Back from seeing The Equalizer 3. Unc was back giving the bad guys that work yet again, this time in Italy. (I may have to visit there at some point) It was definitely more bloody and violent than the previous 2 🤯. It was nice to see Denzel & Dakota Fanning reunited and it was nice lil callback to the first one.

The Mosley Review: The Equalizer 3
Tumblr media
Very seldom do film trilogies realize what type of genre they belong to and stick with it. The standard is to go big in the sequel and by the third film, pull out all the stops and have a major blast of a send off. Its a common downfall for trilogies that aren’t designed for that to do make that mistake. Its extremely rare for a franchise to circle back around to what made the first film fantastic and scale back down to a slower, smaller and more personal story. That is what this film did and it was a refreshing return of an almost forgotten style of storytelling. What I loved is the build up to the action and how precise it still was with every movement of the camera and brutal yet efficient execution the titular character dealt. The story itself isn't as earth shattering or epic as most would expect and that was its strong suit. It may come off familiar and stereotypical in many ways, but that didn't stop the film from being fun and exciting. The action in the film was great and I loved the cause and effect approach that most action have films have forgotten how to achieve. There is a reason for the carnage and doesn't have to involve a massive body count by the end.
Tumblr media
Denzel Washington returns as the franchise hero Robert McCall and he hasn't skipped a beat. He is still that secretive, clean and precise avenger we all love but this time we get to see something that I want more characters to have. In this film, the actions of his life catch up to him and makes him come to grips with his vitality. I loved that for once he is actually looking for a peaceful life away from the world. It was a beautiful and warm ending for Robert that ties directly back to the first film. Dakota Fanning joins the franchise as CIA analyst Emma Collins and she was fantastic. The instant chemistry between her and Robert was awesome and wholesome. I liked her willingness to get into the investigative side of her job as this was her first major case. As a side note, its almost been 20 years since Denzel and Dakota have been on screen together and that chemistry and friendship is felt the moment they’re on screen together. David Denman was good as her CIA Operative partner Frank Conroy even if he's there just to showcase the international gravity of the situation and drive the exposition of the story forward. Remo Girone was great and loveable as Enzo Arisio. He really brings out the warmer side of Robert that I don't think he's seen in a long time and helps him appreciate the meaning of peace. Eugenio Mastrandrea was good as the town Marshal Gio Bonucci. He gets put through the ringer in the film and I loved that he never faltered. Andrea Dodero was great as your typical small time gangster Marco Quaranta. He is instantly despicable and its a testament to his excellent acting. Andrea Scarduzio was awesome and venomous as his older brother Vincent. I loved his vicious nature and his intensity once Robert comes on to his radar. The payoff in the conflict between was so satisfying and personal.
Tumblr media
Marcelo Zarvos takes over as the composer this time around and he did a excellent job highlighting the beauty in the film and puncuating the action. The smooth, tense and slow building music to the action never over took the scenes, but the score really sores in the moments with the towns people. I loved the intimate way Italy is shown and how it highlights the food and its people. It was quite tranquil against the blood soaked action sequences. As I said before, the second film stayed true to the tone of the first film, but it quickly started to stray and become about the action set pieces. This film brings it all back and wraps up the story in a heartfelt way that may leave you wanting more, but doesn't over stay its welcome. I truly enjoyed this film and if you loved the first 2, then you'll enjoy this one. Let me know what you thought of the film or my review in comments below. Thanks for reading!

Denzel Washington Takes Justice to Italy in 'The Equalizer 3'
The Equalizer series has been a staple for reliable action and dynamic performances from Denzel Washington. The third entry into the series may be the best one yet. There are plenty of reasons as to why.
The first reason this was such a great movie is it felt like a conclusion to McCall's story. Perhaps they will return to the character as that decision is way above me, but for me personally, this felt like a fitting conclusion. You can always force the character back into a situation that calls for his particular set of skills, but it would feel exactly what it is, forced.
This one felt like it had the most stakes. While the other two were bankable action films, this one felt more like the complete package. Emotional storyline, innocent people trapped in a vicious cycle and a man lost trying to prove to himself and others that he is a good man. It genuinely had a beginning, middle, and ending act that all resonated for many reasons.
Tumblr media
One very cool thing this movie did is it reunited Denzel Washington with Dakota Fanning. The two starred in the 2004 movie Man on Fire. Now, almost 20 years later, they star together in this film, proving just how awesome they both truly are at their craft. Denzel has always been a mainstay as far as reliability, and Dakota Fanning has proven herself time and time again as she grew up on screen.
One last thing this film had that was truly capitvating was the setting of Italy. It was truly breathtaking to see visuals of the Italian countryside and the architecture. From start to finish, this was all you could ask for to be entertained. An easy to follow plotline, some tremendous acting on display, and a conclusion that very well should serve as a send-off to the character.

My dad seems to think that “character development” is code for “a really boring movie” and that the Equalizer films don’t have any of that nonsense.
Hm.
Robert McCall is back! This time he goes to Sicily for a mission, but gets wounded. On his escape he crashes by the coast side town of Altamonte in Naples, where he slowly recovers thanks to the help of the local doctor and friendly townspeople. But it turns out that the town is being harassed by a criminal empire, so Robert is back to equalizing the heck out of some douchebags. On the ride is Collins, a CIA employee who picked up when Robert called in the Sicilian operation, and she’s trying to figure out how all of this–the criminals menacing Altamonte and the drug operation in Sicily–connects together.
Considering that I’ve seen this advertised as the final installment in the series (which is disputed–the director has admitted that he isn’t against making sequels or prequels), I thought that this one would ultimately prove itself to be more complex and nuanced than the previous two movies. Not so! The movie is basically like the previous two in tone, but with less side character arcs, and this time it’s in Italy.
The result is not bad at all, of course–you get exactly what you’ve paid for. You want to watch Denzel Washington be a nice guy who treats everyone respectfully until they prove themselves to be evil douchebags? And then watch him mow through those douchebags like it’s nothing? Yeah, Equalizer 3 has got you covered.
That being said, I can’t help but think that because this movie is just more of what you’re expecting, it’s a little anticlimactic? It isn’t as if Robert struggles with most of his fights. And it’s not just that, it’s that the final fight with the big boss of this gang is over pretty quickly. I kept thinking that we’d get something else afterward, and we just… don’t. It’s over after that. It’s cool, I only thought it could definitely be cooler.
So no, it doesn’t feel final. It’s not a bad place to end the series; however, nothing about it screams that the series has to end here. Or even that it particularly wants to.
It’s fun, but it’s also safe and it’s not going to challenge anyone’s ideas, or provide any meaningful outlooks on life. Which can be fine, but recognize that it’s sort of a power fantasy about being able to hyper assassinate villains without any real risk to one’s personal safety, because he’s just that much of a badass.
And so yeah, I had an enjoyable experience watching this movie. But even more than the last two Equalizer films, it feels like junk food. A morally righteous mega super warrior takes out the gangsters bothering the good townspeople without any hindrances because he’s just that awesome. It’s fine for entertainment, I guess. I don’t find it particularly memorable though, especially compared to the first two. The first one has Robert come out of his retirement to wreck vengeance on evildoers. The second has a ton of unnecessary subplots, that still develop Robert as a character, helping people in ways other than killing their oppressors, though in a heavy-handed way.
It’s fine, but it’s forgettable compared to the last two. The most memorable thing about this film is its setting. You’ll be happy enough with this movie if you liked the last two, I suppose.

[The following review contains SPOILERS; YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!]
Tumblr media
For the majority of its running time, The Equalizer 3—the (allegedly) final chapter of Antoine Fuqua’s cinematic adaptation of the 1980s television series—is a rather generic, conventional thriller. Which is, of course, perfectly fine; indeed, there’s a certain elegance in its simplicity. The lean, economical story dispenses with extraneous fat and bloat, keeping the pace brisk and breezy. The screenplay utilizes familiar tropes and clichés as a sort of narrative shorthand—the setup is reminiscent of such classic westerns as Shane and A Fistful of Dollars, the climax is a slasher flick that feels slightly less guilty about rooting for the killer, the antagonists could have been plucked straight out of any modern crime drama—allowing the filmmakers to emphasize what truly matters: spectacular stunts, grotesque gore effects, and the faux-philosophical musings of a warrior poet that is, at the very least, more articulate than John Rambo.
There is, however, a single transcendent moment that elevates the entire experience. It isn’t an action sequence—heck, it isn’t even particularly suspenseful or exciting. There’s no fancy fight choreography, no bloodshed, no explosions—just a character exploring his environment. Protagonist Robert McCall (Denzel Washington, personifying a cold, calculating professionalism evocative of Jean-Pierre Melville’s Le Samouraï) wanders the quaint streets and narrow alleyways of the picturesque seaside community where he has been convalescing while recovering from a near fatal gunshot wound. He has no concrete goal, nor does he encounter any immediate danger; the only significant obstacle is a steep stone staircase. Naturally, ascending these steps is an arduous process considering his hobbled condition. Without the support of his cane, the climb would be impossible; with it, it’s still laborious. An elderly woman passing in the opposite direction advises him to take it slow; eventually, though, he succumbs to fatigue and sits down to catch his breath.
Tumblr media
This scene is not, strictly speaking, “necessary”—it neither advances the plot nor ties into the central conflict. Nevertheless, its presence enriches the movie, illuminating our otherwise invulnerable antihero’s seldom-glimpsed humanity. In this current era of “lean-back content,” that glimmer of empathy is a rare gem worth treasuring.
