Brain Curd #259
Brain Curds are lightly edited daily writing - usually flash fiction and sometimes terrible on purpose.
He's gonna be Frank with you. Read the rest of The Frank Program here on Tumblr!
The studio was crowded, yet quiet, packed full of people in folding chairs who ostensibly cared for Frank’s wellbeing: Chuck Tangent, his legs crossed and his hands behind his head; Big Mike, tapping his foot and checking his watch; Chad Graves, legs wide and leaning forward in his chair; Dr. Heather Jung, who scribbled on her notebook (she was paid to be there); and even a slightly unfamiliar looking Daryl, who hadn’t set foot in the building for nearly three months and in the entire time hadn’t even considered a haircut.
Anita barged through the door, steaming mad. “I have no idea where he’s gone. I told him to be here at nine o’clock.”
“Yep,” Big Mike said. “That’s what you get for trusting an addict to walk himself to his own intervention.”
“I didn’t tell him it was an intervention! I said all his best friends would be here to welcome him back!”
“Listen, Anita… Frank may be an idiot, but he’s not stupid. He probably ran off to some crack den. Good luck finding him again.”
Anita sighed. “Daryl, I am so sorry you have to see your father go through this.”
Daryl’s tired eyes showed no sign of relief, nor remorse. He barely reacted at all, just inhaling and exhaling before closing his eyes and leaning back in the chair.
“It’s not your fault.” She continued. “He made his choices.”
Chad patted Daryl on the shoulder. “It’s gonna be alright, bud, I promise.”
“Yeah,” Mike snorted. “I’m sure even if Frankie keels over in an alley, he’ll come back to haunt you as a ghost.”
Chad glared at him. “Now is not the time, Mike.”
Mike looked down at the floor. “Yeah, yeah, you’re right. Sorry, kid.”
Anita pulled away from the peephole on the door and waved her arms in the air. “He’s coming! This is not a drill!” She ran to her seat as Frank entered the building.
“I’m back, assholes!” He declared. “I know you all missed…” He made eye contact with Daryl, whose expression didn’t lighten up a bit when he walked in the room. “ me.”
He took his seat and pulled the microphone where he wanted it. “Who wants to be interviewed first? I got a hell’a lot of catching up to do with the lot of ya. Chuck, what ever happened with that presidential run o’yours?”
“My AI daughter had the most successful third party run in history. She won an entire state.”
“Which one?”
“Missouri.”
“Ouch. My condolences.”
“Ahem,” Dr. Jung cleared her throat. “Before everyone gets too distracted, I suggest we all take out our prepared statements. Who would like to start?”
Anita raised her hand. Jung nodded, so she began reading from her handwritten sheet of paper. “Frank, when I married you, I saw a light in your eyes that sparkled with enthusiasm for life. And when we divorced, I knew that light was still there and that it would keep you going as we entered our independent new lives. Today, I don’t see that light in your eyes at all. It’s gone out. And despite our differences, that breaks my heart.”
“So, uh…” Frank leaned forward. “Does that mean y’want me back?”
“No.”
Frank leaned back again. “Good. I didn’t want to either. Bitch.”
She continued reading. “I worry knowing you’re falling apart out there on the streets, trying drug after drug just trying to find a high that feels as good as life used to feel on its own. But it’s never going to work, Frank. There is no drug that can replace loving yourself.”
He chuckled. “Don’t be so sure. Check this out.” He pulled out a baggie from his pocket. “I got heroin!”
Mike lunged at him and wrestled the bag away.
“Hey, hey, hey! Not so grabby! I brought plenty for everyone!”
Mike took the bag, glared at him, and handed it to Dr. Jung. Frank got up from the floor and brushed himself off.
“Y’all got no manners, I swear.”
“I just…” Anita held back tears. “I just want to see you get better, Frank.”
“Wait a damn minute…” Frank looked at every face in the room. Each one was deadly serious. It could only mean one thing. “This is a goddamn intervention, isn’t it?”
Nobody responded. Perhaps they were all too shocked that he hadn’t already figured it out.
“I don’t have a problem, y’all! Ha!” He chuckled. “I’m not addicted to nothin’. I used all sorts o’stuff and I’m fine. Don’t even need it. Could quit right now if I want.” He pulled out a cigarette and stuck it in his mouth. “Anybody got a light?”
Please comment, reblog, like, and follow if you enjoyed - I'd love to know what you think! See you tomorrow for part two.

cartermatt NCIS interview: EPs on McGee’s marriage; will Ziva return in season 18?
CarterMatt – I know that there were some episodes that you were ready to film last spring, but weren’t able to when filming shut down. Was this premiere, ‘Sturgeon Season,’ set to be one of those final episodes that didn’t get to film?
Steven D. Binder – Not at all. When we left in the spring, we realized that we would have to write a new premiere and ease back into whatever the world was. As we started thinking about the great unknowns and the idea of characters living in a coronavirus world, we toyed with the idea of an alternate reality where the virus doesn’t exist. We abandoned that.
What we ended up settling on, and you’ll know immediately when you watch the premiere, is that it will open in a coronavirus world — though coronavirus isn’t important to what is being talked about. Then, we jump back in time to the episode ‘Musical Chairs,’ where Gibbs lied in the squad room about going sturgeon fishing and was gone the whole episode. We splice off in this episode and we see what Gibbs was doing related to Emily Fornell.
We spend a good portion of the beginning of the season in a pre-pandemic timeframe, which enabled us to get a better handle on what the future was going to look like. That way, when we land in the present-day time, we have a sense of what it is going to be.
Frank Cardea – The first five episodes take place in the period of [‘Musical Chairs’]. Episode 6 wraps that up, and episode 7 will bring us up to a post-COVID world.
I am really glad to be seeing Fornell again in the premiere, given that the season 16 finale ‘Daughters’ was so important for him and for Gibbs. How does this ‘Sturgeon Season’ story affect Gibbs? It’s weird to think about, given that whatever happened in that past, he’s been keeping a secret from everyone in the present.
Binder – And that’s going to have to come to an end at some point…
Cardea – It affects him greatly. It develops over the first five episodes and even beyond that — through six, seven, eight, and nine. It will still be affecting his life. We’re going to see a slightly different Gibbs as a result of what he went through.
The news is out there that Maria Bello is leaving at some point this season, but how long can we expect to see her stick around? Will all of her episodes be at once, or sort of spread out throughout the year?
Binder – She’s a part of the team, and we’re going to delve in to some specific things for her.
Cardea – She’s doing eight episodes, and it will be wrapped up in the beginning part of the year.
You guys have managed to get back Fornell, and guest stars I know in some ways are more challenging in this pandemic climate. Have you faced any limitations because of that?
Cardea – We have a very rigorous COVID protocol, but we haven’t let it impact our storytelling. Joe Spano, who plays Fornell, has always been an integral part of the show. He went through the same testing protocol as all of our stars and guest stars. We haven’t shied away from bringing in new people because of COVID; we’ve just put them through our rigorous testing program.
Binder – Maybe there’s a few less in the background. Do we really need 20 people in the background? Can we do it with 9?
Cardea – Crowd scenes are pretty hard to shoot nowadays, because everyone who comes into contact with our cast and crew has to be tested.
I know there will be a lot of people wondering, but is there any specific plan to bring Ziva back after the arc last season?
Binder – That was always a story-driven appearance; it was never a “we got Ziva, let’s throw story at her.” I’d just say that now, we’ve got a lot of other fish to fry before we go back and even think about another story at this time. We’ve got a fairly complex narrative structure, we’ve got Sloane and making sure that she gets a send-off that is fitting and surprising and exciting, and we’ve got the coronavirus. To throw Ziva on top of all of it would be like throwing a hat on top of a hat.
Cardea – We also have a compressed season this year. CBS is cutting back on their episode orders because we got such a late start. We’re doing a third fewer episodes than we normally would in a non-COVID year.
That dovetails perfectly into what I wanted to ask next. With fewer episodes, will there be a change at all in format? Is it possible that the story may feel a little more continuous, even if it’s not necessarily serialized?
Binder – We had some plans in play that are going to be compressed because of the fewer episodes. I don’t know when it’s all said and done if there will be a different ratio between serialized and non-serialized episodes.
Cardea – It will stay pretty similar to what we’ve done in the past. It just means that there are some things we wanted to do that will have to wait until future years.
Binder – Even these first five episodes where there is this long-term thing happening, we’ve tried to also design it where it’s also its own non-serialized episode, where you can just tune in and watch that episode. You don’t really have to see anything before or after it. If we feel a “Previously On…” will help, we may throw that in. The one exception is the wrap-up episode. It will be helpful if you’ve seen all the things leading up to that episode, but it’s one episode out of the first seven. You could have just tuned in and watched the other shows without knowing anything else. It’s still the same lovable characters, solving crimes.
I want to make sure we talk about the 400th episode, which is going to be about tracing through Gibbs and Ducky’s past. What was the feeling like exploring this relationship, especially since I have to imagine this idea had been rolling in your head for years?
Binder – I don’t know that the specific idea of the 400th was rolling around, but when I sat down to do the 400th, I asked ‘what was deserving enough? What was epic enough?’. It was how these people became these people. We’ve seen so much before that — we’ve seen Young Gibbs before he joined the Marines, and Young Ducky when he was a doctor before he went to Afghanistan. This was sort of the missing link between then and now, and I thought it’d be interesting — that final link. 400 seemed like a good time to do it.
I’ve seen on Sean Murray’s Instagram an image of he and Margo Harshman on set. I’m assuming with that we’ll be seeing Delilah back early on. Is there anything you can say about that?
Cardea – One of the first five episodes Margo will be featured really prominently in. It was good to have the Delilah character back with McGee. There are different layers to explore.
Binder – We haven’t really dug into it too much. Everyone’s relationships are generally pretty happy, but at some point every marriage has a rough patch. We dip our toe into that water a little bit.
Finally, I believe Wilmer Valderrama has said we could hear a little bit about Torres’ past and maybe his family. What can we expect to see there?
Binder – We do bring up some family — we do mention a sister, who I don’t think we’ve mentioned since he started on the show. I think he’s going to have a personal experience with someone who’s served some time — he’s always putting people away, and he never really thinks about the other side of the coin. I think there’s a good chance we’ll see something along those lines [of family]; nothing has been written yet.
Cardea – With most of the regulars, we get a good idea as to where they live and how they live. We’re going to get a sense of his home life a little bit.

R.E. Seraphin molds tiny shapes into big songs.
Though he’s been on the scene for a while now (with different bands) I hadn’t heard the music of Bay Area musician R.E. “Ray” Seraphin until this year via a cassette called Tiny Shapes via Paisley Shirt Records (more on the label below). His first real band was Talkies, which he discusses below (and I have enjoyed), but he seems to have really come into his own this year with that cassette and a new EP, A Room Forever, which came out just a month or so ago. In his music you’ll hear influences of 80’s jangle pop as well as some deeper post-punk stuff (and for more current stuff I hear whispers of Dean Wareham and his bands and Wild Nothing). Reading below he seems very well grounded and seems to have a great attitude about everything (even not being able to play shows during a pandemic or being in a writing slump). I think once this is all over this guy will go on 5-year tour and gain lots and lots of new fans. In the meantime do check out his stuff, you won’t be disappointed.

Where did you grow up?
Berkeley, CA. The area I grew up in was filled with Victorian homes and dilapidated industrial warehouses. My family home was walking distance from a lagoon and an old, rusty set of train tracks. I felt I lived in an unremarkable college town. There wasn't much activity outside of the school. I discovered Berkeley’s storied political and musical history much later in life. Now, of course, there are many books written about Berkeley, but I thought it was a kinda nondescript city as a kid.
Do you remember what band made you fall in love with music?
Dating myself hard here, but I remember being floored by The White Stripes’ “Fell in Love With a Girl” video when I was 11. The Top 40 music making the rounds on VH1 and MTV at the time was beyond dreck — a lot of Train, Staind, Matchbox 20. The White Stripes were the first band I was exposed to that made succinct, catchy, no-frills music. I was genuinely enthralled. Plus, the Lego animation in that video still holds up.
Was guitar your first instrument?
I started on bass. My first instrument was an extremely cheap, pointy BC Rich knockoff monstrosity. I believe I was 13. I had no idea how to play and little interest in learning. For the first year, I putzed around with a Pro Co RAT, a wah pedal, and a tinny-sounding Crate practice amp. I just tried (and succeeded in) being as obnoxious as possible. When I started writing songs, I eventually graduated from playing bass poorly to playing guitar poorly.

Tell us about your first band.
My first band that played shows was called The Phil Spector Shotgun Experience. That was primarily a cover band I put together with my high school buddies and my mom. We covered Radio Birdman, the Pink Fairies, and the MC5; we also had an unwittingly hilarious original called “Nitroglycerin Man” — the first song I ever wrote (maybe I was subconsciously inspired by Wages of Fear). At some point, we kicked my mom out of the band and started playing as the Impediments. That band kicked ass — we made pridefully dumb American punk music. That was also my only band to sign a record contract, so it’s quite possibly been downhill from there!
Tell us about The Talkies (unless that was your first band mentioned above).
Talkies (no article!) was a group I started in 2014 as a vehicle for my songs. My previous bands had been more of a shared vision, so Talkies was my first foray into being the lone genius of a group. The sound was mostly drawn from what is disparagingly known as power pop. Basically, I was heavily into the band Shoes for a few years.
We released a few albums and EPs. Did a couple short tours. During that time, the project was dragged from the Bay Area to Austin and back before I finally, mercifully pulled the plug last year. It was time.
When did you transition from Talkies to the solo stuff you’re doing now? Did it feel comfortable?
Talkies had run its course, but I had a smattering of songs leftover from that project that I wanted to record. Around that time, I learned my good friend Jasper Leach (Burner Herzog) was getting ready to skip town. I had always wanted to work with him and, seizing my final opportunity to do so, we banged out my début, Tiny Shapes, last summer. The whole experience was fairly serendipitous. The stars aligned for that one.
I wouldn't say the process was comfortable. Recording the album felt necessary, urgent — almost compulsory at times. My heart was ready for a new project and I truly wanted to center myself for the first time. I’m glad I did. This is the happiest I’ve been musically in some time.

“I think therefore I am”
I love the songs on A Room Forever. How did they come together?
So glad to hear that! I got asked to contribute to a compilation back in April. With the deadline approaching and inspiration still eluding me, I took a glance at my bookshelf, noticed a particular Carson McCullers title, and whipped up “Clock Without Hands.” After my trusty collaborator Owen Adair Kelley added his parts, I felt we had stumbled upon a great sound. I tried to harness the creative spirit and pushed myself to finish a few ideas buried deep in the recesses of my Voice Memo app. I got friends Matt Bullimore (The Mantles) and Yea-Ming Chen (Yea-Ming & The Rumors) involved, and that was that. No great origin story — just pure American ingenuity and elbow grease.
Tell us about Paisley Shirt Records. Who runs it and how did you hook up with them?
Paisley Shirt Records is simply the man, the myth, the legend — Kevin Linn. He is a San Francisco-based musician and artist who records as Sad-Eyed Beatniks.
I met him when I was looking for someone to release my album, Tiny Shapes. He had just put out a tape by Hits — a great local band featuring some friends of mine — and I felt a kinship with his roster. So, I reached out to him. Foolishly, he agreed to put out my album and we’ve been inseparable ever since. Solid dude. High marks.
Have you done any solo tours? If so where and how did they go?
Ha! No. I had only notched two shows as R.E. Seraphin before the pandemic hit. Likely not doing anything beyond the odd live-stream show for a while. That said, if any tastemaking European touring agencies are reading this — give me a ring!

The latest EP
What are your top 10 desert island discs?
Ah, jeez. This question. I’ll just say these are 10 (plus one) that I come back to quite often. In no order:
Marquee Moon by Television
The Everly Brothers’ Best
Forever Changes by Love
Let it Be by The Replacements
Third/Sister Lovers by Big Star
The First Songs by Laura Nyro
16 Lovers Lane by The Go-Betweens
In a Silent Way by Miles Davis
A Different Kind of Tension by Buzzcocks
Something Else by The Kinks
Old No. 1 by Guy Clark
What are a few Bay Area bands that we should know about.
This is a golden-era for weirdo pop music in the Bay. To name just a few: Galore, Cindy, The Umbrellas, Tony Jay, Flowertown, Healing Potpourri, Latitude, Cocktails, The Reds, Pinks, & Purples, Yea-Ming & The Rumors, Anna Hillburg, the 1981, Toner, Frank Ene, Neutrals, Owen Adair Kelley, April Magazine, Telephone Numbers, Hits, Sad-Eyed Beatniks. Essentially every act associated with Paisley Shirt Records and/or Mt.St.Mtn. My bias is strong.
Do you feel that the pandemic has helped your songwriting or hindered it (if either)?
A li’l column A, a li’l column B. I’m a natural procrastinator, so I’ve definitely savored the lack of band practice and shows (things that often necessitate new material). That said, I doubt I would have finished A Room Forever had I not been quarantined at home. Without having many obligations and without being able to leave my house, music definitely became my raison d’être for the first time as an adult. I was fortunate to not be deemed an “essential” worker and to be able to focus energy on my passion momentarily. Silver lining.
What’s next ? A new record by the end of the year possibly?
Hopefully continuing to promote my music and play shows on the ol’ webiverse. A Room Forever will be receiving a small vinyl and tape pressing at the end of September via Mt.St.Mtn. and Paisley Shirt Records. So, looking forward to that.
I was creatively tapped for a few months after A Room Forever. While a new album is possible, it’s not probable. I am plugging away at a few tunes, but I tend to conceptualize albums as a thematic whole and not as a collection of songs. Haven't stumbled onto my next Big Idea yet. Don't count me out, though. I could see myself dashing off a covers album for sure.
What is one song you wish you’d written?
Too many to name! I’ll reframe that question to mean a great song I could see myself capable of writing in an alternate time, place, or dimension. Maybe one of Peter Holsapple’s songs from The dB’s — “Black & White” or “Neverland.” Also: anything by Wreckless Eric or Martin Newell.
Final thoughts? Closing comments?
Just finished reading an interview with the great James Purdy, and thought this quote summed up iur current political climate well:
“You go out into the world and no one knows you, you can be ruled because you’re programmed. Everything is stamped, put on the shelf, described, thrown out into the garbage. It’s a political process, and behind that an economic process. But to be nothing, that is the worst of all possible things.”

I have a list of ~900 albums from 2019 that I still want to eventually listen to / review [IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT ALERT]
For this project (already 125+ releases deep), which is just impossibly daunting and makes me head hurt. IDK how to streamline this process or is any “critic” out there really listening to “all” the good music? It’s impossible I guess... BUT needless to say, these have made this list from an even larger pool of music that I either listened to briefly and immediately dismissed or (gasp!) never even came across my radar (radar = many many music blogs I follow via RSS).
Anyway, because I’ll most likely never get to this (whatever this is, an Xgau parody or something)... Here is the list (please ignore some of my notations/typos):

ep. 61: Broadway Melody! (Jerome Robbins, Chita Rivera, Mary Martin, Al Hirschfeld)
There’s no business like show business, and there are no references like theatre references! Thanks to Paris (and later, Lorelai), our programs say we’re in for a full two acts of Broadway pop culture refs. Why does Paris want to beat Jerome Robbins? How is Brad like Chita Rivera? Why does Paris want him to sit down like Mary Martin? And how does Lorelai’s doodling resemble Al Hirschfeld’s? And bonus: Can Kyla finally name all 4 of the Beatles? You can bet we’re singing and dancing our way through our research to find out. Plus, In addition to all this talk about choreography, music, performance, and art, we catch up on the latest award news for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.
Other pop culture we ref: Xanadu, Ishtar, Ingrid Bergman, Meryl Streep, I Dream of Jeannie, Funny Girl, West Side Story, The Sound of Music, Guys and Dolls, Chicago, Bye Bye Birdie, Dick Van Dyke, Ethel Merman, White Christmas, Gene Kelly, Frank Sinatra, Vera Ellen, Fiddler on the Roof, Ariana Grande, Gwen Stefani, Gypsy, Peter Pan, Into the Woods

2018-musique.
Positions quasi-interchangeables.
1) SOB x RBE - Gangin’ II 2) Kodak Black - Dying to live 3) Sheck Wes - MUDBOY 4) 03 Greedo - God Level 5) Lil Durk - STTS3 6) Yungeen Ace - Life of Betrayal 7) NBA YoungBoy - Until Death Call My Name 8) Le best-of de Sada Baby 9) SCH - JVLIUS 10) Playboi Carti - Die Lit 11) BlocBoy JB - SIMI 12) Roc Marciano - Behold a dark horse 13) Payroll Giovanni - Big Bossin Vol. 2 14) Koran Streets - Late 20s

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed. However, Bob Frank Entertainment will now be equal partners with Blue Hat Records and the Daniels estate, with each owning one-third of the music assets. Blue Hat Records is a label launched by Daniels and his manager David Corlew, while the estate is overseen by Daniels' wife, Hazel, and his son, Charlie Jr. "This transaction will be the first of many for BFE's new privately funded investment arm, Red Shark Ventures, which is focused on catalog masters," said BFE CEO Bob Frank. "What better way to launch this effort then with our long-time partner Blue Hat Records who we have been in business with for over 20 years. With such a deep and historic archive, we already have a strong release schedule through 2023."
Bon Jovi have announced that they are offering a chance for local bands to open for the legendary rock band's upcoming tour. The potential groups must submit an audition video of original music for consideration. One winner will be selected for each tour date in April. Bon Jovi is extending a helping hand to local bands who have lost opportunities to perform due to the pandemic. "We have all missed touring, and we know that nothing can replace the energy of a live show for the fans or the band," frontman Jon Bon Jovi said in a statement.
The rock band's month-long spring tour will kick off in Omaha, Nebraska, on April 1.

2019-04-19 - 09:00-12:00 - The Midway
The Midway returns for its annual one and only Friday show of the year, April 19, 2019. The theme: funeral songs. For some, a sombre or pithy reflection. For others, a sentimental soundtrack - or even a jolly celebration. Some of these songs have become legends unto themselves, while others have birthed new traditions. Enjoy a wickedly woke wake as we explore some famous funeral tunes, and invite listeners to get in touch with their own bury melodies.

Spare Parts Liveblog 6 - Disc 2
Dinner break! Okay, the Doctor and Nyssa leave after the ep 1 cliffhanger, and they never get into any trouble at all. JUST KIDDING.....
Track 2.1 “Necessary Force”
Part Two opens with something that’s a stock scene in new Who, but rare in classic Who, especially with Nyssa of all people: the companion and Doctor in a shouting match. I remember when Tegan was dissed by many fans because bossy/outspoken women were not popular. Then again, she did it all the time; Nyssa saves it for special occasions.
“And if you won’t get involved, then I must stay behind and do it by myself” —Nyssa
Every time I hear this bit, I cheer and wince all at once.
Never forget that Nyssa. Has. GUTS. The moment she realizes it’s the homeworld of the Cybermen, after she’s seen just how miserable and horrible and hopeless life is there, and knows she’ll probably die of starvation or consumption or be carved up for spare parts— that is where she, child of privilege who grew up in an idyllic paradise, decides to end her days. To help. Which is the sort of thing she does: she did it on Terminus. Big Finish keeps hammering home this basic aspect of her character.
While fighting, she and the Doctor run smack dab into the recurring dilemma of Doctor Who: you want to help, and you have a time machine, but you can’t alter history. Nyssa: I want to give these people some hope! I want to stop the Cybermen from coming into existence! Doctor: Yes, very laudable, but you can’t do it on your own! You’re not an army! You can’t turn the whole of history around on a sixpence! Nyssa: I’ve seen you do it!
(Again, Nyssa has guts, and also, long before Clara was doing it, Nyssa had a very dangerous habit of trying to be Just Like the Doctor).
The whole scene is so well-acted by Peter and Sarah. Chills down spine.
Also we get a chance to hear them face their pain about Adric’s death at the hands of the Cybermen, something Earthshock and Time-Flight really didn’t address.
[Doctor talks about running after disasters with a stretcher.]
“A pity that didn’t occur to you before when it came to sacrificing Adric!” Ouch, Nyssa. Ouch. [she’s still mad they didn’t run after Adric with a stretcher.]
Which gives her an additional motive for wanting to stop the Cybermen from coming into existence: it will save Adric’s life. Oh, Nyssa.
Doctor, after she finally lashes out: “So much that never gets said. Bound to boil over sooner or later.” Yeah, with scriptwriters who actually think about the story’s impact on the characters.
However, they are very dear friends and rational people, and by the time Nyssa’s collected her belongings to leave, they’ve both cooled down; Nyssa apologises for that barb.
And the Doctor honors her wishes and lets her go.
Or would have done, if she hadn’t mentioned bringing a cybermat into the TARDIS. At which point he goes all angry-squeaky-Five:
YOU BROUGHT A CYBERMAT INTO MY TARDIS!!!!!!
oops.
Track 2.2 “The Thousand Natural Shocks”
Oh FINALLY. I had a huge crush on this badass lady when she played a space pirate and crack pilot on Blake’s 7:
(hooray for farrah fawcett hair)
So I’m stoked that Sally Knyvette playing Doctorman Allan, the morally-grey-area scientist developing the Cybermen.
She’s cynical. She defies the Committee and laughs when she hears about the Doctor’s troublemaking— she’s about the only person with enough privilege/power to risk thinking for herself. She’s alcoholic (because Mondas is too horrible to deal with sober— and so is her conscience). She really is trying to save her people, but she’s got a brutal way of doing it: turning the weak and sick into a cyber-workforce to serve the strong. Eugenics ahoy. And she’s too damn proud of her creations, a standard Ethically Challenged Scientist trope.
She teases Sisterman Constant at every opportunity, making fun of her hypocrisy, (e.g. calling the Hartleys her “patients” when they’re just terrorized citizens). Sisterman Constant is a religious type, but actually she’s just another version of the secret police.
So anyway, we get Allan’s first scene treating “crewmen” from the surface and arguing with the Sisterman.
When I first listened, I had trouble with of “-man” used as a suffix to denote profession. A Sisterman is a nun (Constant prays to the “sky above” at one point, their heaven), a Doctorman is a doctor, an Electriman is an electrician, and so on. Sounds odd, but then so does the universal “he.”
I also appreciate how many female characters are major players in this story, typical of Big Finish especially when Gary Russell was director. They don’t fall into stereotypical villain/victim female roles. (While Yvonne is a victim, she has a rather atypical part to play too.)
Got to meet Sally Knyvette a few years ago at a signing in Barking, but alas I took the worst picture AND stuck my foot right down my throat. Ah well. Good thing is that actors meet so many fans they’ll forget your foolishness.
(still with the great hair, damn her)
Track 2.3 “Onto the Carpet”
Back in the TARDIS, testy!Doctor is frantic about the cyber-pest loose in his TARDIS. Just as bitterness about Adric’s death made Nyssa lash out at the Doctor, Nyssa endangering his TARDIS makes him lash out at her.
And go all squeaky. Of course.
He blows up at her, but once the Cybermat shorts out and she’s apologized again, he apologizes as well. Typical deflection: he rather awkwardly asks her to see what she can do to fix the damage: “Please, take a look. You’re good at this sort of thing. I’m going out for some fresh air.”
Exactly as he used to do when Tegan got under his skin and he needed to calm down. Have I mentioned how good Platt is at capturing the nuances my favorite TARDIS team?
Except this is the moment when the Doctor makes a FATAL mistake: HE GETS INVOLVED and leaves Nyssa, who is not going to stay safely put for very long. (And I note that it is partly Nyssa’s fault he gets involved, and/or her compassion makes things more difficult. See also: Creatures of Beauty, Emerald Tiger, trying to rescue the Doctor in Masquerade and screwing up the interface, etc.)
Scene jump to Doctorman Allan arguing with the ominously robotic voice of the Committee. She wants to slow down their Cybermen program and try to improve the process to save lives. The Committee, ignoring her pleas, decide the city is consuming too many resources and must be shut down. Why look after the interests of the people you represent when you could just eliminate them?
A parable of Tories shutting down UK social services over the past 20 odd years? Not sure, but the GOP is voting on Trumpcare in the US this week.
Allan: “What could possibly be more important than saving people?!” Committee: “We. must. survive.”
Every time i hear a new Who Cyberman say “delete” or “upgrade,” I shake my head. They just don’t have the Scary Motto down like their predecessors.
Outside the TARDIS, the Doctor finds a Cyberman, Allan’s drone. I think it was Platt’s idea to make them used for surveillance.
Frank shows up at the TARDIS to inform Nyssa that Dad Hartley is all sad; his daughter’s been called up for the work crews. Again, tying into Nyssa’s backstory; she knows what it’s like to lose a family member (and she guesses Yvonne’s being cyber-converted). Whereas Frank’s oblivious and angry he didn’t get what he thinks is a glamorous, well-paying job.
He’s been pretty angry and self-centered through the story so far. Then again he lost his mom pretty recently, so he’s suppressing grief.
Track 2.4 - “Bones to Pick”
Act II means taking action, although not necessarily effective. The Doctor is upset that the riot he started last night seems to have died off.
He wants to stir up the resistance some more. (Not realizing the cost they’ll pay, or else knowing the cost will be 100% fatal if they don’t do something soon.) This time he’s trying to draw attention to the graverobbing by hijacking a lorry and scattering its shipment of bones all over the street. I love his pre-smart-device kettle and ball of string approach to grave danger, although it doesn’t always work.
Meanwhile the Committee’s decided to cyber-convert the remaining population. Or at least that’s what Allan guesses. She’s drinking to keep from thinking. Sisterman Constant, selfish git, says the Selectors (the nuns) should be exempt; they’re the ones who choose “recruits” to be processed, making them elite. Whereas Allan can read the writing on the wall.
Track 2.5 - “Processing Credit”
Poor Yvonne. Constant blesses her while sending her to the slaughter. The victims being taken for Cyber-processing have their clothes stripped, exactly like prisoners in Nazi interment camps. Deny them their humanity before taking it away, whee.
Scene switches to the Committee (one thing I don’t like about BF -- too many modulated weird voices I have trouble understanding). Moment of doom (if it wasn’t before): They’re recalling Commander Jeng from the surface to take over. Military coup in progress.
But bringing Jeng down endangers the project on the surface, which has hit a critical juncture: radiation’s really high; laborers die off quickly, They’re caught on the horns of an impossible dilemma, and unfortunately a soulless Committee with no compassion is in charge of choosing. Sound familiar?
At LAST. Back to Dodd, disreputable rogue, being mean to Mr. Hartley who’s signing away his own organs just so he can feed his son.. Mondas is so horrible.
Mr. hartley passes the Doctor on the way out. Tells him Nyssa will make a good doctor, considering how she helped him.
“Oh, really?” the Doctor says, a bit dubious. But she will, in both senses: as a doctor on Terminus and, once she’s older, she starts behaving more and more like him. (Jupiter Conjunction, Mistfall, Entropy Plague to name a few examples.)
But that’s to come. Now the Doctor is pestering Dodd again.
Track 2.6 - “Taking Stock” (the track names on this audio are great)
The Doctor wants Dodd to help him break into the Committee’s central HQ. Dodd has other ideas, involving locking him in a freezer with the other spare parts.
Meanwhile Nyssa handily beats off a swarm of Cybermats with her nerdy smarts, electrocuting them.
Frank: It worked! Amazing! Nyssa: Not really. But worryingly satisfying.
She’s a gentle soul. Usually.
Sure enough, the Doctor’s been gone too long, so Nyssa grabs some food to go help Mr. Hartley.
Doom. Doom. Doom. JUST STAY IN THE TARDIS.
___________
Poor Yvonne. We get to hear her final moments as a human, begging for her Dad. Heartbreaking. Ugh: sound of a dentist’s drill just to trip all the horror nerves.
“You will join us. We are the future.”
Again, the Cybermen in this story are so much scarier than shiny robots saying “delete” and “upgrade.”
Because they are like the Borg— long before the Borg— people being assimilated into walking corpses. No wonder Death in Heaven tried to bring back this aspect of them, remind us what’s inside the armor.
____________
Doctor escapes Dodd and a random Cyber-policeman, and promptly tries to steal the guy’s horse. Using his Tristan credentials, the Doctor tries talk to the beastie.
Shades of Black Beauty in this bit, I think, although I haven’t read it in so long I’m not sure. “the whips are hard, the feed stale....”
Alas he doesn’t succeed in escaping; Allan rescues him from being executed, but requisitions him.
Track 2.7 “A Cracking Holiday”
Poor Mr. Hartley is in shock after losing Yvonne a second time, watching her last shreds erased before his eyes.
I love the way Big Finish often uses the sound of a teakettle going off as a sort of shorthand alarm: it’s warning of imminent danger, but the heroes are being too British and Keeping Calm and Carrying on
And now everything goes to hell. The power cuts out, the Cyber recruits escape in the confusion, the roof cracks, the lights go out, the cyber-police are trying to herd everyone into the Committee Palace for processing, and rioting breaks out— it’s apocalyptic.
Amazing how an audio with just a few voices and sound effects can suggest the death throes of an entire world... this hollow, terrifying world, the claustrophobic city in a cavern. It’s epic.
Because our imaginations are still a damnsight scarier than CGI.
DOO WEE OO.
