It was always a little funny to see how theon justifies his actions in acok by appealing to a lack of agency. Each chapter he's more delusional than the previous one. As if the entire first chapter isn't about him cumming to the idea of going back to pyke and proving himself to balon. "Mine, as the victory will be mine, and in time the crown." "The season, the year, the day and I am the man" you are stupid and you chose this. You mightve never wanted this, but you kept pressing on despite knowing the ironborn way, and that's the most important thing

hmmmm. but theon justifies his actions through a lack of agency because a lack of agency is all he's known these past ten years.

i'm not saying his internal narration about having no other choice is right or fair (even before he got to winterfell he murdered todric by accident and then justifies this to himself by saying no no no this is good actually because now my ironmen will know i'm being serious) or even that it's true. we the audience can very clearly see that theon could have made a million different choices. but we the audience have a bird's eye view of theon, his life, and the broader wo5k.

theon has had no choice in any area of his life from ages 10 to 19. he has been a prisoner of war, living with a proverbial sword over his neck on the condition of his estranged father's good behavior (something he has NO WAY of controlling or influencing). theon feels like nothing he could ever do is "right" in the eyes of the starks, who are both his only family and his captors. he shares with us (the audience) that he has this resentment towards ned, cat, and even robb to whom he is closest and who he regards as his brother. theon has no friends or relationships outside of winterfell, and the relationships he has there are all strained and complicated by his status as a highborn pow.

when he reunites with his family for the first time in a decade, emboldened by his feeling of success as robb's war... friend. i was going to say something like robb's right hand but theon isn't anything close to that. robb's war... buddy.... pet... he is met with nothing but derision and scorn from his nuncle, stupid sexy sister, and dad.

yes theon asks reek (a northern stranger who he dug up from the winterfell dungeons and who's scary as all hell!!!!) to kill the miller's wife of acorn water and her two children, then his own men who helped him do that, then to ride east to the dreadfort and bring two hundred men to strengthen his cause. and yes it is head in hands groaning crying screaming levels of frustrating to watch him do this, but i do understand why he keeps telling himself that he has no choice. his whole life he has never had a choice. to realize that he has a choice NOW would be impossible for him. it's just asking more of him than would be possible.

also i know i call theon stupid a lot and he is but this is because i like to pick him up in my mouth and shake him really hard out of affection. i don't actually think he's dumb. short sighted, traumatized, impulsive, and with a crippling lack of self awareness, yes. but he does actually prove himself to be very intelligent. a cunning and effective war strategist, a successful manipulator, and a good investigator. constantly operating through a 10/10 panic attack that he is the cause of, but not dim.

also it's very possible that you know this already considering what website we're on but when i say "you never wanted this, no, but i'm afraid you absolutely did choose it. in a hundred ways, at a hundred thresholds, you pressed onward." i am quoting elias bouchard from the magnus archives season 3 episode 92 nothing beside remains

Losing Natasha had been the worst thing that had happened to Clint Barton.  She had been his best friend and they had done so much to get Bucky back for her, only to have lost her in the end. Worst still was having Bucky come back and having to tell him what happened.  If he’d felt bad, it was nothing compared to what Bucky felt.

Bucky had been riddled with guilt.  One moment he’d been fighting in a battle to save the universe with his girlfriend and best friend and the next thing he knew, everything had changed and Natasha was gone.  The fact she’d died bringing him back - him who was not worthy of any of this - it was almost too much to live with.

So the two men, who had lost so much, had leaned on each other.  And in their grief, something new grew out of it.  Something neither of them had expected.  They’d fallen in love.  It was weird to have a relationship form based on their shared love for another person but it had happened.  And rather quickly they’d gone from supporting each other through grief, to falling in love.

They’d moved out to Brooklyn together, determined to try and just have something normal together and things had been going well.  They had a cat and a dog, and occasionally helped out with a fight, but they’d made a kind of happiness around the grief they felt.  They were playing videogames when there was a knock at the door.

“It doesn’t count as a win if I have to get up,” Bucky said, still using his controller as he went to pull the door open.  He was too focused on the screen to look at who it was and just assumed it was one of the neighbors.  “Hey, what’s up?” he said.

i really do love the daniel x fake rashid dynamic just for how delicious the power dynamics are. the assumed age gap and servitude putting daniel in a position of power that he is not really in at all in dubai in a house of a vampire. but that same assumed dynamic giving “rashid” knowledge that daniel does not have as the personal assistant to a vampire, who is fed on by him, and as daniel assumes, he also sleeps with. Daniel is jealous of this proximity to louis but jealous of “rashid” himself as well, wondering how he tastes.

then of course, the fact this is all a premise. Daniel is in no position of power at all, hes being played with, toyed with, all his private comments and desires are transparently observed by not one but two vampires that have the power of life and death over him.

but they ALLOW this, they allow daniel’s perceived power, his desire, putting themselves in a false submission to him as both an interviewee and a servant, letting him feel this power as a taste, but every time he gets comfortable in it, reminding him that its a game. wonderful truly
