What is a Nakshatra in Vedic Astrology?

A Nakshatra in Vedic astrology is a star or constellation in the sky that is said to influence the personality and destiny of a person. Each Nakshatra is ruled by a different deity and is said to have its own unique energy and qualities.

There are a couple of ways the term Nakshatra could be interpreted. Naks (sky) + Kshtra(Region) meaning division of the sky in number of regions. Other breakdown is Naksha (Map) + Tara (Star) which in Sanskrit means a map of stars.

To understand how many regions do we divide the sky into and why do we choose this number we have to look at our nearest neighbor - the Moon.

The Moon revolves around the Earth and takes 27.32 days on an average to complete one cycle around the earth called sidereal month. Based on this we divide the sky into 28 or 27 divisions 27 Nakshatra system is widely used. In 28 Nakshatra system the Nakshatra “Abhijit” is also included.

27 division is most prevalent system. 27 division simplifies motion of the moon, i.e moon traverses one Nakshatra each day.

A Nakshatra is the environment from which the planets transit. The energies radiated by the planets are greatly determined by the Nakshtaras they are in. The energy of the planet can be benefic or malefic depending on the Nakshatra they are placed in.

Nakshatras are defined by the stars in the periphery of the ecliptic The 1st Nakshatra is Ashwini and it’s starting point coincides with the start of the first zodiac Aries. From there 27 equal divisions are drawn. Each division is of 13 degrees 20 minutes. These are named after prominent starts in that division or near it. As each zodiac spans 30 degrees of the sky, each zodiac is spread across 2-2.5 Nakshatras. Some Nakshtras are split up in 2 zodiacs

What are the 27 Nakshatras?

The 27 Nakshatras are important in Vedic astrology. The Nakshatras are important in predictions related to a person's future, and are also used in determining muhurtha (auspicious time) for various undertakings. The Nakshatras are also used in calculating the birth star or Nakshatra of a child which is the Nakshatra of the Moon at the time of the birth.

Each Nakshatra is further divided into smaller divisions 4th - called Padas . Each Pada has a sound associated with it and serves as the naming convention used to name the babies. Naming the new-borns with the name starting with that sound is considered auspicious.

1st lord in 9th house

गरीब, बिष्णु रूप धरि छल किया, मारे भसमां भूत।

रूप मोहिनी धरि लिया, बेगि सिंहारे दूत।।136।।

गरीब, शिब कूं बिंदु जराईयां, कंदर्प कीया नांस।

फेरि बौहरि प्रकाशियां, ऐसी मनकी बांस।।137।।

गरीब, लाख लाख जुग तप किया, शिब कंदर्प कै हेत।

काया माया छाडिकरि, ध्यान कंवल शिब श्वेत।।138।।

◆ वाणी नं. 134-136 का सरलार्थ :- सुक्ष्म मन की मार सर्व जीवों पर गिरती है। सब एक समान सुक्ष्म मन के सामने विवश हैं। जब तक पूर्ण सतगुरू नहीं मिलता, तब तक सुक्ष्म मन के सामने विवेक कार्य नहीं करता। हिन्दु धर्म के श्रद्धालु श्री शिव जी को तो सक्षम मानते हैं। सब देवों का देव यानि महादेव कहते हैं। सुक्ष्म मन के कारण वे भी मार खा गए।

◆ प्रमाण :- जिस समय भस्मासुर ने तप करके भस्मकण्डा श्री शिव जी से वचनबद्ध करके ले लिया था। तब भस्मासुर ने शिव से कहा कि मैं तेरे को भस्म करूँगा। तेरे को मारकर तेरी पत्नी पार्वती को अपनी पत्नी बनाऊँगा। तब भय के कारण श्री शिव जी भाग लिए। भस्मासुर में भी सिद्धियां थी। वह भी साथ दौड़ा। शिवजी भय के कारण अधिक गति

से दौड़ा तथा एक मोड़ पर मुड़ गया। उसी मोड़ पर एक सुंदर स्त्री खड़ी थी। उसने भस्मासुर की ओर अश्लील दृष्टि से देखा और बोली कि शिव तो आसपास रूकेगा नहीं, जाने दे। आजा मेरे साथ मौज-मस्ती कर ले। मैं तेरा ही इंतजार कर रही हूँ। तुम पूर्ण मर्द हो, शक्तिशाली हो। भस्मासुर पर काम वासना का भूत सवार था ही, उसे और क्या चाहिए था? उसी समय रूक गया। युवती ने उसका हाथ पकड़कर नचाया। गंडहथ नृत्य करते समय हाथ सिर पर करना होता है। भस्मासुर का भस्मकण्डे वाला हाथ भस्मासुर के सिर पर करने को युवती ने कहा कि इस नृत्य में दांया हाथ सिर पर करते हैं। यह नृत्य पूरा करके मिलन करेंगे। ज्यों ही भस्मासुर ने भस्मकण्डे वाला हाथ सिर पर किया तो युवती ने बोला भस्म। उसी समय भस्मासुर जलकर नष्ट हो गया। वह युवती भगवान स्वयं ही शिव शंकर की जान की रक्षा के लिए बने थे।, परंतु महिमा विष्णु को दी। विष्णु रूप में प्रकट होकर परमात्मा उस भस्मकण्डे को लेकर श्री शिव के सामने खडे़ हो गए तथा शिव से कहा हे शिव!

इतने तेज क्यों दौड़ रहे हो? शिव ने सब बात बताई कि आप भी दौड़ जाओ। भस्मासुर मुझे मारने को मेरे पीछे लगा है। तब विष्णु रूपधारी परमात्मा ने कहा कि देख! आपका

भस्मकण्डा मेरे पास है। शिव ने तुरंत पहचान लिया और रूककर पूछा कि यह आपको कैसे मिला? विश्वास नहीं हो रहा है। भगवान ने कहा यह न पूछ। अपना कण्डा लो और घर को जाओ। परंतु शिव को विश्वास नहीं हो रहा था कि उग्र रूप धारण किए भस्मासुर से कैसे ये भस्मकण्डा लिया। जिद कर ली। तब परमात्मा ने कहा कि फिर बताऊँगा। इतना कहकर अंतर्ध्यान (अदृश्य) हो गए। शिव कुछ आगे गया तो देखा कि एक अति सुंदर युवती

अर्धनग्न शरीर में मस्ती से एक बाग में टहल रही थी। दूर तक कोई व्यक्ति दिखाई नहीं दे रहा था। शिवजी ने इधर-उधर देखा और लड़की की ओर मिलन के उद्देश्य से चले। लड़की शिव को देखकर मुस्कुराकर आगे को कुछ तेज चाल से चटक-मटककर चल पड़ी।

शिव ने मुस्कट के बाद लड़की का हाथ पकड़ा। तब तक शिव का वीर्यपतन हो चुका था। उसी समय विष्णु रूप में परमात्मा खड़े थे और कहा कि मैंने भस्मासुर को इस प्रकार वश में करके गंडहथ नाच नचाकर भस्म किया है।

संत गरीबदास जी ने सुक्ष्म मन की शक्ति बताई है कि शिवजी की पत्नी पार्वती तीन लोक में अति सुंदर स्त्रियों में से एक थी। अपनी पत्नी को छोड़कर शिवजी ने चंचल माया

यानि बद नारी से मिलन (sex) करने के लिए उसे पकड़ लिया। यह सुक्ष्म मन की उत्पत्ति का उत्पात है।

◆ वाणी नं. 137-141 का सरलार्थ :-
