Never will I stop with the steadfast notion that folks in the DPXDC fandom should interact with at least some form of canon DC media.
There are comics, tv shows, radio dramas both old and new, podcasts, movies, magazines, so much shit that intentionally avoiding the media is simply preventing yourself from spawning new ideas and gaining a new appreciation for a fandom that you’re already in.
The Superman Radio Show has episodes 11 minutes long. A lot of the TV shows don’t have episodes that surpass 30 minutes and most are nearly fully clipped on the official DC YouTube channel. The amount of fan made motion comics is astounding. The amount of fanmade animations is equally as incredible.

If I were thrust into a universe full of weird sapient aliens I would probably make them so uncomfortable. Hey dude what’s that thing on your head?! Oh my god are those symbiotes or your offspring or what?!? WHOA!!! WHAT is THAT thing!?!? (technically the answer is a retail worker who’s too tired for this)

You can argue all you like about how it shouldn't matter whether the characters are black or white, men or women, straight or gay, whatever, as long as the story's good. And while you are technically correct - it SHOULDN'T matter - we still live in a time where it's absurdly rare to see THESE type of characters in THESE roles. A black family who acts black in a space adventure is still an egregiously rare thing to behold. And because it's so rare, getting to see them live these characters, say these lines, act this way, and be the main characters of their own story, is still a radical and ground-breaking thing.
Just like it shouldn't matter whether you choose a Male or Female Shepard when you play Mass Effect, seeing a woman deliver those lines the way Fem-Shep does genuinely hits different than hearing it from a man, because of the long history of sexism in sci-fi. It's that much more meaningful coming from the type of person who regularly gets shut out of the genre for such an arbitrary reason as gender. And the same absolutely applies to race.
I can't fucking believe we've advanced some 60 years past Nichelle Nichols first appearing as a main character on Star Trek and we're STILL having this same conversation about how differently it hits and how radical it is to see black characters in primary roles. It shouldn't have to be that way. But it still is, and it should still be celebrated every time.

So I just finished season one and now starting season two of My Dad the Bounty Hunter, and I’m REALLY liking it so far! The pace and choice of wording/speech is a bit iffy for me…but the animation and storyline is fucking AMAZING!! Even the 2D animation in the show is phenomenal. It makes me want to see the show more in 2D!
8/10 I would definitely recommend watching this if you’re ever bored
Also why is Glorlox kindaaaaa 👀

the gathering wind: gregory a. freeman (2013)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
a true story of the sinking of the tall ship bounty in hurricane sandy, the coast guard rescue, and subsequent hearing. i've known about this book since 2020- before i worked with two of the survivors. one was my captain, one my engineer. my caption never spoke of it, my engineer mentioned it in passing when we had safety talks, drills, or if someone brought up some sort of shipboard incident that involved a friend in the industry if it hit particularly close to home.
i'm glad i waited to read it. it's always really difficult reading about modern tall ship wrecks/deaths/etc. when aboard a tall ship- it all just seems a little too real. the community is so small that even if you don't know anyone involved, you know their heart. you know their passion and drive and love of their work. their deep connection and commitment to their ship, and most importantly their devotion to their fellow crew. i know that that devotion would extend both ways if i were ever to meet them. working on tall ships provides a unique set of experiences separate from shoreside realities that only others in the community will ever fully understand.
however...
personally knowing the people you're reading about is different. i know when they prefer to go to bed and when they wake. their preference in condiments, the stories they tell of their family and friends. what makes them laugh, what sends them into a stressed frenzy, the treasures they hold dear and the tales that those objects hold. even though i never knew them outside of our bubble, i know their life and they know mine; if only in the moments we shared at the present.
we share so much as shipmates that it's strange to learn about such a pivotal point in their lives from a book, but after reading i completely understand why.
it's such a gift to be able to get a glimpse into the events that make up my former shipmates without them having to relive the trauma or bear the burden that would have come with my curiosity.
anyway, please read, and as always
don't forget your old shipmates, fally rally rally rally ri-oh.

My Dad the Bounty Hunter Review
Tumblr media
My Dad the Bounty Hunter is a coming-of-age animated sci-fi adventure series by Everett Downing Jr. and Patrick Harpin. Both have worked in the animation industry for many years, often as storyboarders or writers. However, this is their first series they have created on their own. This review will have spoilers.
Reprinted from Pop Culture Maniacs and Wayback Machine. This was the twenty-fourth article I wrote for Pop Culture Maniacs. This post was originally published on February 14, 2023.
This animated series centers on the story of Terry (voiced by Laz Alonso), a Black father who has a secret job: he is a bounty hunter named Sabo Bok. One day, his children, annoyed by his constant disappearances, stowaway in his flying car, and find themselves in a spaceship. Terry is forced to care for his precocious daughter Lisa (voiced by Priah Ferguson), and his nerdy, but anxious, son Sean (voiced by Jecobi Swain). All the while he faces his former business partner, Gorlox (voiced by Rob Riggle), and the Conglomerate, represented by The Fixer (voiced by Jim Rash) who is a bit like Agent Smith in the Matrix franchise.
Personally, I was not planning on watching this series, and knew even less about it, as no one has even bothered to create a Wikipedia page for it! In an effort to watch more shows made by Black creators, I decided to give this series a chance, and I was impressed by what I watched. The voice actors and animation was top notch, as is the music selection.
In some ways, My Dad the Bounty Hunter felt familiar. That's because voice actors like Yvette Nicole Brown, Kari Wahlgen, Yvonne Orji, Christian Lanz, Keith Ferguson, Andrew Morgado, and SungWon Cho, who voice Krs, Lootbat, Tess and other assorted characters in this series, are all well-known voice actors. They are known for their roles in The Ghost and Molly McGee, Velma, Fairfax, Elena of Avalor, Victor and Valentino, Craig of the Creek, High Guardian Spice, Gen:Lock, and The Cuphead Show.
Furthermore, the plot line of this series reminded me, in more ways than one, of episodes of Dogs in Space and Cleopatra in Space, which share some of the same voice actors. It even made me think of the first season of Star Wars: The Bad Batch, when Omega and the Bad Batch are on the run from various bounty hunters who want to kill or capture Omega.
Since the series is for all ages, there rarely blood spilled, just some laser battles, fights, and the like. Sure, no one is invincible, but also, no one gets seriously hurt, apart from Terry crash-landing on a planet and some scuffles. There aren't assassinations on the scale of the Immediate Murder Professionals in Helluva Boss or mass murder akin to the season one finale of Invincible.
All in all, I found My Dad the Bounty Hunter a fun watch. Even so, I would have preferred, just as I did with Season 2 of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, for 1-2 episodes to air every week, rather than all the episodes dropping at once on February 9th. That would allow for more time to take in what is happening in each episode. On the other hand, the series almost seemed to be designed for a binge, since a lot happens in a short period of time, assisted by music and fast-pacing. The series was undoubtedly affected by the fact that, reportedly, 99% of it was produced "at-home" because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
youtube
There was nothing to dislike when it comes to the show's cast. This is despite the fact that this is Laz Alonso's first major voice role, while Jecobi Swain and Priah Ferguson are new to voice acting. They only voice characters in Hamster & Gretel and Firebuds. The same can be said for the more seasoned voice actors, including, apart from those I mentioned earlier, Jamie Chung (as Vax) and Maddie Taylor (as Torga). There are other new voice actors such as Leslie Uggams (as Grandma), Everett Downing Jr. (as Bogdog), and Devin Bright (as Player 2). This gives the series life and makes the characters much more relatable.
Just as The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder is likely to garner a Black audience, the same is the case for My Dad the Bounty Hunter. It is designed for families, especially, like many other all-ages series currently out there. In addition, characters like Lisa, who is sassy and intelligent, may become beloved. Some might even connect to the fact that she organized a gambling den at her local school and held high-stakes poker games. She is like Maya in The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, in that she when she gets passionate and determined, no one can stop her. In fact, Lisa becomes skilled with a sword, and plays a vital role, especially when helping her dad out of some tough situations, as does her brother Sean.
As I've said in other reviews, 3-D animation is not always my favorite. For instance, I think the Tales of Arcadia can be a bit hard to watch at times due to the animation style. However, the animation is done very well in this series. It is as strong as the flowing animation in D4DJ. Computer generated images can be good if they are animated with a distinct style, but traditional, 2-D animation, is just as good. The series was supposed to be 2-D originally, but it cost less to do 3-D, as they didn't have to build sets, while flashback scenes were 2-D, which separated "the present from the past" as Harpin noted.
Due to the fact that My Dad the Bounty Hunter is only 10 episodes, there isn't much time for lore, or even exploration of everyone's backstory. There's some backstory given for Terry, Tess (Terry's wife), and a bit for Lisa, but that's it. Even so, this doesn't take away from some of the messages in the series, emphasizing the importance of family, togetherness, and overcoming obstacles. This creates a wholesome series which sticks with you, episode-to-episode.
This fades away when the story centers on brutal exploitation of the Chillas by the Conglomerate. These creatures are imprisoned and forced to mine minerals for no pay (i.e. as slaves), with the materials only used to make the Conglomerate that much richer. Unlike Qui-Jon Jinn, who only freed Anakin from slavery on Tatooine, Lisa, with the help of Vax and her comrades, frees all of them. She ultimately convinces her dad, Terry, to side with her, once he realizes he is doing the wrong thing.
Watching My Dad the Bounty Hunter made me think of the exploitation of the worms in Futurama, especially exemplified by Slurms MacKenzie, who caused the caves to collapse, when he parties one last time. There are similarities to the Ewoks in Return of the Jedi in more ways than one, or rescue missions in Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Bad Batch, which ends up freeing those imprisoned, often by the Galactic Empire, even if it puts their lives in jeopardy.
youtube
The season one finale of My Dad the Bounty Hunter leaves the door open for more seasons. It remains to be seen if Netflix will go that route, or whether it will treat it like City of Ghosts, a curiosity which executives deemed as needing no continuation. I remain hopeful that despite all the shenanigans going on at Netflix right now, they will renew the series.
After all, since the series is based on the dynamics within the family of co-creator Everett Downing Jr., there is likely more to explore in that realm. There are other plotlines which could be told in a second season. Perhaps Lisa will have a boyfriend, or even a girlfriend, and family conflicts may erupt, changing this from a happy family-friendly series into a more mature one.
Even so, it is likely, more than not, that a second season would continue to portray a loving Black family, and have additional sci-fi elements, which the creators said they incorporated into the series the best they could. When asked about another season, one of the co-creators said he would like to focus on Tess and "give her a shot in the captain’s seat."
Furthermore, since the first season of My Dad the Bounty Hunter was said to be a "love letter to animation, science fiction, and Black families" rolled into a wild action-comedy, it is possible that another season would go even further. There is a lot which can be done with animation, unlike any other medium, which makes it apt for storytelling. Of course, not every animated series is superb, and some are subpar. But, when animation is done well, it shines like nothing else. This series shines.
This series is unique, even on Netflix. While the streaming platform hosts shows like Princess Power, Ada Twist Scientist, Dogs in Space, Hilda, The Dragon Prince, Bee and Puppycat, and Dragon Age: Absolution, nothing even comes close to this series. The same can be said for the upcoming Agent Elvis and Mulligan.
The only comparison with this series is on other streaming platforms, specifically in the Star Wars franchise, a flagship grounding Disney+ in the streaming wars. Perhaps, My Dad the Bounty Hunter is being used to compete with those series. Although, if that is the case, it would be absurd, since the other series are much longer lived, and likely have more money behind them.
In the end, while My Dad the Bounty Hunter is not my favorite series ever, I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and I'd definitely recommend it, as it can be watched in its entirety during a morning, or an afternoon.
My Dad the Bounty Hunter is currently streaming on Netflix.

Today’s review: Black Series Miggs Mayfeld (series 1)
Once again, a figure I picked up on sale. InDemandToys put him up for sale for £7.99, but given I had so many points saved from preordering Armada Optimus and Megatron I managed to save the money on postage and then some so he was only £7 overall.
I was really glad when Mayfeld returned for Mandalorian season 2. Of all the mercs in his group I always thought he was awesome. His costume design and unique backpack pistol remind me of the designs used for the old charge bounty hunters and, frankly, we don’t see enough of those designs like Dengar and Greedo in Star Wars anymore that make each character instantly recognisable.
The figure itself is really good. He is nicely poseable with plenty of articulation across his limbs and torso. The only limitation is the elbow joints. These actually look a bit odd when bent as they’re trying to replicate skin tight clothing.
Accessories are simple for this figure. he comes with 4 identical pistols and a backpack that holds a non removable 5th pistol. My only gripe with this backpack is that the arm cannot swivel much and if you move the harness too much it will fall out of its peg.
All in I give Mayfeld 8/10 - He’s the better rendition of the character in my opinion, your only other option is the same head on a Stormtrooper’s body.

Chris: The Bounty is a retelling of the Mutiny on the Bounty supposedly based on historical fact, the result is a film nowhere as good as the 1962 version despite a plethora of stars including Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson, Liam Neeson, and many more so watch if you want to see the stars otherwise see the 1962 version, Watch: When Free.

I finished watching Teenage Bounty Hunters some days ago, knowing it had been cancelled, but I loved it anyway.
And after watching the first episode, I did wonder if the mom, Debbie, had a twin. Because I figured if the woman in the wanted poster was Debbie, then the police would already know to arrest her, or that Bowser would do it. Weirdly enough, Bowser didn't even pay much attention to the wanted poster until that big moment in episode nine. If he had, he would have believed Debbie was the woman in the poster much earlier. Also, I considered the possibility that the woman wasn't even Debbie, or her twin. Because their actress looks so different in the poster.
Maddie Phillips, who plays Sterling, is a great actress. I love how expressive her face is. When Sterling is feeling something, happiness, anger, etc. you can really tell. Sterling was also my favorite character.
I am bummed out the twins are actually cousins. On a related note, I wondered if their twin telepathy was actually real. It seemed like a figment of their imagination until the final episode, when Blair knew something that she would have only known if she telepathically communicated with Sterling. That was a brilliant moment. I love how it proved that the twin telepathy thing undeniably real. Before that, it seemed ambiguous on whether or not it was real. When Debbie and Dana had their own telepathy moment, it was unexpected, and that's what made it funnier.
I liked the girls better as sisters. They're still sisters, of course, but I wish the cousins twist hadn't been included. Also, I liked how they actually seemed like real siblings. The way they would argue was so sibling-like, especially in the intro of the last episode, where Blair says Sterling's hair looks stupid. And Sterling says Blair's face looks bad. Then they growl at each other. I love that scene, including the moment in it when the girls arrive home.
I wish the show had focused more on bounty hunting. Sterling, Blair, and Bowser were awesome as a group. Plus, I loved the girls' bond with him. I also noticed that Bowser was closer to Blair than he was with Sterling. His "that's my girl" line after she shot the lights in that one episode was heartwarming, though. And him calling Blair "baby girl" and comforting her over the phone in episode nine was sweet, and he did all of that while he had a job to do, but he decided to help Blair anyway. But I do hate how he denied that the girls were like family to him during his conversation with Yolanda in the last episode. That was a jerk move. Are you really going to tell me that he didn't love Sterling and Blair?
Something I don't like about the show: it wasn't that funny. Blair's first boyfriend crying after he talks about how his mom is his soulmate was probably the funniest moment, but this show is hardly a comedy. There's not a lot of laugh-out-loud moments.
Bowser also gave a helpful speech to Blair about whether or not the afterlife is real. So much better than that cliché "Dying will be like it was for you before you were born," which I never found comforting. Unfortunately, that's the first line people go to when they're attempting to comfort someone who is afraid of dying. It sucks.
That speech Bowser gave happens in the strip club episode, which was pretty cool. I always go back to Cherry's dance routine, not because I'm a pervert or anything, but because that scene is so fun to watch. And I love Sterling's dance movements she does in the background, especially when Bowser sits back down after he thinks Cherry is going to run away, and Sterling bobs her body up and down. Also, the song that plays throughout that scene makes me love it even more.
And about Dana, Sterling's real mom. You can tell Dana genuinely cares about her, like when she wants a hug from Sterling in the truck, and how she affectionately calls Sterling "Muffin". Also, I think she kidnapped Sterling instead of Blair because she wanted to finally reunite with her and spend time with her.
I'm depressed TNB got cancelled. That plot twist at the end raised so many questions, ones that will never be answered. And things didn't end well. Sterling is back with Luke instead of April. And Blair and Miles aren't a couple anymore. And the girls seemed pretty sad when they found out they weren't sisters. We will never watch a scene showing them accepting the fact they are cousins, but still seeing each other as sisters anyway.
Also, people hated the title. Why? If I had to come up with a better one, I wouldn't be able to. It sounds fine just the way it is. The original title was Slutty Teenage Bounty Hunters, which is pretty bad, because the girls were hardly slutty, and that title would have been too long. Plus, it would have sounded awkward to say to people.
And Blair called herself depressed during her last scene with Miles. Blair didn't seem depressed at all. I never got the impression that she was deeply sad about her life. If Blair is supposed to be depressed, that could have been shown better.
It was pretty heartwarming when Sterling and Blair told each other I love you in their telepathic conversation in the last episode, and apologized for what they said to each other in the intro of this episode. That was sweet. I can't deny that TNB had some nice heartwarming moments, which I love to see in fiction and in real life.
I like how clever the characters are. Like when Bowser makes Sterling shoot the light bulbs so the naked skip can step on the shattered glass and fall. And Sterling's method of getting Blair to track her down in the final episode. Plus, how Sterling gives Dana false information about the family dog to confirm that Dana isn't Debbie. I love seeing characters do genuinely intelligent things.
TNB is a good show. I won't call it a great one, but it was pretty enjoyable. But the flaws were irritating enough to make me not give it a higher rating. I think the thing I hated most about it was that it wasn't that funny. Still, there was a lot I loved about the show.
3 out of 5 stars.

Review: Star Wars: Bounty Hunter
LucasArts released a decent Star Wars game back in 2002 that, despite a great story, suffered from its control scheme and ambitious technical visuals. Fast-forward to 2024 and Aspyr has managed to clean up Star Wars: Bounty Hunter into the product it was always meant to be. Despite its Legends status, the story remains a strong aspect of the game, diving deep into Jango Fett’s character and further fleshing him out after his all-too brief appearance in Attack of the Clones. The updates to gameplay make Bounty Hunter feel modern, fluid and accessible, though the legacy controls are still there for purists.

My quest to watch 80 x 80s movies continues with, The Bounty.
The Bounty is a classic movie that should be on everyone's watch list.
The movie has an incredible cast (I guarantee you'll spend half the movie spotting big name actors), fantastic sets and locations, plus it is based on a set of real life events that makes an interesting and very entertaining story.
First time I saw this movie I was a teenager, and was behind the character and Fletcher Christian and his hatred of Lieutenant Bligh. All these years later, I'm now much older and rewatch this movie and I'm think how wrong was I! Lieutenant Bligh is the hero of this movie! What a fantastic character of man, and what an absolute lowlife Mr Christian was.
The Bounty is such a great movie, and really interesting how age changes your perspective on it the story. Highly recommend, and should be, like I said at the start, on everybody's watch list. In fact  it should be on everybody's watch list twice. Once when you are young, then once again when you hit your older years.
