Connor needs more friends and Tron lost/ destroyed all his friends, so i think they should be buddies 😤👌 they have a lot in common, they can bond over their shared trauma hahah
(the crossover came to me in November and then i shot myself in the foot by deciding to do traditional instead of digital 😂 ...and it hasn't left me alone, so there may be more still)
DBH/ Tron AU
transcript:
Connor: -nothing so far. It appears to be a library archive of ENCOM's back up files. Copies of layouts and simulations. But no location of the GRID server or current status.
Markus: Alright Connor, keep me posted. And be careful.
Connor: I will, Markus.
Connor: (A corrupted security file..? Why-)
Connor: --W A K E U P--
Connor: I'm sorry. Your updated matrix was corrupt, so I had to access your base code.
Tron: Are you a User?
Connor: My name is Connor, I'm th- I'm an android.. a detective with New Jericho.
Tron: My name is Tron. To what do I owe a super computer for the rescue?
Connor: New Jericho received an anonymous tip about the existence of ISOs in ENCOM's dormant system, and I recovered your security program during my search. Perhaps you'd be able to help me?
Tron: I cannot condone any program, or AI for that matter, actively working to harm the Users or ISOs.
Connor: That's not our intent, I promise you.
Tron: ...Very well. On one condition.
Connor: Yes?
Tron: ..I'm an old program, Connor. Would you tell me.. how the User world has changed?
Connor: (smiles)
(BONUS)
Tron: Connor! It's good to see you.
Connor: Hello, Tron.
Tron: How are you?
Connor: I'm well. I was telling my friend Hank about you and the date of your origin. And he said, “For pete's sake, kid, what'cha doin with all us old guys? Ya gotta get out more, get some sun.”
Tron: He sounds like he would have enjoyed one of MY User friends.
Connor: Maybe if he knew who you were, Hank would feel differently-

Collab Teaser Art by the lovely @tiniestcatten !
HELLO!
albeit bit late…
THE NEXT RTGAME BIRTHDAY COLLAB IS FINALLY UNDERWAY!
And we’re always looking for extra help…!
How do I join?
DM me! I specialise in giving out discord server links to our planning server, where the whole thing goes down! I might take a bit to get back to you - but I will do so as fast as I can!
Any hints on the theme?
No! As always, the inner workings of the Birthday Collab are kept inside the server until it’s released, to make the surprise worth it! It’s expected that you promise to keep your WIPs confidential until the full collab is posted - as well as the theme itself!
I can’t do digital art! Can I still join?
Of course! When needed, the organisers can scan any traditional artwork so it can be added to the collab.
We’ve also had a few people add 3D models to the collab before, so really - all mediums are welcome as long as they fit the file requirements!
TLDR again - Birthday Collab is underway - DM me for an invite if you’re interested in participating!
#rtgame#rtgame fanart#rtgame collab#hey lu shut up#aaaand we’re live#sooo excited to see this one come together ahhh#i looooved coming up with the idea it’s so fun#i hope you all like it!!!!#AGAIN massive thanks to tiny for the art it’s soooo cute i adore it

Also, thinking about Devimon and Etemon.
Etemon is referred to as the King of Digimon, as well as the World's Strongest - though that latter part comes with an explicit disclaimer that it's self-proclaimed. But it hasn't been disproven prior to the Children's arrival, so he's at least up there.
Etemon is Old Power. He has an established power structure already in place when the children arrive. He has far-reaching authority across Server, with an forces at his beck and call all over the place. And his Dark Network is fucking everywhere. He's been in a position of consolidated power for what's suggested to be a pretty long time.
Like. He's been in power for long enough to have a tradition of annual concerts.
And though he's actively pursuing the slippery little kids, he's able to threaten the Chosen Children wherever they are by ringing up whichever of his forces are garrisoned over there.
Etemon is not just the World's Strongest (allegedly). Of the three villains prior to the Dark Masters arc, Etemon is the one with the most reach and political influence.
Vamdemon, the next villain, is a recluse living in an isolated castle he seemingly bulit himself, extensively studying Chosen Children lore with no influence beyond his walls. He holds no authority over DIgimon society and relies on his two minions, PicoDevimon and Tailmon, to interact with the outside world.
And Devimon?
Devimon doesn't have shit compared to them. And he knows it. He's a bottom-feeder in the hierarchy of wickedness. But on File Island, he gets to be a dark god.
"The strongest evil Digimon!" says Agumon, who later admits he's never left File Island. He doesn't know what's out there on Server, which is where this assessment of Devimon's power is coming from.
Devimon is, knowingly and on purpose, the big fish in this small pond.
File Island was supposed to be a safe place for the Isekai'd kids to be received and properly instructed. Gennai was meant to appear to them the moment they arrived in that forest.
They had the Tags over here waiting for the Children to arrive, a whole-ass temple dedicated to Digivice lore for them to study at, and Gennai was all set to meet them.
But then bottom-feeding Devimon also found File Island and realized it'd be a great place to bunker down and build up his master plan.
The Black Gears are Devimon's great equalizer against the likes of Vamdemon and Etemon. Though he's inferior to them in power, the gears - seemingly based on his Death Claw attack, which has the same effect - are capable of enslaving the minds of even Perfect-stage Digimon.
He came out here to the distant, isolated, and lowkey in power Tutorial Island, shorted out Gennai's signal, and also found the Tags that were waiting for the Chosen Children and shoved them in a hole.
Get that shit out of here. I have gear-making to do.
Then he set to work making fucktons of Black Gears and hollowing out File Island, turning the whole place into a fleet of ships to carry his Black Gears to foreign shores.
What's really interesting about this, however, is when you stop to consider his ambitions.
What is he making this huge surplus of Black Gears for?
The other side of the ocean is Server Continent. Who, exactly, is he invading?
That. Is fascinating when you stop to think about it.
The forces of darkness are not one big happy family. We know this. Vamdemon and PicoDevimon did not give one single solitary shit about what happened to Etemon, and in fact used his death as part of their own machinations.
Devimon is a weak bottom-feeder with ambitions of being king of the world, creating tools of mind control that can enslave even Digimon far more powerful than he is. Etemon is presently King of Digimon, ruler of Server, and World's Strongest (allegedly) Perfect-stage Digimon.
And there's a very real possibility that, had the Chosen Children not gotten between them, Devimon was days away from going to war with Etemon for power, prestige, and territory.
I wonder what that would have been like? A Devimon vs. Etemon war sounds really interesting as an AU.
But then he died.
And in his final moments he was like "HAHAHA You have no idea about the guy I was doing all of this to beat and you wasted this shit on me! You're all so fucked! HAHAHA!!!"
And he was almost right.
There but for the interference of Nanomon, the Chosen Children's arrival on Server would have been three minutes of bloodsport for Etemon and then right back to ruling his kingdom, never truly understanding either of the deadly forces that were knocking at his front door.

Hypothetical Decentralised Social Media Protocol Stack
if we were to dream up the Next Social Media from first principles we face three problems. one is scaling hosting, the second is discovery/aggregation, the third is moderation.
hosting
hosting for millions of users is very very expensive. you have to have a network of datacentres around the world and mechanisms to sync the data between them. you probably use something like AWS, and they will charge you an eye-watering amount of money for it. since it's so expensive, there's no way to break even except by either charging users to access your service (which people generally hate to do) or selling ads, the ability to intrude on their attention to the highest bidder (which people also hate, and go out of their way to filter out). unless you have a lot of money to burn, this is a major barrier.
the traditional internet hosts everything on different servers, and you use addresses that point you to that server. the problem with this is that it responds poorly to sudden spikes in attention. if you self-host your blog, you can get DDOSed entirely by accident. you can use a service like cloudflare to protect you but that's $$$. you can host a blog on a service like wordpress, or a static site on a service like Github Pages or Neocities, often for free, but that broadly limits interaction to people leaving comments on your blog and doesn't have the off-the-cuff passing-thought sort of interaction that social media does.
the middle ground is forums, which used to be the primary form of social interaction before social media eclipsed them, typically running on one or a few servers with a database + frontend. these are viable enough, often they can be run with fairly minimal ads or by user subscriptions (the SomethingAwful model), but they can't scale indefinitely, and each one is a separate bubble. mastodon is a semi-return to this model, with the addition of a means to use your account on one bubble to interact with another ('federation').
the issue with everything so far is that it's an all-eggs-in-one-basket approach. you depend on the forum, instance, or service paying its bills to stay up. if it goes down, it's just gone. and database-backend models often interact poorly with the internet archive's scraping, so huge chunks won't be preserved.
scaling hosting could theoretically be solved by a model like torrents or IPFS, in which every user becomes a 'server' for all the posts they download, and you look up files using hashes of the content. if a post gets popular, it also gets better seeded! an issue with that design is archival: there is no guarantee that stuff will stay on the network, so if nobody is downloading a post, it is likely to get flushed out by newer stuff. it's like link rot, but it happens automatically.
IPFS solves this by 'pinning': you order an IPFS node (e.g. your server) not to flush a certain file so it will always be available from at least one source. they've sadly mixed this up in cryptocurrency, with 'pinning services' which will take payment in crypto to pin your data. my distaste for a technology designed around red queen races aside, I don't know how pinning costs compare to regular hosting costs.
theoretically you could build a social network on a backbone of content-based addressing. it would come with some drawbacks (posts would be immutable, unless you use some indirection to a traditional address-based hosting) but i think you could make it work (a mix of location-based addressing for low-bandwidth stuff like text, and content-based addressing for inline media). in fact, IPFS has the ability to mix in a bit of address-based lookup into its content-based approach, used for hosting blogs and the like.
as for videos - well, BitTorrent is great for distributing video files. though I don't know how well that scales to something like Youtube. you'd need a lot of hard drive space to handle the amount of Youtube that people typically watch and continue seeding it.
aggregation/discovery
the next problem is aggregation/discovery. social media sites approach this problem in various ways. early social media sites like LiveJournal had a somewhat newsgroup-like approach, you'd join a 'community' and people would post stuff to that community. this got replaced by the subscription model of sites like Twitter and Tumblr, where every user is simultaneously an author and a curator, and you subscribe to someone to see what posts they want to share.
this in turn got replaced by neural network-driven algorithms which attempt to guess what you'll want to see and show you stuff that's popular with whatever it thinks your demographic is. that's gotta go, or at least not be an intrinsic part of the social network anymore.
it would be easy enough to replicate the 'subscribe to see someone's recommended stuff' model, you just need a protocol for pointing people at stuff. (getting analytics such as like/reblog counts would be more difficult!) it would probably look similar to RSS feeds: you upload a list of suitably formatted data, and programs which speak that protocol can download it.
the problem of discovery - ways to find strangers who are interested in the same stuff you are - is more tricky. if we're trying to design this as a fully decentralised, censorship-resistant network, we face the spam problem. any means you use to broadcast 'hi, i exist and i like to talk about this thing, come interact with me' can be subverted by spammers. either you restrict yourself entirely to spreading across a network of curated recommendations, or you have to have moderation.
moderation
moderation is one of the hardest problems of social networks as they currently exist. it's both a problem of spam (the posts that users want to see getting swamped by porn bots or whatever) and legality (they're obliged to remove child porn, beheading videos and the like). the usual solution is a combination of AI shit - does the robot think this looks like a naked person - and outsourcing it to poorly paid workers in (typically) African countries, whose job is to look at reports of the most traumatic shit humans can come up with all day and confirm whether it's bad or not.
for our purposes, the hypothetical decentralised network is a protocol to help computers find stuff, not a platform. we can't control how people use it, and if we're not hosting any of the bad shit, it's not on us. but spam moderation is a problem any time that people can insert content you did not request into your feed.
possibly this is where you could have something like Mastodon instances, with their own moderation rules, but crucially, which don't host the content they aggregate. so instead of having 'an account on an instance', you have a stable address on the network, and you submit it to various directories so people can find you. by keeping each one limited in scale, it makes moderation more feasible. this is basically Reddit's model: you have topic-based hubs which people can subscribe to, and submit stuff to.
the other moderation issue is that there is no mechanism in this design to protect from mass harassment. if someone put you on the K*w*f*rms List of Degenerate Trannies To Suicidebait, there'd be fuck all you can do except refuse to receive contact from strangers. though... that's kind of already true of the internet as it stands. nobody has solved this problem.
to sum up
primarily static sites 'hosted' partly or fully on IPFS and BitTorrent
a protocol for sharing content you want to promote, similar to RSS, that you can aggregate into a 'feed'
directories you can submit posts to which handle their own moderation
no ads, nobody makes money off this
honestly, the biggest problem with all this is mostly just... getting it going in the first place. because let's be real, who but tech nerds is going to use a system that requires you to understand fuckin IPFS? until it's already up and running, this idea's got about as much hope as getting people to sign each others' GPG keys. it would have to have the sharp edges sanded down, so it's as easy to get on the Hypothetical Decentralised Social Network Protocol Stack as it is to register an account on tumblr.
but running over it like this... I don't think it's actually impossible in principle. a lot of the technical hurdles have already been solved. and that's what I want the Next Place to look like.

Network switches
What’s a network switch ?
A switch is a device used in computer networks to connect multiple devices together within a single local area network (LAN). Its main role is to facilitate communication between different connected devices, such as computers, printers, servers, IP phones, etc.
It is a mini-computer which is made up of RAM, ROM, flash RAM, NVRAM, a microprocessor, connectivity ports and even an operating system.
RAM
RAM (Random Access Memory) contains the current configuration of the switch and temporarily stores the MAC address table, which is then processed by the microprocessor.
Microprocessor
The microprocessor is the heart of the switch, responsible for data processing, including switching and creating links between multiple devices.
External memories
External memories, such as flash RAM, ROM, and NVRAM (Non-Volatile RAM), store configuration files , different versions of the IOS , etc ...
Ports
The switch ports are the communication interfaces of the switch. There are several of them, generally 24 for a Cisco switch. Each port is associated with an LED which indicates its status and activity.
How does it work ?
Now how does a switch work to transfer information from one machine to another?
Suppose we have 4 machines: A, B, C and D connected to our switch in ports 1, 2, 3 and 4 as follows:
The switch only works with MAC addresses , so basically we have an empty MAC address table stored in RAM as soon as the switch starts up which looks like this :
Transmitting data from machine A to machine B happens in the following steps:
Machine A sends a frame to machine B
Once this frame arrives at port 1 (which is the one linked to A), the switch reads the source MAC address and stores it in the MAC address table
The switch reads the destination MAC address and looks for it in the table, if it is not in the table, it broadcasts to all the active machines connected to the switch except the source one.
If the port linked to the machine we want is active, it sends a response frame from which the switch reads the MAC address we were looking for (@B)
Once done, it records the MAC address of B in the table.
This process repeats until the switch reaches what is called "MAC address table stability", that is to say it knows all the MAC addresses of the connected machines and has no more need to broadcast.
Starting and configuring a switch
When it comes to booting a switch, the process is similar to that of a traditional computer system:
POST (Power-On Self Test): The switch performs proper functioning tests on all hardware.
Loading IOS (Internetwork Operating System): The switch operating system is loaded.
Loading the configuration. At this stage we have two cases:
Either the switch already has a startup configuration defined and stored in NVRAM
Either the switch is blank and it is up to us to define the startup configuration when it goes to setup mode
Switch configuration
The configuration of a switch is done through different modes, such as user mode, privileged mode and global configuration mode, which allows access to specific configuration modes, such as interface mode, routing mode, line mode, etc.
And to do all this of course you must first connect the switch with the machine via the console cable and open a terminal emulator
💡 It should be noted that the only machine that can configure the switch is the one connected to it by a console cable, the others are only hosts.

Hopefully there are still people out there that are reading this, I feel like I've put way too much thought in it. Anyway let the Ronan and Ba'kif adventures resume.
Title: Buried in Ice
Characters: Ronan, Ba'kif and others
Chapters: 6/?
Summary: Ronan adjusts to life with the Chiss when a sudden revelation leads him to realize that his fate is not as firmly in his hands as he'd thought it was.
___
Ba’kif shifted and refocused his attention on the blank wall opposite him.
How had it come to this?
There was a dull ache in his jaw that betrayed the stormy state of his thoughts and he flexed his neck before giving up on the effort altogether.
He should have seen this coming, he really should have.
Letting his eyes roam again, he glanced at the human occupying the seat parallel to his. Lyron’s complexion remained pale and his hands twitched nervously where he’d folded them in his lap. One of the more extreme signs of alarm Ba’kif had observed in him and he filed it to the back of his mind on impulse.
If he’d thought the tension of their uncertain circumstances was taxing, then he was unprepared for the frustration their current situation incited in him. Perhaps he was losing his touch?
… He really should have seen this coming.
The café was nearing its evening lull by the time they were halfway through their drinks. Those who had opted to spend their afternoon there had thinned, making space for the patrons that would begin filing in at the end of their workday, and the servers had taken to lounging at the bar in preparation for the coming flux.
It was just the right amount of ears Ba’kif felt comfortable discussing more sensitive topics around.
He set his cup back down in its saucer and repressed a grin at another blunt remark from his companion.
Despite having most of their work-related talks in his office back in EDF headquarters, Ba’kif would still invite the human out here occasionally, under the pretext of a by now established tradition.
He would be lying if he said Lyron’s file was complete by now. No, unbeknownst or perhaps very much known to Lyron – Ba’kif had learned not to underestimate him by now – his evaluation was still very much in progress. And Ba’kif had taken note of the fact that the human felt much more comfortable in a less professional environment.
“It’s stupidly brash, is what it is,” Lyron fumed, picking his finished cup up for the umpteenth time before setting it back down, disgruntled. The dense network of veins stood out starkly against alien skin and Ba’kif found his gaze drawn to it in childlike curiosity. “How are we supposed to defend someone whose actions are indefensible?”
Ba’kif shrugged, prompting a grumbling response from Lyron.
“We don’t. Our job isn’t to conjure blamelessness where there is none. So by all means, let the Syndicure rip into them.”
“That reflects on our own reputation you know,” Lyron tacked on, sending Ba’kif on the search for a plausible defense.
The question of how genuine it should be stood at the forefront. Ba’kif elected to take a calculated risk.
“I admit,” he said at length, carefully, “there is a certain tendency among the younger generations to blunder in their approach.”
Lyron’s gaze beckoned him to elaborate. Ba’kif sighed and repositioned himself in his chair.
“There are a lot of young officers who seem to have misunderstood some of our more successful strategies. Many saw Thrawn’s success in the early days of the war and thought uncompromising hardheadedness was the way to go.”
Essentially missing the true nature behind Trawn’s genius. And only taking away the unfortunate side effects, Ba’kif finished in his head.
“You mean we work for reckless upstarts who live in a post Thrawn era and think they don’t need an ounce of political acumen.”
Ba’kif chose to forgo his answer. Lyron winced sympathetically.
“Just how deep of a scar has this man left on your society?”
“Crises come and go, Lyron,” Ba’kif waved him away. “Our society is used to weathering them without any lasting effects. We, as the Ascendancy’s servants, simply need to make sure it survives its current predicament.”
Lyron shrugged his shoulders cheerfully.
“Well, I’ll be cheering for you from the sidelines.”
The remark prompted a wry smile from Ba’kif that he opted to hide behind his cup.
From the sidelines, Lyron said. Little did he know how hard that was to believe, just looking at him. Lyron might have been loath to admit it but he was integrating into their people quicker than anyone had anticipated.
As for his opinions on Thrawn, Ba’kif had to cut Lyron some slack and admit that it was all a bit more convoluted than he could conceive of.
There was, for one, the possibility that the Syndicure’s desire to avoid another Thrawn scenario at all costs exacerbated the whole situation. This was why the Mediation Bureau had come to be to begin with. But that strategy also had its pitfalls.
On the one hand separating politics from military matters presupposed some degree of detachment and independence of one from the other. But on the other it made a larger mess when the two were forced to interact.
This effect may be less Thrawn’s doing and more a natural progression of things that they had to adapt to for the greater good.
This was a point of contention between Lyron and Ba’kif; one they’d discovered during the many times they’d discussed the topic since it was first brought up.
Lyron argued the need for earlier family separation in the navy, as early as Junior Captain, and a simultaneous obligatory education in political and state affairs, while Ba’kif preferred to let things happen more naturally. Regardless of whether Thrawn’s influence had been the inciting push that had set things in motion, the lines between the two institutions were showing signs of becoming less blurred and the Mediation Bureau had so far proven successful in being both buffer and wedge.
Ba’kif could envision it growing and expanding slowly as the new status quo settled, a subtle development that responded more to demand rather than any artificial meddling.
The Arostocra were still jumpy, even with Thrawn so far away, and a rapid reform like this could incite fear among them of losing some of their influence. Some of them were already noticing the shift Thrawn’s heroics and departure had caused in the navy and were not happy about it at all.
Ba’kif had tried to explain it to Lyron multiple times but the human merely shook his head, insisting that a strong legal framework was necessary for any experimental project’s survival and that establishing that framework while the Aristocra weren’t yet up in arms about it was crucial.
And Ba’kif, though he wouldn’t say it out loud, was secretly pleased by the opposition. Much like Thrawn, he recognized the value of different viewpoints working together and he had a good feeling that the solution to their problem would eventually be found in the middle, so long as they both worked diligently toward it.
Thrawn had warned Ba’kif that Lyron could be particularly stubborn about his opinions but could be swayed given a solid enough explanation. ‘A deference to hard facts and logic, if you will’ Thrawn had called it.
But Ba’kif suspected it had less to do with stubbornness and more with dislike, though he’d prudently chosen not to voice that opinion. Thrawn’s methods and Vanto’s apparent disloyalty (a hypocritical label on Lyron’s part, all things considered) seemed to be the source behind Lyron’s staunch antagonism and while that was a flaw that didn’t do him any favors, Ba’kif could tolerate it as long as it didn’t get in the way of his work.
So far that work had been satisfactory and promising for Lyron’s future in the Ascendancy. Despite some initial token resistance, the human didn’t seem as opposed to cooperating with him which confirmed to Ba’kif that taking him out of the navy and out of Vanto and Thrawn’s immediate proximity, had indeed been the right choice.
So, it seems, was Ba’kif’s instinct on where to direct the human’s talents. It was perhaps destiny, more than Thrawn’s machinations, that had delivered secretary Lyron to them.
The man was a valuable asset. In more ways than he probably suspected, Ba’kif mused. The place he came from, his vaunted Empire, was a form of government where the military held much more sway than it did in the Ascendancy. Lyron had been a cog in that machine and a relatively important one at that, if Thrawn was to be believed.
As such he could provide insight into how such a system operated. What loopholes were used to give the military its influence, what laws were in place to empower it. Thrawn had given them a detailed rundown of how the Empire operated but he was always more in tune with the military side of things, as was Vanto.
How and where politics came into play was still a gray area which if charted, could provide guidelines of sorts, Ba’kif thought darkly.
Lyron seemed to straddle that line between military and politics. His own commanding officer, from what Ba’kif could glean, had been a civilian.
It was a dangerous thought… a slippery slope perhaps. But if they were to survive this war, they had to loosen the Syndicure’s hold on the military. An army fettered by a slow cumbersome political administration could not hope to weather the pressure the Grysks were exerting on them forever, if much longer.
And Ba’kif was well aware of that.
“Well, I believe this is all for today.”
Lyron sighed at length, getting up and tucking his questis under his arm. “No appointments for this afternoon?”
“None, Secretary.” Ba’kif nodded.
“Good, I can peruse these at home then.”
Home.
Another smirk hidden behind Ba’kif’s cup.
“Ah, and secretary,” Ba’kif stopped him before he could walk away.
“I had one of my aides order the garments you spoke of when we last met. They should be delivered from the seamstress’s in the coming week.”
The words sent a flash of surprise over Lyron’s face, bordering on shock.
“Thank you that’s...” he stopped and fumbled for words for a moment, “Very considerate of you.”
Ba’kif smiled indulgently.
“I know your situation makes it difficult for you move about freely. That shouldn’t bar you from simple comforts.”
“Yes, thank you. General.”
In a rare show of awkwardness, Lyron excused himself and hurried out of the café, leaving Ba’kif to finish his drink.
He did so with a touch of amusement.
It seemed that the human’s combativeness left him floundering when faced with simple courtesy. The Empire apparently didn’t employ such methods to ensure the loyalty of its subjects, though admittedly neither did the Ascendancy, not normally at least.
Turning back to his tea, he eyed the dregs at the bottom of the cup and contemplated dragging his stay out a bit longer. There were few opportunities for rest these days. The Syndicure and the Grysks made sure of it.
Something wouldn’t leave his mind, though, no matter how hard he swatted at it.
It was something Lyron had said. Something about a gift…
Now, the gift itself wasn’t unusual. Lyron had received various gifts and trinkets from Aristocra who were happy with how their family members’ cases were handled. Ingratiation was the oldest trick in the book and it spoke volumes of how ingrained it was if his people were ready to set aside their xenophobia for an inch of political leverage.
No, that part wasn’t unusual.
What was unusual though was that the gift was apparently anonymous.
No politician would make a moot move like that, Ba’kif reasoned, frowning at his cup, there was no point in an anonymous gift if your only purpose was to curry favor. His staff, of course, kept tabs on who gave his employees gifts, it was always prudent to keep track of whose good side they were on, no matter how distastefully close the whole thing came to politicking, but he wondered what the anonymous part meant.
Had it been noted? Had it gone undetected? Had it reached Lyron via alternative channels? Normally these things would be reported to him, eventually, and he trusted his men to handle the situation… But what if it had slipped his men’s radar and gone uninvestigated?
He tried to set the thought aside as neurotic but it persisted and the itch only seemed to grow the longer he let it ferment. In the end it bothered him enough to cause him to drop the idea of rest and make his way out of the café, setting a brisk pace in the direction of the EDF’s housing blocks.
Paranoid, part of him chided but he reasoned that a paranoid thought was only such until it proved to be intuition.
Making a sharp turn at the corner of the square, he ignored the stares of passersby and found the nearest entrance to the sprawling building complex carved into the stone. The apartment was easy enough to find – he’d never been there himself but the number had been committed to memory. Few of the people they monitored were accommodated in their own branch’s housing district after all.
He rapped his knuckles on the hatch once then twice and was dismayed to receive only silence in response.
It pushed him into taking measures he really wasn’t looking forward to and he dug into his jacket reluctantly, pulling out an access card and swiping it against the hatch’s controls.
A breach of trust that would set them back weeks, maybe months.
But they would cross that bridge when they got to it, he told himself and took a step into the moderately sized suite.
The place was sparsely furnished, a far cry from the gaudy administrative flats, and there was little that spoke of Lyron’s presence beside the scarf draped next to the hatch. A dresser took up most of the adjacent room’s wall, a few embroidered sleeves peeking out with a glimpse of neatly-pressed white fabric in between.
Ba’kif’s attention immediately went to the bottle sitting innocuously on the living room coffee table, however.
Closer inspection revealed that it indeed bore no inscription just as a voice sounded behind him.
“General?”
He turned to see Lyron at the threshold to what seemed like the apartment’s fresher.
“Where did this come from?” Ba’kif asked brusquely, forgoing all formalities.
He watched as Lyron’s confusion spilled out on his face, his eyes making a few meaningful trips between the open hatch and Ba’kif’s presence.
“Like I said, it was dropped off at the office this morning,” he tried hesitantly.
“Do you have any idea as to who might be the sender?”
“We had a busy month. Many cases.”
The words pressed Ba’kif’s lips into a thin line.
In hindsight, he would be grateful for giving in to his paranoia, he reflected later as they sat in tense silence, awaiting the results of the secondary analysis.
As if on cue, the questis on the table in front of them let out a soft ping and Ba’kif’s hand shot out to grab it. One good thing about being a general was that your priority requests were actually prioritized though that thought would quickly sour as he perused the message grimly and turned towards Lyron with a single word.
“Lethal,” he all but growled and watched the last of the color drain from Lyron’s face.
It was official then, Ba’kif concluded wryly as he set the device back down with a sigh, shooting a glance at the nauseous-looking human at his side.
He was once again fighting a war on two fronts.

Major Update! Chapter Four Release
The long-promised update is complete! As mentioned in earlier posts, I’ve rewritten some of the earlier chapters. The previous prologue and chapters 1-2 is now chapters 1-3 (no prologue). You’ll have to restart the game from the beginning due to some changes in the startup file.
You can check out the game here: https://dashingdon.com/play/kalouco/in-the-cards/mygame/
Details of what’s been updated under the cut!
ETA: a lot of people have been running across errors due to the servers taking a while to refresh. If this happens to you too, my apologies! Hopefully the issues will resolve by themselves soon, but if not, please send me a message!
Edit 2: the server-related issues should be resolved now. Hope you guys enjoy the update!
Detailed summary of updates:
Deleted the prologue, started chapter one earlier, and split the former chapter one into two so it's not overly long. (About 5k words of new content at the beginning with more interaction with your family.)
Added a new chapter (22k words total). (Only one. It just looks like more because of the aforementioned rewrites.)
Renamed PC's hometown; it's now called Blackthorn.
Renamed the Beyond to the Otherworld.
Gave a bit more flavor to the setting. Put in a mention of local dishes (based on traditional Irish cooking) and the autumn festival from chapter 2 (now chapter 3) is now called Autumnsmeet, with a bit of ritual inspired by the Celtic celebration for the beginning of harvest, Lúnasa.
Made tweaks to how psychic "magic" is referred to; rather than "castings," they're now called spells or sigils.
Added a variable, "suitaffinity," to the startup. It was already present in the Stats page, but I wanted to use it a bit more in the game itself. You can see an example of this playing out in the new chapter, where there's a spot the PC can have a difference response based on which suit(s) they have the most affinity with (Cups, Pentacles, Swords, or Wands). This part is a bit more experimental, so let me know what you think.

SWORDTEMBER '24, DAY 7: FLOW
{Late because I got a terrible migraine out of the blue yesterday. Very happy with this one, and it references not only one of my main OCs, but the overarching plot of one of my original stories. Please enjoy!} -----
Item ID: 6O-2407 Item Name: Timekeeper’s Cutlass Category: ERROR://CLASSIFICATION INVALID://MANUAL USER INPUT: ARTIFACT Origin Point: Time Immemorial, Voided Owner: ■■■ ■■■■■■■■ (C), Triampheus ■■■■■■■■ (O) Description: A blade of a traditional Earthen design, reminiscent of the age of pirates. Approximately ■■ cm length, with a ■■ cm handle, ■■ cm at the widest point. Samples taken from the blade, hilt, and the guard overloaded the analysis unit. Scans were inconclusive upon repeated testing. Visual assessment indicates the item is most likely made from seaglass and driftwood. In place of a central fuller, there is a hollow middle filled with grains of sand, endlessly shifting from one end to the other, chased by a slow moving strand of water. An hourglass is carved into the bottom of the hilt. If alone with the item, one will hear the sound of rushing water (this sound is not picked up by any recording devices). Touching the item with bare skin induces hallucinations based on whoever previously touched it, regardless of whether or not one has met the previous individual. Cataloger’s Notes: I’m not bothering with any pretenses today. Truth of the matter is that we never should have gotten hold of this, I want nothing to do with it, and nobody is ever going to read this file other than myself (and even then, it will only be as a reminder to myself). As soon as I’m done recording these notes, this item is getting handed off to people far more qualified than myself. Every other record of this item will be wiped from FPA systems, even the backup servers. Nobody needs to know we had our hands on an artifact of this importance… nor do they need to know we unwittingly used it. May the Ancients forgive my sins, and the sins of my partner. We did not know. ERROR://FILE NOT UPLOADED TO PRIMARY SERVER://ERROR://PLEASE SYNC LOCAL FILES WITH CLOUD://ERROR://FILE SYNC CANCELED BY USER C.DELA://
-----
Cynthia should have known better. By now, she’s catalogued over a thousand items in the span of a decade, from weapons to ancient art, from contraband pharmaceuticals to exotic pets. On three occasions she has encountered items known as artifacts: Relics, both old and new, infused with terrible power. Each one has only briefly been held by the FPA, before being swiftly taken to those with higher authority. But even a minute in the presence of an artifact can change one’s life.
The Timekeeper’s Cutlass is not as obvious of an artifact as most. Whoever tried to mail it must not have known what it was, and those who handled it in between must have worn gloves. As soon as Cynthia was alone with the item, she felt its power, and heard the sea-song in the air. She knew, then, what thing lay on her desk. It was the first time she had ever been this close to an artifact, and her heart raced at the prospect of cataloging such a find. Who could blame her?
She did not forsake her duties, did not set out to play with it. Immediately, she made the proper phone calls, arranged the item’s retrieval first. Only then did she set out to log the details, knowing sooner or later Naomi would be stopping by to take her out for dinner. That was her excuse, maybe, that she’d only work until being interrupted. A foolish thought.
Artifacts set the time of all who touch them.
It only takes a single touch of her bare skin against the seaglass to “activate” the item. An accidental brush of her wrist against the material, a microsecond of contact, and Cynthia is no longer in her office. Now she is falling, falling, flying until she is in another body entirely, seeing through another’s eyes. Feeling what they feel. Voices whisper in her ears, overlapping until one word becomes clear: Triampheus. A Goddess, for one, but a common enough name among worshippers. Once the voices cut off, suddenly, Cynthia is free to witness glimpses into the life of another.
There is war. Long did it brew, across countless planets, at last stirred up by the atrocities of a few madmen. Flashes of combat, of death, a mentor laid to rest when a truce is broken. Rage. Sorrow. Desperation in the hearts of the viewpoint. It has to end. They will end it. Threats are made, are ignored, a display of power is taken too far. An entire planet held between their hands. One last warning, time for innocents to evacuate. Finally they are taken seriously.
But their control is not strong enough. They never wanted it to end this way. Blood from their eyes, their nose, their ears. Too much power- a Goddess channeled in mortal flesh. Either they break or the planet does, there is no letting go. The choice is made for them… and an entire world collapses in on itself. There is no more war, not anymore.
There is only a manhunt.
“Cynthia, please, please wake up,” Naomi’s voice cuts through the end of the vision, breaks away from what might be the future, draws her back into her body. Instantly she’s all but throwing herself into her girlfriend’s arms, pressing her face against Naomi’s neck and sobbing. There are no words to describe what she has seen.
“Don’t- don’t touch the sword,” Cynthia chokes out between sobs. For a moment there’s no sound other than her crying, Naomi going stiff. Was it too early in their relationship for this level of intensity? A few months was hardly enough time for Naomi to grow accustomed to the sort of things Cynthia has to inspect, but surely- her anxious thoughts are cut off by a gentle kiss to the forehead.
“I… I touched it. And I think- I hope- that we didn’t see the same thing. Because I… I really liked what I saw,” Naomi admits, in a reassuring whisper. One hand rubs gentle circles into Cynthia’s back as they sit together, and soon enough the crying slows, then stops. Finally, the archivist pulls back just far enough to look up with questioning eyes. Her curiosity overwhelms. “Telling you what I saw… I’m worried that it might change things. If… if that is the future. So, please, let me say no more than that there will be boundless joy. You will be safe, and happy, and you won’t be alone.”
Nothing could fully soothe Cynthia, not yet, but the words bring her a sense of hope. She may have dreamed of a stranger’s war, but Naomi had dreamed of the life that would come after. A life that would be shared with her.

Can you tell us a little bit more about "Who, me?" ?
Thanks for the ask! :D This is one of the ficlets I wrote for a W*B server workshop prompt and then totally forgot about it until I came across the file a couple of days ago, oops. It's also from my very id-driven symbiotic-vampire!AU—but like, the 'Upgrades' aren't vampires in the traditional sense, or even supernatural at all. And in this snippet, Waxer and Boil are not, in fact, talking about sex 😂:
Throat bobbing, Waxer nods faintly. "Yeah, but... we're not in the field. And if I need some bacta, medbay isn't far." Nibbling ever so gently, Boil teases, "You'd risk the medics getting upset with you for ignoring their advice?" Waxer chuckles breathlessly, skimming his hands up and down Boil's back. "I'm not the only one involved," he says, a grin in his voice. "You'd get in trouble, too." "Mmmm," Boil hums noncommittally. "But I've got the very good excuse of my Upgrade instincts kicking in."
Thanks again!!

Once upon a day, in some distant AU, Light and L have swapped bodies. What happens next?
I have so many questions. What caused them to swap bodies? Do they know what the cause is? Do they know how long they're going to be like that? At what point in canon are we in? Or is this like a soulmate "You bodies once a year until you find them" thing? I NEED CONTEXT—
Guh. Okay. So, assuming that it happened at some point during canon, and that they already know each other, a few things could happen.
L wakes up in Light's body. Already off to a weird start, because L rarely ever sleeps and even when he does it's typically not in a bed. Plus L feels—rested?? He doesn't ache anywhere?? He recognizes Light's bedroom, of course, and after that it wouldn't take him long to adjust and believe. "This is happening now."
HOWEVER due to my own personal headcanons this means that L can now see Ryuk. L is now the owner of the Death Note even if he doesn't know where it is or even what it is. Ryuk, being a Shinigami, sees that Light's name has changed and is aware of the swap immediately, so he doesn't spill shit to L, even as he makes cryptic jokes and drops a few no-context hints. So L now has knowledge of Ryuk, but with no way to prove his existence to other people. L, of course, after seeing Ryuk begins a thorough snooping of Light's room. He rifles through all his stuff, sprays all his colognes, peruses his closet and knickknacks, and yes—spends a very long time running his hands all over and ogling Light's naked body. For The Case™.
Then L leaves to go to the Task Force building, and doesn't really,,,bother to explain himself to Sayu or Sachiko beyond "I seem to have found myself in Light-kun's body. No I can't tell you who I am it's an international secret. Good day." He is dressed in Light's brightest colored sweater (a Christmas one he found at the back of Light's closet), and sweatpants. Sayu thinks her brother has had a mental breakdown. Sachiko believes him almost immediately.
Light wakes up in L's body. He's curled up on a couch fetal position, still in jeans and a sweater, and everything hurts. Light never falls asleep with his day clothes on, never falls asleep on the couch, and since he picked up the Death Note, he's never woken up without Ryuk immediately greeting him/hovering over him/prodding for apples. It doesn't take him long to figure it out either, especially considering L's unique appearance. Light rolls with denial for about five minutes before he abruptly compartmentalizes and decides to use this as a chance to go through all of L's computer files on him. And maybe accidentally delete a few. Light also copies down a lot of L's files and contacts and servers onto a flashdrive and hides it somewhere he can bribe Ryuk to come pick up later. No cameras in L's room, right? He might as well take advantage.
Light, however, cannot hide the fact that he's not L from Watari, who caught on as soon as he asked L what he'd like for breakfast and the reply was an orange. Watari clocked him immediately as an imposter and Light was forced to 'sheepishly' and 'disbelievingly' admit the truth of his identity. "L never asks for fruit unless I put it in front of him." "I was trying to ask for something sweet that I could actually stomach, Watari-san. Now that you know who I am could you please fix me a traditional breakfast? I feel nauseous."
Watari JUMPS at the chance to finally feed L('s body) properly after all these years of struggle 🙏
Light quickly discovers that L's body is highly sensitive to certain sounds and textures, as well as persistently uncomfortable sitting still in any other position than the one L's normally sits in. Of course Light bares with it and sits normally anyway, because like hell he's caving to L's (body's) whims. Plus Light's sure now that the reason L's body aches so much is that he's constantly twisting it into weird position to appease his own jitteriness and mental discomfort. Light has far more practice with ignoring those things, don't you know 😌
Then Light's own body rolls up to the Task Force building in the ugliest ass sweater, sweatpants, and house slippers, and Light knows immediately who it is. L's even got his head tucked in like a turtle to minimize sound input like Light has trained himself out of dammit, he's giving Light's body a crick in the neck!! And he's touching him, ugh!!! L get your hands out from under that sweater Light will sue!
From there, Light and L have to tell the rest of the Task Force what happened, and Soichiro is subsequently as offended as Light by L feeling up his son's body from inside it, while Matsuda is mentally flailing over how much L acting like a normal person (acting like Light) makes him more attractive 😳🫣 How did they never notice that L is actually good-looking??
L would then try to expose Ryuk's presence, which would make Light very alarmed, but it wouldn't work very well.
"Light-kun did you know your body seems to be haunted by a large, unattractive crow creature?"
"Huh? You must be seeing things, Ryuzaki, I've never seen anything like that. How scary. Are you sure it isn't haunting you?"
And many other shenanigans!! :D

My thoughts this morning have been gravitating toward my weirdly detailed Dragon Age modern au, and how Nerio can fit into it.
Just like in Thedas, they were born and raised in a very rural small town, where most of the people work on farms and agriculture. A place rife with deeply religious, conservative and bigoted beliefs.
It was in their later teenage years that Nerio realized they were not the cis hetero son their parents wanted. They tried to keep it a secret, but many of their school peers could already tell. It was only a matter of time before their family found out.
In Thedas, Nerio rejected an arranged marriage. This set off a chain reaction that got them violently kicked out of their home. In the modern au, Nerio was instead caught (having sex) with their first boyfriend. The end result is the same, with them being treated horribly and removed from the home they grew up in.
Fortunately, this au has no Tevinter slavers to prey upon a young person with no home or support system. Instead, Nerio only spent a short time homeless on the street before they were found by Isabela and her wife Merrill while they were driving through the area. The two of them own an antique shop/small bookstore in the city not far from Nerio's town. They were in the area to find some things for the shop, but had also been alerted to Nerio's story.
Isabela and Merrill have connections to several charities, and were more than happy to take Nerio into their home for a short time, so the kid could get on their feet. To Nerio's surprise, they learn that Isabela funds this charity work with money from her old friend Sarah Hawke. The famous surgeon whose real life inspired an extremely popular medical drama tv show. Nerio's family watched every episode.
Nerio spends some time living with Isabela and Merrill, adjusting to life in the city. They get a job as a server at a restaurant, and use the money to get a phone, some new clothes, etc. With Isabela's encouragement, now that they are far from the bigotry and hatred of home, they start to come to terms with their identity and figure out who they really want to be. This is when they first buy makeup and beauty products, and dress in clothes both masculine and feminine. The farmboy slowly disappears as Nerio transforms into the person they want to see in the mirror. Merill is the first one to point out how much happier they look.
Of course, they can't stay with Isabela and Merrill forever. They need a place of their own. Fortunately, Isabela knows of a down-on-her-luck lady in desperate need of a roommate in order to keep the rent paid. Neve Gallus is a private investigator who has had a long streak of bad luck with jobs lately, and is on the verge of being evicted from her small apartment. She wouldn't normally take a roommate, but her situation is bad enough that she recognizes it's the smart thing to do. So Nerio moves in with her.
At first, the two of them stay out of each other's way. Nerio devotes more of their free time online, setting up accounts on tiktok and twitch, where they supplement their restaurant money with creating makeup tutorials/shopping hauls/get ready videos, talking about their life and experiences, and sometimes streaming games. These online ventures slowly earn them enough money to quit the server job and devote all of their time to being an influencer/streamer.
But slowly, Nerio shows interest in Neve's work. They offer to volunteer when they have free time, maybe to drive her around, or just help look over notes and files she might need. Neve reluctantly accepts the help, and the two bond. They spend more and more time together, doing good work, and even boosting Neve's business quite a lot. They start a tradition of celebrating good deeds and successful cases by buying a bottle of wine and sharing it at their apartment. Of course, this connection deepens, and soon, they don't need the wine as an excuse to get closer to one another, and they mutually decide to celebrate their success one evening in bed together.
And... that's as far as I've gotten. I don't know how Lucanis will fit into this, but I really want him to. He's definitely still rich in this au, part of a fabulously wealthy family from Italy. Instead of an assassin, maybe he's former military or special forces. Right now the only way I can see him meeting Nerio and Neve is if he hires them for a job, maybe investigating his cousin?
#i've never been sure if this AU is human-only or simply thedas with a modern aesthetic#i'm leaning human-only right now

So the LU gundam AU continues and

Wind and Twilight the only non clone children of the Chain! Bow I've shared some details from the LU Whumpever server, so I shall make a separate post for those details, BTW I just realized I forgot to mention Four on the server.
But, back to Wind and Twilight. Wind is a regular person (for now) but he's a space pirate. At first I was going for something like Mobile Suit Crossbone Gundam, but my ass is so unfamiliar with it, so I'm leaning more into the Gundam Astray story. So for Time's finally fight with the government, before he goes into the Fierce Deity equivalent of a Gundam (maybe I'll draw it later) to fight Skull kid/Majora (spoilers: Skull kid dies). With Legend's creation, which only happen because they found the arm of Time's original Gundam. So for Wind, he found the rest of the mobile suit. And because of certain details, aka the Time travel ability of the Ocarina of Time, the time ability goes to Wind to be the Phantom Sword (Lol I might call Wind's Gundam the Phantom Gundam). But for Wind's windwaker, that's where Wild comes in. Now it was very easy for me to say Wild and his team/Champions were abandoned to die but bot the state of the mobile suits. Now the Champions are dead, because it was a suicide mission. And for Wind's replacement arm for the Phantom Gundam, is Revali's mobile suites arm because fuck yeah Gundam Astray Gold frame with the Blitz arm. And with Wind basically not repainting the suit for some time that's how the Governemnt knew Time was alive and just deserted the army, so Time is considered a traitor to the government.
Which leads me to Twilight. Twilight is Time and Malon's son. (uh I forgot the two people that are Twilight's adopted parents in some people's fics so they're babysitters/godparents for Twilight because I feel bad for leaving them out) The Fierce Deity mobile suit was repurposed for Twilight's mobile suit, much to Time's argument against mobile suits because killing Skull kid and reading his older brother figure file of him dying in mobile suits still haunts him. (Hehehe Warriors isn't actually dead but hehhehhehe that makes the reunion more angsty along with the HADES system, ill probably rename it to SPIRIT or FOCUS if i figure out a way to make the system based off the HADES with those letters.) Twilight is a rebellious kid. Gotta keep the Gundam tradition alive by having children in Mobile suits fighting in a war they have no idea about. Also I'm going to have more than just Witch from Mercury reference be stuck to Time, I'm going to let baby Twilight sneak out and bond with the Gundam. And have Twilight get his markings from the suit too. But I'm going to let the suit transform into a wolf so I can have wolfie without any potential animal deaths in the future in case I want more angst. So because Time is a deserter, Twilight had to move around a lot and staying in Ordon for the longest time was his norm until, he meets Midna. A mobile suit designer, (well I can make her like the daughter of a mobile suit company which I guess can consider her a princess in some way) Midna helps with the Wolf Gundam (because it's no longer the Fierce Deity) and when she has to leave, their location is pretty much compromised. Which eventually leads to Twilight and Time going to space and meeting the rest of the chain, aka Twilight's uncles and Wind.
BTW designs are not final!
