as much as "humans are space orcs" or "otherwise particularly weird/special in some unforeseen way" is fun sometimes i still staunchly feel like it has a tendency to veer into being overly self congratulatory and exceptionalist sometimes.
like a knee jerk overcorrection to the sci-fi trope of "humans are space normies" or "we happen to suck the most"
to me the most realistic outcome, once you assume there are indeed other sapient spacefarers, is
"literally Everyone has things that makes them particularly weird, and some of Everyone's things, both biological and techwise, are scary and impressive in the right light. in fact you Can't make it to being spacefaring and sapient if this isn't the case. natural selection and the Great Filter fundamentally mandate every species at this point to be tenacious, unhinged, highly adaptive Freaqqs in their own way, for better or worse."

What can you tell us about this conworld that your conlangs are spoken in?
Where do I start? There's been a lot of iterations.
At present, it's a very hand-wavy spec-evo eocene Earth analog. There's the one major continent about the size of North America, I think, and it's populated by maybe 10 sapient species, all of which have been ascribed a conlang or have plans for one. In the west on islands and coastal plains, and in temperate rainforests, as well as further North in the tundra, there're derived oxyaenids which speak Tokétok. In the mountains that help form these temperate rainforests is a group of derived early ungulates which speak Varamm. East still in a massive river basin a group of derived testudines speak a sign language still in it's infancy. On the drier east coast there's both a group of derived neornithischians, for which I have a 9yo sketch I'll someday revisit, and a group of derived early carnivorans that speak my current speedlang project Viverraviss. In the south there's highlands with a group of derived scansoriopterygians, which I have 2 old sketches and plans to derive a daughter from N!odzäsä for. With a more global distribution, I have Agyharo for the derived azhdarchids that form insular communities across the continent, and in the surrounding seas ATxK0PT is spoken by derived tunicates. From across the sea comes Tsantuk for the token humanoids, and they have a robust coastal trade network across the continent, though their largest port of call is in the Southern Tokétok lands. There's also an island far to the Northwest where I might put some temnospondyl dragons or something; I have friend who wants to build such a language with me.
I'd share a map, but the only one I have thus far outside my head is in the margins of some old math homework and it's difficult to read.
Techwise the speakers of Tsantuk are somewhere in the age of exploration, and everyone else is very where the rest of the non-European world was at the time varying from loose fission-fusion hunter-gatherer societies to robust civilizations. There's also a touch of magic, but it's still very loose. The spark notes are that climatic events and other natural disasters, whether ephemeral or persistent, have at their core a rift in space. This rift leads to a sort of void filled with unformed energy, kinda like the stem cells of force and matter, that fuels these climatic events. If someone encounters such a rift, they may gain the power to open and close rifts themselves and use that formless energy to power magic that reflects the original rift they encountered. For instance, sailing into and surviving a hurricane might grant storm magic.
It's been a while since I've written anything set in this world, but it's all centred on a presumably Tsantuk speaking fire mage (I'll leave it to your imagine how she came about that) lost in Tokétok lands with no memory how she got there.

One of the current pluralkit devs here, heard about lighthouse today and I absolutely love what you're doing with this!! we've wanted some private forums/journals for a while now and this might be the tool for that.
What did you use to make this site? Techwise I mean. I'm not asking for the source code, just curious as to what stack you used since I'm a webdev nerd and like to look into these kinds of things.
Nw if you'd rather not answer!! Like I said I'm curious. I see a cool thing and want to know how it's made. Seriously, thank you for making this available for others to use!!
Heya! I’m glad you’ve found Lighthouse useful.
As for a stack, we started with PERN, but then we never got around to actually using React on the web side of things. So the stack is more like PEN lol. Postgres-Express-Node. The front end is primarily done with EJS templating, jQuery and/or vanilla JavaScript.
Have a happy and safe holiday!

I also repeat this but it's mostly that Doom's UAC and Hell themes in the older games are more unique than most people know.
With Hell i talked about it a lot:
The evil eye candles
Floating rocks with skulls
Marble
Stone faces of a satyr, gargoyle, lion and old man meaning there's probably other species we don't know of
Flesh and bone, almost as if Hell itself is "alive" or just messing with us just because
Eye switches
Mix of flesh and metal, from the metal pipes stabbing into skin to the giant skull computer switch with screens on the eye sockets
That one piece of skin that was based off someone's knee wound or something
Wood obviously
FIREBLU which could be interpretated differently (Rocks, frozen lava, diamond, fire etc)
That one skybox with twisted skulls or something
And how they're used like when Plutonia had a floating crucifix/cross made of blood as a ceiling sector (Liquids defying gravity)
There might be more worth addressing like how Hell consumes other worlds and mixes them up with its own.
One reason why this diverse Hell is genius is because it fits with the visual diversity of Doom's demons (And why it's cooler that cybernetic demons are native from Hell).
It even suits the classic Doom logo having that blue pipe/yellow brick "dichotomy".
It's as if Hell had potential to be much more, like a shape shifting dimension that can also magically create different kinds of beasts.
(Consider the surrealism/abstraction part when discussing how horror always had a place in Doom or even how to complement the Doomslayer power fantasy)
And because it has metal, it means... it's literally METAL!!!!
But even the UAC theme had some interesting stuff.
Since classic Doom is low-tech, you have stuff like concrete brick walls or blue carpet floors.
And the skybox suggests either the bases inside a glass dome or a terraformed Phobos (Since we all know E1's sky is a photo of China).
Doom is clearly inspired by Aliens but there's something "comfortable" that made me think of Star Trek or specific older sci-fi media.
Specially considering unused sprites of office chairs and that one sector texture implying the 4 main characters of the Doom Bible were playing a cards game.
The low-tech either means we didn't evolve as much as we could've have techwise or we maybe didn't need too.
And this is probably why Doom was that colorfull:
Tumblr media
(Image stolen from Reddit, saw it posted by Ghosthand373)
Most of the colors are a result of the "materials" or "context" of the textures: Metal, brick, flesh, carpet, marble, rock, road and so on.
With D64, UAC seemed to have leaned more on the "industrial/metal" side of things and Phobos no longer looked terraformed/Earthly and Hell embraced a gothic atmosphere that most people like, even if it doesn't have some elements from the classic iteration.
D3 is what i think "generalized" the setting with the gray UAC bases and rocky Hell and then 2016 carried that but with some modern aesthetics (Like the not-so-low-tech sci-fi elements in the UAC) and a still mostly rocky Hell that also took influence from Beksinski.
2016 multiplayer maps do offer some new areas with a bit more different aesthetics at least (And cannot forget the snow/ice area with Vega's base in it of course).
But even then, people wanted more variety and that's why Eternal tried to do more with UAC and Hell while also adding new themes such as Sentinel and Urdak.
It's how we get interesting "set piece" stuff like giant demonic titans carrying temples and being chained to stuff or the BFG10K that blows a hole in Mars.
Hell on Earth obviously evolved because it felt barely explored in D2 and so on.
But there's still a matter of props themselves and textures/materials because classic Doom can inspire in many ways as seen in some fanmade content.
It's also because of how videogames evolved to have more specific locations or rather "landmarks" while older videogame worlds were defined by aesthetics and themes.
But a setting that is composed of modular assets may be more versatile.
Because even besides textures/props leading to different looking levels (Be it officially or fan maps), just the idea of variety can even inspire new custom enemies or creative fan designs in fanart.
In general, the idea of "videogame worlds" feeling "ellastic" if they don't have specific map layouts or geography can relate to how there's always different versions of Peach's castle in Mario or Sonic's Green Hill Zone.
Even in Castlevania, i think it's canon that the castle itself always looks different when it comes back a hundred years, no? Like it's an entity of its own or rather a creature of chaos.
Because one thing is Doom's Hell having a similar logic but another is simply not taking the setting seriously and embracing the reiteration aspect as to why even the UAC looks different at times.

Honestly I love episodes of SG-1 that hint at O’Neill’s intelligence. Like, yeah, most of the time he’s pretending to be a jarhead. But then you have moments like where he remarks facts about ellipses, or getting slightly irritated at Carter explaining velocity stuff.
In fact, what I rather like that, aside from it being a brief “yeah yeah” so not a total snapping, is if you think about it? It honestly makes sense O’Neill knows how velocity is calculated.
While I have no idea what the standard AirForce member needs to know in terms of math, O’Neill was special ops. That means minimal support, riskier than usual situations, and riskier than usual flight maneuvers. Techwise, the planes in the early 2000s were roughly the same if a bit improved from the 80s. That said, he probably trained to fly in the 60s and 70s which means we’re going low tech.
And while most pilots probably don’t need to be doing physics calculations on the fly, special ops may need to not only be used to pulling off risky maneuvers, but in some scenarios, pulling out the pen and paper to ensure a plan can be executed.
All this to say that Jack O’Neill should absolutely have given Carter and some of the other scientists shit for using calculators. Kids these days.

How to get rid of Gemini once and for all
Techwiser explains:
Google has been strategically integrating Gemini into its apps for a while now. While some might love these additions, for others, it can be irritating and even ruin the experience. For example, AI Overviews can be inaccurate and push search results further down, and Google Messages now has a new floating Gemini button. Thankfully, Google allows you to disable Gemini or any other AI features in their apps. Here’s how.
Here's your weekend project.
Don't thank me
