The "correction" makes zero sense to me, given it is Veronica misidentifying a name, and makes some sense in transposing the first sound for the first and last names. Maybe they decided alluding to a "huck", as in huckster, was not quite right? He is not even a character in the story.

“William Morris Gallery Exhibition Space & Garden”, Walthamstow, London, UK _ Student: Toby Jost / BA2 _ 10.12.2024

BA 2nd-year students are introduced to the importance of weaving a new architecture within a historic listed building. The main objectives of the design are to re-design the area of the site and to integrate internal and external exhibition spaces and an extended café into a part of the whole area. Both objectives are equal in weight, i.e. “enclosed architecture” does not take precedence over the “external” architecture. The internal exhibition areas should enhance the existing use of the gallery by incorporating an energetic space not exceeding 300 square metres in total. Also, extending the existing café and creating additional kiosks that respond to the needs of the community and promote aspects of the existing landscape as recreational and contemplative spaces. The operations and results are geared to help students develop a basic working method around the ideas of transformation, transposition and displacement of specific elements or/and methodologies into new contexts, providing novel meanings and solutions to the city fabric.

Ulnar nerve instability: understanding and relieving elbow problems

- What is ulnar nerve instability? A simple explanation of the phenomenon: the ulnar nerve comes out of its bony canal during elbow movements.

- Why is it important? The consequences on daily life (pain, numbness, weakness).

- Who is affected? Risk factors (sporting and professional activities, trauma).

The symptoms

- Pain: location, type of pain (burning, tingling), aggravating factors.

- Numbness and tingling : In the ring finger and little finger.

- Muscle weakness: Difficulty gripping objects.

- Sensation of electric discharge: When moving the elbow.

The causes

- Anatomy of the elbow: Explanation of the course of the ulnar nerve and its bony canal.

- Risk factors: Trauma, repetitive activities, anatomical abnormalities.

Diagnosis

- Clinical examination: Manoeuvres causing symptoms, Tinel test.

- Complementary examinations: Electromyogram, MRI.

Treatment

- Conservative treatment: Rest, ice, anti-inflammatories, splints.

- Infiltrative treatments: Corticosteroids.

- Surgery: Transposition of the ulnar nerve (various techniques).

Chess Blog Day #32 - The London System

The London System is characterized by the moves 1.d4 d5 2.Bf4.

We've covered two e4 openings so far, so it's time to look at a d4 opening.

The London system is called a "system" because unlike most openings which have a lot of variations to memorise and precise move orders, in the London you can do the same setup against most responses. This makes it solid and ideal for beginners.

Your opponent doesn't have to play 1...d5 in order for you to play a London.

Your opponent is likely to play d5 at some point anyway. When the same opening position is reached via a different move order this is called a "transposition".

Typically you also should play d4, Nf3, e3, Bd3, Nbd2 and c3 in some order and end up with the following setup:

Because white tends to always play the same moves and it's very solid, many people criticise the London for being boring. It's even a bit of a meme in the chess community.

However, the London system has a 100% win rate in world championship matches. The current world champion, Ding Liren, used to to equalise in game six after being down 3-2. That's the only time the London has been played in a world championship match, but still.

Barbara McClintock was born on June 16, 1902. An American scientist and cytogeneticist who was awarded the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. She demonstrated the role of the telomere and centromere, regions of the chromosome that are important in the conservation of genetic information. She made an extensive study of the cytogenetics and ethnobotany of maize (corn) races from South America. McClintock discovered transposition and used it to demonstrate that genes are responsible for turning physical characteristics on and off. She developed theories to explain the suppression and expression of genetic information from one generation of maize plants to the next.

“The Regal Arthouse Cinema”, Walthamstow, London, UK _ Student: Joseph Garnett / BA3 _ 10.12.2024

The main objectives of the design are to redesign the existing building as a performance space & arthouse cinema/theatre. It will function as an additional programmatic feature of the existing community and its main focus will be the revitalisation of the neighbourhood. Students are introduced to the importance of weaving a new architecture within a historic fabric, retaining important façade elements, and reuse of existing materials to create an architecture that is responsive to the current needs of the community. The main objectives of the design are to re-design the abandoned structure as a performative, cinematic and theatrical space. The site will also include food & beverage outlets as temporary accommodation for visiting artists. It will function as a focal point in the area and provide a venue for the local community and revitalise the neighbourhood. The selected building will expand the students’ knowledge of periodic architecture while promoting their vision for a futuristic environment which integrates present and future aspirations of the local community.
