I also believe that in a "tech level" approach, though of course I dislike that term, trying to get blood out of the stone of pseudo-medieval settings just constrains you. There are plenty of very, very well researched guides to medieval life and technology, mostly about Europe but you will find them about the Islamic world, Eastern Asia, and so on...
but the thing is, even with well researched settings, even with very welcome switches to other historical inspirations, it's just done and tired. We are talking about fantasy, a genre that can encompass the entirety of human imagination, and people always go back to the same time period of 476-1453 like stuck in a time loop, it's maddening.
There is a lot to talk about this but let's focus on tech for a little. Do you know how ingenious bronze age technology was? Did you read about pre-columbian cities and engineering? What about something beyond the Middle Ages, the inventions of the Renaissance or Early Modernity? I think there has been quite a lot on fantasy with industrial technology but it often feels (especially in things like popular RPGs) that it's a couple of steampunk things stacked upon a medieval-inspired world. How about a world that just skips the medieval aesthetics and goes to an industrial revolution?
And since this is fantasy, you can mix and match technology and inventions. What's more, you can explore art styles and philosophies, that's more complex to reflect but very well worth it. There is simply no need to return again and again to the tired aesthetics, true, but you can also learn how technology shaped history and do something more creative about it that researching just the same time period over and over and over.
I think we're just done with castles and plate armor.

Dialogue with Gemini (33) Top 5 most traded goods in the world
Tumblr media
My question:
I hear that the most traded commodity in the world is oil, and the second is coffee. So, what are the top five traded commodities, number three, four, and five?
世界でもっとも多い交易品は石油で、二番目はコーヒーだと聞く。では、交易品3位、4位、5位のベスト5は何になるか?
Gemini’s answer:
While oil is indeed one of the most traded commodities, your information about coffee being the second most traded is not quite accurate. Here's a breakdown of the top five most traded commodities:
Crude Oil: This remains the most traded commodity globally due to its extensive use in various industries, including transportation and energy production.
Natural Gas: As a clean-burning fossil fuel, natural gas is increasingly sought after, making it a significant commodity in global trade.
Gold: A precious metal valued for its investment potential and use in jewelry, gold is a staple in commodity markets.
Silver: Another precious metal, silver is used in various industries, including electronics and photography.
Copper: A vital industrial metal used in construction, electronics, and other applications, copper is a crucial commodity in global trade.
While coffee is certainly a significant commodity, particularly in agricultural markets, it doesn't rank among the top five most traded commodities globally.
Impression:
I think I misheard somewhere. Do industrial products exceed agricultural products in volume?

Fantasy Worldbuilding Questions (Trade, Commerce, and Industry)
Trade, Commerce, and Industry Worldbuilding Questions:
What is the primary currency in this world? Does each region have its own?
What is the standard (such as the gold standard) by which currency is valued?
Who has more relative trading power and why? Which commodities are valued the most?
Who is paid the most because their labor is valued highest? Who is paid the least? Or is labor compensated equally (and do pay grades vary by region)?
Where are the biggest centers of trade and industry? Why are they in these locations?
Where are the main trading routes and what are landmarks or places of interest along their way?
When was this world most or least prosperous, and why?
When business is conducted, what are the customs, signs of trust (like signatures on Earth), formalities?
Why is a specific trade more common than others (what context underpins it)?
Why are certain trades growing or waning in popularity?

China Strikes Back
Responding to the US tariffs, China has made its move by introducing tariffs on about $22 billion worth of US goods, including agricultural commodities.
A brief analysis of losers and gainers, as always.
First, I believe China will make a significant move towards self-sufficiency in all major crops, including soybeans, corn, and wheat.
Second, let’s analyse the situation by product. In 2024, China imported a record 105.03 million metric tons of soybeans. The US supplied 22.13 million tons of these imports, while Brazil was China’s largest soybean supplier with 74.65 million tons. As mentioned above, I expect China to import more from Brazil while also increasing its local production.
Corn.  In 2024, China's corn imports experienced a significant decline, totalling approximately 13.77 million metric tons-a 49% decrease compared to the previous year. The US supplied 2 million tons of corn to China, comprising roughly 14.5% of China's total corn imports. Brazil took the lead, with China importing 6.5 million tons of Brazilian corn. Meanwhile, this presents a good opportunity for Ukraine to increase its share of Chinese imports if ceasefire talks proceed.
Wheat.  In 2024, China's wheat imports totalled approximately 11 million metric tons, reflecting a 7% decrease compared to the previous year. Australia, the US, and Canada were the main suppliers. I presume Canada may gain a greater share of the market, potentially taking over the US’s share, which amounted to 1.9 million metric tons in 2024.

we have been watching star wars skeleton crew (no one be mean to me) which is very bad (obviously), but sadly i cannot stop watching it because it has an old republic mint in it. a mint! where they made the money! i have been complaining for like a decade that the money in star wars makes no sense (a man might have his preoccupations, mightn't he) & finally, a show which has heard my exhortations & decided to ruin my life about it by being willfully fucking dumb
#IT IS SO STUPID! IT IS SO STUPID I SHALL DIE!!!!! WHY ARE OLD REPUBLIC 'CREDITS' SQUAREISH GOLD COINS THAT'S DUMB!!!!!#LIKING STAR WARS IS A CURSE!!!!!!#irredeemable whining#the best star wars money content is still ep 1 of mando show where someone says that they don't accept republic credits on the outer rim#because a) that reflects the fact that money is part & parcel of state power & b) it's a nice riff on westerns! 19th c american money WEIRD#instead of making the money somehow a stable & consistent store of value even though the coins look nothing like the money in the ot!#it makes zero fucking sense for old republic money to have avoided debasement; we watched clone wars!#the republic's debt burden was UNREAL & the government was consistently irresponsible; they would've debased coins + printed cash?#it makes no sense! there absolutely should be some kind of commodity money that's generally exchangeable in like illicit trade#and it should be minted by like. the hutts lmao. republic credits should exist on the outer rim as a currency of account#or i guess it would be very star wars to have the banking clan also make the money (& a nice nod to 19th c american money again) but um#i do not personally like thinking too hard about the banking clan because i think it usually collapses into lazy antisemitic tropes#instead of like interesting public finance/corporate influence stuff. which is what i want. in my star wars. like a fool#i'm in way too deep on this obv. anyway the show is very bad & clearly very expensive & i hate disney star wars#feel free to chime in with your star wars money thoughts!

Ea-Nasir is "back"...
Hey guys, remember the ancient Mesopotamian low-quality copper bamboozler Ea-Nasir? Guess what: he seems to be "back"...
Tumblr media
...To be fair though: This particular embezzlement crime actually happened in 2021: [mining.com] Not this year (2024).
(Using a news-link from mining dot com, because the original Bloomberg dot com article is behind a pay-wall.)
Still hillarious though, in my opinion. And the Ea Nasir joke continues to be evergreen. At least among Tumblr deep-lore enthusiasts and fans of ancient world/mediterranean/levant history.
--===--
Some more choice memes I've collected recently, related to Ea Nasir:
A reply, over from Bluesky:
Ea-nāṣir jokes are like high-quality copper ingots. Not everybody gets them.
Not mine; this next one neither:
Tumblr media
Obligatory "Palpatine is back" remix:
Tumblr media
The Simpsons predicted this, of course:
Tumblr media
---
Caught by the captains of the East India Company:
Tumblr media
---
Randal Munroe/XKCD Comics remembers Ea-Nasir, of course...
Tumblr media
The Tumblr merch shop [shop.tumblr.com] has been under maintenance and reconstruction for several months now, but the (current? former?) head of Tumblr merch still has his Tumblr blog up and has a nice quick-briefing of the Ea-Nasir meme on Tumblr....
In 1953, explorer Sir Leonard Woolley discovered and acquired the tablet from what is believed to be the ruins of Ea-Nasir's home while on an expedition to the city of Ur. Several other similar tablets complaining about poor copper quality were also recovered, suggesting Ea-Nasir frequently sent his customers poor-quality goods. The tablet is currently held at the British Museum.

A strange phenomenon was noted in July, a little noticed rise in the Aluminum MMI index. It was the first time in years that it had rose higher than the London Metal Exchange. An occurrence so curious, those observing it began to speculate if some unknowable force was at work, manipulating global aluminum prices. Aluminum had long been the lifeblood of many industries, from the automotive to electronics, and yet its prices had stayed relatively constant until that point. In the minds of those watching the market, many wondered if someone was attempting to gain control of the market, or if it was just a coincidence. As the days went by, and the Aluminum MMI continued to surpass the London Metal Exchange, the well-informed began to whisper theories amongst themselves. They debated that the prices were not the result of the market, but instead the signs of a grand plan, the work of some unknown mastermind. One thing was certain, in July, the Aluminum MMI was high, and no one quite knew why.
