Director: Tod Browning Cinematographer: Leonard Smith Editor: Frederick Y. Smith Composer: Franz Waxman Writers: Tod Browning, Guy Endore, Garrett Fort, Erich von Stroheim Cast: Lionel Barrymore, Rafaela Ottiano, Maureen O'Sullivan, Frank Lawton, Emil Coulvet, Rollo Lloyd, Grace Ford
Tumblr media
Plot: A man wrongfully convicted of murder seeks revenge using a chemical that shrinks people.
Review: Despite a silly premise and some tonal issues, this film largely succeeds due to fun visuals and an engaging lead.
Overall Rating: 3.5/5
Tumblr media
Story: 3/5 - The central idea is corny and the first few scenes almost feel like they're from another film, but much of this is overshadowed by moments of genuine tension and emotion.
Performances: 4/5 - Barrymore is great as a wrongfully convicted man who longs for both revenge and to reconcile with the daughter he left behind.
Cinematography: 3.5/5 - Not as striking as prior Browning films, but still interesting.
Tumblr media
Editing: 3.5/5
Music: 3.5/5 - Not amazing, but subtle and fitting in a way many soundtracks from this era weren't.
Effects: 3.5/5 - The effects used to make people look tiny fluctuate in terms of quality, but are mostly fun and effective.
Sets: 4/5
Costumes, Hair, & Make-Up: 4/5 - Lavond (Barrymore)'s disguise as an elderly woman is surprisingly convincing.

So, in the credits of The Devil-Doll, it is mentioned that the film is based on a book: Burn, Witch, Burn! by Abraham Merritt. I figured that a bonkers movie is probably based on a bonkers book and therefore it would be worth seeing if I could find it. Since we live in an age of wonders in terms of how easy it is to acquire obscure old genre fiction, I found an ebook of it for 99¢ and immediately purchased it. I'm now about 2/3 of the way through.
The book is indeed pretty bonkers but honestly the most bonkers thing is still the film, because it is "based on" this book in the same way that the 1935 Black Cat is "based on" the story by Poe. Here are the things that the book and movie have in common so far:
The basic idea of tiny doll assassins which are animated by another person's will
A character named Madame Mandelip who runs a toy store
A character named Laschna
That's it! No Count of Monte Cristo-esque revenge plot, no cross-dressing, no mad scientists shrinking people, no sweet family drama that feels like it's from another story, no Paris setting - all of that is original to the movie.
The protagonist of the book is a doctor in New York who has been hired by the head of a gangster organization to figure out and cure the mysterious malady that has afflicted his right hand man. Through the course of investigation (and several deaths), the doctor and the gangsters figure out that the culprit is Madame Mandelip, who runs a sinister toy shop, and appears to be a witch who steals people souls to put them into dolls. Actual dolls, not shrunken people.
Look, I like the movie that we got but would I also like to watch a movie about Prohibition-era New York gangsters fighting a soul-stealing witch who has tiny doll assassins? Oh my god, absolutely.
The book is very fun and I'm very glad that the movie pointed me towards it - I'm looking forward to finding more of Mr Merritt's writing. But surely there is a point at which you have to admit that you are not adapting a book at all, but have just stolen a single character name and plot point to write your own story.

Mark of the Vampire (1935)

The complete list of films featured in 2021′s “31 Days of Oscar” marathon
What follows is the exhaustive list of all 403 short- and feature-length films featured on this blog over the last thirty-one days for the 31 Days of Oscar marathon. This number is up from last year’s count of 327 and is the second-highest number of films I have ever featured in this marathon (behind the 410 films from 2016). Despite the number, this remains only a fraction of the nearly 5,000 films that have been nominated for Academy Awards. This year’s marathon was harder to plan than usual due to the fact it was presented in alphabetical order - with the exception of any write-ups I did.

Timeline of Albert's life:
* Born April 26th, 1867 as the youngest of a set of triplets, he is born with an odd birthmark.
* Summer 1870, when Albert is three his father dies from drinking the elixir of eternal life.
* Spring 1876, Albert is 9 when his sister Emma pushes him under a tree when he tries to take a butterfly she catches and his brother Samuel shoots a beehive down onto his head, causing a permanent scar to form. Mr. Crow appears and says "Poor children. Their lives will be full of misery, but their legacy will be of great importance."
* Spring 1885, Albert is 18 when he is noted to have multiple masks that can mess with nature. They are the blue mask, the white mask, and the moon mask. It is also implied he wears them to hide his birth-marked and scarred face. He is given the butterfly he wanted all those years ago and he kills it.
* Fall 1891, Albert is 24 when he gets his pumpkin mask as well as when he lures his nephew frank (son of his sister Emma) to the well and drops him down there.
* Winter 1895, Albert is 28 when he is in a wedding photo for his brother Samuel and his wife Ida (whom he is in love with).
* Summer 1896, Albert is 29 when his sister commits suicide after not finding her son Frank.
* Winter 1896, Albert is 29 when he plays "the lying game" with his mother Mary, his brother, and his brother's wife. It is revealed he is in love with Ida, and he keeps a picture of her inside his coat pocket. He claims the devil tarot card, and when Mr. Crow appears at the end with the deer skull, wears it.
*Summer 1904, Albert is 37 when he plays in the family band with Samuel, Ida, and their son Leonard. Mary is revealed to be dead.
*Summer 1904, Albert is 37 when he kills both Samuel and Ida with voodoo dolls.
* Summer 1909, Albert is 42 when he uses alchemy to make his daughter Rose, using his sperm, Ida's egg, a potion, and water.
* Fall 1924, Albert is 57 when he is seen taunting his nephew Frank in the well, as well as having his hand get stabbed.
* Fall 1926, Albert is 59 when he plays chess with a freed Frank and he gets choked to death. His brain is then removed.
*Spring 1935, Albert's daughter and two nephews use the various body parts of the family to ressurect his dead great uncle William Vanderboom into the body of his granddaughter Laura Vanderboom.

Dwight Iliff Frye (born Fry; February 22, 1899 – November 7, 1943) was an American character actor of stage and screen. He is best known for his portrayals of neurotic, murderous villains in several classic Universal horror films, such as Renfield in Dracula (1931) and Fritz in Frankenstein (1931).
Frye was born in Salina, Kansas and studied for a career in music and first appeared as a concert pianist.[1] In the 1920s, he made his name as a stage actor, often in comedies. In 1924, he played the Son in a production of Luigi Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author.[2]
While he had a few minor comedic roles in silent pictures, with the coming of sound Frye soon became known for playing villains. Nicknamed "The Man with the Thousand-Watt Stare" and "The Man of a Thousand Deaths", he specialized in the portrayal of mentally unbalanced characters, including his signature role, the madman Renfield in Tod Browning's 1931 version of Dracula.
Later that same year, he played the hunchbacked assistant Fritz in Frankenstein. Also in 1931, Frye portrayed Wilmer Cook (the "gunsel") in the first film version of Dashiell Hammett's The Maltese Falcon. He had a featured role in the horror film The Vampire Bat (1933) in which he played Herman, a half-wit suspected of being a killer. He had memorable roles in The Invisible Man (1933) as a reporter, and in The Crime of Dr. Crespi (1935).
In Bride of Frankenstein (1935), he played Karl. The part was originally much more substantive; many of Frye's additional scenes were part of a subplot but were cut to shorten the running time and appease the censors. One of the deleted scenes was that of Karl killing a Burgomaster, portrayed by E. E. Clive. Nothing remains of these scenes except still photographs included in a Universal Studios DVD release of the film. He played similar characters in The Ghost of Frankenstein (1942) and Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man (1943); another appearance in Son of Frankenstein (1939) was deleted prior to release. Also in the 1930s, he appeared in two films starring James Cagney: The Doorway to Hell (1930), as a hit man, and Something to Sing About (1937), as a fussy hairdresser.
During the early 1940s, Frye alternated between film roles and appearing on stage in a variety of productions ranging from comedies to musicals, as well as appearing in a stage version of Dracula. During World War II, he made a contribution to the war effort by working nights as a tool designer for Lockheed Aircraft.
On November 7, 1943, Frye died of a heart attack at the age of 44 while travelling by bus in Hollywood, a few days before he was scheduled to begin filming the biopic Wilson. He is interred in Glendale's Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Glendale.
American rock band Alice Cooper wrote and recorded a tribute track to Dwight Frye entitled "The Ballad of Dwight Fry" (intentionally dropping the last "e") that was included on their 1971 LP Love It to Death.
On stage, this song would be portrayed with Cooper in a straitjacket trying to escape, and finally breaking free at the end of the song to strangle the nurse with the ties.
Devil Doll's 1990 album, Eliogabalus, features the photographed likeness of Dwight Frye in one of its booths.

You’re In For A Scare
Alternatively, I love horror films and giving out film recommendations. Have a horror rec list.
Note: Horror films have the potential to be triggering, please do your research if you’re unsure about a film. Doesthedogdie is a good source to find out potential triggers in any film. If you’re looking for analysis based horror content I highly recommend the youtube channel Dead Meat as well as the Dead Meat podcast.
