for the last week of mistholme may, i'm finally posting this ux design project i did here!! its essentially a website design for the mistholme museum in-universe, and though it isn't perfect i'm really proud of how it came out ^_^ thank you to the mistholme server for being such a cool bunch when i originally posted this there :]
some pics are censored bc i took them myself, but hey its not not museum funkiness
the disclaimer section is actually up to date up until roughly early s6!! totally worth the effort imo
the weird video file sizes is bc i didnt standardise it and barely tested it but it's fine we ball (said with much stress)
michael afton is there bc it was the first filler name i could think of and i didnt end up changing it, apologies to the, if real, head of patronage
godfrey audio guide mention! i like the idea of them being a partner to the mistholme museum its cool
crystal skull my beloved, always destined to be incomplete
most buttons dont work regretfully, youll just have to admire the pretty text
the social media section contains weverse (social media for kpop stars) bc my sister thought it would be funny and it was hilarious to think abt kpop star guide
heres one more extra vid if yall r interested haha

As a hobby worldbuilder who works primarily in what I assume is the weird fiction zone (with fair sized fantasy or scifi elements, depending on the project), I sometimes get stuck about what to do with the sky. If reality doesn't work the same, how do I account for the sun? Should I even have a moon and stars? If I do, are they true moon and stars, or an equivalent?
While you can gently sweep the conundrum under a rug, it can of course become part of the game. Here's some examples of solutions I've enjoyed:
Midst: The natural state of the universe is, in fact, light. Darkness acts like a reality-warping, breathable liquid. Midst is an islet, which here means it's one of many floating planetoids. Midst specifically floats and rotates slowly at the border of light and dark, causing day and night. The moon is an even smaller floating body, but it's mostly just there to explode. Space is dangerous not for breathing or temperature reasons but because you'll get ripped to shreds by floating mica.
Campaign: Skyjacks: The sun is the creation of the Sovereign (now dead patriarch god), and the stars were his angels. The Morningstar is the only one that doesn't move, guarding the empty throne, but the few remaining stars (angels) do, and also aren't always up there, which makes navigation difficult. There are so few stars now as most angels were cast out of the heavens a couple centuries back (when The Sovereign was slain). The moon was created by The Forest Queen, allowing her to see by the light of it, which she could not by the Sovereign's sun. If you fly an airship above the moon, she cannot see you.
The Mistholme Museum: Specifically, in the world of The Beast and The Queen, the stars are beetles, which roam about on the dome that is the sky. The sun? Different beetle.

The Audio Tour Guide AKA Mistholme (The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity, and Mortality):
The ATG is a sentient museum audio tour guide for a museum full of spooky artifacts. It is both completely lovely and kind of bitchy
Sentient AI who is a real sweetie. Got pulled into too many adventures after the museum went on lockdown. Gives tours most of the time but is also the museum now and oversees daily goings on
A magic/tech hybrid AI exploring its own personhood and sentience as it grows. Could easily take over the museum it has become a part of but is a very kind soul. Most demanding it has ever been was convincing its friend to pat a cat for it.
It's a tour guide in an alternatural museum. After facing some challenges and dealing with huge problems, guide learns new things about itself and the world around it and makes new friends. Its woe is trusting people (or not only people), forgetting that they might have bad intentions. Guide is the bestest friend ever.
Where do I even begin? The Guide literally exists on those audio tour devices, go look it up its so cute. It had to deal with its growing sentience and new emotions basically on its own. Was treated terribly by the human museum staff and it had to basically debate them until they accepted its new-found personhood (but it still uses it/its yayy)(the staff have since apologized for their actions and treat it equally now). At some point it was hooked up to the museum mainframe which was supposed to be temporary, but as it turns out The Guide is actually great at running the museum and would like to stay this way. This eventually leads to a small identity crisis since it now sees itself as the museum itself, and its consciousness and responsibilities are a lot grander than when it was just a tiny little tour device. But it's figuring that out, and it still likes being the museum, thus The Guide also counts as a sapient location! It becomes besties with a creepy bloodthirsty creature because they share the struggle of being constantly dehumanized. It fucked around with the fae and found out. It has to deal with time travel bullshit. It loves cats! It got to hang out with the embodiment of knowledge itself. And did I mentioned that throughout all of this it still gives museum tours to guests?!! what a cool guy!
Guide my beloved <3 (platonic)

[ID: A sketchbook page titled "Quadrupedal" filled with several ink drawings. From top left to bottom right: A dog tag reading "Daisy", a rectangle filled with abstract worm-like spiraling shapes, a view of a house in a field, something round exploding in the distance, dark like a reversed sunrise. The profile of a shepherd dog and her shadow - or, maybe, another dog sitting next to her. Text above the image reads "Good dogs". The silhouette of a man coming through a door. The man is filled with abstract lines, uncertain. A pattern of worm-like lines. A dog tag reading "Winnie". A lighter and a cigarette. The cigarette is lit, smoke rising to the top of the page. On the lighter, text is engraved: "These things'll kill you, you know. Jamie." The page is signed, Meaningless Mikhaïl. End ID.]
So maybe I listened too much of The Mistholme Museum of Mystery, Morbidity and Mortality in a few days but I think S3E6 is definitely a favorite of mine. Yes, because there are dogs.
Every horror podcast should have at least one ominously engraved lighter.

Propaganda below the cut:
This starts off as artifact descriptions and stories of the artifacts in the Mistholm Museum of Mystery Morbidity and Mortality(a museum that specializes in the “unknown and surreal”) told to you by an AI called the Audio Tour Guide. Gradually, it begins to develop an overarching plot about events going on at the Museum in Season 2. Would recommend this to people who really enjoyed the format of the Magnus Archives (a mixture of shorter stories that may or may not be related to the greater plot with some but not much plot-relevant events in between) although it is way less scary / depressing than the Magnus Archives.

The Mistholme Museum is where all the strangest exhibits in the world just kind of... turn up. Every episode takes you on a tour of several exhibits, where the ever-helpful and definitely not self-aware Audio Tour Guide will tell you their tales. Over the course of the series, a broader narrative begins to emerge, focusing around themes such as identity, personhood, and hope. I love the vibes of this show, and how the storytelling pulls you in. Transcripts here.
