Ive been working on this book for over a year now and I’m so so proud to finally have it done. There’s a lot of stuff I could say about this bind but it mostly boils down to “holy shit I actually did it that’s so cool”

A confession: I LOVE fics that use the Disco Elysium format, and The Locked Tomb is just the perfect fit for this type of AUs (and going over the top with book design). And this one is so so so good!

🫀 I knew I wanted to mimic the layout of the text in DE basically as soon as I finished reading and saw the gorgeous illustration by @smapis.

🫀 The cover is inspired by the description of the card, but instead of trying to recreate it exactly (and messing with glitter) I went for the same theme and the kind of DIY arts and crafts style project vibe. Hence my first buttonhole stitch binding, with the heart painted with chromatographic ink (the color is called Unicorn’s Tears) and inked it over in hot pink with a glass dip pen. I also painted the folds of the pages and filled in some of the frames (where the narrator is YOU).

🫀 The rest of the portraits are cropped out of the aforementioned gorgeous illustration, except for Jod’s, which is a photo of a black hole (presented without comment).

🫀 I always want to play with textures for TLT fics, so this time the cover is black felt over a pink gift bag with nice leather-textured pink endpapers, and the textblock paper is a gorgeous 125gsm half-cotton that bravely took everything I threw at it.

I had so much fun working on this 🥰

I've been struggling through reading books lately because of general life stuff (and mild screen addiction tbh) but I finally finished The Doors of Midnight 😭 It's the sequel to The First Binding, which I absolutely loved and really got me out of my reading slump when I found it a couple of years ago. I don't post book stuff usually here but I'll put some thoughts below because I feel like I can't find any discussion of this series online...

Okay so first off, both these books are LONG. 800 pages-ish, but for the most part it feels justified. There were a few parts toward the middle that had me itching to "get to the point", so to speak, but I was invested in the story throughout. One of the things I've really enjoyed in these books is how Ari, the main character, constantly fails or has to learn a hard lesson. It balances out perfectly the moments where he gets by on dumb luck- and the even rarer occasions where he truly manages to harness power or master skills. It builds the tension well and makes the scenes where he shows growth super satisfying to read.

Most importantly though, I feel like you can really glean the level of passion that went into this book- the descriptions of food, the way colors are worded in a unique way on every page, the parallels to real-world cultures and ideas... All of it makes for a world that feels very alive and full. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a new fantasy world to dive into.

I didn't really think about this before, but in the iconic proposal scene, twilight thinks "until my mission do us part" and yor thinks "until my killing do us part". twilights bit made sense to me bc he planned to eventually end the family, but for Yor I was kinda like "oh endo must have just needed a parallel and yor doesn't have a specific end in mind so he must've just went with 'until my killing do us part' even if it doesn't make as much sense".

but i realized that maybe by "my killing" Yor didn't necessarily mean her job killing people, but rather HERSELF being killed? like was her life prior to the forgers just doing jobs until an inevitable end? cruise arc showed us that she found her new reason (family) to keep going with garden, but before that, was she just like. waiting for the one job that'd end up killing her?
