a good chance that Kaneshiro-sensei provided Moegi-sensei with story ideas and rough character backgrounds who then developed it into proper stories for novelization.

The character profiles are more likely to be done by Kaneshiro-sensei himself, though I am going to point out that it's published as 'supervised by', rather than 'written by'.

Emphasizing this: I generally don't care about light novels, character profiles etc. in terms of my interpretation of the story. To me, what appears in the manga is the only canon there is. Everything else that's official are canon-adjacent and supplementary; fun to read and get an idea of how the characters' personalities and relationships are off-page, but otherwise unimportant unless explicitly referenced in-story. Whatever is not depicted in the manga proper is free real estate.

As for Isagi in the light novel. Well.

He reads as autistic, from that apparent hypersensitivity + his hyperfocused interest in football, and as I've mentioned before: Isagi is also written very much as a tabula rasa, a blank slate of sorts, for target readers to be able to slip themselves into. I think that the emphasis is on Isagi having very clear vision, his personal advantage, amongst the rest of the cast, but again, to me, the light novel is not as important as what we see depicted in the manga proper.

No comments on Isagi's type in the profile, and how it could be Bachira. They're decently written together, and I understand why people would ship them, but they are also just kind of 'meh' for me. Kaneshiro-sensei may intend to write them as a pair, but they are a pretty run-of-the-mill standard MC + best friend ship, with the highlight being Bachira's personal growth via his relationship with Isagi. There are more satisfying ships for me in Blue Lock, and better romances in other animanga series, and while I am fond of shipping, I'm not reading Blue Lock for the shipping. It's just a nice bonus that I find Isagirin's relationship so damn interesting that I've stayed invested.

I haven't read that meta, but that's an interesting interpretation of Isagi's character. Blue Lock is somewhat of a meta commentary on the failures of the general Japanese culture's need to conform to societal pressures and not 'rock the boat', and how it has led to an under performance in football. Isagi as a whole has also been growing more assertive and more confrontational with others, though Kaiser's the only one whom he views with solid enmity.

In the light novel, Isagi's idolization of Noa stemmed from how Noa bypassed the opposing team one after the other, and then from how Noa would rather 'lose a game by a hat trick than win one with an assist'. And doesn't that sound quite like a certain someone, lmao.

I'm back. Pahahaha. That sounded so menacing in my brain. Anyways it's six of crows time again. Crazy I know.

I reread the first book and had to get some thoughts out of my jelly brain:

Firstly: the last time I read the duology I didn't really get the hype around the first book.

It just wasn't that interesting to me and the whole ice court heist felt very... faulty and too fast paced. Everything was kind of weirdly put together and rushed. Fight scenes. Emotional scenes. Most of it except for the flashbacks and the banter felt too quick.

I couldn't connect with the characters and I feel like I also didn't really understand a lot of them. Maybe the fact that I read it in German changed something as well, probably changed something.

Now being older and rereading it after the show while properly indulging in the fandom I found myself enjoying every interaction between the characters and actually really noticed a lot of their growth. I appreciate them more and while reading I could overlook that the ice court heist still felt weird. Or rather the heist wasn't weird but it's weird to me that people call it an absolute masterpiece.

I think it should just be seen as something that it is: "A bunch of messed up teenagers doing the impossible with the help of luck and a few good tricks."

That's a mindset I ought to keep when musing about the heist, I suppose. I'm not sure if it was intended as such but it is what I gathered from it.

Secondly: I cherish the characters way more than before and that makes a major difference. Since what I've mentioned before and I have been constructing the characters in my brain as who they are and what I appreciate about them the first book became 10 times better.

This point is also related to the fact that everything feels rushed because when you barely know the characters their banter might be funny but it doesn't affect you as much as it does once you know them. Now it feels like you're reading of friends joking around instead of strangers.

Kaz:

During the first read I really despised Kaz. I may said I found him interesting but now I feel more like I just said that out of a want to understand what the rest of the world apparently agreed upon which is that Kaz is phenomenal. He's great he's wonderful and a big player when it comes to book crushes.

What I can say is that the TV series really helped me understand and ultimately like Kaz more. Specifically the second season. In the first season, I don't connect Book-Kaz with the Kaz on screen but the second season did him justice. To a degree. (Idk why he gives Nikolai his cane (please fix that)) Probably also because in season 2 he was in his actual plot and habitat.

This time when I write:"I find him interesting." I mean it. I actually really enjoy watching how his character moves and tada! I now even acknowledge his crush on Inej. Because in my first read I subconsciously never really believed him. He was too much of an asshole to me. But even if I believed him I didn't have any pity left to sympathize with him. Blinded by hate I suppose.

This time I actually had an understanding of his actions, why he takes them, and what they mean to him.

I still view him as a ruthless fucker who only has space for himself when it comes to his friends but it's easier to bear when I actually want to know more about his rage and logical reasoning. The way he gets to where he is.

Inej:

In the first read, I may liked Inej. In the second read, I put her on a pedestal and prayed next to her feet every night.

I don't know what hold me from seeing Inej for who she is in my first read but I know that now I could explode with love for her. It's funny to me because I thought I quite enjoyed reading about her but for some reason, it intensified.

Anyways her character growth and the resolve she finds in herself to say no, choosing what's best for her. Oof-

Also, Danielle Galligan (actress of Nina Zenik) said that Inej is just so authentic she brings other people to be truthful in her presence. I just really loved that statement.

Nina and Jesper:

I still adore both of them as I did when I first read it. Nothing much changed. Except maybe it got worse. But all in all, I'm the same old simp.

Wylan and Matthias:

Matthias I found way funnier. During the first read, I was just hating on him for obvious reasons. And even at the end of it all I wasn't a big fan and I didn't grab a lot of his pov nor what Nina meant when she said that he's just a boy with rage planted inside of him.

Now I understand that better and of course, he's still an annoying stupid big honk that doesn't know shit about the world but at least his confusion and the others mocking him were enjoyable. And the character development will forever make me happy.

I adore him and Nina. They're so sweet together and I didn't think I'd ever say that after my first read. But here we are. What a journey it has been.

It's the same as the first time with Wylan. I loved him but I didn't get any chapters from his pov so I was pissed. The show slaughtered the reveal of his dyslexia which I still don't support but maybe they can make the angst work somehow if there's to be a spin-off.

Also, I was scared that he would be useless throughout the whole book. Because in my memory, he wasn't but maybe that's just my old memory blinded by the pink glasses.

However, I think it's often hard to judge Wylan on this since he operates more in the background and with the few resources he has. Of course, he's still a weight the others drag along during the heist but let's be honest: Wylan was less of a problem than other characters messing up.

Obviously one has to consider that Wylan doesn't get the big jobs to begin with but one can counter-argue that Kaz could've left Pekka alone in the cell instead of taking too long and risking all their lives for his vendetta.

This reminds me: the scene where Kaz exposes Jesper about having told a dime lion he's leaving town will forever make me mad for this exact reason.

Kaz says he can't trust Jesper anymore. He says he wanted to punish him by not telling him about Wylan looking like Kuwei or that Wylan and Nina were actually safe when Van Eck destroyed their ship.

I don't even know where to start. Did Kaz ever really trust Jesper? Don't think so. He just knew how to use him but trust? The only one he ever conceded to was Inej which could be considered a spark of trust. That's it. I feel like he doesn't have the right to speak of trust when all he ever gave were simple orders.

Then his thoughts about punishing him.

Dear Kazzle Dazzle, did anyone punish you when your weakness showed and you collapsed in a prisoner wagon even though you knew this could've happened? Did anyone punish you when you left Nina alone in the corridor of a high-security prison? Did anyone punish you when you sent Nina in a death trap with Matthias and Brum that could've gone very wrong very quickly? It was a gamble and he says it himself. He even says he would be the one to pay for all these "tree jokes". But no Kaz. You wouldn't have been the one to take the brunt of this. It would've been Nina. She would've paid with her consciousness. Worse than death.

Nina was lucky that luck was on your side. I guess the third scenario is still very different from the first and second ones because at least Kaz tried to save her but nonetheless it annoyed me that he made it about himself. I get why but the why doesn't help him.

Thirdly: I have my problems with the writing style and plot.

By no means am I a professional especially not when it comes to English as it is not my mother tongue but I just wanted to describe the feeling I've got from it.

This is a tricky one because I'm not the biggest fan of either. I mean the only reveals or plot-twists that really hit home are the ones not related to the ice court. So the biggest portion of the book I wasn't too keen whenever some grand scheme worked because it didn't seem like a scheme at all. It was a lot of luck.

In the first read that bothered me. In the second read it didn't too much.

The writing style isn't my favourite. I don't hate it though. I feel like some of the similes are pretty damn good and the train of thought of the characters and descriptions are nicely woven together. The dialogues are very strong and the banters may be some of the best I've ever read. Even fanfiction got some serious competition here.

However, as I said it felt rushed and like sometimes there wasn't the right feeling for how the scenes should end. When I first read it I found this even worse than in my second read. For instance, the fight with Jesper and Wylan against the Tidemakers doesn't take much longer than a few seconds to read. But apparently, that fight had a big impact on Jesper. It's never mentioned again in the book but it's the start of him questioning whether he should go and learn about his powers. And since we already don't get any background about him in the first book I feel like this at least could've been a longer struggle.

In conclusion, I know it's not all about the plot and a book can be about good characterization and everything. But I also know that I can love something and still criticise it. Usually makes the media even better.

The characters are where the book shines which means a reread or watching the show and then reading it feels like the smarter option to me. It's worth it and it lets you see things in a different light. That's me speaking from my subjective point of view but it's also my review so. Get wrecked I guess?

Thoughts In General

Mordred originally starts off as a creepy child (12ish I'd say). No hate, ofc, but The Beginning of the End really shows a creepy stare. Idk, Asa Butterfield’s eyes are chilling which was very fitting for the role. He gets… better. The Nightmare Begins shows a more carefree child initially with hope and joy, which suggests the glaring and the anger from the first season is more based on being literally trapped in Camelot, which is fair. We see Mordred’s power come into play here, knocking out, or possibly killing, some knighs [And Merlin has the audacity to act shocked as if he hasn’t killed plenty of people at this point]. 

The last that we see of young Mordred is The Witch’s Quickening, in which he is kinda getting manipulated by Alvarr, and the last we see of him for a very long time is him swearing revenge-ish to Emrys who tries to cause his death. So like, I too would be swearing revenge if this bastard tried to trip me knowing it would likely be my death after. Like, Emrys, to the Druids, was supposed to be this protector-type figure. Sure, to magic and stuff, but,,, ouch? 

Anyway, Mordred leaves the scene until he gets thrown into existence again as a young man (20-24 years old?) in Season 5. Alexander Vlahos’ portrayal seems very 👌, perfect and on point. Anyway, things happen, Mordred becomes a knight, swearing to protect Camelot and whatnot and he’s good at it. Supposedly, according to Arthur, one of the best, or will soon be. Sure, this is foreshadowing, but I’d like to think its just that Mordred is that good. He want’s to show off. He want’s to be the best (for both Emrys and Arthur). He wants to prove to everyone that he is good. 

There are snippets in episodes through the season that show his character. He is strong, both in magic and in his morality. He refuses to ‘out’ Merlin when hunting Finna, he stands with Arthur when Guinevere is enchanted, and then, we see him spare a girl. It doesn’t mean much at the moment outside of Mordred is sparing someone escaping from a group of dead knights. 

Kara, we learn, was an old friend. But someone who rejects the goodness of what may be within Arthur, and with brazzen impulse also later tries to kill the King. Mordred at this point is pulled in two ways, his loyalty to his friend, and loyalty to the King. It snaps, because of course it must, when Kara is killed, and Mordred leaves Camelot for Morgana. 

A fall from grace, but up to this point, Mordred has firmly stuck to his own understanding of honour. He perceives Merlin having done nothing he should have, and thus must be considered the true enemy here, giving up his name to Morgana (who should really have figured out something at this point, that serving boy is too hardy to kill somehow). 

Then, with a sword forged in Aithusa’s breath, he fights Arthur. Arthur hesitates upon seeing Mordred, giving him every chance to strike him down. And when Mordred himself falls to Excalibur, he smiles. 

I’d like to believe this smile wasn’t malice or revenge based, but a sense of completion. He did what he had to, to protect others. To, hell, obey the prophecy that dictated it will be a druid who will kill Arthur. 

Must that druid have been Mordred from the very beginning? Could a different person have taken that spot? Was it made to be Mordred based on Destiny or the actions Merlin took against Mordred? Who knows. I certainly don’t.

Knights

Older Mordred is shown to respect his fellow knights who treat him like a little brother. He certainly feels friendly with Elyan and Percival the most (though that may be my head saying Gwaine noticed Merlin keeping Mordred at arms length and did the same cause Gwaine is a ride-or-die friend). 

Percival - 46 works under the Mordred/Percival tag, with plenty of hurt/comfort and angst feelings around. 

Elyan - 5 works in the Elyan/Mordred tag, which is very unacceptable, this pairing needs more love wow… Ok, but from what there is its so soft and cute, do recommed checking that out actually. Only 1 multichapter, the others are under 2k.

Gwaine - 16 works for Gwaine/Mordred, which is very pwp heavy it seems, also plenty of modern settings. Personally don’t ship it due to my head going ):< but I think the dynamic there would work. 

Leon - 12 works for Leon/Mordred which is shocking to me more in the fact that my head constantly wants Leon with no one cause he just doesn’t want connection like that but, lots of gift giving and modern fics so it actually works I suppose. 

Lancelot - 1 fic in a different language and I havent a clue what it says. Which is fair, considering Lancelot in the show is dead by the time Mordred shows up. 

Morgana

Mordred, as a child, had a close bond to Morgana. She helped him when she really didn’t need to. He looked at her and saw a friend, a figure of protection. Someone who got undoubtedly punished for helping him when the knights caught up to them on the street. Later, then, Morgana falls into his care when she arrives at the Druids encampment. Later more, we see Mordred and Morgana hugging when they see each other. It doesn’t feel, as some would depict, as motherly, but more friends? Maybe a sibling type? I imagine the writers were attempting to give the feeling of family to the two to attempt the familial connection between Mordred and the Pendragons (Anna or Morgause are often depicted as his mother depending on the author). Indeed, when he felt alone and betrayed, he turned to Morgana, betraying his character arc for most of Season 5 and fell right to the Prophecy’s hands. 

There is currently, as of writing this, 74 works under Mordred/Morgana, so it’s certaintly not a popular ship to have, but there is a distinct feeling of hurt/comfort in the relationship that I could understand. 

I also like the fandom idea that Mordred was the one to find a way to get Morgana + Aithusa out of Sarrum’s cage. Not sure how my head constructs it, but I like the base idea of it, you know?

Merlin

There is a power dynamic here that is, at the base, unbalanced. Much like how Arthur/Merlin is unbalanced, but in this Mordred and Merlin both know fully what the other may be capable of, unlike Arthur who is predominantly in the dark. 

Mordred grows up with kinda a hero-complex in his mind for Emrys, whereas Merlin grows paranoid of the future Mordred may follow. Many times the relationship has hints of, erm, darkness? But it also has hints of hope of better futures. 

Currently 492 fics for the pairing Merlin/Mordred… with my own on oct 29 being the most recent at the moment. That’s a mood, thanks. Not many writers for it, but it does have a theme of angst and pining and ignoring angry flying lizards that breathe fire, and a bit of pwp added in to some. Plenty of Modern fics, Good Modred fics, generalized romance, Genderswapping, and only 15 are tagged as underage. 

I know many people do not prefer the shipping of Mordred with anyone due to age and peadophilia hints in relationships, which is completely fair, however by Season 5, as a knight Mordred would be 22. Not… excusing things, really, but…ahhh… I think I may be digging a hole right now and am shutting up so onto…..

Arthur

Arthur is protective, which is mainly just part of his character, but to Mordred it’s different. Like how it is with Merlin, Arthur and Mordred are constantly choosing to save each other’s lives when they could have not (or were discouraged on it w/ that crossbow scene). This is, mainly, asense of decency, of two good men with honour. Once Mordred joins the knights, Arthur is quick to see Mordred is strong, easily one of the best.

The two work well together, which feels similar to Morgana’s analysis into familial relations, more due to trying to stick somewhat to the myths of Arthur being both Uncle and Father to Mordred. Luckily, we don’t actually need to worry about that with Merlin BBC due to the whole Druids stuff, but the feeling of…familial love or more still is present in the relationship here.

Then… with 93 works under the Arthur/Mordred tag, we end up with a high number of Modern/AU works with Hurt/Comfort and Angst predomenint. However, it should be noted that within these 93 works, 56 also tag Merthur. Unclear how that’s working, I’m just literally on Ao3 looking at numbers and questioning how.

Kni's silly lil 6 month anniversary for "Leona Crossing" event!!!!

Hi!!! Hello!!! Recently my current (very long) fic, Leona crossing: new Shroud horizons, reached its 6th month anniversary!!! It did this month on the 23rd, in fact! I posted it for the first time on September 23rd of last year, so... Yay! Half anniversary event!!! I think!!! I'm gonna blab a little bit more under the cut hehe, including the event details👍✌️

So.

Welcome to the rest of this post, glad to have you here! Writing is my passion, but before I started writing Leona crossing, I was in a huge rut. An endless writer's block. I had a bit of a tumble (or perhaps a hard fall) during the end of 2021, which lead me to writing nearly nothing in 2022... This lead to the deterioration and dust collecting of my writing skills. I discovered twisted wonderland in 2022, and eventually found leoide and fell in love. I joked lightly back then, asking if I should write fanfiction. Someone said "why not?". Then I really sat there. Thought about it. Why not? I threw a few ideas around, sat down, and wrote the first chapter of Leona crossing soon after. I thank my barrel comrade and beta for supporting me through this sudden change in writing from my oc works to straight up fanfiction lol. So, tada, Leona crossing was born, and slowly but surely I got out of my rut. And I'm writing again. I'm really proud. This is half a celebration of Leona crossing, but also half a celebration that I've been writing for 6 months without hesitation and without anything to stop me again. It's a really nice feeling, I'm really happy I took that scary leap of faith and started writing my first ever fanfiction, it had lead to plenty of wonderful things!
