1. do you know how you want the story to end when you start, or are you just stumbling through the figurative wilderness hoping to find a road?

oh i am absolutely always stumbling through the wilderness, i have literally never once started a multi-chapter fic knowing how i want it to end

3. on a scale of 1-10 how much do you enjoy incorporating romance into the average story?

a solid 6.5 i think, depends on how romancy the romance is

7. tell us about the plot of the first fanfic you ever wrote

LMFAO, i’ll start by saying it doesn’t exist anymore i deleted it years ago, so sadly i cannot send anyone the link. BUT it was a wattpad naruto fanfic i wrote out of pure spite after deciding i could write one better than some of the others i had read without having even watched the show. it was an oc x kiba fic, with a slight love triangle between oc kiba and naruto. it won a watty fandom award back when that was a thing

12. do you ever have trouble focusing on writing? how do you get around that? 

i do!! i just completely stop writing and try doing something else to keep creating but let my brain take a break bc it apparently needs it, that’s how a lot of my other like collages or fanart or shitty amvs get made. like rn for example!!! i’m having trouble focusing on either of my ongoing fics, so i’ve been drawing Ronance as mermaids! here’s a little WIP of that

18. what is your most and least favorite part of writing?

“You aren’t safe.”

It wasn’t a statement said out of concern for Nancy’s wellbeing. It was an announcement declaring Nancy as the threat—that she was the danger. Jane had figured out just exactly what it was Nancy needed help with. Maybe she had already known.

“You aren’t safe,” Jane repeated, her hand slowly sliding off, “You need to leave.”

No, no! Don’t send me away yet. Please.

Nancy caught Jane’s wrist in a surge of desperation, “Wait, please. I need your help, I can’t live like this. I need you to get him out of my head. I need him gone.”

“I can’t help you. I’m sorry.”

Nancy had to force herself to swallow a miserable wail as she let go of Jane, “But… you were the one who sent him away in the first place.”

Jane shook her head solemnly, then nodded towards the wretched scar on Nancy’s neck, “This is different. I stopped him from getting Max. He already has you.”

“He doesn’t–that’s not fair,” Nancy’s hands curled into fists so tight her knuckle bones looked like they were mere seconds from ripping through her paper skin, “This isn’t fair.”

“It’s not,” Jane agreed solemnly, “I am sorry.”

Her blush brightened and she quickly left me, gathering the bandages in such a frenzy that I couldn’t tell which of us was more looking forward to her return. I begrudgingly returned to the bath as she’d asked and waited for her. It was torture, not even the promise of her arrival took the edge off. That burrowing sensation of bubbles finding their way to the surface of the water from underneath my shed was just too much to bear! As if I were sitting there, a decaying body waiting for a burial the likes of Mariel’s people, instead of the righteous fire we lizardfolk engulfed ourselves in to reach Kava’s kingdom! 

I gripped the edge of the bath angrily when the tent flapped open and she came back inside. The shy look on her face before she turned around and tied the tent flaps together arrested me, as if she’d commanded me not to rise, let alone move until she said otherwise. I swallowed as I watched her approach, my heart leaping in my chest and other places as she drew ever nearer. 

Gods, she was everything.

The diffused light patterned the softest shadows on her lovely face, placing their ungrateful kisses on her freckles, those tender lips, that charming nose, and those collarbones of hers. So perfect were those two ridges framed by the square neckline of her dress… How many times had I known those features beneath my lips and fingers? So many and yet not enough. Never enough. I could spend the rest of my nights, days, every waking moment, knowing them as I knew my own and it would still not be enough. To know her, to love her, was to love the stars dotting the night sky, for they and she were one in the same—peerless and more than any of us mortals deserved to set eyes on.

She kneeled beside the tub and leaned on its edge, then softly whispered. “Tell me what to do.”

“Been a dangerous thin’ to say.”

“I— I don’t care.”

I shifted in the bath and rested a curled finger beneath her chin, coaxing her just that much closer. “Been that so…?”

“Yes…”

She closed the space between us and pressed her lips to mine. I groaned and trailed my knuckles down her supple neck. A soft sound escaped her. If I could but devour her whole…

“Tell me what to do.”

“Fetch that there stone and strip down.”

⛄️ December!!! There’s snow, my birthday, my favourite holidays, and such a lovely festive atmosphere in the air. I love that everyone’s in high spirits singing Christmas carols all around, and it’s a shorter month at work too 🙌

🍁 September: fall is my favourite season, I love everything about it from the beautiful colours to pretty outfits and pumpkin spice latte, not to mention we can remember the 21st night of September all month long 🕺

🌳 I used to love February/March when I lived in Brazil because of Carnival, now June/July are my faves as the official summer months. The whole city comes alive with summery vibes, there’s so much outdoor stuff to do and lots of places to go, and I love the greenery aesthetics!

34. 3 people in history who inspire me:

For those who don’t know her, the woman in the middle is Marielle Franco, a Brazilian politician and human rights activist that served as city council in my hometown until she was brutally shot in 2018. They are still investigating her assassination and it’s likely there are prominent political figures attached to it.

Marielle was such an inspiring woman, an outspoken critic of police brutality and extrajudicial killings, a defender of black women, of favela communities, and of reproductive rights. Her widow, political party and supporters continue her work in the communities which is a small comfort, knowing that her legacy will never die.

January was a month full of firsts for giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji. The growing bear played with enrichment toys, took his first bites of sweet potato and bamboo, and had his first encounter with snow!

January was a month full of firsts for the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s giant panda cub, Xiao Qi Ji. The growing bear played with his first enrichment toys, sampled his first sweet potato, took his first bite of bamboo, let fans into his habitat during his first livestream and experienced his first encounter with snow! Through each of these milestones, giant panda assistant curator Laurie Thompson and keepers Marty Dearie and Mariel Lally helped keep fans at home connected to our cub.

1. Tumbles and Toys (Jan. 11, 2021)

Spending more time out of the den presents our cub with more opportunities to explore — and play! While we have presented Xiao Qi Ji with enrichment items before (most notably a pumpkin for Halloween) we have seen his interest in them grow exponentially since the beginning of January. These items encourage our giant pandas to keep physically active and mentally sharp; they also give the bears an opportunity to use their natural behaviors and choose how to spend their time.

With Xiao Qi Ji becoming more aware of and interested in his surroundings, keepers gave him two toys to investigate: a small red Jolly Egg (perfectly sized for a panda cub) and an empty PVC puzzle feeder. When Xiao Qi Ji is exploring the habitat and happens upon them, he usually stops for a few minutes to paw at them, pick them up and give them a nibble.

Some toys built for cubs are made from softer materials to help the animals grasp or chomp on them. Our team is very careful to watch Xiao Qi Ji as he plays during the day, since Mei Xiang’s more powerful teeth and jaws could damage the toys. Before we leave for the day, we remove these toys from the enclosure. Neither Mei Xiang nor Xiao Qi Ji seem to mind, content to eat or play with their bamboo overnight.

Personality-wise, Xiao Qi Ji seems to take after his mother. Like Mei Xiang, he is careful and cautious when it comes to exploring his environment. Now that he has mastered walking, he has started to practice his climbing skills. He is very deliberate about the paths he takes when traveling up or down the rockwork—more so than siblings Tai Shan, Bao Bao or Bei Bei were. He has taken a few tumbles here and there, but not nearly as many as his brothers and sister did at this age. Luckily, these bears are built to be robust and have thick, wooly fur to cushion their fall.

2. A Playful Panda Cub (Jan. 15, 2021)

Giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji’s word of the week seems to be: play! Our 4.5-month-old cub’s interest in his surroundings really took off this week. He seems to explore the world with his mouth. He nibbles on everything from his paws and enrichment toys to mother Mei Xiang’s ears. While she is eating bamboo, we often see Xiao Qi Ji try to initiate a play session with a few not-so-ferocious bites. After Mei Xiang shifts outside in the morning, he often emerges from the den to “supervise” the keepers as they clean and get the habitat ready for Mei Xiang’s return.

Xiao Qi Ji received his first enrichment toys a few weeks ago and plays with them whenever they catch his attention. Those who have followed his siblings’ stories have asked when Xiao Qi Ji will get a rubber tub. With the adults, we often put leaf-eater biscuits or sensory enrichment (like bubbles) into these tubs. Cubs, though, seem to enjoy the exercise of climbing in and out or just sitting in this cub-sized space.

We weigh Xiao Qi Ji in one such tub. This week, he tipped the scales at 19.8 pounds (9.04 kilograms). He also receives tubs to play in during the day. He is not quite big enough to get out from underneath a tub if it were to overturn on top of him, so he only receives this enrichment during the day when we can keep an eye on him.

3. A Parcel of Sweet Potato (Jan. 22, 2021)

Just like his mother, Mei Xiang, our giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji is curious yet cautious about the world around him. Yesterday — the day our cub turned five months old — we decided to introduce him to something new. Using a piece of bamboo shred as a spoon, we scraped some cooked sweet potato onto the end, then handed it over to Xiao Qi Ji. He grabbed the bamboo in his mouth, paused for a moment to take in the new taste, then lay back and licked the remainder. When we offered him more, he wouldn’t stop nibbling on it!

Xiao Qi Ji clearly enjoyed this new treat, which is not surprising since both Mei Xiang and his father, Tian Tian, are also fond of sweet potatoes. In addition to bamboo, nutrient-rich biscuits, carrots and apples, sweet potatoes are part of our pandas’ balanced diet.

Even though Xiao Qi Ji is beginning to sample some new foods, Mei Xiang’s milk is still his main source of nutrition. Around 1 year old, bamboo and other solid foods make up the majority of a panda’s diet. However, Xiao Qi Ji may nurse for comfort up to 18 months of age. He typically nurses at night and in the early morning. On Wednesday, Jan. 20, he weighed 20.79 pounds (9.45 kilograms), and continues to make good gains.

4. Livestream with Xiao Qi Ji (Jan. 27, 2021)

This was a big week for our little panda cub! On Wednesday, Jan. 27, the giant panda team hosted our first-ever virtual encounter with Xiao Qi Ji. An important part of saving species is being able to tell their stories, and it was wonderful to see in the comments that many of you are as enamored with our adorable ambassador as we are. Your kind words and support for our bears and our team are much appreciated, especially as the Zoo remains closed and we continue to navigate this “new normal” brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Xiao Qi Ji’s newest enrichment toy made an appearance in Wednesday’s broadcast. This week, we gave him a bright green ball with a small handle. Since it is made from a softer material than the adults’ toys, it’s perfect for him to chew on and sink his claws into. It is also scented like green apple, providing some olfactory enrichment, too!

During the livestream, this ball was at the center of a friendly game of tug-of-war between Xiao Qi Ji and keeper Marty Dearie. Don’t let Xiao Qi Ji’s small size fool you—he is remarkably strong! Just before Xiao Qi Ji stole everyone’s hearts — and wrestled his new green ball away from Marty — we placed him on a scale for his weekly weigh-in. Since his last measurement seven days prior, our 5-month-old cub gained another two pounds. This week, he weighed 22 pounds (10 kilograms).

5. A Bear’s First Taste of Bamboo (Jan. 29, 2021)

This week, bamboo was on the menu. We saw Xiao Qi Ji munching on some of his mother Mei Xiang’s leftover leaves. As Xiao Qi Ji’s walking and climbing skills improve, we are starting to see him explore more and more of his habitat. Yesterday, he walked out of the den, through both indoor enclosures, and over to the opposite den. He sat up and pressed his face against the “take out window” where we routinely feed Mei Xiang. It was hilarious to see our curious cub waiting at the same window for us!

6. First Encounter With Snow (Jan. 31, 2021)

As snow blanketed the Washington, D.C. region, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo’s animals woke up to a winter wonderland. With this weather event came another significant milestone—giant panda cub Xiao Qi Ji’s first encounter with snow! Keepers say although he seemed nervous at first, eventually he worked up the courage to take a little nip at the fresh powder.

• The daughter he loves so much was named after a well known scientist, Marie Curie. Her name was Mariel, the 'l' was just can extra that was taken from his wife's nickname, which ended with 'el'.

• Oh god Mariel disliked science so much. Mostly because her parents loved it so much that she felt ignored whenever her mom and dad were so occupied by science.

• But she loved her parents too much, so she acted to like science.

• "Uhm dad when will mom be coming back home?" She asked softly, she asked tugging on her dad's lab coat.

• "Oh- she will be coming home in 2-3 days!" He answered her as he ran his hand over her jet black hair before picking her up "Is there something you want, princess?"

• "I wanna ask!! Why does mommy and daddy like science so much? Mariel don' understand" She frowns clinging to her lovely daddy, Senku

• "Kukuku, I see my princess is finally asking me questions." Senku chuckled as his eyes sparkled, getting ready to explain her everything she wants to know. He goes to the lab she usually shares with his wife.

• Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped to the floor as she percieved all the things in the room.

• Oh god curiosity took better of her. Mariel literally bombarded Senku with questions asking about each and everything.

• She quickly got down carefully wandering in a rush.

• "Daddy, dirteeehh waterr" she points at a test tube "different coloured wateer, pwettyy" pointing at another one, she said making an 'O'with her mouth. "WOAAHHH DIFFERENT STOWNES!!" she went and picked some stones and examined them "they so pretty" she squeaked before looking at one another mysterious looking thing and going towards it.

• "What's th-" she abruptly paused and ran towards her dad and hugs his legs sobbing "daddy, that shtinkksss" she sobbed making Senku laugh a bit before picking her up once again.

• "Kukuku, my small princess, shall I show you something very interesting?" He asked making Mariel's fluorescent red orbs sparkle as she nodded a "Yes please!"

• That's when Senku takes Mariel to another, observatory room where all sorts of highly developed telescopes are present.

• "I'm 10 billion percent sure that you would love this!" He announced as he put her on a seat before adjusting somethings and makes her see through a pair of binoculars.

• "WOAAHH DADDY WHAT THIS?? THERES SO SPARKLE SO MANY PWETTY TIINGS!! IS THIS SKY? BIIGG SO BIIGG" Her excitement echoed through the walls of the room.

• "Kukuku you loved it didnt you?" He said in the most affectionate tone. "YES VERY!!" she exclaimed before jump-hugging into her father's arms who was kneeling besides her.

• "I'm glad to know that" he said as he picks her up realizing that she fell asleep. He takes her to her room and carefully tucks her to sleep.

• "Goodnight princess" he whispers as he gives a soft peck on her forehead before turning the lights off and leaving the room, shutting the door quitely.

• Now Senku was tearing up because, his daughter who refused to talk about science even after his wife tried her best trying to get Mariel interested in science. All he could think was how happy his wife was gonna get.

• Oh how badly Senku wished his wife was home to witness all of this. He was so sure that she would definitely cry. He just missed his wife too much and her daily rants about how much their daughter isnt even interested about knowing what science, even more.

• "Yeah send it to her, I'm 10 billion percent sure she'll cry and probably in front of her regardless the people there." He commanded into the ear piece which was connected to a drone which recorded everything from Mariel asking Senku "I wanna ask!! Why does mommy and daddy like science so much? Mariel don' understand"

Yes. Senku's wife watched the video after finishing the last presentation she had to give as lead researcher in a project. She immediately started crying, because alot of stuff went down when she wasn't home??? She immediately booked tickets home and returned home that night.

Soon after she returned she was so dramatic and ignored Senku and only paid attention to Mariel.

"Babe why are you so dramatic?" "Momma dramatic :O"

"SENKU!!" "Phew finally got noticed, anyways"

Senku hugged both of them before saying "I love you both 10 billion times"

"And we love you 10 billion times more" both of them reeplied to Senku in unison.

summary: marielle expresses her love through the forms of stickers and ryan absolutely adores her (Week 11 of my 30 weeks of writing prompts challenge: stickers)

Whenever filming for a new season of Buzzfeed Unsolved started, Ryan’s schedule would always be more packed than usual. He would stay late at work for meetings and as much as he loved working on Unsolved, he wished that he could spend more time with his girlfriend, Marielle Scott.

The most reasonable compromise Ryan made with his time was to spend the weekends with Marielle, usually at the beach or out exploring, and to work on the weekdays, even Fridays if needed. Even though he spent the weekends with Marielle, he still wished he could spend more time with his wonderful girlfriend. 

Marielle was also really busy as she had a lot of work as an actress but she also noticed that Ryan seemed to always want more time with her. She knew that they were doing the best they could with both of their jam-packed schedules so she brainstormed a solution to solve this dilemma and that solution happened to involve stickers.

The first encounter Ryan had with the stickers was the day that Marielle had to leave Friday morning for the weekend since she had to shoot a movie in Utah. Even though Ryan and Marielle didn’t live together, Marielle still went the distance to slip into Ryan’s apartment while he was sleeping to pack him a lunch and filled up a reusable water bottle with a whale sticker and a sticky note that read “I love you so much! Please stay hydrated this weekend and don’t forget to call❤️”. 

That single event was enough to brighten Ryan’s day entirely and at work, he couldn’t suppress his smile whenever he saw the whale sticker on the water bottle and thought of Marielle and her radiant laugh. Thanks to Marielle, Ryan drank a healthy amount of water, something that he didn’t usually do as he never really felt the need to chug down so many cups of water. 

When Marielle returned on Monday, Ryan drove over to her place and made dinner for them, deciding to ask her about the sticker. As they talked over the first meal Ryan had made by himself in over a month (there was a reason why Postmates was one of the most used apps on his phone), Ryan brought up Marielle’s kind gesture and Marielle excitedly showed Ryan her extensive sticker collection. She had stickers of all different shapes and sizes all organized in a folder. The variety of stickers was honestly astonishing as they ranged from simple, colorful shapes to complex artistically designed decals that could be used to decorate high-end houses.

“I’ve been collecting stickers ever since I was a child. I like to think of these stickers as little pieces of love. My favorite ones are the shiny ones,” Marielle remarked, her sea-glass green eyes glinting with passion as she spoke. She proudly held up a sheet of glittery butterfly stickers. “I got this one from my third-grade teacher because I finished my reading log first.”

“Wow, that’s impressive. Theoretically, what would happen if you ran out of stickers?” Ryan asked, almost wincing as he was sure his unintentional curiosity spoiled the sweet moment. Instead of ruining the moment, he seemed to lighten the mood as Marielle giggled, opening her folder wider to show Ryan all the sheets of stickers that it held. Somehow, the folder was still intact even though it appeared to be holding approximately three thousand sheets of stickers.

“With this assortment? I don’t think it’ll run out so it’s a perfect metaphor for my love,” Marielle explained and Ryan wanted to cry because he didn’t know what on Earth he did to deserve to call such an amazing human being his. 

The next time Marielle has to leave Los Angeles to shoot a film up in Canada, she left Ryan a dog sticker on the back of his laptop along with a sticky note that read, “Don’t forget to take breaks between editing! Also, don’t forget to eat healthy meals or else the lettuce monster will haunt you in your sleep.” Next to those words, Marielle drew a small lettuce with arms, legs, and a comically angry expression.

Ryan though that the note and the dog sticker were the only messages Marielle left behind but he was proven wrong when he walked into his kitchen to grab a snack and saw a sticky note that had a sticker of a bundle of red roses on it that read “Good morning! Or evening! Either way, I hope you’re doing well and this is just a reminder for you to remember to smile because your smile is so beautiful <3”. 

Throughout the next week, Ryan found various sticky notes around his apartment that all had positive, heartwarming messages that always brightened his day. Even Shane noticed the change as he commented about how Ryan didn’t seem like a zombie in the mornings before he had coffee anymore. 

The notes made Ryan miss Marielle more and although he called her almost every single night, he still wished she was here physically with him. The notes also inspired Ryan to create a gift for Marielle when she returned to Los Angeles after wrapping up her shoot in Canada.

First, Ryan gathered his favorite photos of him and Marielle and created a collage, making sure to leave some space between the photos and space for the border. He gathered all the post-it notes that Marielle had left and taped them around as a border for the photos and filled in the empty space with the stickers that Marielle stuck around his apartment. Ryan was never an arts and crafts guy but Marielle’s notes always made his day so much better and he wanted to show gratitude rather than just saying it plainly with words. 

When Marielle returned, Ryan drove her to her apartment, where he had set up the gift, and the moment that the door opened, Marielle saw Ryan’s gift surrounded with a few sheets of shiny stickers, her favorite kind and a bouquet of roses that looked familiar to the sticker of a bouquet of roses that Marielle had stuck with a post-it note. Marielle threw her arms around Ryan’s neck and pulled him into a kiss. As it turns out, little pieces of love do add up over time and these stickers would forever be the reminder of their love for each other.

“What?! No! Nononono no!” A laugh escapes him, sounding entirely too hysterical, and he clears his throat in a desperate attempt to collect himself. “We’re just teammates! Friends! There’s no canoodling between us!”

“He brings you food all the time though,” Remi says, completely ignoring Lance’s adamant denial. “Mama told me that’s love.”

“He also drives you to school.”

“And back!”

“And Mariel said she saw you guys at the movies together and you were—” Kat makes some obscene motions with her hands that would shock anyone into celibacy.  

Christ. Kids these days.

“Okay, first of all, I drive him. Second of all—!”

Lily Collins Gets Candid: GLAMOUR’s December cover star on Les Misérables and success on HER terms

2018 was the year of fearless female performances but THE TV Christmas blockbuster, Les Misérables, saves the best for last with Lily Collins’ star turn as Fantine. Here she navigates the minefield of millennial dating, -13°C locations and a late-twenties crisis with GLAMOUR’S Josh Newis-Smith.

“I’ve been ghosted more times than I care to admit,” Lily confesses, as we discuss the minefield that is millennial dating. Adorned in a slouchy black hoodie with her hair scraped back into a care-free ponytail and barely a lick of make-up, Lily could be any twenty-something in debrief mode.

In fact, the only indication that this is a Golden Globe nominee who since starting to act at the age of two, has carved a place for herself as a go-to starlet – in such varied roles in Rules Don’t Apply, Mirror Mirror and Love, Rosie- is the vast Hollywood home that plays backdrop to our interview and her GLAMOUR cover shoot.

About to hit our screens in her career-defining role as Fantine, who is dumped unceremoniously by her lover - Victorian ghosting if you will - and left to fend for her child alone, we are musing on how, just like the iconic character, Lily has navigated her own fair share of heart ache. “There are times when I’ve [been on dates and] thought we had a great time and then I’ve never heard from the guy again,” she continues. With this level of ‘gal pal’ magnetism it’s no wonder she has garnered 11 million Instagram followers, and counting. “Sometimes that happens after one date, a couple of dates or one month. I would prefer people to be honest with me, as I live like that. I don’t think it will be something I can ever figure out. The good thing is that we all have the same issues.” Alexa, play Thank U, Next by Ariana Grande...

Both 29 years old, we quickly bond over that late-twenties crisis, too. “Everyone in their late twenties goes through it a bit, because we’re heading to the big 3-0,” she reassures me. “But I think I had a quarter-life crisis at 25 where I kept asking, ‘Am I at where I wish to be at?’ I never really set out as a kid with markers of when I want to get married or have kids. But I got to the age where you constantly compare yourself to your friends or other people in your industry.”

It’s this level of realism that makes her performance as the ultimate fallen female, Fantine, so damn relatable, despite the fact it was shot in inconceivable sub-zero conditions in Brussels over a grueling five-month period. One scene, in the opening episode, sees a thoroughly modern-feeling Fantine squatting in the bushes alongside her wing women, discussing the gents on offer. “When our director, Tom (Shankland) was describing it as, ‘You are going to be squatting, having a chat,’ I thought, ‘Well, I can’t say I haven’t done that,’” Lily laughs. “People have been doing this for centuries – that camaraderie between women and men going to the bathroom and having chats, where it’s all about the subtext and the looks.”  

Alas, poor Fantine didn’t have a rival nightclub to the local tavern, or Tinder, in her weaponry to help find a knight in shining armour to rescue her from her inevitable fall. Swiping right isn’t something that interests Lily, either. “I’ve never tried a dating app,” she exclaims with her trademark eyebrows alive with energy. “Lots of my friends have, but it’s just that I don’t know how I would. LA is very much where I spent most of my time growing up, so I know the places I am not going to go to meet somebody and I also realise that when you’re not looking, you find it.”

Lily is grounded, which is no mean feat given that she grew up surrounded by fame as the daughter of the Easy Lover hitmaker, Phil Collins. There’s no name-checking of famous faces, only her closest pals, a pool of Californian friends from Harvard-Westlake School who have enabled her to achieve that much-lauded term: balance. She has worked hard to have her Destiny’s Child ‘Independent Woman’ moment.

“Growing up I never wanted that to be a part of my story,” Lily confides. “Obviously I’m super-proud of my dad; I love my dad, I’m grateful for all the things I’ve learned, but it’s also something I wanted to define as my own. I always wanted to do it myself and for myself. There are so many people who want to do what I do, a name is not going to get you a job, and it shouldn’t. I can look back and be so proud I did it on my own. People assume it’s a lot easier when you have that name, but if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t want to use it, it’s a lot harder.”

Part of Lily taking control of her own narrative involved her penning her memoir, Unfiltered: No Shame, No Regrets, Just Me just under two years ago, something that she regards as the “most cathartic, therapeutic experience, in a way I didn’t anticipate”. In the emotional read, Lily confesses to hacking away at those eyebrows to fit in with the skinny-browed girls at school, details an unnamed emotionally abusive relationship, discusses a long and winding journey with eating disorders, and contains an open letter, forgiving her father, “for not always being there,” during her childhood after moving from Surrey to LA with her mother, Jill Tavelman following her parents’ divorce. For an industry in which personal lives are hidden by a velvet curtain, it was beyond brave.

Reminiscing, Lily details how the book’s direction took an unexpected turn, “I realised I was carrying so much baggage that, when it came to work, I couldn’t take on the baggage of my character. I felt a bit like a fraud to myself if I didn’t unleash – or at least get off my chest – these things, to move on and go into the next phase of my life. In life, when you dig the deepest and talk about the most uncomfortable things, that’s the time you’ll connect with most people because that’s when you’re being the ‘realest’. The hardest things to talk about will always be the most relatable, because no one wants to show them; they’re awkward.”

Used to shedding excess baggage, Lily had to leave everything at the French border to play what is set to become a career-defining role as Fantine. As she proudly scrolls through her phone to show her transformation from debutante darling to shaven-haired dishevelled wench, her enthusiasm is as big as her brows as she details the most testing part of taking on this role. “The material, the location, the temperature,” she admits were the biggest challenges. But it’s clear she relished getting gritty. “It was so perfect, but at one point it was -13°C in Brussels. It was mental preparation of not just understanding the psychology of what she’s going through, but also the gruelling shooting experience that we were all in. Dressed in little material towards the end, it was about pushing through mentally. Obviously, I saw the end in sight. I dive in 110%. If I’m freezing, tired and bruised from shooting, I lean into that with the character.”

In a year where toxic masculinity has led to outpourings of female empowerment, it seems an ideal time to revisit the treatment of this infamous female character; something that isn’t lost on Lily. “When she falls, she falls so hard. But she’s willing to stay down there if it means providing for her child. It’s very poignant over what’s happening in today’s world. When we’re at our lowest, we still have our sense of self and are willing to fight back and use our voice. That really resonated with me.”

How does she feel in the wake of the year where Hollywood finally got woke on the abuse of power? “It’s great to see the camaraderie that’s come from it. Women coming forward with these issues are being embraced. Whether it’s in the pay gap or having more female directors, writers, and making sure there are just as many women and men on movie sets – hopefully one day this won’t even have to be a conversation. That’s my hope that we won’t have to say, ‘’I’m so glad you’re hired because you’re a female. It should be that you are known for your skill level… Right now, it’s fantastic, but it shouldn’t be why a woman is defined as amazing.”

As a result, Lily is feeling more empowered than ever before. “Yeah, I am, 100%,” she says. “I’ve realised that I can’t control what other people think of what I have to say, but I can control how I say it and where it’s coming from. So many women have come out and spoken about things that people would have assumed would have been the end of them. Now it is embraced for us to speak out. I’m attracted so strongly to people who are brave and outspoken and very much themselves, so I thought, ‘Why can’t I be that?’ It takes practice and I’m not fully there yet, but I’m doing my best to take those steps.”

This self-crafted confidence is exactly why Lily was attracted to the challenge of creating and directing her own GLAMOUR shoot, shot on a mobile phone during a fitting with super-stylists Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn. “I love expressing different sides of myself,” she exclaims, referencing her Giambattista Valli gown she wore for her cover. “It’s a process that allows me to constantly surprise myself, rediscover and push myself in ways I wouldn’t have felt comfortable with a couple of years ago.” One thing is for certain, you shouldn’t underestimate this ultimate Hollywood ‘doer’; she curled her own hair and specifically asked for the pictures not to be retouched, too.

Away from Hollywood and couture, Lily will be living her best Cameron Diaz lyf circa The Holiday this Christmas. “It’s my time to switch off from my job, sleep in and be British – I love holing myself away where no one can bother me. I love being in the countryside, outside London, with my mum. We get our tree, we have decorations from when I’m younger. We cook. We have fires and watch old movies,” Lily shares in a manner of an over-excited elf.

It’s safe to say the Christmas cracker that will really bring a bang to your festivities is Lily Collins in Les Misérables. Plus, dear wise men and women, this star with her rare empowering gifts is well worth following, far and wide.
