ok I know industrial action has its purposes and whatnot, but it is very annoying when you physically cannot drive, ubers are too expensive and your only option is to get around via public transit and you have no idea if you will be able to catch the train next week to the airport so you can visit family because the train might be delayed for 5 hours
And you don't want to go down with your parents because then you'll he sitting in check-in for 6 hours
I don't mind being disabled until I suddenly have no way to get places.
Really hope this gets resolved soon

The first social worker I met on this job, who was also probably the first social worker I’ve ever met in general, was a man. I’ve met a lot of social workers since then, but I don’t think I’ve met or even emailed any other male social workers so far at all. Apparently the field is 85% women.

today might be the day i've been the most uncomfortable and upset at treatment from the trainees, even tho it's not even by far the worst stuff they've said
a man was cutting me off and acting in an accusatory fashion because i was acting tired and "your eyes look droopy". Which, people sometimes question my tired demeanor, but not usually so insultingly and aggressively. And then in the notes after, he said if he was in charge, he would have ordered a urinary test for drugs or medication by the end of the day. Based on meeting me for 15 minutes. And because I was tired at 8:30 in the morning.
Like. Not even close to the most egregious shit someone has said to me in character. But to have him in the debrief be even LESS compassionate and more suspicious of my "abnormalities", even taking into account that I got annoyed at him for asking. Like I'm playing a traumatized person for the scenario. And I, the actor, have many different disabilities related around fatigue. So the fact that he wasn't even listening to me, and couldn't FATHOM any reason why the human being in front of him would be tired and a little slow in the morning.
And then even after explaining that, another woman noted that I had both a coffee cup and a water bottle, and was suspicious as to why I had both, or why I coughed a couple times. And that made me mad enough to log off. I left for lunch after reminding them that the actress in front of them was obviously also a human being with needs, who had been having interviews for almost an hour straight. So I just needed water. Like not everything that someone in CPS does is suspicious!!!!!!
And it's hard, normally I wouldn't log off bc I was mad. But like. I just simply couldn't take it anymore. Like the disrespect of me, the actress, as a person, was so gross. And the inherent suspicion that someone who is tired or speaking slowly or drinking different beverages MUST be hiding something Bad is just. Blech. Usually the interviewers aren't like this but it just felt very ableist and personally dehumanizing

Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery where people profit from the exploitation of others.
obviously these are extreme and horrific situations but do you know how much of this training is like 'this is illegal" and then describes something that almost already exists under late-stage capitalism

Look at these gay pieces of paper in one of the training modules I have to do for my new job.
They kept showing up on different slides. At one point they had a third whom they were both embracing.

When I was younger, my 10 year old brother had anger issues because we were being abused at home. Child Safety got called, and instead of doing ANYTHING to help, they told my mum to CALL THE POLICE on him the next time he had an outburst.
For context, there are roughly 40 children aged 10-13 in prisons on any given night in Australia. Roughly 20 of those children are in Queensland, our state. Far too many of them are Aboriginal.
More context: we are Aboriginal.
Thankfully, my mum had the common sense not to call the cops on her own son. And I found out that offering to take him on walks when he got angry helped him calm down.
Now he's about to graduate highschool - smarter, calmer, and more mature than me, with more academic awards than I could count. I am so, so proud of him.
I'm also horrified by what he could have gone through if mum had taken Child Safety's advice.
Oh, and guess what? This year, the Queensland Police abolished their First Nations advisory group after they wouldn't sign an NDA. I heard they're trying to replace them with people who WILL sign the NDA. Fuck the police.

Our local newspaper ran a story about the legendary graffiti artist who recently passed away and. Literally everything about it is fucking insane. I'm insane about it.
So this guy has been extremely active for around fifteen years, during which he spread these beautiful, high quality pieces all over the country, way over a thousand of his standard signature, and probably thousands more. He did completely batshit stuff like literally spray painting an entire train from top to bottom or leaving his signature at the top of a 600ft tall overpass and this whole time, only five people from his crew know who he really is. To everyone else it's a complete mystery.
And then he dies at the age of 35. A few weeks after his death, his crew shows up at his completely unassuming parents' doorstep, reveals who they are and asks if they can host a memorial exhibition of his art.
Turns out, this dude has been leading an insane double life. In the daytime he was a meek little office worker with a partially paralyzed arm and no social life to speak of. In the nighttime he was a fucking legend. Not only did he climb that fucking 600ft overpass, he did it WITH A PHYSICAL DISABILITY. THE MADLAD. And throughout the entire time, fifteen years, he got caught once. ONCE. HE DID ALL THAT UNNOTICED. THAT'S INSANE.

Ok so, I just remembered how people in the comments of a tiktok video were being assholes, and I want to rant now :3
The video showed two wheelchair users at a train(?), who had just arrived to their stop to find nobody was there with a ramp so they could leave the train. One of them blocked the door so it wouldn't close, and this lasted for 15 minutes. The train was stopped for said 15 minutes. There was a button by the door, that said that it'd contact the driver when pressed. It didn't. People offered to go find the driver, and they came back with the news that there were no people in the platform to put the ramp. In the end, passengers had to go out, and place the ramp themselves, before the train could carry on. The wheelchair users had warned they were coming, and asked to have the ramp put there so they could get down. The platform turned out to have workers, they all just ran away because they'd never encountered the situation in which they needed to do this simple task.
Because of the workers' negligence, the train was forced to stop for 15 minutes.
Everyone's comments?
"Why did they block the doors and stop the train? So selfish" Selfish were workers who refused to do their job.
"What if someone had needed to get to their stop urgently? They shouldn't have stopped the train" It wasn't the disabled people's fault, it was the workers who were negligent.
"Why didn't they just wheel themselves down those steps?" They shouldn't have to risk their (expensive) chairs just because people didn't do what they were paid to do.
"If I had been in that train I would've been pissed, how dare you stop it" And you probably wouldn't have even thought about fixing the problem yourself, would you?
"Entitled assholes" Ok I'll leave you stranded in a train with everyone who could help you get down outright refusing to. Let's see who's an entitled asshole now.
If someone fights for accessibility, as much as it might be a bother for you, you do not have the right to be mad at them. If someone fights for accessibility, it is exclusively the fault of a world catered exclusively for able-bodied people.
So next time you think, "hey the consequences of these disabled people fighting for their rights bother me", instead of blaming them for this, help them solve the issue. This way, next time they will not have to fight at all.
Able bodied people, go out and fight for a fucking accessible world if you're not an asshole.
[ Able-bodied people are encouraged to reblog this post, but try not to derail ]

People: Cats are willful, independent creatures that cannot be trained
My cats (dearly departed orange idiot and teenage daughter): Sit on command, know not to fight to be let down when carried, daughter has passable leash manners, know full well they’re not allowed on the table (even if daughter doesn’t always stay off it — 90% of the time she gets up there it’s for attention, so she knows what she’s doing)
Look, the problem isn’t untrainable cats, the problem is lazy/untrainable cat owners.

and if you’d like more evidence, (with the related anti-capitalist rant about corporatization of hospitals aside/deeply ingrained to this specific evidence) look no farther than corporate creating bullshit titles that Mean Nothing so that they can put an entire job description through nine circles of hell and 6 months of approval before they even post the job for people to apply. Under a guise of ‘We’re doing this for you!’
We are Always Understaffed if you’re staff and Never Hiring bc corporate decides who, when, and why to hire
Bc god forbid u hire a secretary to replace the one who retired and left the other one alone when we should have three. No, of course, Mr.Moneyballsack we should have a singular ‘Lab Coordinator’ instead who can maybe help in the office sometimes but is also going to oversee phlebotomy and micro and cytology and blood bank and the OR schedule and needs to be a certified pathologists assistant just in case. Yeah no our 75 y/o secretary who u have in a chokehold kept from quitting bc of her insurance needs really wants that instead of two normal secretaries. She wants you to sacrifice her wellbeing so that you save so much money. You’ll save so much money. You will. If the Cost is not Money it does not Count.
No no of course if they lose the cytotech upstairs (who they are underpaying w a lab assistant rate, bc the job post ‘said’ lab assistant) u should definitely evaluate if they even need the position at all! You should probably just get rid of that position actually. The supervisor enjoys talking to others too much and that keeps her from being Efficient, which deduces our imaginary profit predictions by 4%. Of course, we’d never say that. Instead we always approve PTO, you guys just don’t finish your work. The reasonable amount of work that we give you. Why aren’t you taking PTO? Someone else can learn your medical job how hard is it? Internally of course. We can NOT hire anybody new right now. Training is so hard :(
No definitely. Boss lady. Hand me, then, your part time lab assistant, the entire secretary training packet to “see how much I can learn” in my 4 hours present per day. That’s 76$. And give me deadlines to learn it by so that I do it in a week or two. That’s 760$. Just in case Secretary burns out again and is absent for a couple days! We wouldn’t want our big partner companies to know that we don’t have backup! That was -504$! Terrible Incident that. Before we ‘trained’ you of course. Should her Discrepancy of the Mind happen again and you are Perfect (required) it will only be -276$. See. Profit. From last time. Less loss. Could look at it as +228? To you? Do you want to work Extra Hours? We will give You. Chosen One. 456$ for the same time and job 🤗. 48 dollar profit 🤫 no benefits! You’re a part time worker. That’s what you signed up for.
I don’t even go down to the lab anymore btw. Bc they will Not hire a full time person to put anywhere unless that person signs up for 3 other embedded jobs at the same time and says workflow with a straight face. After the job description is approved of course.
At Hospital. Brought to you by Corporate. where Profit Saves Lives!!!!
We said saves lives. We said nothing of livelihood. You must not be able to read. Therefore we were unable to proceed with your application at this time. If you don’t hear from us in more than 30 days, assume we have moved on to other candidates that are a better fit for our institution.
Hot Take:
There is no labor shortage. There is no shortage of people who want / are able to work and either possess useful knowledge and skills or are willing to learn them.
What there IS a shortage of is business owners that are willing to spend resources on training, safety, benefits, PTO, proper staffing levels, and fair compensation.

People might be less hostile to walkable city planning/better public transport discussions if they weren't wrapped up in anti-car rhetoric.
Quit shooting yourself in the foot.

New episode is out! We discuss the ongoing division between members and the leadership's endorsement of Biden, the East Palestine railway disaster one year after, the establishment's view of the poor and disabled classes, and a growing trend of states buying medical debt. Enjoy!
