Tumblr media
SO HERE IS THE WHOLE STORY (SO FAR).
I am on my knees begging you to reblog this post and to stop reblogging the original ones I sent out yesterday. This is the complete account with all the most recent info; the other one is just sending people down senselessly panicked avenues that no longer lead anywhere.
IN SHORT
Cliff Weitzman, CEO of Speechify and (aspiring?) voice actor, used AI to scrape thousands of popular, finished works off AO3 to list them on his own for-profit website and in his attached app. He did this without getting any kind of permission from the authors of said work or informing AO3. Obviously.
When fandom at large was made aware of his theft and started pushing back, Weitzman issued a non-apology on the original social media posts—usingĀ
his dyslexia;Ā
his intent to implement a tip-system for the plagiarized authors; andĀ
a sudden willingness to take down the work of every author who saw my original social media posts and emailed him individually with a ā€˜valid’ claim,
as reasons we should allow him to continue monetizing fanwork for his own financial gain.
When we less-than-kindly refused, he took down his ā€˜apologies’ as well as his website (allegedly—it’s possible that our complaints to his web host, the deluge of emails he received or the unanticipated traffic brought it down, since there wasn’t any sort of official statement made about it), and when it came back up several hours later, all of the work formerly listed in the fan fiction category was no longer there.Ā
THE TAKEAWAYS
1. Cliff Weitzman (aka Ofek Weitzman) is a scumbag with no qualms about taking fanwork without permission, feeding it to AI and monetizing it for his own financial gain;Ā
2. Fandom can really get things done when it wants to, andĀ
3. Our fanworks appear to be hidden, but they’re NOT DELETED from Weitzman’s servers, and independently published, original works are still listed without the authors' permission. We need to hold this man responsible for his theft, keep an eye on both his current and future endeavors, and take action immediately when he crosses the line again.Ā
THE TIMELINE, THE DETAILS, THE SCREENSHOTS (behind the cut)
Sunday night, December 22nd 2024, I noticed an influx in visitors to my fic You & Me & Holiday Wine. When I searched the title online, hoping to find out where they came from, a new listing popped up (third one down, no less):
Tumblr media
This listing is still up today, by the way, though now when you follow the link to word-stream, it justĀ brings you to the main site. (Also, to be clear, this was not the cause for the influx of traffic to my fic; word-stream did not link back to the original work anywhere.)
I followed the link to word-stream, where to my horror Y&M&HW was listed in its entirety—though, beyond the first half of the first chapter, behind a paywall—along with a link promising to take me—through an app downloadable on the Apple Store—to an AI-narrated audiobook version. When I searched word-stream itself for my ao3 handle I found both of my multi-chapter fics were listed this way:
Tumblr media
Because the tags on my fics (which included genres* and characters, but never the original IPs**) weren’t working, I put ā€˜Kara Danvers’ into the search bar and discovered that many more supercorp fics (Supergirl TV fandom, Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor pairing) were listed.
Tumblr media
I went looking online for any mention of word-stream and AI plagiarism (the covers—as well as the ridiculously inflated number of reviews and ratings—made it immediately obvious that AI fuckery was involved), but found almost nothing: only one single Reddit post had been made, and it received (at that time) only a handful of upvotes and no advice.Ā
I decided to make a tumblr post to bring the supercorp fandom up to speed about the theft. I draw as well as write for fandom and I’ve only ever had to deal with art theft—which has a clear set of steps to take depending on where said art was reposted—and I was at a loss regarding where to start in this situation.
After my post went up I remembered Project Copy Knight, which is worth commending for the work they’ve done to get fic stolen from AO3 taken down from monetized AI 'audiobook’ YouTube accounts. I reached out to @echoekhi, asking if they’d heard of this site and whether they could advise me on how to get our works taken down.
Tumblr media
While waiting for a reply I looked into Copy Knight’s methods and decided to contact OTW’s legal department:
Tumblr media
And then I went to bed.
By morning, tumblr friends @makicarn and @fazedlight as well as a very helpful tumblr anon had seen my post and done some very productive sleuthing:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
@echoekhi had also gotten back to me, advising me, as expected, to contact the OTW. So I decided to sit tight until I got a response from them.
That response came only an hour or so later:Ā
Tumblr media
Which was 100% understandable, but still disappointing—I doubted a handful of individual takedown requests would accomplish much, and I wasn’t eager to share my given name and personal information with Cliff Weitzman himself, which is unavoidable if you want to file a DMCA.
I decided to take it to Reddit, hoping it would gain traction in the wider fanfic community, considering so many fandoms were affected. My Reddit posts (with the updates at the bottom as they were emerging) can be found here and here.
A helpful Reddit user posted a guide on how users could go about filing a DMCA against word-stream here (to wobbly-at-best results)
A different helpful Reddit user signed up to access insight into word-streams pricing. Comment is here.
Tumblr media
Smells unbelievably scammy, right? In addition to those audacious prices—though in all fairness any amount of money would be audacious considering every work listed is accessible elsewhere for free—my dyscalculia is screaming silently at the sight of that completely unnecessary amount of intentionally obscured numbers.
Speaking of which! As soon as the post on r/AO3—and, as a result, my original tumblr post—began taking off properly, sometime around 1 pm, jumpscare! A notification that a tumblr account named @cliffweitzman had commented on my post, and I got a bit mad about the gist of his messageĀ :
Tumblr media
Fortunately he caught plenty of flack in the comments from other users (truly you should check out the comment section, it is extremely gratifying and people are making tremendously good points), in response to which, of course, he first tried to both reiterate and renegotiate his point in a second, longer comment (which I didn’t screenshot in time so I’m sorry for the crappy notification email formatting):
Tumblr media
which he then proceeded to also post to Reddit (this is another Reddit user’s screenshot, I didn’t see it at all, the notifications were moving too fast for me to follow by then)
Tumblr media
... where he got a roughly equal amount of righteously furious replies. (Check downthread, they're still there, all the way at the bottom.)
After which Cliff went ahead & deleted his messages altogether.Ā
It’s not entirely clear whether his account was suspended by Reddit soon after or whether he deleted it himself, but considering his tumblr account is still intact, I assume it’s the former. He made a handful of sock puppet accounts to play around with for a while, both on Reddit and Tumblr, only one of which I have a screenshot of, but since they all say roughly the same thing, you’re not missing much:
Tumblr media
And then word-stream started throwing a DNS error.
That lasted for a good number of hours, which was unfortunately right around the time that a lot of authors first heard about the situation and started asking me individually how to find out whether their work was stolen too. I do not have that information and I am unclear on the perimeters Weitzman set for his AI scraper, so this is all conjecture: it LOOKS like the fics that were lifted had three things in common:
They were completed works;
They had over several thousand kudos on AO3; and
They were written by authors who had actively posted or updated work over the past year.
If anyone knows more about these perimeters or has info that counters my observation, please let me know!
I finally thought to check/alert evil Twitter during this time, and found out that the news was doing the rounds there already. I made a quick thread summarizing everything that had happened just in case. You can find it here.
I went to Bluesky too, where fandom was doing all the heavy lifting for me already, so I just reskeeted, as you do, and carried on.
Sometime in the very early evening, word-stream went back up—but the fan fiction category was nowhere to be seen. Tentative joy and celebration!***
That’s when several users—the ones who had signed up for accounts to gain intel and had accessed their own fics that way—reported that their work could still be accessed through their history. Relevant Reddit post here.
Sooo—
We’re obviously not done. The fanwork that was stolen by Weitzman may be inaccessible through his website right now, but they aren’t actually gone. And the fact that Weitzman wasn’t willing to get rid of them altogether means he still has plans for them.Ā
This was my final edit on my Reddit post before turning off notifications, and it's pretty much where my head will be at for at least the foreseeable future:
Tumblr media
Please feel free to add info in the comments, make your own posts, take whatever action you want to take to protect your work. I only beg you—seriously, I’m on my knees here—to not give up like I saw a handful of people express the urge to do. Keep sharing your creative work and remain vigilant and stay active to make sure we can continue to do so freely. Visit your favorite fics, and the ones you’ve kept in your ā€˜marked for later’ lists but never made time to read, and leave kudos, leave comments, support your fandom creatives, celebrate podficcers and support AO3. We created this place and it’s our responsibility to keep it alive and thriving for as long as we possibly can.
Also FUCK generative AI. It has NO place in fandom spaces.
THE 'SMALL' PRINT (some of it in all caps):
*Weitzman knew what he was doing and can NOT claim ignorance. One, it’s pretty basic kindergarten stuff that you don’t steal some other kid’s art project and present it as your own only to act surprised when they protest and then tell the victim that they should have told you sooner that they didn’t want their project stolen. And two, he was very careful never to list the IPs these fanworks were based on, so it’s clear he was at least familiar enough with the legalities to not get himself in hot water with corporate lawyers. Fucking over fans, though, he figured he could get away with that.Ā
**A note about the AI that Weitzman used to steal our work: it’s even greasier than it looks at first glance. It’s not just the method he used to lift works off AO3 and then regurgitate onto his own website and app. Looking beyond the untold horrors of his AI-generated cover ā€˜art’, in many cases these covers attempt to depict something from the fics in question that can’t be gleaned from their summaries alone. In addition, my fics (and I assume the others, as well) were listed with generated genres; tags that did not appear anywhere in or on my fic on AO3 and were sometimes scarily accurate and sometimes way off the mark. I remember You & Me & Holiday Wine had ā€˜found family’ (100% correct, but not tagged by me as such) and I believe The Shape of Soup was listed as, among others, ā€˜enemies to friends to lovers’ and ā€˜love triangle’ (both wildly inaccurate). Even worse, not all the fic listed (as authors on Reddit pointed out) came with their original summaries at all. Often the entire summary was AI-generated. All of these things make it very clear that it was an all-encompassing scrape—not only were our fics stolen, they were also fed word-for-word into the AI Weitzman used and then analyzed to suit Weitzman’s needs. This means our work was literally fed to this AI to basically do with whatever its other users want, including (one assumes) text generation.Ā
***Fan fiction appears to have been made (largely) inaccessible on word-stream at this time, but I’m hearing from several authors that their original, independently published work, which is listed at places like Kindle Unlimited, DOES still appear in word-stream’s search engine. This obviously hurts writers, especially independent ones, who depend on these works for income and, as a rule, don’t have a huge budget or a legal team with oceans of time to fight these battles for them. If you consider yourself an author in the broader sense, beyond merely existing online as a fandom author, beyond concerns that your own work is immediately at risk, DO NOT STOP MAKING NOISE ABOUT THIS.
PLEASE check my later versions of this post via my main page to make sure you have the latest version of this post before you reblog. All the information I’ve been able to gather is in my reblogs below, and it's frustrating to see the old version getting passed around, sending people on wild goose chases.
Thank you all so much!

"how do I keep my art from being scraped for AI from now on?"
if you post images online, there's no 100% guaranteed way to prevent this, and you can probably assume that there's no need to remove/edit existing content. you might contest this as a matter of data privacy and workers' rights, but you might also be looking for smaller, more immediate actions to take.
...so I made this list! I can't vouch for the effectiveness of all of these, but I wanted to compile as many options as possible so you can decide what's best for you.
Discouraging data scraping and "opting out"
robots.txt - This is a file placed in a website's home directory to "ask" web crawlers not to access certain parts of a site. If you have your own website, you can edit this yourself, or you can check which crawlers a site disallows by adding /robots.txt at the end of the URL. This article has instructions for blocking some bots that scrape data for AI.
HTML metadata - DeviantArt (i know) has proposed the "noai" and "noimageai" meta tags for opting images out of machine learning datasets, while Mojeek proposed "noml". To use all three, you'd put the following in your webpages' headers:
<meta name="robots" content="noai, noimageai, noml">
Have I Been Trained? - A tool by Spawning to search for images in the LAION-5B and LAION-400M datasets and opt your images and web domain out of future model training. Spawning claims that Stability AI and Hugging Face have agreed to respect these opt-outs. Try searching for usernames!
Kudurru - A tool by Spawning (currently a Wordpress plugin) in closed beta that purportedly blocks/redirects AI scrapers from your website. I don't know much about how this one works.
ai.txt - Similar to robots.txt. A new type of permissions file for AI training proposed by Spawning.
ArtShield Watermarker - Web-based tool to add Stable Diffusion's "invisible watermark" to images, which may cause an image to be recognized as AI-generated and excluded from data scraping and/or model training. Source available on GitHub. Doesn't seem to have updated/posted on social media since last year.
Image processing... things
these are popular now, but there seems to be some confusion regarding the goal of these tools; these aren't meant to "kill" AI art, and they won't affect existing models. they won't magically guarantee full protection, so you probably shouldn't loudly announce that you're using them to try to bait AI users into responding
Glaze - UChicago's tool to add "adversarial noise" to art to disrupt style mimicry. Devs recommend glazing pictures last. Runs on Windows and Mac (Nvidia GPU required)
WebGlaze - Free browser-based Glaze service for those who can't run Glaze locally. Request an invite by following their instructions.
Mist - Another adversarial noise tool, by Psyker Group. Runs on Windows and Linux (Nvidia GPU required) or on web with a Google Colab Notebook.
Nightshade - UChicago's tool to distort AI's recognition of features and "poison" datasets, with the goal of making it inconvenient to use images scraped without consent. The guide recommends that you do not disclose whether your art is nightshaded. Nightshade chooses a tag that's relevant to your image. You should use this word in the image's caption/alt text when you post the image online. This means the alt text will accurately describe what's in the image-- there is no reason to ever write false/mismatched alt text!!! Runs on Windows and Mac (Nvidia GPU required)
Sanative AI - Web-based "anti-AI watermark"-- maybe comparable to Glaze and Mist. I can't find much about this one except that they won a "Responsible AI Challenge" hosted by Mozilla last year.
Just Add A Regular Watermark - It doesn't take a lot of processing power to add a watermark, so why not? Try adding complexities like warping, changes in color/opacity, and blurring to make it more annoying for an AI (or human) to remove. You could even try testing your watermark against an AI watermark remover. (the privacy policy claims that they don't keep or otherwise use your images, but use your own judgment)
given that energy consumption was the focus of some AI art criticism, I'm not sure if the benefits of these GPU-intensive tools outweigh the cost, and I'd like to know more about that. in any case, I thought that people writing alt text/image descriptions more often would've been a neat side effect of Nightshade being used, so I hope to see more of that in the future, at least!

I know I'm late here with this one, but man does this make me all the more excited.
Tumblr media
Ramble warning ahead and spoilers I guess
Oh hai, Cyn! Haven't seen you in a while! Now, this post could be another one of those N posts glitch made to promote the N plush dog. And I'm not gonna lie, they got us good. (Not discarding the theory that shot might still come up in eps 7 and 8, but I highly doubt it.) But this is coming from Liam himself! So I'd like to put more faith in the little snippet he gave us.
I've seen many people theorize that this might be what the absolute solver host's mind might look like when full possession takes place. I'm sold, I love that. I can imagine it, N and Uzi fighting whatever the thing is in the Cabin Fever labs. Uzi somehow ends up either being knocked out or full possession occurs, either way, her subconsciousness is transported into this realm of red. This might be the place where all the hosts' minds connect- the hive mind/cloud based system. Here, Uzi might meet Cyn and even Nori- I know I'm stretching it, but this is just me rambling my own thoughts. And keeping on with my belief in good Cyn theory, Cyn might help Uzi out. She might tell Uzi the origin of the absolute solver- how the AI error came about.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because the technicians knew about this issue. Improper disposal of worker drones, and the rejection of the kill code causes future OS issues. And in the tiniest print possible, show the 0.7% chance of a hazardous mutation. They might not know what brought this on though. Artificial intelligence is what we make it to be. If bad information is given, then we are given bad results. It'll be interesting to see if in fact the mutation is just that, a one time off chance, or if something is lurking further, or if the absolute solver has always been around and only has been able to take control via the worker drones that JCJenson built because you know, humanity is really good at orchestrating their own demise.
But back to the other crack theory. Uzi might end up chatting with Cyn or directly with the Absolute Solver, all the while her body is posessed by the said Absolute Solver. She'd be going on another rampage, probably fighting N. At the last possible minute, snap back and somehow resolve the issue with the Absolute Solver- cliche I know, but hey, if those cliches are done well, I love them.
But the red fits really well. Seeing as the Absolute Solver always ends up making some sort of red flesh webs.
Tumblr media
So for the consciousness/hive mind to conjure up an all red place for its hosts, it'd be a cool design choice.
Or, as per usual, I could be looking in too deep with a single image that Liam graciously fed us with.

I made an @ellipsus-writes account yesterday and with one day under my belt here are my first impressions.
It's basically Google Docs, but without being associated with Google. You're able to edit documents from any device with a web browser, which is a lot more convenient than the WebDav server I'm currently using.
Things that are less than ideal:
There aren't a lot of customization options. You can switch between light and dark mode, but I would like to be able to set my document backgrounds to a color. Also it would be better if you could change your view layout. Right now it looks like this:
Tumblr media
and I would prefer to have these documents in a list, rather than these big bubbles. The bubbles might be cool if you could change their color or add an image background to them, but as is they're just boring white and taking up a lot of space. I have only 12 documents in this folder and it's a bit silly that I can't see them all at once.
2. You might also notice that these documents appear to be in a completely random order. They're actually in the order I last edited them in. I prefer my documents to be in alphabetical order, and this is an option that exists, but a) when switching to this view it for some reason defaults to reverse alphabetical order and I then have to manually select regular alphabetical order, and b) this setting will not be remembered between sessions.
3. I can't seem to get rid of the, "Need help? Chat with us" popup at the bottom of the page. It takes up an annoying amount of space, and I wish it was collapsible.
Things that worry me:
Instead of having a password system, Ellipsus sends you an email link every time you go to log in. There's nothing wrong with doing it this way I guess, since you can access the link from the same device you're accessing the website from, but it kind of just smacks of being different for the sake of being different. Makes me worry about security. Not that I write anything worth stealing.
Instead of having a normal profile system, Ellipsus uses Gravatar, which is some "universal internet account" nonsense that I will absolutely not be using. This probably won't be a huge issue, though, as I don't really plan on using the collaboration tools, so I won't need to make a profile. I wish I could change my email address, though, as I accidentally used the wrong one to make the account. I might make a new account.
I don't understand how all this is being paid for. There are no ads, the account is free, but the hosting is all done by Ellipsus. While text does not take up a ton of space to host, it does take up some space, and that costs money. Are the creators doing it out of their own pockets? Do they have a donor? Will there be donation drives to support it later? Or will they adopt advertisements in the future or introduce a "premium" option where you can pay for additional features? The last one normally wouldn't worry me, but since it is currently so bare-bones I'm a bit antsy. What if you have to pay for the option to have your documents in alphabetical order by default?
Their advertising is. Vague. I put this off for a long time because looking around on their website there was a lot of talk about how you're a writer and super creative and also they'll never steal your data to train AIs, but it was really hard to find a place where it outright said what the product was. This concerns me because it makes me feel like the company has something to hide.
Good things:
It's a platform that does the same thing as Google Docs without actually being Google Docs. This is a powerful pro. I'll probably keep using it for now.
Oh yeah and they don't have an app. A few years ago this would have gone in the less-than-ideal section for me but these days with the way app stores are about user generated content it's probably best to avoid the whole thing. I followed their suggestion to set a link on my homescreen (through Firefox) and it works very well. I was worried it might be laggy (Tumblr was laggy when I used it through Firefox) but it's been very responsive. No server access if you're not connected to the internet, but if you have the document already open then you can keep typing into it and it will update when you reconnect. This is the same way I used Google Docs back in the day and perfectly serviceable in my opinion.

Note
i'm considering applying for your anthology but am so extremely uncomfortable with the way google has been rolling full-steam ahead with AI in its various systems that even the thought of using google docs/drive is triggering to me at this point. do i have options for working with you without using google?
Hey anon!
I completely appreciate your reticence, and I share it. This is something we're actually working on - transitioning away from Google. It's extremely difficult to do, given how ubiquitous Google has gotten to be, but we've been pricing private/personal server options, looking at websites that offer similar functionality but, ya know, aren't Google, and otherwise entering the preliminary stages of trying to disentangle ourselves from... *gestures vaguely at the ever-growing dumpster fire that is Google* ...that.
For now, for submissions, I can tell you:
the current round of submission forms are still Google Forms
you can submit the writing sample as a .docx or .doc.
Basically: at this exact time, given that applications for Scholarly Pursuits are google forms, no, it's not possible to work with us without using Google at all.
But in the future, this is something we're working on, and yes, it should be possible in the future to work with us without using Google.
(Side note, I use Firefox as my browser and duckduckgo for websearch and have for a while, and the Press e-mail is through our web domain, which is hosted by Siteground. We've absolutely been trying to shift away from Google for a while, but in the last couple weeks we've begun to at least try to do a more thorough separation.)
Hope this helps!

Moriarty Console Churn Output - 06/05/2024
So I did the daily Murdle at just past midnight, and saw this on the Detective Dispatch. Let's check it out.
Tumblr media
If you've seen this and clicked that interesting looking red link, you have probably seen web churn like this!
FLASHING LIGHTS WARNING IF YOU INVESTIGATE THIS YOURSELF!
Screencap of murdle.com/mansion/m/iii.html
Tumblr media
Here are my current findings, including my own web crawling. This may be considered a spoiler or even noncanonical, as some of this information is not out for public release yet, and some may never be.
I would also like to make it clear that the Moriarty Webchurn is NOT the same as the Moriarty Console, which looks like this:
Screencap of murdle.com/console
Tumblr media
First off, there are FOUR of these same pages. The current accessible one is iii.html, though keep the others in mind for now. All four pages look the same, but not all of them have the base html in.
Tumblr media
As you can see from my still image, there are repeated images with random sequences of letters cut through some of them. Here are the repeated ones.
MORIARTY HAS HACKED THIS COMPUTER
CAN YOU SOLVE THE MYSTERY OF M.O.R.I.A.R.T.Y.?
DEDUCTIVE LOGICO CANNOT DEFEAT M.O.R.I.A.R.T.Y.
TVG NFIWOV 3 GL OVZIM NLIV ( translates to "GET MURDLE 3 TO LEARN MORE" with detective code ) -- this is also highlighted in green on the webpage!
M.O.R.I.A.R.T.Y. IS INSIDE YOUR COMPUTER
TEKTOPIA WILL COVER THE EARTH
I know that these are all of the phrases, and that the intercut strings also do not matter, as I found the original code. This is not hosted on murdle.com/m/iii.html, however. This screencap I took was of murdle.com/m/moriarty.html. The name of all tabs when clicked into these webpages is MORIARTY, with zalgo text applied.
You may find it yourself, if you go into inspect element -> sources tab -> moriarty.html and just take a good old look.
Tumblr media
You may also noticed that our handy highlighted phrase is missing from this list, but it is elsewhere in this selfsame document. The number 3 also has a bias in the random alphanumeric string, which is interesting to note, given that this was made to tie into Volume 3's release, and Moriarty's importance within Murdle Vol 3.
Tumblr media
As for more html combing, it's really weird that this screencap was taken of murdle.com/mansion/m/o.html's code.
Tumblr media
Look at the highlighted section, but also the rest of that line at large. The number skew as previously mentioned is missing, and there are a lot more potential characters at play here. It's weird that there are two near-exact copies of the same code, with such a minor difference that I don't think anyone would notice. That is such a weird detail, and I don't know if that will be important in the future.
Cast your mind back to June last year, the case of the Missing Murdles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These two locations feature very heavily in Volume 3, so it's worth putting these back out for public viewing. As you can tell, TekTopia is very much Moriarty's project, being "An AI-planned city". Linking this with the repeated phrase "TEKTOPIA WILL COVER THE EARTH", we can see that Moriarty is out of control and needs stopping.
My aside about murdle.com/console was not irrelevant, either, as it's notable that the console is driven by human interaction and feedback.
In line 958 of console/ that you find in the same way as you'd find the other code snippets posted so far, we reveal this information. I have kept the formatting as intact as I can over tumblr formatting.
MORIARTY is an AI engine built to generate murder mysteries for https://murdle.com/. Recently, the AI has requested the mass-solving of "CRYPTICS" by human participants. TO SOLVE A CRYPTIC, turn its squares green. Tapping a square flips its colour and the colours of the squares it touches. No one knows the function of this task, but MORIARTY has requested it.
Depending on the number of cryptics you solve, you also get given a title! All I want to know is who out there is genuinely solving thousands upon thousands of cryptics on one single browser. You okay, hun?
Tumblr media
Related - and note that this is non-canonical as it is unused code - I saw this! Fascinating stuff.
Tumblr media
Given what I know about computer program self-propagation - from my knowledge of computer viruses - it seems as if Moriarty spreads like a worm, as it seems to only propagate if you click into its links, and as it's a mystery its sharing is encouraged - or, in the case of the in-universe explanation, forced. (Think ILOVEYOU or Mydoom). The reason I believe this is because of the phrases that repeat in the web churn, and that opening up any of the Moriarty links is the same as being delivered that payload. RIP to my computer in the murdleverse, I guess!
This is also backed up by the fact that every Moriarty Churn tab crashes, though that might be my browser settings (Error code: STATUS_ACCESS_VIOLATION).
I'd love to know if the idea is to try and overload the tab's memory allocation to give the vibe of it being a computer virus-like deal, so please get in touch!
✨ || Theorycrafting
Moriarty has existed in the murdleverse for a decent amount of time, the earliest Wayback Machine link is April 7th, 2023. The code looks the same at first glance, and feels the same from a user perspective, so I am assuming that there have been no significant updates to the Moriarty Console code as of the time of this post. My understanding is that it is a TekCo produced AI charged with the creation of TekTopia, though its scope has long passed its original intent.
Given that this was released days after the Moriarty Console became public - assumedly ongoingly - implies also that Moriarty has a lot of human-driven data. This, interestingly enough, was also indicated by the suspect gallery update, as the original gallery pictures were stolen in-universe! Which is to say, even more data. (This also opens up a whole can of worms about "AI Art", but that's for another day)
I'd love to know what else people think about this, so do get in touch either on here, or in the detective club discord server!

Cloud Squatting: Understanding and Mitigating a Modern Cyber Threat
Tumblr media
Cloud computing is central to both business and personal data storage. A critical and emerging threat is cloud squatting. This phenomenon, a digital variant of the notorious domain squatting, involves the unauthorized occupation of cloud resources. It poses significant risks, making it a crucial concern for everyone, from casual cloud users to IT professionals and business owners.
Understanding cloud squatting
Cloud squatting is the practice of occupying cloud resources, such as storage accounts, domain names, or service identifiers, often for exploitative purposes. This could range from reselling these resources for profit to hosting harmful content or phishing scams. Cloud squatting not only mirrors traditional domain squatting but also extends to trafficking cloud resources like cloud computing instances or web applications, typically for malicious intentions.
The risks involved
Cloud squatting presents various risks:
Data theft: Unauthorized instances can store or transmit stolen data.
Security breaches: They can act as platforms for attacks on other systems.
Reputation damage: Companies suffer if their services are impersonated.
Legal and financial repercussions: In cases of brand damage and loss of customer trust.
For example, an attacker might use a service resembling a legitimate one, deceiving users into sharing sensitive information, leading to data breaches and tarnished reputations.
Mitigation strategies
Effective mitigation of cloud squatting involves a multi-faceted approach:
Proactive registration: Secure variations of your business’s cloud resource names.
Regular audits: Ensure all cloud services are legitimate.
Monitoring and alert systems: Detect unauthorized or misleading registrations.
Employee training: Educate about risks and the identification of suspicious services.
Legal protections: Utilize trademarks and enforce anti-squatting policies.
Security tools and best practices: Use AI-driven solutions and update security measures regularly.
Stakeholder education: Inform teams and customers about these risks.
Rapid response plan: Have a plan to address incidents swiftly.
Collaboration with cloud providers: Utilize their anti-squatting policies.
Reserved IP addresses: Transfer owned IPs to the cloud and manage records.
Policy enforcement: Prevent hard coding of IP addresses and use reserved IPv6 addresses.
The future of cloud security
As cloud technologies evolve, so do the tactics of cybercriminals. This makes proactive security measures and constant vigilance essential. Emerging technologies, like AI-driven security solutions, will play a crucial role in combating these threats.
Cloud squatting is a modern cyber threat that demands awareness, understanding, and proactive action. Implementing robust security strategies and staying informed about the latest trends in cloud security can significantly protect valuable digital assets. By addressing the risks and employing comprehensive mitigation strategies, individuals and businesses can safeguard their presence and integrity in the cloud.

My annoyance with the downfall of mainstream social media sites is that all the new ones popping up are either copies of other social media sites or are for a group of specific people and it makes it hard to actually grow how I want to.
Like blue sky is just a Twitter copy, co-host is a Tumblr copy, cara is an insta copy or at least that's what it looks like. It's just really annoying for a big social media to start declining in leadership or policies and for people to just make the same thing but with a smaller budget and more bugs. Like, I don't want to say this to discourage independent web devs and shit, I just don't think Twitter 2 is gonna take off when we already have Twitter with more people.
Also, as an artist, moving from instagram to cara is not my ideal at all :(. Cara is an app for artists and the problem with that is that on Instagram, a lot of the people who would reach out and commission me are not artists. The reason artists want to thrive on Instagram, Tumblr, or Twitter is not cus they're art sites, but because we can reach anyone there. Or at least for me.
I kinda don't know what to do if I have to leave Instagram cus everyone usually has an Instagram. It's easy for me to tag people on Instagram. It's easy for people to tag me on Instagram. It's easy for people to ask for my Instagram. I have my greater following on here, but Instagram was also one of my more successful platforms. To lose that because billionaire companies think AI is the future is so fucking depressing. I don't want to make a new login for an app I will back log all my art in and then forget about once I'm done with that.
I don't know what exactly I'm asking for but this is more just me complaining. I'm kinda sick of the state we're in right now.

Advanced SEO Techniques to Drive Organic Growth in 2024
Introduction In the competitive world of digital marketing, staying ahead in SEO requires more than basic on-page optimizations and link building. As search engines evolve, advanced SEO strategies become critical for maintaining and increasing visibility. This article dives into advanced SEO techniques to enhance your organic reach and keep you at the forefront of search engine results in 2024.
Optimize for User Intent: Beyond Keywords Understand the Four Types of User Intent: Informational, Navigational, Transactional, and Commercial. Craft content that addresses these specific intents.
Use Semantic Search & Natural Language: Google's understanding of language has improved, focusing on topics rather than exact keywords. Use synonyms and related terms naturally within content. Focus on Long-Tail Keywords: While short keywords are competitive, long-tail keywords often align better with specific user intent and are easier to rank for.
Advanced Content Structuring and Clustering Topic Clustering: Group related content into clusters with a central 'pillar' page. For instance, if you’re in digital marketing, a central "Advanced SEO Techniques" page can link to clusters on user intent, technical SEO, link-building tactics, etc.
Internal Linking Optimization: Strategically link cluster content back to the main page and vice versa. This structure signals relevance to search engines, boosting the authority of your core content.
Schema Markup: Implement structured data for rich snippets. Schema helps search engines understand the context, which can lead to enhanced visibility (like FAQ snippets or How-to sections).
Harnessing AI and Machine Learning for Content Strategy Use AI to Identify Content Gaps: Tools like MarketMuse, Clearscope, and SurferSEO analyze competitors’ content, helping you find and cover gaps. Leverage Predictive Analytics: Platforms like Google Analytics and other SEO tools can help predict trends. By focusing on future keywords and trends, you can stay ahead of competitors.
Content Personalization: With AI, you can deliver personalized content based on user behavior. Tailor CTAs and recommendations based on each user's interaction history.
Technical SEO Enhancements Site Speed Optimization: A fast site is essential. Use Core Web Vitals as a benchmark, and optimize images, reduce server response time, and implement lazy loading.
Crawl Budget Optimization: Ensure that only important pages are crawled by managing noindex tags and removing unnecessary pages (like duplicates).
Advanced Mobile SEO: With Google’s mobile-first indexing, having a fully optimized mobile site is vital. Test and improve responsiveness, mobile page speed, and usability.
Enhanced Backlinking Strategies Authority & Relevancy: Focus on getting links from high-authority, niche-relevant sites rather than generic links. Digital PR and Brand Mentions: Engage in PR campaigns that result in media mentions, which indirectly enhance SEO through brand visibility and trust.
Guest Posting 2.0: Instead of traditional guest posting, collaborate on in-depth studies or expert roundup articles, which naturally attract backlinks and add credibility.
Optimizing for Voice Search and Visual Search Voice Search SEO: Focus on answering ā€œWho, What, Where, When, and Howā€ questions directly. Optimize for natural-sounding, conversational phrases. Visual Search: Ensure images are optimized with descriptive, relevant filenames and alt text. Use image sitemaps to help Google discover your images. Rich Media Content: Video and audio content is becoming a major part of SEO. Hosting transcribed podcasts or adding video summaries can cater to different audience preferences.
User Experience (UX) Signals as a Ranking Factor Optimize Core Web Vitals: Google emphasizes page experience. Improving metrics like Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), First Input Delay (FID), and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) can improve rankings. Reduce Bounce Rate and Dwell Time: Engage visitors by enhancing readability and structuring content for skimming. Break up content with headers, bullet points, and visuals. UX Design and Interactivity: Create a seamless user journey with an intuitive, interactive, and easy-to-navigate website.
Focus on E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) Author and Site Authority: Create a detailed author bio and ensure content on your site is credible and reliable. Regularly Update Content: Fresh, accurate content is crucial, particularly in YMYL (Your Money, Your Life) niches. Build Trust Signals: Showcasing testimonials, case studies, and credentials can boost trustworthiness. Conclusion With Google and other search engines continuously refining algorithms, advanced SEO techniques are essential to remain visible and relevant. By focusing on user intent, optimizing your site structure, leveraging AI, and enhancing the user experience, you can maintain a competitive edge. Implementing these advanced SEO tactics will not only boost your search rankings but also improve your audience’s experience, leading to sustained organic growth in 2024.
This post can be further customized by adding more specific tips or examples, depending on your target audience and their familiarity with these advanced concepts. Let me know if you need adjustments or if you'd like more in-depth details on any of these sections!

About Ai art, I personally believe it could do a lot of good IF they had the consent of the artist the ai trains on because now many AI programs are being trained in a way small artists who already struggle to make a living. I think Ideally the companies could pay the artists whose images they use to train their AI with but I know it will be unlikely, I don’t think AI art is the problem but how it is being used right now in a way that small artist are collateral damage to it’s development and people making AI art and sell it are profiting while the artists whose art is stolen are in a shitty position. I wish they would develope art AI’s in a more ethical way but under capitalism that is unlikely that is all, hope you have a good day!
It's a nice thought but this isn't just rich corporations vs artists, there are in sheer numbers way more researchers and individuals who play around with MLAs locally on their own computers as a hobby and don't make any money off of it.
Something like that would just make it so it becomes inaccessible to most individuals, leaving corporations who already own huge amounts of data to have a monopoly on the tech. Just like copyright laws generally don't work in artists' favor, this wouldn't either.
There's no reason for me to believe that companies like Adobe, Reddit, Twitter, Tumblr, DevianArt, Pinterest and all other for-profit websites that host data wouldn't just update their terms of service to make it so everything you post (text, images, video, audio) will be legally owned by them. Because if you make data even more profitable, you can bet corporations would take that and run with it.
I feel like ppl used to be more aware of that back in the day, I remember "everything you post to the internet will stay on the internet, anyone can download it" being basic safety advice and I feel like it's only getting more necessary to be aware of this. It's not just art. Every time you post something, even if it's just a text-only shitpost, that can and will be picked up by web crawlers. Not saying it's a good thing but that's the current reality. Not even massive corporations like Disney can do anything about it. Bing doesn't stop me from doing this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(the prompt for this one was literally "AI stealing copyrighted Disney & Pixar characters")
Something like a publicly available opt-in only dataset created as a community-project could become a better alternative in the future. Especially if the anti-AI push does empower corporations to a push for copyright laws that would give them the upper hand. It would take a long time to gather the necessary data that way but it might end up being a way for hobbyists, researchers and artists to continue using AI if it becomes pay-walled.
