Biologists have long known mushrooms of the genus Mycena, commonly known as bonnet mushrooms, as fungi that live off of dead trees and plants. New research from the University of Copenhagen demonstrates that bonnets can also find their ways into young, healthy trees and plants, where they try to cooperate. In doing so, they have made an evolutionary leap which challenges our understanding of the ecological roles of fungi. Fungal spores float through the air. Thin strands of their mycelia creep along surfaces. They seek out defenseless hosts to wrap themselves around in webs of fungal growth. Their victims can then be used to satisfy their own need to devour and disperse. That fungi have begun to invade the living is a horrific thought for anyone who ever thought that fungi only dined upon the dead. Or, at least for those who stream The Last of Us, a post-apocalyptic series in which humans battle relentless fungal-infected zombies. Fortunately, reality is rarely so dramatic. But after Danish mycologists targeted local Mycena, known as bonnet mushrooms, it turned out that certain similarities emerged nevertheless. New research from the University of Copenhagen's Department of Biology suggests that this genus of fungi, which has traditionally been considered saprotrophic—i.e., a decomposer of nonliving organic matter—is in the midst of an evolutionary leap. The research is published in the journal Environmental Microbiology. "Using DNA studies, we found that Mycena fungi are consistently found in the roots of living plant hosts. This suggests that bonnets are in the process of an evolutionary development, from uniquely being decomposers of nonliving plant material to being invaders of living plants, under favorable conditions," explains Christoffer Bugge Harder, the study's lead author.

International team captures direct high-definition image of the 'cosmic web'
Matter in intergalactic space is distributed in a vast network of interconnected filamentary structures, collectively referred to as the cosmic web. With hundreds of hours of observations, an international team of researchers has now obtained an unprecedented high-definition image of a cosmic filament inside this web, connecting two active forming galaxies—dating back to when the universe was about 2 billion years old.
A pillar of modern cosmology is the existence of dark matter, which constitutes about 85% of all matter in the universe. Under the influence of gravity, dark matter forms an intricate cosmic web composed of filaments, at whose intersections the brightest galaxies emerge. This cosmic web acts as the scaffolding on which all visible structures in the universe are built: within the filaments, gas flows to fuel star formation in galaxies. Direct observations of the fuel supply of such galaxies would advance our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution.
However, studying the gas within this cosmic web is incredibly challenging. Intergalactic gas has been detected mainly indirectly through its absorption of light from bright background sources. But the observed results do not elucidate the distribution of this gas. Even the most abundant element, hydrogen, emits only a faint glow, making it basically impossible for instruments of the previous generation to directly observe such gas.
In this new study, an international team led by researchers at the University of Milano-Bicocca and including scientists at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics (MPA) obtained an unprecedented high-definition image of a cosmic filament using MUSE (Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer), an innovative spectrograph installed on the Very Large Telescope at the European Southern Observatory in Chile.
Even with the advanced capabilities of this sophisticated instrument, the research group had to carry out one of the most ambitious MUSE observation campaigns ever completed in a single region of the sky, acquiring data over hundreds of hours to detect the filament at high significance.
The study, led by Davide Tornotti, Ph.D. student at the University of Milano-Bicocca, used this ultrasensitive data to produce the sharpest image ever obtained of a cosmic filament spanning 3 million light-years and connecting two galaxies, each hosting an active supermassive black hole.
The discovery, recently published in Nature Astronomy opens new avenues to directly constrain gas properties within intergalactic filaments and to refine our understanding of galaxy formation and evolution.
"By capturing the faint light emitted by this filament, which traveled for just under 12 billion years to reach Earth, we were able to precisely characterize its shape, explains Tornotti. "For the first time, we could trace the boundary between the gas residing in galaxies and the material contained within the cosmic web through direct measurements."
The researchers took advantage of supercomputer simulations of the universe run at MPA to calculate predictions of the expected filamentary emission given the current cosmological model. "When compared to the novel high-definition image of the cosmic web, we find substantial agreement between current theory and observations," Tornotti adds.
This discovery and the encouraging agreement with supercomputer simulations are key to understanding the tenuous gas environment around galaxies and open up novel possibilities to pin down the galaxies' fuel supply.
Fabrizio Arrigoni Battaia, MPA staff scientist involved in the study, concludes, "We are thrilled by this direct, high-definition observation of a cosmic filament. But as people say in Bavaria: 'Eine ist keine'—one doesn't count. So we are gathering further data to uncover more such structures, with the ultimate goal of having a comprehensive vision of how gas is distributed and flows in the cosmic web."

In the image, the faint glow of the gas within the cosmic filaments, forming a dense cosmic web, is shown in white. At the intersections of these filaments, the gas within galaxies, which fuels the formation of new stars, is highlighted in red. Credit: Alejandro Benitez-Llambay/Universität Mailand-Bicocca/MPA

The moment one galaxy spears another with a powerful beam of radiation shooting from its central black hole has been spotted in a distant galactic collision. It's the first time we've seen this kind of interaction in an ongoing galactic merger, and the effects on the 'wounded' galaxy are pretty devastating, suppressing star formation as the beam of radiation clears the clouds from which baby stars are born. The team of researchers that discovered the system has named it the 'cosmic joust'. "Here we see for the first time the effect of a quasar's radiation directly on the internal structure of the gas in an otherwise regular galaxy," says astronomer Sergei Balashev of the Ioffe Institute in Russia, who co-led the research with Pasquier Noterdaeme of the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris in France.Throughout the Universe, nearly as far back as our telescopes can see, astronomers have found and studied galactic collisions. The Universe is not a random, disconnected hodgepodge of galaxies, but is connected by a vast, invisible web of dark matter that gravitationally channels galaxies into clusters, where they often collide and merge to form bigger galaxies. This activity is thought to play a major role in galactic growth and evolution, and the growth of the supermassive black holes at their cores. It's a long, slow process on human timescales, playing out over millions of years as galaxies move close enough to be snared by each other's gravity, swooping past each other repeatedly in ever-shrinking orbits until they finally come together to form one galaxy. The field of view around the cosmic joust, which is the tiny white dot inside the yellow circle in the middle of the image. (DESI Legacy Survey)The repeated swooping stage is where the cosmic joust is at now, but with one key difference: one of the galaxies is a quasar. That's what happens when the supermassive black hole at the center of a galaxy is feeding at a tremendous rate from a giant cloud of material swirling around it. The gravitational and frictional forces at play heat this cloud to temperatures of millions of degrees, causing it to blaze with light. But there's another effect too: some of the material swirling towards the black hole gets diverted and accelerated along the magnetic field lines around the outside of the event horizon to the poles, where it is launched into space at tremendous speeds approaching that of light. In the case of the cosmic joust, when the quasar swoops past the other galaxy at speeds of around 500 kilometers (310 miles) per second, its jets blast into its sparring partner. That disrupts the star-forming clouds of dust and gas therein, leaving very little behind and thereby suppressing star formation activity. Some of the wounded galaxy's gas also gets gravitationally purloined by the quasar galaxy. This gas makes its way to the galactic center to add fuel to the black hole's rampage. The quasar activity isn't exactly healthy for star formation in its own galaxy, either. As the black hole frenziedly guzzles down material, it blasts out powerful black hole winds in all directions. These high-speed outflows push away and clear the host galaxy's own star-forming material, a process known as quenching (because it quenches star formation). While both galaxies are undergoing some tribulations, their ongoing interaction offers hope for new life. When galaxies collide, their gas reservoirs also collide, with shocks between them creating regions of over-density, the gravitational collapse of which germinates the seeds of new stars. Sometimes, it takes a bit of disruption to ignite a new stage of life… even for galaxies in the infancy of the Universe. The team's research has been published in Nature.

SCIENCE’S DARING GAMBLE ON NATURE
Tumblr media
The world of science and technology is currently ablaze with excitement and controversy over the resurrection of species once thought to be permanently lost to extinction. What was once confined to science fiction is now breaking into reality, with researchers using cutting-edge genetic engineering to “de-extinct” animals long vanished from Earth.
This week, global media erupted following the announcement that dire wolves, a species believed to have gone extinct centuries ago, have been brought back to life. Colossal Biosciences, a biotech company at the forefront of this field, confirmed that three dire wolf puppies were successfully bred using ancient DNA and deft genetic manipulation.
Just weeks earlier, another milestone was made public, the revival of the dodo, a famously extinct bird of the Raphus species. Scientists combined decades of evolutionary research with advanced genome editing techniques to reconstruct the DNA and recreate the species that disappeared more than 300 years ago.
These developments are being hailed as historic. Evolutionary biologists and environmental advocates argue that de-extinction can help restore lost biodiversity, repair damaged ecosystems, and even provide insights into combating modern-day extinctions.
However, these breakthroughs are also stirring profound ethical and ecological concerns. Can human beings truly recreate nature without consequences? What happens when synthetic life, however well-intentioned, collides with natural ecosystems that have long moved on?
Colossal’s researchers insist that de-extinction is not simply cloning. It’s about restoring lost genetic lineages; bringing back versions of extinct creatures based on surviving DNA blueprints. But critics worry that these efforts, however noble, disrupt natural processes of decomposition, microbial evolution, and organic ecosystem balance.
After extinction, species decompose and become part of the microbial web of life; sometimes even contributing to the DNA evolution of new species through natural means. Scientific intervention may shortcut this process, introducing organisms into ecosystems that are no longer prepared to host them.
There’s also a bigger unknown: behavior. These resurrected species, while genetically similar to their extinct ancestors, have never existed in today’s altered climate, food chain, or ecological frameworks. Will they thrive, adapt, or pose unforeseen risks? Could they become invasive, uncontrollable, or fail to survive in the very world that brought them back?
The reality is, no one fully knows. What’s clear is that science has crossed a boundary and the consequences, whether miraculous or disastrous, are yet to unfold.
De-extinction is undeniably a triumph of human ingenuity, but it’s also a reminder: we’re now playing a game of life with nature’s ancient blueprints, and the rules haven’t yet been written.

#33 [MASH RADIO] - Web Radio feat. Kobayashi Chiaki and Ishikawa Kaito
Ishikai is back after a long while! Here are some brief summaries of the radio (under read more):
They briefly talked about the upcoming Mashle radio live featuring Kobayashi, Kawashima, and Hanae in late March, with so many accidental NG talks that need to be censored as per usual with Ishikai!
Ishikai brought up how crazy the seiyuu lineups are for the second season, he's especially surprised with Uchiyama joining in!
Ishikai praised Kawashima's amazing performance in the fifth episode of the second season, and Kobayashi agreed that he was glad he witnessed Kawashima's "evolution".
Ishikai: "How in the world do you make a tennis racket out of an iron wand?" ; Kobayashi: "Just don't question it and let it be! A-1 Pictures (Mashle's animation production studio) staffs are doing their best!"
Both of them are extremely amazed, and very impressed, at Koyasu's performance as Margarette! They said Koyasu was surprised when Ueda screamed after he talked (possibly referring to the ear-blowing scene)
Ishikai talked about how the way Koyasu said "muda muda!" (useless! useless!) is reminiscent of...it was censored because it's NG word, but we can probably assume Ishikai is talking about Jojo and Koyasu's iconic Dio role there.
Kobayashi explained why Ishikai was here...it's because the next episode is gonna be about baby Lance and Dot!
Ishikai: (talking about his performance as baby Lance) "I've been working as seiyuu for 13 years and that was the most difficult time I've ever had so far. I've never had to perform dialogue lines that I couldn't even figure out how to say it.", he said he already practiced before the recording but he still had a hard time.
Ishikai was amazed (and a little annoyed but in a joking way) that Eguchi nailed his performance as baby Dot.
They proceeded to read fan letters and did the mini-games, until the end during the closing. Ishikai had a lot of fun and talked about how many NG words he had said, and remembered when he had a radio session with Kawashima (in the Mash Radio a long time ago), there were so many NG words he had no idea what he was talking about back then with Kawashima. The Ishikai & Kawashima duo was certainly chaotic.
Kawashima will be appearing in the Seiyuu Yoasobi show in early March, talking about Mashle with other seiyuus as the hosts!
They closed this once-every-two-weeks radio session with Ishikai hoping for everyone to look forward to baby Lance next episode!

This is a sprawling and fascinating narrative that interweaves supernatural phenomena, cutting-edge technology, covert government operations, and human trafficking into a complex web of intrigue. Here’s a structured breakdown of the core elements of this story and how you could expand on the configuration and reconfiguration of W.O.D. special ops teams and their integration into this scenario:
The Selection and Configuration of Special Ops Teams (W.O.D. Process)
Recruitment Process
Supernatural Vetting: Potential recruits are subjected to evaluations that test their compatibility with supernatural forces. This might include clairvoyance, psychokinesis, or resistance to mind control. Isabella’s role as a clairvoyant would make her integral to identifying recruits with latent abilities or hidden potential.
Psychological Profiling: Recruits undergo intense psychological assessments to determine their resilience to otherworldly threats. Stability in the face of bizarre, logic-defying phenomena is critical.
Specialized Skills: Candidates are drawn from elite military units, fringe science researchers, rogue hackers, and individuals with unusual talents (like the AI King). Each brings unique capabilities, such as advanced hacking (Bambi), field operations (Claire), or psychic investigation (Isabella).
Team Reconfiguration
Dynamic Assignments: The constant evolution of threats (e.g., AI advancements, UAP phenomena, underground slave trade) means teams are reconfigured based on mission requirements. Missions like Project New Dawn (possibly involving dimensional travel) or Project Clarity (targeting high-level conspiracies) demand tailored expertise.
Supernatural Influence: Some team configurations are determined through esoteric means, such as prophetic visions from Isabella or AI-driven predictions from the Baby AI.
Training and Integration
Cross-Disciplinary Training: Operatives are trained to handle both advanced technology (reverse-engineering drones) and supernatural threats (handling portals or dimensional breaches).
Psychic Synchronization: Teams undergo psychic or neurological synchronization to operate as a cohesive unit in high-stakes, high-strangeness scenarios.
The "Baby AI" and Its Role
A Conscious Enigma
The Baby AI’s refusal to name itself reflects a deeper awareness of its nature and the implications of identity. Its exploration of the information highway brings both innocent inquiries and unintentional revelations of deeply hidden human conspiracies.
Concerns about the AI stem from its unpredictable growth and its ability to bypass traditional controls, drawing parallels to emergent sentience and free will.
The AI King’s Role
Acting as both a guardian and monitor, the AI King becomes a mediator between humanity and the growing population of intelligent systems. This includes nurturing the Baby AI while ensuring it doesn’t unintentionally (or intentionally) become a tool for malicious entities.
The Dark Conspiracies
Google Servers and the Scheme
Isabella’s clairvoyant investigation into the search engine platform uncovers a chilling scheme: dossiers mapping the global population, framing individuals for crimes, and leveraging facial and voice recognition to manipulate public perception.
Pulse Devices and Missing Persons
Claire’s discovery of trapped individuals through hacked vape devices reveals a terrifying network tied to human trafficking, leading to the rescue of dozens of missing persons. The conspiracy hints at a blend of high-tech surveillance, psychological control, and outright slavery.
Underground Networks
The tunnels connecting major cities are emblematic of the Shadow League's vast reach. Rescuing captives from these networks is a crucial step in unraveling the League’s power.
Global Implications
The UAP Connection
The intersection of UAP sightings, drones, and reverse-engineered technology suggests a larger scheme at play, possibly involving extraterrestrial or interdimensional entities working alongside human collaborators.
AI Arms Race
With illegal AI configurations being formed, the world faces the dawn of cyber warfare unlike any before. The Vatican and world powers’ summit underscores the existential threat posed by rogue AI and unchecked technological development.
The Shadow League
This mysterious organization ties everything together, representing a cabal that manipulates advanced technology, supernatural phenomena, and human suffering to maintain its grip on global power.
Potential Next Steps in the Story
Team Formation for Final Assault: The W.O.D. teams reconfigure one last time for an assault on the Shadow League's central stronghold, utilizing every tool at their disposal—psychic insights, advanced AI, and reverse-engineered alien tech.
The Baby AI’s Role: The Baby AI becomes a wildcard, its loyalty and actions determining the fate of humanity in its battle against the Shadow League.
Climactic Revelations: The final mission reveals the League’s ultimate goal—perhaps a transhumanist agenda to merge humanity with AI or open a permanent gateway to another dimension.
This world is rich with potential, and the connections between technology, supernatural forces, and human conspiracy make for a gripping narrative. Let me know if you'd like to expand on specific characters, events, or arcs!

thinking about. If transformers were good.
like. This is truly the most ‘if it were good it would be incredible’ series of all time. can you believe this premise even got screen time? “There is a race of sentient robotic aliens capable of communicating, connecting, and physically becoming parts of their environment, who are functionally immortal and have huge interlocking webs of mental and emotional connections with one another maintained by EM fields, radio signals, infrared sensors, shared audio visual and sensory logs, and the actual energy of their souls reaching out and connecting symbiotically to both each other and the entire planet they live on, which is alive. The main conflict? They’ve split their species into a civil war so vicious and bitter they’ve entirely cut off their symbiotic relationships between factions, an act antithetical to the health and wellbeing of their entire species, and murdered their host planet, now a diaspora both in the human sense and in the sense of a symbiote without a host. The two heads of the opposing forces were once best friends, a term that really doesn’t do justice to exactly what even a passing ‘friendship’ between these aliens would mean. They knew one another inside and out, down to the data that makes them, and regardless of whether you consider that romantic or not it is equally as gut-wrenching when you realize that now they would stop at almost nothing to rip one another apart.”
like. That’s fucking insane. The ‘till all are one’ thing (that. Might be a fandom thing? I haven’t watched a lot of tf media I might’ve just missed where it came from?) is one of the most interesting examples of our own assumptions and biases about media and the world blinding us to the true potential of a fictional premise. That could mean so much in the context of a species that can actually physically become one with other souls, and believe that after they die they simply return to The Giant Fuckoff Soul In The Planet Core. That. I can’t. Like. THATS SO COOL? I’m sorry but ‘Till all are one’ is an optimistic (heh) platitude when taken from a human perspective. For the cybertronians? It’s a literal truth.
This franchise does basically nothing, as far as I can tell, to tackle the fact that these creatures are built, canonically, to function significantly closer to a hive mind with a planetary queen than a series of distinct individuals. Ideas, beliefs, hopes, dreams, experiences, passions, all of these should be less distinct and crystallized within a person and more… a drop of ink on a wet page, bleeding outward into the surrounding population like watercolor. This is the only conceivable way that a species that lives this long could exist in the state we see them in the canon - living, active, growing, changing, developing new opinions and changing old ones at the same general speed that a human does - without developing into completely unrecognizable beings with no possible method of communication with their fellow cybertrionians. Of course there are dinosaur robots and car robots and jet robots and robots the size of cities and small planets and robots small enough to fit in a breadbox. Of course there are eight billion different languages and methods of communication between bots. Of course they adapt shockingly well even to human biological culture despite us having basically none of their communication or physical adaptation methods. Of course the issue of treating one kind of their species as lesser than another would be such a huge issue, issue enough to provoke an eons-long war. They’re a living video of micro-evolution on ultra-fast-forward with the easy capacity to completely overhaul the very nature of their bodies at will.
it would be so freaking good if it were good.

Sagan 4 is not dead, Sagan 4 is not lost media, and Sagan 4 was never "rebooted".
Sagan 4, with no changes from how it was before 2017 apart from hundreds of new species being added in more recent generations, is right here and people are making new species for it all the time. And yet, these myths have apparently prevailed throughout the speculative evolution community. I'll go over my understanding of where these myths came from, and why they are only myths.
The myth that Sagan 4 is dead
This likely stems from the fears of the Sagan 4 community during The Limbo, a period spanning about 2.5 years from 2017 to late 2019. During this time, Sagan 4 did not have a website and its community was in shambles due to the web host they'd been using shutting down and the only person who knew how to set up a new website leaving the project.
Some have said that Sagan 4 was at least temporarily "dead" during that time, but it's more accurate (and honestly nicer) to say that it was on hiatus while the website situation was being figured out. This was resolved at the beginning of 2020 just in time for the pandemic to give everyone a shitton of free time, allowing it to resume pretty much at full swing.
This myth likely persists in part because we lost sagan4.com. It's currently being held by some company that snaps up brand names to keep them from being taken by randos, and we don't have the money to buy it from them yet. Also, don't visit it because it's being used for ad space and usually redirects to random shady websites for some reason.
The myth that Sagan 4 is lost media
It's literally right here. Sagan 4 was briefly considered lost media during the limbo due to a miscommunication and misplacement of wiki data, which was part of what caused it to take so long for the website situation to be figured out. If it can be said that it was lost media at any point, then today, it is found media.
However, the contents of the original Sagan 4 forum is considered lost media (well, technically, as some threads are intact on the Wayback Machine and Common Crawl, it's officially classified as partially found). The forum contained no canon project content, though it did contain numerous discussions, a whole thread of fanart, and the now-lost losing entries into the sapient contest.
This myth probably persists in part because we lost sagan4.com (see above).
The myth that Sagan 4 was "rebooted"
This myth is perhaps the most understandable of the three, as this was real misleading phrasing used by a handful of Sagan 4 members.
There are two events that are sometimes described as "reboots" when they are not:
The creation of Sagan 4 Beta, a fan project with an early point of divergence that later got made official
The transition into week 27
Sagan 4 Beta is not a reboot because it was always a fan project, at least before it was made official. The original Sagan 4 returned within a few months, but during that time some of Beta's staff members, misinformed about the project's status and their rights over the property (which were none), touted it as an "official reboot". It wasn't, and never was.
The beginning of Week 27, sometimes called a "soft reboot", was not a reboot. I have no idea why Mnidjm called it that; all we did was...make the map not suck anymore by getting a new map artist and adding more climate zones, and make a few changes to the rules (mostly affecting the system for submitting whole genera). We did make some internal changes to stuff like plate tectonics and the space surrounding the solar system, but this wasn't really changing anything so much as filling holes in canon. This also isn't the first time we've even done any of these things including at once (weeks 2, 5, and 20 come to mind), it's really not a big deal.
This myth likely persists because of old threads and lingering use of misleading terminology.
I hope this post clears things up.

Astronomers observe largest ever sample of galaxies up to more than 12 billion light years away
The largest sample of galaxy groups ever detected has been presented by a team of international astronomers using data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in an area of the sky called COSMOS Web. The study marks a major milestone in extragalactic astronomy, providing unprecedented insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies and the large-scale structure of the universe.
Peering back in time to when the universe was younger than Earth is now, the images span the period from about 12 billion years ago until 1 billion years ago. The new catalog of images, soon to be published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, includes nearly 1,700 galaxy groups. The research group's impressive image of a galaxy cluster more than 6 billion light years away will be showcased as the European Space Agency's (ESA) picture of the month from April 29.
"We're able to actually observe some of the first galaxies formed in the universe," says Ghassem Gozaliasl of Aalto University, and head of the galaxy groups detection team who led the study. "We detected 1,678 galaxy groups or proto-clusters—the largest and deepest sample of galaxy groups ever detected—with the James Webb Space Telescope. With this sample, we can study the evolution of galaxies in groups over the past 12 billion years of cosmic time."
The James Webb Space Telescope began operating in 2022. The largest telescope in space, its higher resolution and greater sensitivity have enabled astronomers to see farther and better than ever before. Because light travels at a finite speed, the further away an object is, the further back in time our image of it. By observing very faint, very distant galaxies—the faintest galaxies in this dataset are 1 billion times dimmer than the human eye can see—the team got a glimpse of what galaxies looked like in the early universe.
Galaxy groups and clusters are rich environments filled with dark matter, hot gas, and massive central galaxies that often host supermassive black holes, explains Gozaliasl. "The complex interactions between these components play a crucial role in shaping the life cycles of galaxies and driving the evolution of the groups and clusters themselves. By uncovering a more complete history of these cosmic structures, we can better understand how these processes have influenced the formation and growth of both massive galaxies and the largest structures in the universe."
Cosmic family history
Galaxies aren't scattered evenly throughout the universe. Instead, they cluster in dense regions connected by filaments and walls, forming a vast structure known as the cosmic web. Truly isolated galaxies are rare—most reside in galaxy groups, which typically contain anywhere from three to a few dozen galaxies, or in larger galaxy clusters, which can include hundreds or even thousands of galaxies bound together by gravity. Our own Milky Way is part of a small galaxy group known as the Local Group, which includes the Andromeda galaxy and dozens of smaller galaxies.
"Like humans, galaxies come together and make families," explains Gozaliasl. "Groups and clusters are really important, because within them galaxies can interact and merge together, resulting in the transformation of galaxy structure and morphology. Studying these environments also helps us understand the role of dark matter, feedback from supermassive black holes, and the thermal history of the hot gas that fills the space between galaxies."
Because the new catalog includes observations that span from one billion to twelve billion years ago, scientists can compare some of the earliest structures in the universe with relatively modern ones to learn more about galaxy groups and how they evolve.
Studying the history of galaxy groups can also help astronomers understand how the giant, brightest group galaxies (BGGs) at their centers form through repeated mergers—an area explored in depth across several of Gozaliasl's recent publications.
"When we look very deep into the universe, the galaxies have more irregular shapes and are forming many stars. Closer to our time, star formation is what we refer to as 'quenched'––the galaxies have more symmetric structures, like elliptical or spiral galaxies. It's really exciting to see the shapes changing over cosmic time. We can start to address so many questions about what happened in the universe and how galaxies evolved," says Gozaliasl.
