2.) hand kisses

Every acolyte that passes through the great doors of the Gray Temple is taught to be conscious of their surroundings, to be observant of the world, and to see the balance in all things. Every acolyte that manages to leave the Gray Temple as a shadowdancer, has been taught to influence that balance by taking life. 

It’s a grim kind of irony; to be taught to be connected to the world, while being shaped into a weapon, an irony Iztol is painfully aware of; to be made aware of the inherent worth each life has, only to remove it, often with her bare hands. Lingering too long on those kinds of thoughts is a habit she is yet to break, even as she tries to still her mind for her evening meditation, and more often than not, they take a vicious turn. 

She becomes so entrenched in a cycle of her own thoughts, she doesn’t notice footsteps approaching until they’re right beside her. The footsteps pause, before moving to sit beside her, close enough to brush shoulders. Iztol’s mouth twitches into a small smile, as only one person in the camp would sit so close; Shadowheart often sits with her as she meditates, waiting for her to be done or even doing her own meditations alongside her. It helps relax her mind a little, but not enough to curb the cycle that her mind has fallen into. 

“What’s bothering you?” Shadowheart eventually speaks up. Iztol’s eyes blink open, tilting her head in her direction.

“What do you mean?”

“Your brow is furrowed, and you’re doing that thing with your hands; you always do that when something unpleasant is on your mind.”

Iztol’s head tilts further in confusion, and a tiny, knowing smile appears on Shadowheart’s face, before she brings up her hand, opening and closing her fist slowly a few times. Iztol hums and nods.

“I didn’t realise I was doing that.”

“You never do, especially when something is on your mind. So, stop trying to avoid the question and tell me what’s wrong.”

Iztol frowns, trying to find the right words. She looks down, first at the ground, and then at her hands, blowing out a sigh. 

“I suppose… I have been wondering if I can, or am even meant to, hold anything gently. It feels like sometimes, I was trained too well, made into too efficient of a weapon,” She eventually says, even if admitting it aloud makes her want to recoil into herself. Shadowheart’s own brow furrows and she frowns as well, before shuffling over, now sitting in front of Iztol. 

“Give me your hand,” She says, softly but sternly. Iztol’s eyes flick up and meet hers; now her expression is unreadable, but she relents, offering up her right hand towards her. Shadowheart takes it gently in both of her own, turning it over so her palm is facing upwards. Her thumbs trace over the lines and calluses for a moment. 

“You really think that?” She asks, movements pausing as she looks back up to meet Iztol’s eyes. 

“More often than I’d like, truthfully,” she answers, and when Shadowheart smiles, she grows puzzled, “Why? Is that amusing?”

“No, not in the slightest,” comes the immediate reply, although the smile still remains on her face, “but it’s a little silly, if I’m being honest.” 

Before she can ask her to clarify, Shadowheart brings Iztol’s hand to her lips, pressing a soft kiss to the back of it. She then moves it again, bringing it up to her face so it cradles her face. Iztol feels her entire arm freeze up momentarily, before it relaxes and she smiles fondly.

“Whatever you were told, whatever your masters tried turning you into, they were wrong and they failed,” Shadowheart says, her smile widening, “You’re one of the most gentle people I’ve ever met.”

“I’m not sure about that,” Iztol replies idly, mostly focusing on the woman before her. 

“Well, I am,” she replies, which makes Iztol laugh, tugging her closer and pressing a gentle kiss to her forehead. 

“Don’t go spreading it around then; I have a reputation to maintain.”

Shadowheart laughs, and the weight in Iztol’s heart seems to lift a little.

8. What's an old project idea that you've lost interest in?

i’m really having to wrack my brain for this one because i don’t think i’ve got any, at least not to do with marlo. i’m still half-invested in writing his fic but for the most part, and i swear to god i’ll do that ‘the other side of paradise’ animatic someday, but apart from that i don’t entertain myself with the delusion that i’d actually get it done :’)

the other stuff all belongs to lapsed interests! i had this enormously elaborate post-canon universe for the four swords, the type where i worldbuilt a new dark world / evolution of the twilight realm / parallel to lorule out of whole cloth. or tried to, at least. i was like, twelve, so... (the gist was rolling back shadow link’s slapdash excuse of a redemption arc, making him “king” of the dark world, but really a puppet for the Secret Banished Fourth Goddess—the tetraforce is a fun idea, sue me—so she could like. get her revenge or whatever. i’m still fond of the idea to name her ‘ikana’ though, like the place in majora’s mask.)

nothing came of it, but i still have fsa lore memorized front to back & shadow link has his own little niche in my heart 🖤 the first chunk was structured like an actual zelda game from the links’ pov, with a bunch of macguffins and items to find, then an intermission, and then a more traditional fantastical story following shadow link trying to restore light/balance to hyrule while the actual four swords are separated. (admittedly, i don’t like to ship the links, but you’ll pry the green/shadow dynamic in this timeline from my cold, dead hands.)

20. Something everyone else finds hard to draw but you enjoy

OLDER FOLKS/DIFFERENT FACES!!! i don’t know if a whole lot of folks find it hard—in fact i would argue it really isn’t—and some do it a lot better than me, but IMO they’re way more fun and interesting to draw than the same “pretty face” template another dozen times. i do not care about your skinny slim-face button-nose bishie-boy oc. give me a big nose, imperfect teeth, particular lip shapes, different facial proportions, smile lines and crow’s feet! they’re so pleasing and fun and create that extra distinctive Flavor, and it’s just better character design to implement those type of things.

i’m never not gonna have more fun and be prouder of the end result when i’ve got to draw a character that presses the definition of ‘attractive’. marlo is way handsomer than i ever intended to make them, but a lot of that’s from their more unique features and how much i love drawing them. and like, i’m not joking. over half my non-fandom artfight bookmarks are weird old guys (gender-neutral). i love it (also i think machinery would be really fun to draw but i haven’t had the courage to give it a shot)

30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated

i could list a lot, tbh. my art is fantastic. marlo’s outfit meme got plenty of notes, but i love it to death. that tango redesign i did got an eighth of the old version’s notes and i’ll die mad about it. this sango-themed one with the fun perspective. that valentine’s art i did and stare at sometimes because it’s just plush. that tits-out marlo moping in their penthouse i never finished. OR MY STICKER FOR THE NSBSZINE’S CONTEST. marlo glaring over their shoulder asmr. and though it is now an entire year old i’ll never forget how hard i fought for those 20 notes on that full scene of nori in octo valley
