I haven’t been on Tumblr in a minute (like a long time) but I do consider myself an OG because this place used to be my home. Literally the only site I’d visit for hours at a time. I’ve cycled through many fandoms (with no side blogs) and now I’m back with an OBSESSION with INCEPTION. Particularly the dream husbands Eames and Arthur.

I don’t know how this fandom or this ship has escaped me for so long, but I am balls deep in it now. I’ve been reading Inception fanfic for about a year now, and I would love if anyone has any recs! Also, if you have recs of blogs I should follow that will inundate me with Eames and Arthur gossip/lore/gushing/nonsense I’d be forever grateful!

The Psycho Heroes series (A/E) by FiaMac - For realzies, I’ve read this series probably 15 times already in the short time I’ve been in the fandom. It is my absolute FAVE.

The Day series (A/E) by RurouniHime - I’ve also read this series many times, particularly UnDays. Ugh, so so so good.

The Trembling of the Migratory Birds (A/A/E) by eretria - I’m not opposed to some threesome action as long as Arthur and Eames are somewhere in the mix and oh ho ho this fic is a doozy.

Meant To Lead A Man Astray (A/E) by kyrene - This was so fun to read and hot af so I do go back to read it occasionally just to get my mind off of a bad day.

I Seem To Be A Verb (A/E) by Aja - A Notting Hill AU. Like omfg as if I need to say more. Fucking magical is this fic.

Presque Vue (A/E) by rageprufrock - No words. Just ugh *chef’s kiss*

Aaaaaaanywho, those are just some of the MANY fics I have bookmarked on AO3. If anyone thinks there is Arthur/Eames fic I should read or even Arthur/Eames/Other or even Eames/Other (particularly another Inception character) please, gimme ALL the fic recs.

73 Yards is a good concept but I think I know the reason it's not gonna stick with me like similar episodes

Spoilers under cut

I called it from the trailer that the old woman would be an older Ruby. The framing alone reminded me of when Amy and Rory see their older selves waving from far away in S5. So knowing that was coming I was hoping the pay off would give me a little bit more to surprise me.

It just didn't. Older Ruby stopped Younger Ruby from doing the thing and the timeliness got fixed. And outside of an odd sense of de ja vue, she nor anyone else remembers what happened.

This a trope I really dislike in time travel stories like this because my feeling is, if the characters aren't going to remember it, why should the audience? It's kinda like the "and it was all a dream" twist. Except even that I don't get as bothered by if the person has grown or changed from having the dream, for example "there's no place like home".

Now compare this to similar episodes where Doctor Who has done stories involving timeliness crossing etc - Blink, the Girl Who Waited and Turn Left. Those all ended with a happy resolution but there were consequences that weren't fully undone. Blink has a ton of people's lives screwed up and 'killed' off screen. The Girl Who Waited manages to save Amy before she can become like old Amy but at the cost of old Amy sacrificing herself and the trauma she went through, and the effect that has on the Doctor and Rory who have to carry on knowing what happened. Turn Left has Donna stopping herself making the wrong choice and resetting things but it's implied that an actual parallel world was created from Donna's first choice that still existed and also she keeps some memories from that world, which also carry on into the series finale. I'll also mention Heaven Sent because there you have the Doctor going through this massive trauma for billions of years but it keeps getting reset and he only remembers a little bit each time. Except even then he is partly aware there are other versions of him before and after who are continuing this struggle and he has to carry that with him into Hell Bent.

73 Yards could end up linking into more stories later on but as it stands, that journey that Ruby went on all those years and what she had to go through is essentially erased. Maybe there will be a lingering sensation for her like a bad dream but I suspect Russel is going to want this to be his new Midnight and not answer any questions ever. Which is fine, I love that about Midnight. But while we didn't get answers about Midnight, we still had the Doctor having to remember what happened and being scarred from it. In 73 Yards we get neither answers nor consequences so it just leaves me shrugging my shoulders, like okay that was a thing.

Was beautifully shot though and the first part where Ruby is just in Wales was really chilling, it's when they took the story back to London it lost me.

I think the meaning of being pro ship has changed in more modern fandom spaces. originally it meant what you explained in the comments of your last post, being anti censorship, or to me it’s like the shipping version of “art is there to disturb the comforted and comfort the disturbed” where it should exist in certain media for those who want to feel understood in there experience, but not for a media that it isn’t for. Like, I don’t want to watch a found family kids series only to find out people are shipping the two sibling characters, so I’d DNI it. But in more modern times people are only really calling themselves pro shippers not because there anti censorship, but because they enjoy mostly creepy ships, and then there was the whole “pro” in pro ship means problematic?? I know it’s not I just still find it dumb. But it ended up changing peoples whole vue on what it meant.

Anyway I’m sorry this is a long ask I just wanted to explain that I wouldn’t use the the term even though I’m anti censorship just because I know the term has a very different connotation in modern fandom spaces and that’s what people put a DNI on for

I’m aware of the discourse surrounding the term. Frankly though? I was here first. Proshippers invented the word, it means what we say it means. The other guys have comship or whatever if they want to specify that they ship the more controversial stuff. And even if you are using it to mean “problematic ships” good fucking luck drawing that line. The number of times I’ve seen somebody with a proship DNI shipping something that I went ??? at is pretty high. Like if I had a nickel for every time I saw somebody with a proship DNI shipping some dude with the guy that MURDERED him I would have a frankly alarming amount of nickels. Or like over in Hannibal fandom the primary ship (my ship as a matter of fact) is Hannigram, which is absolutely full of manipulation and violence, but people still want to say “proship DNI”. You’re shipping the problematic ships honey. None of you are free from sin.

And that isn’t even taking into account that when plenty of people say proship DNI, they mean you the person, not the blog with the objectionable content. The number of times somebody blocked me for not having a problem with some other dude is also alarmingly high.

I wrote a really negative rant post about All For the Game fanfic, so I want to write a positive one. I really do love this fandom, and it’s fanfics, and I want to share the love as well.

By category, here are some fics I love.

Time Travel

Once More by AkemiAsh I just call this The All For The Game Time Travel Fic in my head. It has a really interesting take on Neil and Andrew going back in time all the way to high school. It will probably never be finished, but I still love rereading it.

One More Time (With Feeling) by elesary All of elesary's fics are wonderful and there are several on this list. Many are unfinished, and though the author tends to update a new chapter every week, they rotate between fics. So if you don't like unfinished fics, this is not the one for you. However, if you want a time travel fic with Neil and Andrew going back to their first year at Palmetto, with really interesting characterization and relationship dynamics, this is the fic for you.

Amnesia

Back To The Start by fuzzballsheltiepants There's a lot of fuzzballsheltiepants on this list because they're an absolutely brilliant writer. You can't go wrong with any of their fics. Please note that they are locked though, so you will need an AO3 account to view them.

Muscle Memory by elesary Andrew wakes up in the hospital with no memory of the past few years. It's incredibly in-character and wonderful.

Presque Vue by elesary Neil wakes up in the hospital with no memory of anything since Andrew drugged him at Eden's. Really interesting start! Unfinished so far.

Raven!Neil

Black As the Raven Is, He’ll Get a Partner by nekojita I think this counts as a fandom classic, but it's my favorite Raven!Neil fic so I had to mention it anyway. The Ravens find Neil after he turns down the Foxes' offer to play at Palmetto and he is a Raven from the beginning of his college career. Featuring Neil & Jean friendship and really, really slow-burn Andreil. Mind the warnings for graphic violence and rape (I think it's slightly worse than canon)

Ever More Raven Neil (series) by ynnon this is a recent series where Neil goes to Evermore for Christmas and never leaves. It has two complete installments thus far but the series is technically unfinished. It is one of the most original takes on Raven!Neil I have ever seen and the writing is spectacular. I can't recommend it enough.

Neil’s Asexuality

Swinging Along the Z Axis by SpangleBangle Neil and Andrew discuss what attraction is like for Neil.

Sliding Doors by Moth2Flame Neil and Andrew never kiss during their time at Palmetto. Neil and Robin figure out their asexuality together, and Neil and Andrew get together years later.

The Test & All The Little Lights by fuzzballsheltiepants The first fic really focuses on Andrew, the second on Neil. I call this the "Willing vs. Want To" fic in my head and think it's a really interesting exploration of asexuality (particularly in the second installment).

Random Andreil

Not Nothing by TheRainbowElectric Possibly the most brilliant AFTG fic in existence. I cannot hype it up enough. Seriously, just go read it.

Except When It’s No by TheRainbowElectric The one where they try handcuffs and it goes badly. Based off Nora’s extra content.

Out of the Ashes by puddlejumper99 Neil and Andrew meet pre-canon when, after his mother’s death, Neil starts attending high school in Columbia instead of Millport.

A Mewment Like This by fuzzballsheltiepants I'm usually not the biggest fan of AUs, but this one is wonderful. Andrew and Neil meet at the vet because they both have cats with stupid names. It might sound fluffy, and it is clever and funny, but it also explores some of the darker themes and character development that happen in the books.

if every time we touch, you get this kind of rush by Talls This fic has Andrew and Matt kissing (still with Andreil and Matt/Dan as the main ships) and it sounds absolutely insane but just trust me, you have to read it. This is also possibly the best-written makeout scene I have ever read in my life.

is Romeo and Juliet’s romance overhyped ?

Because I am still not over talking about a certain webtoon i had too see more articles with takes like this, you know the type of « its a satire i am so smart I outsmarted the writers » type of thing

Regardless let’s ask ourselves why some people might think its an overated romance rather than try to answer the question straight because imo it would help understand more why the play gets some of these criticism

In that post i went on and on about the play’s status as a love story, however keeping in mind how the term has evolved to be more of a synonym with romance maybe we can answer that

most of the times in contemporary media romance tends to be slow burn where the characters develop feeling for one another as the story progress regardless of them feeling attraction or not on their first meeting, its something that is develop throughout regardless of the lenght of the media this romance pertains to be it a whole show, a movie, the whole series or a short story, and regardless of whether its the main conflict or not, because its a conflict we generally expect some times for the relationship to flourish so that it feels earned

in this aspect I could see why some would look at RomiJuri falling in love immediately and marry quick and think its overhyped because of this : it happens so fast and easily that it doesnt feel earned

the issue with this criticism however is that, as i have already said in the past, it misunderstands the point of what the play is trying to be and reduce the possibility of romance and love story to modern conceptions of love

if you look at past stories the concept of love at first sight is very common and even if nowadays we prefer slow burn romance this still remains via the topos of « la scène de vue » but we have to consider that when criticizing a work, you have to understand the contemporary vision of that time to understand where the author is comming from

furthermore RomiJuri is not meant to be a slow burn romance and thinking every love story ever written adheres to the idea that it is by writing a slow burn romance that you create a compelling romance is missing the trees for the forest, and to be frank when i see some people complain about this aspect of the play I am genuinely wondering how they came to the expectations that the play would be a slow burn romance when its a story about two lovers dying, maybe I am biased because I did knew some stuff about the play before I read it in middle school but I am confused to see that to some RomiJuri being labelled a love story somehow equals slow burn romance, and again i cant speak for others cultures but at least I know that in Europe the tale is known as to be the « most tragic love story » not as being the best one so I have to question : when they mean that the romance is overated are they talking about it being hyped as being the best romance or the most tragic romance because those are two different things. One is mainly hyped by pop culture which is champion number 1 in misrepresenting things especially regarding literature however this same pop culture also regularly poke fun at RomiJuri so dont think you are revoluntionary in thinking the play is stupid because it uses love at first sight or try to claim its a « satire ». The latter however is generally the thing i hear most when people talk about the play and what got this pair to be famous, which even echoes to the end of the play « For never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo » and that’s because it did earned its reputation in that regard : two kids fall in love but they are from rival family and cant be together and the actions of said family ends up leading to their demise, what about it doesnt scream « most tragic romance » ?

obviously in non western culture, the « most tragic romance » isnt going to be Romeo and Juliet. In the middle east its generaly Layla and al Majun, in Far east its the Butterfly lovers etc. But in the West at least it is considered the most tragic to the point it is what coined the « star crossed lover » term to design the archetypes of the unfortunate couple

so that was for the first part as for the second which I think many people seems to forget is the idea of fatality being prevalent in the play because its a tragedy… actually I think I can scrap the « because it a tragedy », fate was a prevalent notion in literature in general and it still is today as proven by the success of villainess story where the MC has to change the course of fate and yadi yada

The play makes it abundantely clear that Romeo and Juliet falling in love at first sight is a result of fate, not only do we have Romeo talking about a having a bad feeling about this when going to the capulet party, but we also have the characters constantly blame the circumstances around them or Fortune and the stars themselves

this was already the case in the pre- Shakespeare version as well because the point of Romeo and Juliet is that they are fate’s fools : from their meeting to their end, it was all because of fate playing them like puppet on a string and their attempt at defy destiny ends badly. Now regarding the « fast wedding » which is in reality Juliet wanting to assure herself of the sincerity of Romeo’s feelings. To people familiar with the previous versions written by Da porto, Bandello and Brooke you are probably aware of that fact but for those who don’t : these version all have the common point of Romeo and Juliet falling in love at first sight, courting one another for weeks, deciding to get married upon Juliet urging it and then living an happily married life for month until Tybalt shenanigans get in the way

one might wonder why Shakespeare reduced this month long relationship to a week long but the answer is kinda obvious. A play doesnt have the same pacing as short stories or a lenghty narrative poem, in plays the action tends to be much faster paced because they follow a 3 act structure and that everything needs to be wrapped up in 5 acts. Short story and poems have the possibility to be as long as they want to and thus the actions can last for month but for theater especially considering the influence of Aristotles’s works on tragedy, resulted in plays being limited to plot lasting at most for a couple of days at least in other European country because in French play the whole action last for ONE day and the writers didnt had the right to go beyond 24 hour or else they would get in the same troubles as Corneille did

the reason why Shakespeare choose to write it as a tragedy rather than a tragic story compared to the previous versions is specifically because of the tragic fuel that stems from the impact fate has on their lives

before the story was a tragedy in the informal sense aka a story with a tragic ending but Shakespeare turned it into a formal tragedy as in tragedy in its authentic definition as a genre of play

by the way this distinction between tragedy and tragic stories (informal tragedy) extends to many things including love stories : not all love story are romance after all, therefore expecting a love story to follow the same conventions as romance let alone modern romance is disregarding this nuance

Lastly this focus on slow burn seems to miss on the effort out into the plays in regard to the writing

let me elaborate : if you read Da Porto, Bandello or Brooke’s versions, the relationship does take more time yes, however because these writers have to cover a long period of time and that their focus isnt the romance but the tragic fate of the lovers, the use many many ellipses not to mention that the involvement of an omniscient narrator reduce the intimacy and engagement you can have and as a result despite being longer the relationship is less fleshed out than in the play

the thing is that Shakespeare is very aware that he has to reduce the amount of time in his plot, therefore the believibility or versimilitude of the play depends heavily on how he will rely the on language to solve the following paradox : how can he manage to make is root for the tragic romance knowing that unlike his predecessor he has to write all of this in a plot that cannot last more than a few days ?

this is WHAT built Romeo and Juliet’s reputation : not the slow burn but the use of language to support it, that is WHAT is most discussed in academics field to hell and back and thats’ specifcally because its the part of the play that got the most worked upon and is subject of endless commentaries

what gives substance to a work is its use of language and being sensitive to it is essential to understand why its Romeo and Juliet who got the prestige of most tragic couple in western literature

thats is throught the way Romeo and Juliet speak we are invested in their romance

Its essential to understand that because this is the use of language that allows for the characters to elevate beyond simple archetype and to be rounded and fleshed out yet when i see articles that claim to criticizes the play they completely disregard that and offers interpretations that are very unlikely without even backing it up with textual evidences

and this is precisely because of that mindest we have takes such as « Juliet shouldnt have any reason to complain about marrying Paris he is better than Romeo » when we are talking about a man who is older than both Romeo and Juliet whereas the two tends to be in the same range of age, a man who aslo tells her on their first proper discussions stuff like « they face is mine » whereas a close inspections of Romeo’s way of talking to and about Juliet makes it clear that he would never

its one thing to dislike the play but here its media literacy that is in play : the hyperfocus on plot and disregard to language when it comes to a literary work, something that spefically stand out for its usage of language, is terrifying when this is the main factor of 99% of the literary canon even existing

criticism is important but its very easy to see when someone make disgenous criticism and in the case of Romeo and Juliet arguing its an overhyped romance because they fall in love too fast when the struggle of the play was never about them getting in a relationship but about them having to deal with many misfortune leading to their death its a prime example of missing the point

their relationship doesnt feel earned because you have to wait for at least 400 episodes before they get together or years in universe for them to be a couple, their relationship feels earned because of the way its written as in the use of language and poetry in service of the relationship, which is more essential to building something that screentime is

If you want to argue that Romeo and Juliet dont deserved to be so popular then the writing as in the poetics of the play should be what you criticize not the fact their relationship is « rushed » , even though the whole challenge of the play is trying to write a compelling relationship when relying on a limited time for the two to meet and fall in love

and again i cannot stress is enough Romeo and Juliet’s popularity and reputation lies in them by martyr because that’s what the play tried to achieve : make them martyr for their love and their death having one good effect one Verona by stopping the feud has been seen in a more optimistic view as veing the victory of love over hatred. It has never been because they were seen as the best couple ever but as the most pitiful one, thats’ the whole point of the archetype regardless of which version and which couple it involved
