if you ever feel good about yourself just remember that rf kuang wrote and published the poppy war, the dragon republic, the burning god, babel: an arcane history and yellowface all before turning 28

Rin and Nezha, the egoist and the altruist, the peasant and the prince, the sun and the moon, the fire and the flood, the Phoenix and the Dragon.
Both are bound by their blood to be opposites. They are victims of their upbringings and they both want what the other has but cannot fathom living the other’s life, not truly.
They are opposing forces, they are an unstoppable force and an unmovable wall, they are two cardinal directions on opposite ends of a compass, they are north and south poles on the same magnet and at the end of the day they do love each other so much.
But a love like that is destined to fail because they cannot change the rules of this plane of existence so they can either coexist without interacting at all to keep the balance or risk destroying one another in the chaos of their union.
What a cruel and beautiful tragedy they are.

rest in peace to the real ones (mare barrow and runin fang) for having to put up with their crazy rich bratty mentally unstable ex-situationships whose betrayals shifted the entire narrative and who couldn’t help but induce psychological warfare through the messiest, most passive-aggressive letters

i truly don’t think the cike is talked about enough. they’re an unconventional found family and while i loved the burning god as much as the first 2 books it was initially hard to get through it bc of the cike’s absence. everything about them is so bittersweet, like how suni soothed rin like how altan had calmed him down. or how ramsa willingly sacrificed himself for rin. or how they were deemed as a bunch of freaks by everyone else but it didn’t matter bc they had each other. we’ll never know what enki and unegen were up to when they left. just the thought of them is so painful.

sometimes i’m doing alright and then i remember that kitay probably isn’t as good of a person as we think. that he’s probably just as violent and jaded as the rest of the characters but he appears much kinder through rin’s eyes, because no matter how poorly she thinks of the rest of the world, she can never bring herself to distrust kitay

“Because you are a coward!” she shouted. “How many men died at Boyang? How many are going to die today? But no, Yin Nezha has the power to stop the river and he won’t do it, because he’s fucking scared of a tattoo on his back—”
-> The Dragon Republic
"Dying was easy. Living was so much harder—that was the most important lesson Altan had ever taught her."
"He knew she hadn’t done this for him. No, she’d done him no great mercy. She’d known that his future—the future she’d just assigned him—was full of horrors"
"He didn’t know how he’d weather what came next, but he had to try. He owed it to her to try."
-> The Burning God
Rin started off by accusing Nezha of being a coward but in the end she left him with a broken country destroyed by poverty, famine and war. In a way, in the end, she realized that perhaps he wasn't so cowardly after all and he was the only one she knew strong enough to take on this challenge and maybe somehow free their country once more. She says so herself that this is the cruelest thing she could do to him but she knows that he can handle it.

In all these years, I have not come across any soulmates who are as perfect and heartbreaking as Rin and Kitay. Their bond was so pure and unconditional.
