Truthwitch by Susan Dennard (The Witchlands, #1) 🗡️👁️📜🫴🏻🧵 It's a travesty that I was unaware of this series until recently. I just finished the first book, and I'm hooked—wow. Dennard's world-building in the Witchland Series is intricate, beautiful, and, above all, magical.

Truthwitch by Susan Dennard is the first book in the Witchlands series. It is a story about two unregistered witches, Safiyah, a truthwitch, and Iseult, a threadwitch, who are on the run from various opposers, such as empires and mercenaries. Both Safi and Iseult must navigate a tense and scary political landscape. Along the way, they encounter allies and foes, including Prince Merik, a windwitch, and the bloodwitch Aeduen.

To give a little backstory, I had begun rewatching Avatar: The Last Airbender, and as with every rewatch of Avatar, my heart swooned for Zutara. Listen, the first season came out when I was 13; I fell hard for Zuko and never looked back. I also immediately questioned why he and Katara didn't end up together once the series concluded, as their chemistry and scenes were *chef's kiss* 🤌🏼. Moving on, I wanted to know if any books/series exuded similar ATLA attributes/were identical in any way. I ended up finding A Clockwork Reader's BookTube video that recommended books for fans of the Avatar: The Last Airbender series. Thus, I was introduced to the Witchlands series. 🌬️ Side note, I love that A Clockwork Reader is a shameless fan of Zutara like myself, and she mentioned how she got a chance to chat with the author, Susan Dennard, and apparently, two characters in the series were inspired by the dynamic between Katara and Zuko, which of course piqued my interest even more.

Overall, I loved this book! I haven't read a YA fantasy in a while, but it's such a good read. I'm starting book two next week; I'm swamped with homework, so I need to put that first 🙃 Also, um, I'm sorry, the phrase Aeduan said to Iseult in her native tongue quite literally tugged at my heartstrings and nearly brought me to my knees. Like-are you kidding me?! I gasped when she divulged what the phrase meant, like...that's something heartmates say to each other, not a girl you swore you'd kill the next time you'd cross paths. Lmao. They've had such minimal interactions, but I'm obsessed with them.

Newly-completed knitting project. Little baby bonnet for the nibling, done in light purple wool/cotton blend. It's not heavy so it isn't for winter, but would be good for early spring. This one gave me trouble. Or rather, the CAT made it give me trouble. He made me drop stitches SO MANY TIMES.

It seems that EoE Finn is in a field of flowers near the College, except it’s some kind of illusion or pocket dimension or smth conjured by magic? Makes me wonder for what purpose. And who’s doing it, if someone is doing it (probably Finn himself?).

He seems pretty amazed about it, too. Again makes me wonder who (if anyone) is performing this magic and why. Also makes me wonder about Evalas’s worldbuilding regarding magic, like what limits there may be.

“threads of magic”— I wonder if that’s pretty prose alone or if it means something deeper. Makes me think of Threadwitches from the witchlander series!

That sunflower line sticks out to me. Hard. LOL. For obvious reasons. Why’s he looking for a sunflower? And does it have anything to do with The Sunflower™️? I wonder if sunflowers are going to become even more symbolic-

I've been writing journal entries for EoE Finn, and I wanted to share a snippet from today. Very excited about these explorative brain teasers I've cooked up.

"Then in the next moment, I was in a vast field, with all sorts of vegetation. It wasn’t just farmland, but brilliant, beautiful flower gardens that could rival that of the gardens in the capital. Then, in the distance, glass structures containing all sorts of herbs and more fragile seedlings. Beyond that, lush trees, as if they cut out a sliver of a storybook forest and planted it beneath the College.

A sky almost identical to our own, with a sun! Clouds! Even birds! Entirely woven with the threads of magic and hung like a tapestry across the stone ceiling. To my eye, the shimmer of magic was noticeable, slightly. I imagine that anyone unfamiliar with magic wouldn’t even know the difference. The plants certainly haven’t.

I wandered for an hour, speaking with all manners of flowers. Some I recognized, others looked incredibly foreign. None could tell me where I might find a sunflower, but wished me well on my search. They may have just wanted me to continue my adventure, that I might chat with their distant friends and family across the way."

Hi quick question!! Can nomatsi only be threadwitches? Or can they have other witcheries as well? I noticed that Owl is an Earthwitch and also a Nomatsi and i got curious because i thought nomatsis were only Threadwitches.

Oh, no! There are the same range of witches in Nomatsis as everywhere else in the Witchlands.

The only thing is that Threadwitches can only be Nomatsi. Because they have a special magic. You learn a little about it in Sightwitch. And you’ll learn more in Iseult’s book. 😉

I have been crocheting for 32 years. I have been knitting for 4. I taught myself to knit. My Mama'aw taught me how to crochet. I am not a snob about it, I want to help. I know for a fact that a lot of others on here do too. Please, blow up our ask boxes, message us, mention us in a post, ask us for help, we'll happily give it!
