National Food Day
Getting families to pay more attention to what they are eating and then make improvements toward eating more real and whole foods is the entire essence of National Food Day!
History of National Food Day
When packaged foods and convenience foods began to grow in popularity during and after World War II, the number of people cooking meals at home from scratch seemed to hit a decline. And with women working outside the home more than ever, this seemed like a great compromise for family life.
But with the convenience came the addition of non-natural preservatives, artificial trans-fats and a lack of clear labeling. Because of this, many scientists and nutritionists were concerned that families were finding themselves uninformed and unaware about the things that they were ingesting into their bodies.
In 1971, the Center for Science in the Public Interest was founded by several scientists who were concerned for the health of families. As a consumer advocacy group that is science-based and independent of any government agency, the clear and ambitious agenda of CSPI has been to improve the food system in the United States to support healthier eating for American families.
One large goal of the CSPI was to make sustainable, healthy food available to anyone, and they have gone about advocating for this and raising awareness in a variety of ways. This includes legislation for more informed labeling, removal of certain dangerous trans-fats, advocacy for better school lunches and much more.
By 1975, the CSPI founded National Food Day in an effort to get more people involved in learning to shop, eat and cook in a healthier and more natural manner. In an attempt to offer something similar to Earth Day, National Food Day has been celebrated annually for several decades.
National Food Day is all about making an effort to eat more whole, real foods, such as fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains and natural proteins. While it might take a bit of thinking ahead and creating some new habits, the potential for massive results is certainly worth a little bit of effort!
National Food Day Timeline
1500 BC Yeast bread is first recorded
The earliest recorded bread made with yeast is in Ancient Egypt, though it is likely that fermentation was used in bread much earlier than this.
1921 First fast food restaurant opens
White Castle, America’s first fast food chain, opens in Wichita, Kansas and serves burgers made on an assembly line.
1971 Center for Science and Public Interest is founded
CSPI, the founding organization for National Food Day, is established by several scientists.
1975 First National Food Day is celebrated
Founded to raise awareness about the increasing industrialization of food in America, as well as hunger, increasing food prices, as well as the diet and health crisis in the United States.
2015 Food Day Apple Crunch takes place
On National Food Day this year, students are encouraged to participate by posting a picture of themselves biting into an apple, with the hashtag #FoodDay2015.
How to Celebrate National Food Day
Celebrating and joining in on the fun of National Food Day can not only be a delight to enjoy, but also is a great step in creating healthier habits that can last a lifetime!
Consider implementing some of these tasty ideas in honor of the day:
Eat Some Real Food!
Sure, it’s something that most humans do on most days, but National Food Day is a particularly important day for eating – and for enjoying the food that is eaten! On this day, make a bit of an effort to get all of the meals for today from the produce section or fresh meat section, rather than eating from pre-made, preservative filled convenience food.
Got a craving for some crunchy food? Put down that bag of potato chips and, instead, pick up a crisp apple or a crunchy carrot stick. Feeling like a sweet snack? Instead of that pre-packaged granola bar, consider whipping up some homemade granola that includes oats, raisins, cinnamon, vanilla extract and honey.
When it comes to eating real food for National Food Day (and beyond), the changes can be small but the effects are important and lasting!
Learn to Shop Differently for National Food Day
Many times, simply out of habit, people tend to do the same things over and over again. For those who are accustomed to purchasing processed foods, it can feel a bit difficult to overcome that habit. But, National Food Day is a great time to try to re-think the old habits of grocery shopping.
All it takes is a bit of time to stop and reconsider the way grocery lists are made and food is purchased. One of the best ways to level up that food shopping experience is to make a plan in advance, filled with healthier, natural and fresh foods.
In most cases, an important factor for learning to grocery shop differently is to spend the most amount of time around the perimeter of the grocery store. This is because the perimeter is typically where the healthier and most natural foods are located. Fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy items, the meat counter, and freshly baked items are all often located on the outside loop. Start by filling up the cart with produce and move on around the outside from there.
On the other hand, at the center are items that may be filled with preservatives, like frozen foods, pre-packaged snacks, convenience foods and more. Although some of these are not bad, simply being aware of this can help change the way grocery shopping impacts a family’s health.
Join in on a National Food Day Event
Different events in honor of National Food Day are planned in local communities around the country. Whether this means attending a lecture on how to stock a more natural kitchen at home, or joining in on a community event that is advocating for healthier school lunches, this day is a great one for getting connected with others who are making similar efforts!
Try Some New Healthy Recipes
Just because it is healthy doesn’t mean it can’t be quick and convenient! It’s all about learning to think a little differently about the way food is shopped for and prepared.
For instance, when the kids come home from school and want a snack, it’s easy to grab a bag of potato chips or a package of cookies. But what if they had some pre-cut carrots to dip into peanut butter instead? It’s just as delicious and tons more nutritious.
Or, instead of cooking up that box of prepared mac and cheese or a package of ramen noodles, try some Asian stir fry made from frozen, pre-sliced veggies. It’s just as easy and much tastier and healthier.
Longing for proteins that are more convenient? Try grabbing a rotisserie chicken from the deli section of the grocery store. It’s quick and easy, but also healthier than grabbing hamburgers at a fast food joint. Simply add some sliced cucumbers or home baked sweet potato fries as a side.
Even with a small effort, and simply paying attention, National Food Day has the potential to improve the diets and the health of Americans as well as people all over the world!

Crown Street Kitchen by Chef Miko Aspiras Offers New All-Day Australian Breakfast Menu
Tumblr media
Highly-acclaimed Celebrity Chef Miko Aspiras has opened a new restaurant down south that serves an all-day Australian breakfast menu and lots more. There may be several other breakfast restaurants in Metro Manila, but this one stands out for introducing the Australian way of enjoying a hearty breakfast any time of the day.
Tumblr media
Crown Street Kitchen by Chef Miko Aspiras opened just a few months ago at the Molito Lifestyle Center in Alabang. In partnership with Visum Ventures, Inc. headed by Filipino-Australian John Michael Hilton, this new restaurant is fast becoming a popular meeting and dining spot for foodies and families living in the south.
Tumblr media
The restaurant is open daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm. Guests can enjoy their breakfast menu any time of the day. Plush sofa chairs and comfortable seats make dining at Crown Street Kitchen a cozy and relaxing experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Hungry Kat was invited to sample some of the new menu items that Chef Miko had prepared for Crown Street Kitchen. Together with us was our good friend, PR and media specialist Spanky Enriquez.
Tumblr media
Renowned pastry chef Miko Aspiras is sharing his Australian experience with the Filipinos at Crown Street Kitchen. Chef Miko worked as the Executive Pastry Chef at Hilton Sydney for a couple of years, and this new menu is a compilation of his work and life experiences in Australia.
Tumblr media
We started with a few of their signature drinks. The Chocolate Strawberry Oat Latte is a unique and refreshing beverage that combines two of my favorite items, chocolates and strawberries!
Tumblr media
You can also choose to grab a cocktail from Crown Street Kitchen's sister restaurant upstairs, Salt & Ice, which we first visited at their Uptown BGC branch. The Hajimaru is a colorful concoction with roku, campari, strawberry, and sakura.
Tumblr media
Now it's time to sample some of Chef Miko's appetizers. The Garlic Focaccia is a savory pastry that really pops out with its flavors. This would be great for breakfast or even for merienda. The fluffy Italian bread is topped with sesame seeds, local honey, and whipped ricotta.
Tumblr media
The Tuna Loin Crudo is also a lovely item with its raw tuna finished with pomelo, herb oil, and balsamic vinegar. It's like a sashimi and ceviche rolled into one.
Tumblr media
One of our favorites that evening was the Mushroom Toast. This simple dish comes with a symphony of flavors featuring mushroom trio on top of toasted sourdough drizzled with truffle sauce.
Tumblr media
If you truly want a taste of Australia, go and order the Toasty. This house-made sourdough bread comes with Australian butter, and Vegemite.
Tumblr media
So what exactly is Vegemite? I had heard of this a few times before but we had never tried it until today. Vegemite is a dark-brown, nutrient-rich paste made of extract of yeast and vegetables which is widely enjoyed in Australia.
Tumblr media
Chef Mico even demonstrated how he enjoys his Vegemite. Just place a few scoops on your bread together with butter and you are good to go. He said that he makes this for breakfast everyday while he was in Australia.
Tumblr media
Now let's try some of the pastas. The Spaghetti Vongole is a popular Italian dish with its spaghetti pasta cooked with clams, garlic, white wine, and chili flakes. This has a bit of a spicy kick which everyone seemed to enjoy.
Tumblr media
There's also the Pappardelle Lamb Ragu, a rich and meaty pasta dish cooked with slowly braised lamb ragu, the ultimate Italian comfort food. This Succulent lamb shoulder is slowly braised with onions, carrots, celery, tomatoes, & hardy herbs for a meaty combination.
Tumblr media
We all loved the Penne Alla Vodka Prawn with Chili which comes with generous servings of prawns. It's not as spicy as I thought it would be so no worries for me.
Tumblr media
Australians are very proud of their meaty barbecues so the Aussie Barbie is the best way to experience Australian cuisine. This big bad platter comes with an assortment of meats and seafood including beef, chicken, sausages, and shrimp.
Tumblr media
Everyone knows that I am a big steak lover so my favorite dish was obviously the Tenderloin Steak with Pumpkin Purée. This gorgeous beef is cooked perfectly and served medium rare.
Tumblr media
For desserts, we tried several of Chef Miko's tempting cakes and pastries. The Banana Bread Toastie comes with caramelized bananas and a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Tumblr media
There's also the Orange Ricotta Cheesecake and Chef Miko's signature Chocolate Cake to complete our adventurous journey to the Land Down Under.
Tumblr media
We would like to thank Chef Miko Aspiras for hosting our Australian culinary expedition and showing us a slice of the Aussie life. Crown Street Kitchen is a great new addition to the growing lineup of foodie destinations in Alabang so make sure to drop by if you happen to be visiting the south

Late to post, but here’s Week 2 of Spellbound.
-
Aug. 22
I woke up around 11AM.
Did some video editing and started uploading the footage of me drawing that Remus pixel portrait of Remus.
The did some dishes and made today’s Hello Fresh Meal. Mushroom Penne with truffle cream. I liked it to a middling extent (I’m enjoying truffle more myself, but I recognize how intense of a flavor it is). But yeah. It was met with a “meh”.
Spent a few hours updating some logs and documenting last few day’s of events. Then, I did today’s exercise.
First, today’s DD. 40 climbers with EC. Pretty fun and breezy. I tried to land lightly on my feet this time - just to feel graceful like that.
Last, Chapter 7 of the SbP. I was to charge and cast “Healing Level 1 Spell“ to help an NPC out. I rested about 1′ in between sets - it was mostly breezy yoga... mostly. Glad the up/down dogs were done in pairs, the child’s pose was a nice breather too. Really felt the fatigue build-up when it came to that plank hold. But it was pretty satisfying to transition between exercises as smoothly as possible!
Did some online shopping and watched YouTube before bed... late again.
-
Aug. 23
I woke up after 11AM.
Did some chatting and whatnot before getting in today’s exercise early (which was welcomingly chill.)
First, today’s DD. 1′ plank punches with EC. I counted exactly 60 reps today, so I’m fairly happy about that pace!
Last, Chapter 8 of the SbP. I was to charge and cast “Tracking Spell“. It was nice to just do meditation again. This required 10′ and I focused on breathing from the belly as best I could. Mind wandered a lil but that’s just how it goes. It was still pretty relaxing!
Chill was disrupted by a transient health scare with Dad... threw my entire day off. Was supposed to be movie night, but between anxiety about that and fear that things would interrupt movie time. But chatting and browsing stuff helped a bit.
I got to bed obscenely late again.
-
Aug. 24
I woke up around 2PM.
Had technical issues but more notably there was a pretty loud/angry argument bro had with the Uncle about his negligent cooking and mess-cleaning leading to the kitchen sink being backed-up.
There was shoving involved. Fucked me up mentally for a good while, if I’m totally honest... I tried doing some Sides analysis and chatted for a distraction, before doing my exercise.
First, today’s DD. 40 scorpion twists with EC. A little less fun to do with a slightly full stomach. But oh well. I like the exercise well enough.
Last, Chapter 9 of the SbP. I was told to charge a couple more spells.
First had to be “Shield“. Variable rest times, today. I could feel the jitters start to melt as I went along, so that was more than welcome. Some ankle complaint noted from the jumping lunges, but at least it wasn’t very many of those.
Second was just any attack spell - I charged “Wind Blast“. Pretty variable rest here, too. Kinda didn’t want to do a lot of floorwork today - but I do think I hit the arms a bit harder for it. Still gotta be mindful of your elbows for plank rotations, too.
That helped dial down the jitters I was having for a bit... so did chatting and trying to sketch a fan art idea out.
But I still wound up pulling an allnighter because I was an anxious mess today... I didn’t really get much done other than some rambling on the fandom blog and watching YouTube...
-
Aug. 25
This morning I did some dishes, made a trip reservation, ranted on Twitter about sources of distress before taking a couple hour nap.
Spent most of day chatting and browsing stuff.
It was a bit late, but I did get in some exercise today.
First, today’s DD. 2′ single leg hops, without EC. Had to drop at 1′30″ mark, rested a few seconds to finish up. Only counted the the longer set’s reps - 120. Honestly, sleep-deprivation REALLY didn’t help.
Last, Chapter 10 of the SbP. Casted the “Shield” spell, though I’m not doing the probability check, the roll I got was a success anyways.
Then I was to charge & cast, “Healing Level 1 Spell“ again. Whoo boy... eating jalapeno poppers was NOT the smartest decision shortly before this. Gave myself some heartburn and coughing because of said heartburn. But I powered through that. :I
Then, I hit the showers and washed my mask. Browsed tumblr for a bit before hitting the sack. Happy but unsurprised by managing the yellow zone. Exhausted and I had somewhere to be tomorrow.
-
Aug. 26
I woke up around 11AM.
Went to Seeking Safety Group. Went alright.
Got home and spent some hours streaming/making that glitchy, hellish mash-up I did for silly reason. Also spent time chatting and browsing about.
Very late, but I managed to get in my exercise around 11PM, tonight.
First, today’s DD. 2′ side leg raise with EC (1′/1′). This was pretty breezy to get through. Get more out of this if you can make a right angle with side of hip to floor.
Last, Chapter 11 of the SbP. I was to charge and cast the “Super Strength Spell“. Variable to max amount of rest taken between sets, this time. Tried to make the push-ups decent. But it was pretty easy to get through this in a timely fashion.
Spent rest of my night doing Sides analysis stuff. Got to bed obscenely late... only saving grace was that it was before noon. :/
-
Aug. 27
I woke up around noon.
I spent most of my day chatting and doing that Sides analysis stuff (interpreting pairing platonically positively.) I wound up writing like 2.3k words on that instead of fic writing... woops.
Did my exercise late.
Spent vast majority of my day working on a positive analysis of all the Sides pairings [platonic intent], set to post tomorrow. Had a lot of fun chatting about it too. I wrote like 2.3k words on it... orz
First, today’s DD. 2′ O-Pose with EC. That definitely got me trembling the whole way through. Things got real after 1′ and legs started to feel like dropping in the last 20″. But I’m really happy I managed it. This is a personal favorite exercise. Very meditative!
Last, Chapter 12 of the SbP. I was to charge and cast the “Invisibility Spell.“ Max rest. The plank rotations were the hardest part - everything else was pretty manageable.
I did get to bed too late, almost in the yellow zone.
-
Aug. 28
I woke up a bit after 9AM.
I had to go to my psychiatrist appointment today. Went alright... got a chance to share that scary!Remus art with him. I did mention the acute shit that’s been happening... but also my more positive coping stuff.
Got home and when the Hello Fresh arrived - I did dishes and made today’s meal. Italian noodle soup. This was another chicken sausage based soup - pretty enjoyable. Bro liked the kale soup more. But at least I think it was more accessible for pops and his lack of teeth.
I was already tired at that point... but I had to help deal with kitchen sink problems I didn’t realize were an issue. Whatever the Uncle did to “fix“ the sink broke it and it was leaking the entire time I was doing dishes! Fucking hell.
Had to take another shower after that.
Active rest day, only devoted exercise was going to be  today’s DD. 40 raised leg circles with EC. Not a fan of neck strain. But doable. Just glad it was only that with my energy levels.
Got to bed later than yesterday.

National Food Day
Eating well doesn't have to be boring or restrictive — fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods that energize and nourish you.
1500 BC
Yeast bread is first recorded
The earliest recorded bread made with yeast is in Ancient Egypt, though it is likely that fermentation was used in bread much earlier than this.
1921
First fast food restaurant opens
White Castle, America’s first fast food chain, opens in Wichita, Kansas and serves burgers made on an assembly line.
1971
Center for Science and Public Interest is founded
CSPI, the founding organization for National Food Day, is established by several scientists.
1975
First National Food Day is celebrated
Founded to raise awareness about the increasing industrialization of food in America, as well as hunger, increasing food prices, as well as the diet and health crisis in the United States.
2015
Food Day Apple Crunch takes place

I love New York. I love drinking. I abso-fuck*n-lutely love drinking in New York. I love it so much I went to New York just to drink - caution: this trip is not, and I repeat, not for everybody. I mean, what’s not to love about drinking in New York?! The endless supply of bars; the attractive, charming and talented bar staffs, and let’s not forget the beyond delicious libations they serve up ‘til 3 (even 4) AM on a Monday - astounding, especially when you come from a small town where last call is 12.45, if you’re lucky. Before our trip, we agreed on the ‘one-drink-one-bar-rule’ - a rule that we slowly abandoned as the night progressed. After what felt like a 12 hour commute from YVR, I arrived in Penn Station, starved and parched. A quick change and a touch up later, I finally made it to dinner at WildAir: a hip, trendy, wine-focused Lower East Side restaurant from the boys who opened the Michelin-starred Contra. The food menu is a fairly simple: tartare, mushrooms, clams, and allegedly out-of-this-world fried squid. The wine list, on the other hand, is extensive and edgy. If you’re into the whole natural, skin-contact wine situation like we are, you’ll probably see us there again with a bottle of Susucaru, snacking on some fried squid. A couple blocks down from Wildair, is Bar Goto. A cozy Japanese bar with a MOOD AF lighting, brought to you by Kenta Goto, a Pegu club alumn. The man himself made me a plum Sazerac the last time I was in. It easily became one of those cocktails you crave over and over again. So naturally, I got one, and another one for good measure. The whisky finally kicked in. With a little buzz and a much better mood, we made it to Death and Company and put our name on the list. Wait time was about an hour and 30 mins, enough for a cocktail or two at Angel’s Share – or so we thought. It’s another 45 mins wait for us, but luckily, they have a sister bar next door that’s much less crowded, a little brighter, and slightly more peaceful. Our new friend Ryan, who’s bartending that night made me a ‘Bewitched’, a riff on Old Fashioned with grilled and spiced truffle-infused whisky, cognac, Kokuto syrup, bitters and Kaffir lime leaf. It’s as decadent as it sounds. Stunning mixture of flavour, texture, and aroma on each indulgent sip. It was on point. It’s finally time for us to get to Death and Co. Their Manhattan’s been calling my name since September last year. Everything about Death and Co’s Manhattan is perfect: the bourbon, the vermouth, the ratio, the temperature, just everything. Say what you want (I actually got into an argument on this) but this, is the best Manhattan in Manhattan. The night spiralled down the rabbit hole after the next drink, a Boulevardier - I remember we had two more cocktails there, but I can’t, for the sake of me, remember what they were. I know there was gin, somewhere, somehow. I won’t bore you with the details of our challenging journey home so let’s skip to the morning after - two bottles of Pedialyte, two advils, and a hot shower later. Our mind was focused on a bougie-ish scrambled eggs and caviar at Buvette, and so was the whole West Village apparently. “50 minutes” - the cute European host said. Other people would typically take this time to walk around, maybe get an oat-mylk latte and a croissant. Since we’re no ordinary people, and it just so happened that their sister bar ‘Pisellino’ just opened down the street (what a coincidence), we kinda had to stop by for a drink. It’s 1145, and in front of me was a full, frosty glass (and a mini carafe) of dry martini with olive and twist on the side. What a perfect West Village morning: sunny, breezy, and boozy. By the time we sat down for breakfast, I was a little buzzed, again. But nothing a plate fluffy scrambled eggs and caviar, waffle with berry compotes, croque madame, and another bottle of bubbly rosé can’t fix. We then spent the afternoon roaming around Soho, shopping for all the things we convinced ourselves we desperately needed - Hello new Thom Browne fragrance! It’s a quarter to eight, we were dressed to the nines, ready for a 10/10 night out in New York City. Our plan to have a chic pre-dinner cocktail at Polo Bar was cancelled because someone (aka me) forgot to call and make a reso, and it was packed there. We had to settle for the King Cole Bar across the street where the drinks were meh and the price tag was awfully expensive (no more $25, bland, overly spicy Red Snapper for us) - I went in purely to relive my Andy Sachs’ Harry Potter unpublished manuscript moment and nothing more. Dinner tonight was at the hyped up Korean steakhouse Cote in Flatiron. The one Michelin-starred restaurant is all about high quality meat, delectable side dishes, and impressive wine list (Their beverage director is such a star!). Here’s the thing, if you can make a hanger steak taste so succulently delicious, you’re doing something right. That’s exactly what they do at Cote. The steak (aside from the Galbi) is prepared in the simplest fashion: heat and salt, no marinade, no spices, no nothing - it was perfect. The service was impeccable, the timing of each dish was flawless. With a tummy filled with steak, scallion salad, and rice, we decided to walk our way back to the West Village - seemed crazy far, but at that point, it was necessary. We made it to Dante, who recently crowned #1 bar in the world, so naturally it was very busy. The apero-focused bar is famous for their ‘Negroni Sessions’, which is impressive and can be adventurous. From the most classic, to the most unexpected variation with tequila, banana and pineapple shrub, they do it, and they do it well. If you’re in the mood to splurge (we weren’t lol), their vintage martini is absolutely worth the $65 price tag (the Plymouth gin from ‘60s alone is drool-worthy). I, decided to go for the Olivette: a savoury, brine-y, less serious cousin of the vesper. We then visited Katana Kitten. Another bar in the village that scored a spot in this year’s 50 Best Bars, number 14 to be exact. It’s a fun (the owner Masahiro Urushido is also quite a legend), non pretentious neighbourhood bar with playful and whimsical cocktails. I obviously started with a Hinoki martini, yet another variation of the vesper, while Handika was having a slushy, boozy, crushed-icy ‘dessert’ (didn’t count as a drink, apparently). It was difficult to have just one drink here: would you skip on a yuzu-sisho daiquiri? how about a genever-based negroni with umeshu? or a calpico swizzle? Ya I don’t think so either. We had one of each, plus a another sisho G&T, and the classic highball. YOLO. For the sake of settling our argument on the best Manhattan in Manhattan, I invited Doris to join us at Employees Only across the street from Katana Kitten, conveniently. By the time we saw each other, my Manhattan was gone, and I was drinking a Monkey 47 martini yet again. That’s about all I can recall from that night. Oh wait, there was a tequila shot and another Manhattan - the end. Monday morning - not enough Pedialyte, water nor Advil in the world to bring me back to life. I, somehow, managed to meet Patrick for coffee, had a bite of a mushroom toast, and stayed alive. I made it back to the hotel just in time for a much-needed nap before check out and a trip to Williamsburg for lunch. It was rough. I kept telling myself another lie of “I’m never drinking again” for the 30 minute subway ride to Peter Luger. Peter Luger is a classic: steak (yes, another one), burger, with a side of onion, tomatoes, and fries. We then gathered enough energy to get to DUMBO for a picture of two (hundreds) before saying goodbye to each other - sad. I zipped back downtown for a meeting. A VERY EXCITING MEETING. I got the pleasure to visit the Bon Appetit test kitchen, thanks for the my lovely host Chris Morocco (Yes - we’re friends now HA!). it’s only appropriate that I wore my ‘Thirsty for Andy’ t-shirt - Andy was there, and we obvs. bonded over my OOTD. Claire was doing her ‘Gourmet Makes’, Carla was there, Molly too, Oh I also got to meet Alex Delany and Em Scultz too. It’s a casual Monday afternoon at BA test kitchen. It’s now cocktail hour and the one man I got to meet this time was the man everyone needs in their life: mister Steven Huynh himself. An instagram-turned-real-life-friend that I’ve known for 7 years. We met for the first time that night and we got along over dry martini-inspired cocktails and crudité at Thomas Keller’s TAK room (in the Hudson Yards). Sitting at the bar at TAK room feels luxurious but not intimidating. The bar team was friendly, interactive, and passionate about amaro. They even took us downstairs to check out the vintage amaro collections at their speakeasy, Bookbinder. After a snack break, we visited David Chang’s new restaurant Kawi downstairs. Steven had a pineapple rum daiquiri, I, had a ‘New Fashioned’ - a play of the classic Old Fashioned with coconut-washed Japanese whisky, sencha and bitters. It was delicious. The buzz is back on, and I felt so much better (HA!). Our next stop was The Nomad Hotel - our absolute favorite. We felt like we’re home right away, especially after a delicious Monkey 47 martini (Nobody’s counting, right?). Zanib joined us later that night for a negroni, and of course, I had to refresh my almost empty drink. Another friend Erik joined us for one more drink. Things started to get blurry real quick, I recall there was a Manhattan, a Brooklyn, a rum cocktail of some sort, fried chicken, and a Macallan 12 at one point before we’re back in the car for a nightcap at Blacktail. A tiki-focused sister bar of Dead Rabbit. We’re welcomed by a pink slushy daiquiri, and the bartender made me a delicious, stirred rum cocktail to sip on - don’t ask what it’s called. I finally tapped out and made my way back to Brooklyn. With close to zero voice, I got to Newark and flew back to Vancouver via. Denver - yes, I made a stop to Death and Co for a Sazerac-esque cocktail called the Uncanny Valley and a lobster ceviche. Here I am two weeks later, still recovering from the worst sore throat of my life, slowly getting my voice back (still can’t hit Mariah’s note tho :s). Will I do it again? ABSOLUTELY! Thanks for the amazing time New York - until next time!

Winter 2019 mixtape.
The 4th of July was a total bust and Halloween was no dice. I’m an Industrialist. How could I not celebrate that? I didn’t. But what can you do? It stings having to sit back with your hands tied behind your back while everyone big-ups these days and there’s nothing you can do about it except feel excluded as everyone celebrates. Not Christmas. It was coming and I promised myself I wouldn’t sit out. No, no, no. I texted Aunt Laurie and she told me to come through. The roads to the Deer Park station were wide open and sparse of cars. Partly sunny, passing clouds. The train arrived on time with none of the construction work or unbearable impatient New York-waiting. Taking the Deer Park line to Penn Station and then the D-line to Coney Island is two hours but it didn’t feel like it. It’s a different feeling arriving here for Christmas than it was last summer when I felt bewildered, wounded, and confused at the same time. On the 25th I felt fine knowing I wouldn’t be sitting home thinking of witches in Christmas dresses but instead spending several hours with my Coney family, free of worry or anxiety. I made sure I wouldn’t drop the ball like the last time.
I watched the fast familiar blur of graffiti-laced walls, trees, buildings, and electric poles speeding by, sitting backwards while listening to Chandra’s Transportation (ha!) and thinking of how much of a real New York City no-wave album it was. I hit Penn Station and from there took the D-line to Surf. Ave. I walk out of the station to wait for a few blistering cold minutes until Aunt Laurie arrives to pick me up and posits me back to her residence where her two giant sons (Michael and Peter), their significant halves, and other close familial components were all waiting for me. Minus her daughter Jane who was with her man somewhere else on the island. My spirits  upon arriving were up. Laurie had brothers, sisters, nephews, and her nana rolled in with her French-Creole nursing assistant. She also brought over Big Pete, another component from my Atari Brooklyn youth whom I haven’t seen in years. He was very happy to see me. He quickly realized how fast-forward time went and how old he really was, which terrified him. For starters, he told stories of when him and my old man worked at an electronics shop in late-Seventies Broadway, stories which my sis- and my Aunt Theresa would also tell at great length and amazement. He also remembered me being the mathematician of the family, and asked whatever happened to that career path I assumedly chose.
And this being a full-blooded Italian family, you’d know we go all-out on food. Without question. Garlic bread, ziti, eggplant, lasagna, cold cuts (sopresatta, capicola, salami, pepperoni), diced cheese, chicken cutlet parmesan. You name it, Laurie served it. She brought it all out and was looking to kill the entire family and not with a kiss of death. I pulled her over and asked her if nana’s assistant would join us. Rest assured she would. Good, because I wanted to be sure that everyone gets included; no matter the color, country, or belief system. Everyone plays. The endless yule log was endlessly looping. Not from our classic station WPIX 11 but from The Hallmark Channel so it wasn’t traditional. Accept nothing less. The 13 of us said a pre-dinner prayer, took photos and commenced eating as we passed around large plates of food and helped ourselves to cold-cut platters, endless stories, and everyone being too loud. I almost died in the process.
Since Big Pete mentioned working with my old man at the dinner table, it was about time I called him, who was three weeks in resting at the hospital with respiratory problems. I tried getting him on the line for two hours straight but no results. I wasn’t giving up. I gave it a rest to tell my aunt about my progress with my anxiety / depression and so far so good. She fed me dessert in cookies, chocolates, mints, and truffles. Christ, make it stop. I learned Big Pete and Michael were hiding out in their storage shed just relaxing out. I swore to Big Pete and said “look, let me make this happen”. So I tried one more time and, what do you know? My old man picks up. 77 and still hanging on to dear life, literally. I tell him my current whereabouts and said someone from his past wanted to talk to him. He was scared shitting. I told him to hold on and passed the phone to Big Pete.
“Hey, how are ya’? Remember me? Remember Norman’s House Of Deals on 22nd Street, eh? You remember me bustin ya’ chops on the assembly line, don’t ya’?”
My old man froze in fright. He didn’t know what to think. He thought this was This Is Your Life or I Got A Secret starring Gary Moore and his zip-a-dee-doo-dah bowtie. He didn’t recognize him. Big Pete kept pushing but my old man couldn’t remember. Again, he’s 77. His memory is a bokeh blur and only getting worse. Big Pete gave up and handed the phone to me. I Got A Secret now became Password and gave my old man a vital clue: Aunt Laurie? Now he finally got it. His mind was blown. Now was the time to jog his stale memory even more and gave the phone back to Big Pete. It all came back to my old man now. He couldn’t believe it. Up came the memories of box-truck burglaries, stick-ups, cheap goods, Jewish mobsters, and the best of low-end digital electronics sold during the gritty, lawless, dirty Seventies New York. They conversed for a good five minutes before declaring an end to memory lane.
Michael’s kid was tearing up all of his Christmas gifts: a mix of toys, books, educational gifts, and clothes. We sat and have more food. Aunt Laurie had more surprise guests come over: two hipster male friends who were her assistants and a younger Mexican girl who was dating one of them. They all sat and spoke about their future plans while Peter and I cracked jokes over chocolate pastels. The night was almost over and Laurie dialed up my Uber for the ride home. But before I said goodbye to everyone, she handed me $100 and a Christmas card which everyone co-signed. She didn’t have to and I didn’t ask for it nor deserve it, but she hushed me nicely to take it and I didn’t have the option to say “no”. My ride arrives and now I say goodbye to everyone until next summer. I walk out the front door and Peter follows me out. His tall death-metal stature intimidates the Uber driver, but rest assured nothing was going to happen as we repeat the legendary drive I had last summer: the gauntlet of The Belt Parkway through Caesar’s Bay, under the Verrazano Bridge, Sunset Park, Red Hook, and through the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, lower Manhattan, Times Square, and this time ending at Madison Square Garden. What was different about this ride was no setting sun but a partial moon, passing clouds, and a night sky. No ships, bicyclists, fata morgana, or the wavering sparkle shimmering on the waters. No flashbacks of what was, or what it could be.
Since Black Friday, I’ve shifted down to something more relaxing. My blood’s not racing as much, save for a few occasions where over-anxious customers have this unnecessary urgency to intercept and ambush me for their petty non-issues to catch. Manners and etiquette are dead. They turn into children or those “best buddies” who act like they’ve known me for 20 years, whistling at me to “come over here” or use their magical handwaves to grab my attention like I’m a city cab from halfway across the store. Who the fuck do you people think you are? Things have been much quieter at the residency. The key players have been away for most of the last three months. I walk in and wait for no lights on or doors wide open. Drama has been to a minimum. No messes left unclaimed for because of sheer laziness. The smell of stale aerated piss on the bathroom floor is now a non-issue. The grime is gone. No television up at 100 that I hear double volume through the walls at four-in-the-morning when I go to sleep, or the clinking of plates and shuffling of utensils in action because someone must eat at five-in-the-morning after their eight-hour television marathon run. I can focus on stability for once. I’m not waiting for the next thing to throw my concentration off or expect to wake up in the middle of the night and not fall back asleep again. The recent months haven’t been as tense as the previous six before it, but the quiet allowed something else for me to focus on.
Last winter I felt so good about myself. Bonuses, tax refunds, benefits, and extra paychecks set me up for what was a very promising time. I re-built myself and saw potential in me I never seen before. I had essential conversations with my friends and allies at the radio station. They sat with me during my show to talk about who’s on the radar, what books we read, surprise music trades, and sharing their hotly-anticipated city shows with the rest of us in such a passionate fervor. There was so much in high-resolution color I could see, the sense of euphoria in longer sunshine days, the hours spent thumbing through vinyl racks, and the lines of communication with certain people made me feel I had something to look forward to.
It’s a new year, and this winter made me feel hopeless. Surprise medical bills, traffic tickets, overspending, and rumors that tax season would make most people pay heavily all have me worried. With a choke on funds, acquisitions are at a halt. I have plans for a record-store tour for the end of the year and buying a new camera kit when money is put away but it may not happen. I was given a $3,000+ raise over twelve months as the company wants to retain talented staff but the money can’t wait. Most of the vital players at my station moved on. I don’t see them as much as I want to so the art of discussing new artists, hidden discoveries, or the topic of whether bands [that haven’t released a record in decades] should sound the same in pleasing their fanbase is mostly lost. I still have my co-workers and we recently had a garage potluck and Switch night, not a return to huge entrees at my neighborhood arcade. Every month not taking the train to the city is time, breath, and opportunity lost, and I won’t get it back. That’s it.
But the one most all-important thing missing is having someone on the other end to go toe-to-toe with music, literature, counter-culture, philosophy, and ways of thinking and seeing that you couldn’t imagine; someone to engage you with a text to say hello when you came home from a full day’s worth of travel. Things which are so rare I can’t begin to imagine. The ones who meant a lot to you before instead leave you with a new hefty emotional debt on top of the others still left unanswered for. And they come with daily interest, too. It’s human nature. What’s also missing was the soul of last year. Playing Sacred Bones and Hospital Production tributes on the air. Silent Servant, Lust For Youth, Molly Nilsson, Blvck Ceiling, Ninos Du Brasil, Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, Boy Harsher; all the sounds that made for a distinctive feeling and added to all that was going on around me. It’s now replaced with The KVB, Kanga, Void Vision, Figure Study, Azar Swan, Body Of Light, Broken English Club, Cabaret Nocturne, Soma Sema, Undertheskin, and Pink Turns Blue. It’s not the whole story as you’ll see. I know I’ll never have it the way it was then and the residue of last winter lingered on for this one to smell almost the same. If only the ones most essential to me could’ve stayed would the last few months had a better outcome. I’d only wish.
But, every season is a new game we try to make the best of. Spring is here and summer’s coming. I won’t give up. I refuse to let my anxiety and depression get in the way of what could be a tremedous payout. I’ll make it happen. I know I will.

Scandic Anglais åpner Nordens første Jamie’s Italian
Tumblr media
Dato: 15-10-2014 10:37 CEST Opprinnelig tittel på pressemeldingen: Scandic Anglais åpner Nordens første Jamie’s Italian Kategori: , Restaurant Hotell jamie oliver Scandic
Tumblr media
