#WHEN WILL HYO REUNITE THEM

Note
“NO!”
Send “NO!” to watch my muse get fatally stabbed.
Jae-hyo was no longer a Turk; he had snatched his freedom as the world collapsed around them. All the lies had revealed themselves and when the dust cleared, Tseng had lost another Turk.
He couldn't blame him; especially not now that his life was so clearly his own choice. Before Meteor, before Sephiroth's attempt to destroy everything, there was no path out of the Turks that was not one of death. Now, at the Edge of everything, with the company in pieces, he knew he could leave. Rufus wouldn't kill him for it.
He knew he could leave. He didn't.
But Jae had, and so contact had been limited these past few years. Tseng kept an eye on his illicit activities but they were no threat to their own operation. All Tseng could truly give him was distance - if he did not wish to be a Turk, then Tseng wouldn't involve him.
Things had been getting better; after the lingering Remnants of Sephiroth's power had been dealt with... He'd been adjusting to his new arm, he'd been watching the Turks begin to flourish again. He'd seen Elena and Emma reunite, maybe now they could finally get along.. Rufus's health had been much improved and now it seemed as if he had never gotten sick.
Things were going well.
And that meant that it all had to end.
Things never got to stay good for long.
Tumblr media
Even with things improving, there were plenty of people who held grudges. The Turks and Rufus were the last true remnants of ShinRa and even if Rufus was only the inheritor of all that came before him, people still hated all of them for the horrors ShinRa had been committing for years. People knew the Turks now; they were recognisable... Sometimes things got dangerous.
He'd seen Jae-hyo arguing with someone, could hear words like ShinRa and atrocities. It wasn't a rare sight, though Tseng tried to deter his people from engaging. He'd begun to approach when he noticed another figure, coming in from behind Jae. This was, technically, an issue between civilians and it wasn't his place to get involved - especially not with any force. But he noticed a glint of metal.
He moved quickly.
The knife that had been aimed for Jae's kidney buried itself in Tseng's stomach as he moved between them. Even with the blade still in him, he was able to shoot the attacker in the head - point blank - an explosion of gore and sound that managed to scare off his accomplice.
His knees hit the ground, hard, and he stayed there for a moment like that as blood stained his white shirt. There was too much of it... He was bleeding too quickly..
"Jae..." Talking hurt, but he had always been good at enduring pain. "My phone is in my pants pocket. Please let Rufus... Or Reno know..."
Always focused on his duty.
Once upon a time, even a fatal wound could be dealt with but he'd lost his precious materia years ago. How many times had Tseng faced death? How many times had other people saved his life? His life had only ever been extended by the people around him, he had lived with such deep debt... Perhaps this was how he paid it, to save another.
"Don't worry... Jae.. It's alright... I always hoped I'd die protecting one of mine..."

My thoughts on... Encounter
Tumblr media
Song Hye Kyo as Cha Soo Hyeon and Park Bo Gum as Kim Jin Hyeok From the writer of the movie Always (Han Hyo Joo, So Ji Sub) and the director of Lovestruck in the City and It's Okay to Not be Okay, Encounter (aka Boyfriend) is a 2018 romance drama about a divorced woman and Donghwa Hotel CEO, Cha Soo Hyeon, finding love in the form of the young and joyful Kim Jin Hyeok, one of her hotel's employees, after a magical chance encounter in Cuba. At first glance, this may seem like a simple role reversal on this well-established and cliché storyline but allow me to suggest Encounter is a little more than that.
Multiple layers of storytelling
Encounter makes use of and combines all the tools in its arsenal to tell its story from its opening shot, that briefly gives us a grayscale visual overview of Soo Hyeon's life, always following her back, careful to hide her face, transitioning to color in the present and showing us the first of several artworks to be depicted in this show, artworks that will be used to follow our protagonists' journey throughout. Already this opening shot has succeeded in laying the groundwork for Soo Hyeon's character and personality; she's the daughter of a politician who was married off to a wealthy and powerful family, suggesting she has had little agency to decide over the course of her life. Similar visual storytelling is used to set up Jin Hyeok, happily wandering around Cuba in a straight shirt/jeans getup with an old camera in hand to capture the joy in everyday life, chancing on an old but beautifully kept garden that marked the beginning of another couple's love story.
Tumblr media
A fairy tale art journey
Another directing choice that sets this drama apart is how it lets scenes breathe and flow, allowing us to fully take in what's transpiring in a way that lets us feel as if we're right there with the actors, silently accompanying them, what lends it part of that air of reality and believability. The show is not afraid of letting long silences and awkward pauses into its storytelling, like when Soo Hyeon and Jin Hyeok meet at the Hongje-Dong playground in Episode 2 and an uncomfortable silence fills the air after they've ran out of the proper things to say to each other. A different kind of silence, the stillness of a breaking day, is interrupted only by the soothing sound of the waves in Episode 3, as Jin Hyeok is getting coffee while Soo Hyeon sits on a bench staring at the sea.
In fact, Encounter never feels pressured into featuring a song to convey the meaning or feelings behind a scene, favouring its cinematography and/or dialogue, at times coupled with ambient sounds and noises or light, unobtrusive and beautiful instrumental tracks such as I Never Knew, Love Birds or The Evenfall, among others. It's a refreshing choice in a landscape that often feels the need to hit you over the head with songs that proclaim LOVE IS THE MOMENT at every opportunity (Run!). This is not to say there aren't songs featured prominently and recurrently in the show, the most obvious being our couple's theme, "Si llego a besarte" by Omara Portuondo, a song that has a knack for reuniting our two lovers, in one case reminding me of a scene from the movie Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. And, of course, SALTNPAPER feels right at home in this show with the melancholic "Take Me On."
Tumblr media
The show rewards us with such beautiful postcards These factors succeed at creating a peaceful, soothing atmosphere while watching the show, a feeling that betrays the underlying current of tension, a result of company and family politics, and perhaps most subtly and wonderfully conveyed by Song Hye Kyo's character, who struggles with how far she should, or is allowed to, take her "some" relationship with Jin Hyeok, what leads me to...
Believable and supportive relationships between characters
Encounter is all about Jin Hyeok's and Soo Hyeon's relationship, there are no second leads to prompt unnecessary love triangles in lieu of actual character development. There are certainly a bunch of supporting characters and we witness how they relate to our leads in their day-to-day life.
For instance, Jin Hyeok's circle of friends is comprised of Dae Chan and Hye In and already from the beginning of Episode 2 we see how tight they are as they celebrate his return from Cuba over drinks and joke about Hye In's love life. Hye In has a bit of a crush on Jin Hyeok but she's always clear on where the boundaries lie and puts their friendship first, as certain events over the course of the show will prove. Soo Hyeon has a similar circle of friends in the form of her secretary, Jang Mi Jin, who often nags and complains, doubly so when Soo Hyeon starts taking bigger risks with her love life, but is also looking out for her in her own way.
Also in Soo Hyeon's circle is Manager "Teddy Bear" Myung Shik, a close friend of her dad who has kept an eye on her throughout her life and is delighted at being able to play Cupid for our couple, much to Secretary Jang's annoyance. His antics provide much welcome levity from time to time and it's always a treat to see him on screen, be it having a beer with Sun Joo, a friend from his reporter days and Donghwa Hotel's PR Team Manager, being outwitted by the sharp wit of Sun Joo's daughter, or trying to find a mask that fits for a masquerade ball. In fact, many, perhaps most, of the people in Jin Hyeok's and Soo Hyeon's lives have amicable or friendly relationships with them, even if some are less keen on showing it. The show has several examples of how the hotel's staff respects Soo Hyeon's leadership and even looks out for her at times, what is understandable given her calm and understanding demeanor when dealing with staff, her commitment to the Donghwa brand and overall professionalism. Having said that, there's always people who like to gossip... but no spoilers!
Tumblr media
Manager Teddy Bear takes a break after playing Cupid Curiously, the relationships that take the most hits are the ones involving mothers: Soo Hyeon's mom, who aims to place her husband in the Blue House; her former mother-in-law, who schemes to force Soo Hyeon back together with her son; and even Jin Hyeok's mom, who feels uneasy at her family's sudden media exposure. If any of this has triggered warning makjang bells in your brain, allow me to assuage those fears (and if you're a makjang fan, allow me to disappoint), for Encounter makes organic use of these character motivations to generate tension, yes, but not to "amp the drama" in a way that would feel unrealistic or artificial. Crisis never overstay their welcome, in large part because our main leads do something many on-screen couples don't: they communicate. Upon viewing this show for a second time I decided to turn on viewer comments and encountered the oft-quoted "lack of chemistry" objection. I have a problem with the word "chemistry" despite having used it myself several times, a philosophical objection perhaps. What do we mean when we use a particular word, such as "chemistry" in this case? I gave my (for it is an ultimately subjective answer) tentative definition of "chemistry" between characters in my Hotel del Luna review and suggested it goes beyond steamy kissing scenes (I'll take them if they come my way) and encompasses the extent to which a couple can convey their thoughts and feelings to each other through verbal (dialogue) and nonverbal communication (gestures, gazes, actions), what, in the end, is what sells me or not on the depth of a romantic relationship. It's not just about how hot the characters are for one another, but about being able to understand what your partner is going through and what they need at a given time, be it a hug, a word of comfort, or silent company. Given their backgrounds and personalities it makes complete sense that Jin Hyeok would excel at this with Soo Hyeon finding it more difficult but still having opportunities to shine, such as her bold declaration at the end of Episode 6 or her surprise visit at the end of Episode 9. It was a treat to watch how their relationship slowly matured over time, how they interacted with one another, how Soo Hyeon gradually came out of her shell and took the reins of her life. We must remember that, for both of them, this is their first romantic relationship, if at different moments in their lives.
Closing thoughts
I hope I've been able to accurately convey a few of the reasons why I feel Encounter is such a standout drama, even though I'm probably missing plenty. Curiously, it was my second encounter with both lead actors, having previously watched Song Hye Kyo in the popular Descendants of the Sun and Park Bo Gum in Love in the Moonlight. Personally, this has become my favourite among the three and would probably be among my Top 10. That opening episode in Cuba with Jin Hyeok and Soo Hyeon gazing at the sunset, having a couple of beers and a stroll, enjoying each others' company during their impromptu date, cast a magical spell on me that never let go, right until the end, so it is only fitting I end this review thusly, quoting one of Encounter's many excellent poems.

I just wrote chapter 6 of a fic I started a while ago and decided to post it here and on AO3 since I originally started it there.
The Oh Family
Finally, the Oh sisters were reunited in one country, one city, and only a table seperating them as they caught up while in In Kyung's apartment. The three were left alone to catch up while they had drinks on the table and some snacks. Days prior they arrival to the state Do Il made sure everything will go to plan and so the pick-up from the airport went smoothly; he made arrangements to be picked up at the airport with In Joo and the girls as they landed around the same time, making it easier to surprise In Kyung, who did not know about it at all. Jung Ho was warned about it so that things would go well, so she was shocked when she saw everyone walking in and froze for a bit before grabbing her sisters in her arms, In Joo cried while In Hye remained calm.
The sisters stayed chatting the whole night, enjoying spending time together and leaving all their old worries behind. While they talked, Do Il and Jong Ho decided to cook some food while Hyo Rin finalized the itinerary for the next few days.
The moment was joyful, and they laughed a lot, telling each other's stories of their new lives as well as old moments of their childhood. Even with them being separated in three different continents, it didn’t change that they were sisters, and their bond was stronger than anything. At around 3 am, they decided it was best for all to go to sleep, and they all went to bed. The guests all went to their hotel with the girls in the same room and Do Il in his own room, and the same for In Joo.
In the month after Valentines Day, they had been talking a lot about themselves, about the trip, about their lives, and the future. They grew used to holding hands and gazing at each other longer than necessary when in each other's presence. As they were now in their respective bedrooms, In Joo reflected on the few hours she sat beside Do Il; he made sure she was comfortable during the flight as it was long, gave her gum, got up when safe to walk around the plane telling her it was good for her legs, and holding her hand when she got worried at the landing. She knew deep down she had feelings for him and couldn’t deny it anymore, and her sisters would end up noticing it in the two weeks with her, so she prepared herself for their comments.
The next day, they all decided to eat at a spot which is popular in town before doing some shopping. It all went smoothly, and each of them enjoyed their time. The sisters ended up naturally spending more time together, catching up on all the lost time, and they ended up being glued to one another, especially In Joo not leaving her sisters alone for a moment. In Hye didn’t reject the clinginess and instead accepted being with her. However, the two coupled-up sisters didn’t forget their partners during all this and still talked with them, even kissing, as In Kyung was not one to shy away from public displays of affection to her boyfriend. In Hye, on the other hand, was much more reserved and showed her affection to her girlfriend by sharing food or sitting beside her. Being the only single left, the oldest didn’t let that affect her much and enjoyed her time, though she got heart palpitations when she was close to Do Il, and he talked to her, explaining to her that he went there when he was a student or some random historical fact, and she had to try her best to listen and not just stare at him.
The next few days, they visited New York and Chicago, which was all nice since it was the first time they even got to travel so much together and ended up taking a few pictures together. In Joo especially feared that after all these events, her relationship with In Hye would be torn, and they wouldn’t remain close, especially since the teenager decided to move so far away, but the last few days showed her that they could still manage to be there for one another.
They are now visiting San Francisco The morning In Kyung spoke with her younger sister they have a plan she take care of talking to In Joo while In Hye goes to talk with Do Il to straighten things up. Later in the day while the others are enjoying the view of the bridge, In Kyung grabs her older sister by the elbow to drag her back so they can speak privately, as they are not alone most of the time. In Joo lets out a yelp as she is suddenly moved but is shushed by her sister's stern look.
“Unnie, what are you playing at with Do Il! When are either one of you actually going to make a move? This is making me lose my mind, seeing you two awkwardly stare at one another all the time!” In Kyung finally lets it out, feeling her blood boil because neither are making a move.
“It’s not that easy; we are having a good time, but I don’t know. I just like him and don’t want to ruin everything,” In Joo sighs because she likes, no she loves, that man, but she wasn’t one to ask out a guy.
“Gosh, so I am supposed to just suffer for the rest of the trip?!” The middle sister groans hearing this and decides to walk again as she sees no point in persuading her sister to be more flirty.
On the other side, while Do Il is taking pictures, he doesn’t notice In Hye leaning against the small wall and then looking at his face. The teenager sighs and then clears her throat to catch his attention.
“You know, if you never ask Unnie out, you two will never end up together, right?” She looks at him with the same neutral face she always has on clearly she means it.
“I know just didn’t want to ruin your reunion but I promise I am really serious about In Joo” Do Il startled not expecting this especially from the young girl but her words slap him in the face like the cold wind is currently doing.
“We really don’t mind it especially In Kyung she getting so frustrated with you two and this odd situation” In Hye shake her head and then turn her head toward the water.
“Would it be fine then for me to take In joo on a date tonight?” Do Il say because suddenly knowing both sisters actually were supporting the idea of him dating In Joo gave him a boost of confidence.
“No problems at all none of us will be stopping that” She look back at him and then give him a small smile before walking back toward her girlfriend.
In the evening Do Il managed to book a table last minutes at one of the best restaurent in town with a beautiful view of the city and made sure In Joo wore a nice dress and had her makeup and her done with the help of her sisters as she wore a red dress and her hair tie up in a bun. Do Il putted on a nice black suit and had a necklace in his pocket. As they sat down and drunk some wine and talked for a bit Do Il decide was perfect time for it.
“In Joo I have something to say I want to know if you agreed for me to be your boyfriend?” He asked her as he placed the rectangular box on the table and looked her into the eyes trying to stay brave.
“Of course yes” In Joo giggle happily and open the box and see a beautiful silver necklace with pearls attached to it
“I am really happy you agree to do this In Joo “ He smile and get up to place the necklace around her neck and after closing it he place a kiss on her cheek.
In Joo blush at the sensation of his soft lips on her skin but she then giggle as she looks at him once he sit back on his chair. They spend the rest of the evening enjoying their food and then once done he walks her back to her hotel room smile at her before waving her goodnight.
The next day they are already going to a new cities but In Joo can’t help feeling like a teenager because she is officially with Do Il and it makes her more confident now not feeling like she was being insane having feeling for him and wanting to spend her whole day with him. She walk up t him while their visiting the city center and taking some pictures and he then stop in front of a shop about to call her to go with him but when he notice she already next to him he grins and wrap his arm around her waist walking in wth her.
“I hope you don’t mind I told my sisters we are dating” She say as she look at his face while his hand remain on her waist
“Not at all I actually like it that they know we are official” Do Il shake his head and look at the item in the store while he continue to hold her close to him.
In Joo look at his side profil before looking at the items in the shop and decide to buy herselves a few bracelets. Do Il let her grabs the thing she want and get a scarf for his mother and then heads to the counter to pay for everything even for In Joo things wanted to treat her. The rest of the day goes smoothly and so everyone goes back to their own hotel room. In Joo decide after taking a shower and putting on the prettiest pyjama she got a pink set and her hair all brushed to knock on her boyfriend bedroom door wanting to see for a little bit more. Do Il open the door he already showered and so wearing his pyjama set black and made of coton.
Hey you need something?” He smile looking at In Joo and then open the door wider to let her in
“No nothing just wanted to spend more time with you” In Joo shake her head smiling and then get into the bedroom
“Already this attached to me?” He tease her as he close the door and then place his hand on her lower back guiding her to the armchair.
“Can’t I simply want to just see you?” In Joo chuckles a little embarrassed by his teasing and then let his hand guide her until she sit on the armchair
“I like the idea thought you being enamored with me” Do Il smile and then grab the desk chair to drag it so he can sit in front of her and then take her hands in his.
In Joo shyly sight as he hold her hands feeling her cheeks burning a little but continue to hold his hands while he look at her. Do Il look at her and then interlock his fingers with her enjoying the silence between and notice when his girlfriend regain her composture and look back at his face and so great her with a soft smile.
“In Joo you know I was actually planning to ask you out once we would been back to Korea but your sister kind off made me understand I had best interest to do it now.” Do Il spoke softly and then let out a chuckle because was clear In Joo sister were not the patient type
“I am sorry you felt pressured to do that Do Il” She say a little embarrassed that he got forced to rush it.
“Not at all actually I am glad they woke because honestly I am glad I did it because now I can do this” Do Il shake his head smiling and then lean a little closer to her and kiss her cheek softly
In Joo get a little flustered by it but then let go of his hands to cup his face looking into his eyes before her fingers trail to the nape of his neck. Do Il stare at her feeling her fingers in his hair and one of his hands on the armrest of her chair so he doesn’t lean too much into her and his other hand gently caressing her arm. They both remain like this for a while just staring into the other eyes like they gaze can’t resist but remain like this. After a bit thought Do Il being the resonable man he is decide to lean back a little while his hands rest on her wrist and In Joo hands remain in his hair.
“In Joo I totally get it that because of past experience might need more time with certain things and I will be wanting you know until you ready for any step of the relation.” He say wanting to reassure her since they are in his bedroom and didn’t want her to get the wrong idea.
“I was married before thought I mean you don’t need to treat me like I am clueless about it “In Joo say as she slowly remove her hands from him and sight a little bothered by his words.
“No that’s not what I meant  just that I am fine with just holding your hands and all that like I know you not clueless but doesn’t mean either I expect you to be fine just doing everything” Do Il shake his head and then caress her cheek correcting himself since he knew she isn’t some clueless woman.
“Just that sometimes I fear you think I might be stupid compare to you because I mean you got to live abroad and studied.” In Joo eyes soften as he caress her face.
“I would never think that of you because you are not stupid you smart and caring and just because i lived abroad and studied doesn’t make me smarter after all I spend most of my life entangled into shady business. “Do Il rub her cheek with his thumb disagreing with her statement.
“Still I feel like you never would had been interested in me if it wasn’t for all that” She say because he himself told once he might never had meet her
If not for this then would meet you for something else I am sure of it because if not my life would be  dreadful witheout you I can’t think of spending a single not in your precense.” He say as he continue to stare into her eyes and his thumb caressing her cheek.
“I can’t help thought feeling sometimes we are so mismatched thought.” In Joo say hearing her boyfriend sweet words and her hands goes on his shoulders.
“That’s what is good thought we both so different yet compliment one an other so swell.” Do Il smile at her and then cup her face.
“But you said you wanted to settle down thought later on thought and that’s why you came back to Korea.” In Joo said couldn’t but still not fully accepting it all.
“I came back to Korea for you because I knew that if I didn’t come back and try to make it work with you I would be the biggest idiot on this earth. “Do Il whisper a little amused she is still arguing.
“You did? I didn’t know I mean that you felt that way toward me.” She say surprised because he never thought he felt so strongly toward her before he left for Greece.
“That’s the problem see me keeping my feelings hidden because then you think I didn’t love you “Do Il chuckle and tilt his head a little making his breath brush against her cheek
In Joo naturally lean her head a little more closer and her hands back in his hair while she nod. Both face close to an other a few centimers seperating their lips and tension building between the two. Do Il tries to not make his fingers tremble while he caress her face but she makes him so nervous more nervous then when he was in danger for his life. In Joo play with his hair and then her eyes are half lidded as she keep her gaze on him which make Do Il hearth jump out of his chest. He decide too much with this all and so sight before caressing her face thinking against his whole plan which was to take it extra slow.
“In Joo don’t feel pressured but if you are comfortable with it could I perhaps kiss you?” He whisper hoping not to scare her off as he continue to caress her skin.
“Yes of course” She softly blush remaining on her cheeks but so glad he finally asked it.
Do Il smile and then close his eyes before leaning his face closer and finally pressing his lips agaisnt hers. He gently kiss her making sure to leave space between their body while he cup her face. His girlfriend respond to the kiss as gently as he does and caress the back of his head enjoying the kiss for a moment before pulling away and staring at his face. After a moent In Joo take his hands in hers.
“Can I stay to sleep in your bedroom? I mean I just want to lay beside you that’s all” She say a little shyly hoping he doesn’t expect more
That’s completly fine with me I am happy being close to you” Do Il smile happy of her offer and kiss her forehead before getting up from the chair and then take her hand to help her up.
In Joo nods and then goes in his bed laying on one side while she glance back at her boyfriend, he come to the other side and then gently take her hand in his while they lay under then blanket and then smile at her while he peck her lips a last time before closing his eyes. In Joo smile and turn around to lay on her side and face him and then close her eyes sleeping while still holding his hands.

Send ♡ to see what my muse thinks of yours [ACCEPTING] LOW | ●●●●● | HIGH
●●●●● | ATTRACTION
Incredibly so. Jae-hyo loves to be a proper gentleman and Vanya's classic Hollywood glamour is extremely appealing to him. Not to mention all the other fun aspects of her personality, like being a diva, her insatiable bloodlust- It just hits all the right buttons!
●●●●○ | AFFECTION
Very high. Jae normally isn't the type to be jealous to begin with, but I also think he'd look at Ivan and Volgin's dynamic and think it's disgustingly cute. Plus Vanya was born to be pampered and spoiled and honestly, isn't that what she DESERVES?
●●●○○ | INTEREST The interest is there, but I also feel like they probably established their dynamic quite quickly and stuck to it, if that makes sense? Like there's a comfortable routine there, and disrupting it would make what they have more uncertain- So it's a precarious balancing act. Jae both wants to know more about her over time, but also why ruin a good thing by pushing it.
●○○○○ | LOYALTY
This is a bit tricky- He is loyal to himself, first and foremost to begin with and always will be. If Vanya told him not to do something, normally he would not do the thing, but if it starts to go against his principles or what he feels is necessary for his mission or survival, he'd probably lie to reassure her and then do the thing anyway if it benefits him/them the most. Whereas Vanya loses his reason for living when Volgin dies, when Jae is lead to believe Vanya's dead, he IS angry and upset- But he doesn't suddenly take up arms to avenge them or try to continue whatever semblance of a legacy she and Volgin may have had, he simply cuts his losses and disappears- Reducing the scope of his attention back to pure survival.
●●●○○ | TRUST
Jae dislikes feeling vulnerable in general, but somehow being around her I feel would relax him enough to start being more okay with smaller intimacies. I think it'd take Vanya making that step first and sharing a bit more if she wants, but the gesture would make Jae reconsider what exactly he feels towards her and respond accordingly. They would probably get more opportunity to increase this trust and bond more once they reunite.

However, there are some hints and clues that suggest that the beloved webtoon-based K-drama might come back for more. First of all, Kang Full has other works related to ‘Moving’, such as ‘Timing’ and ‘Bridge’, which feature some of the same characters and expand the universe of superpowered people. In fact, in one of the episodes of ‘Moving’, a character from ‘Timing’ made a cameo appearance. He is Kim Young Tak, a student of Choi Il Hwan who has the ability to stop time. Rumors have it that he might join ‘Moving’ Season 2, and that he might be played by actor Yoo Seung Ho. Secondly, the finale of ‘Moving’ left some loose ends and unanswered questions that could set up the plot for a potential sequel. For example, who is Elias, the mysterious man who looks exactly like Frank, the American agent who was killed by Ju Won? Is he Frank’s twin brother, or a clone? And what is his mission in Korea? Moreover, what will happen to the National Intelligence Service (NIS) after the death of its director, Mr. Min? It seems that agent Ma Sang Gu, played by Park Byung Eun, has taken over his position. But can he be trusted? And what about Shin Hye Won, the high-ranking official who turned out to be an old acquaintance of Jang Hee Soo? She seems to have a special power that prevents her from aging. What is her role in the NIS and its plans for the gifted ones? And finally, what will become of our main trio: Kim Doo Shik, Lee Mi Hyun, and Kim Bong Seok? They managed to survive the final battle at Jeongwon High School and reunite with their friends and families. But they are still in danger from those who want to exploit their powers or eliminate them. Will they be able to live normal lives, or will they have to fight again?
When Will ‘Moving’ Season 2 Be Released?
Tumblr media
(Photo : Ryu Seung Ryong Instagram) If ‘Moving’ Season 2 gets a green light from Disney+ and Kang Full, it might take some time before it hits our screens. The first season of ‘Moving’ began filming in late August of 2021 and finished in early September of 2023. That means it took almost two years to complete the production of 20 episodes. Considering the amount of work and resources involved in creating such a high-quality show, we can expect a similar timeline for ‘Moving’ Season 2. That means we might not see it until late 2025 or early 2026. Of course, this is just an estimate based on the previous schedule. There might be some delays or changes due to various factors, such as the availability of the cast and crew, the COVID-19 pandemic situation, or other unforeseen circumstances.
What Can We Expect From ‘Moving’ Season 2?
Tumblr media
(Photo : Disney Plus Korea) If ‘Moving’ Season 2 becomes a reality, we can expect it to continue the story of Kang Full’s webtoon and explore more aspects of his rich and complex world. We might see more characters from his other works, such as ‘Timing’ and ‘Bridge’, as well as new ones with different powers and backgrounds. We might also learn more about the origin and nature of these powers, and how they are related to politics and science. How did these people get their abilities in the first place? Was it an accident or an experiment? And who is behind it? We might also witness more action scenes and battles between the gifted ones and their enemies, such as the NIS, the CIS (Central Intelligence Service), or other organizations that want to use them or get rid of them. How will they protect themselves and their loved ones from these threats? And last but not least, we might see more development and romance between the main characters, especially Doo Shik and Mi Hyun, who finally confessed their feelings for each other in the finale. Will they be able to stay together, or will they face more obstacles and challenges?
What Do Fans Think About ‘Moving’ Season 2?
Tumblr media
(Photo : Disney+, Yoo Seung Ho Instagram) Fans of ‘Moving’ are eagerly waiting for the announcement of ‘Moving’ Season 2, and they have expressed their love and support for the show on social media. Here are some of their comments: I just finished watching Moving and I’m speechless. It was such a masterpiece. The story, the acting, the effects, everything was perfect. I hope there will be a season 2 because I need more of this amazing show. #Moving Moving is hands down the best K-drama I’ve ever seen. It had everything: action, drama, comedy, romance, suspense, and more. The cast was phenomenal and the chemistry was off the charts. I’m so sad it’s over, but I’m also hopeful for a season 2. Please make it happen, Disney+ and Kang Full! #Moving Moving was a roller coaster ride of emotions. It made me laugh, cry, scream, and cheer. It was so well-written and well-directed. The characters were so relatable and lovable. I’m so proud of them for surviving and finding happiness. But I also want to see more of their adventures and struggles in season 2. Please don’t let this be the end! #Moving
Conclusion

Hyori Lee, Meet Cookie… "If you're happy, that's it."
Tumblr media
Singer Lee Hyo-ri reunited with her ideal type Cookie.
In the final episode of tvN's entertainment program 'Check In Canada', which aired on the 21st, Hyo-ri Lee and her friend, Richmond, met Cookie.
On this day in Jeju Island, when Lee Sang-soon was told that the last episode was about Cookie and Tommy, he said, "Cookie hasn't been with us for quite a while. Isn't that the puppy from the 'Check-In Canada' poster?"
Then Lee Hyo-ri said, "That's right. That's a picture Gong-gil unnie took." "It's a program that saved a lot of production costs in many ways. We took all the photos ourselves and made a poster with them. Formality isn't important. Sincerity is important," she smiled. .
Hyo-ri Lee revealed that her ideal dog, Cookie, was "a mix of black and brown," as she recalled the first time they met. He explained the reason why he decided to take temporary shelter, saying, "Cookie went into the shelter in Pocheon City with her mother. I thought someone would adopt her, but no one did."
Hyo-ri Lee said, "It started with me, but many acquaintances took care of it and I spent time in many places." She said that she decided to adopt after receiving a message from Cookie's dog owner. He said, "I received a message saying, 'I fell in love with this puppy at first sight and want to adopt it.' Isn't it amazing?"
Hyori Lee and her friend found the cookie, and they sat still and waited for it to come. However, when Cookie smelled Hyori Lee, she was surprised and ran away. At this, Hyori Lee waited a little longer. Cristina, who actively sent Lee Hyo-ri's intention to adopt her, is temporarily in Spain.
While Christina waited for Cookie for a long time, she communicated with Cookie in Korean, which she practiced in advance for Cookie, whose English was unfamiliar. As time passed, Cookie gradually opened her heart to Lee Hyo-ri, and before she knew it, she accepted Lee Hyo-ri's touch.
Then, Hyori Lee and her friend moved to Cookie's house and spent time with Cookie. Hyo-ri Lee petted Cookie and said, "You've become so pretty. My ideal puppy." She laughed. However, Cookie did not seem to recognize Lee Hyo-ri, and Lee Hyo-ri did not hesitate to express her affection.
As she breaks up with Cookie, Lee Hyo-ri said, "Cookie is cool, but we weren't cool," and she said goodbye, "It's enough if you're happy. Forget about us. I'll go to my aunts. Goodbye." said

2, 8, 12 & 19
(2) pairing you want to see Apart from the ones I mention in (19), I feel like it's hard to choose something. Is it sufficient if I say that I'd die to see Teresa Li with anyone of the actors I like? I really don't care who but I want her to have a nice, feminist show with a nice ship with chemistry.
(8) i just answered here ;)
(12) an actor/actress you want to see in a lead role Luo Qiuyun & Jenny Zeng, as neither of them were given lead roles so far but they always steal the spotlight when they're in a drama. I also really wouldn't mind if Zhang Jingyi and Teresa Li got more lead roles. As for kdrama actors, I've come to enjoy Lee Hyeri a lot recently. Also really wouldn't mind if IU got some more roles to be honest. Same goes for Taecyeon who has a goddamn range... He does get roles though, some good ones, some bad ones. I think I also don't need to mention that I love Lee Jae-wook, and I wouldn't mind at all if he got more lead roles.
(19) a pair you want to see reunite but in a different drama My first choice here has to be Luo Qiuyun x Liu Xueyi. My Tianqi and my Yuemi are still my most tragic ship and I need a happy ship of them. I'd also die for another drama of Ling Meishi x Alen Fang and Kim Hye-yoon x Lee Jae-wook. Then I have some obvious choices many people share, like - Xu Kai x Bai Lu - Dew Jirawat x Tu Tontawan - Dylan Wang x Esther Yu - Ohm x Nanon - Wang Yibo x Zhao Liying - Lee Jong-suk x Han Hyo-joo.
Some Tianqi/Yuemi fan asked this because I feel like all my answers are related to them.

I’m enjoying so much tv (mostly kdramas) that I’ve decided to make regular updates on watch I’m watching. My total kdrama shows are now 19 completed with several more I’m currently watching.
finished or caught up with:
The Witch’s Diner - I enjoyed this slightly darker kdrama about witches and people trying to change their fates. They explored how people react to bad things in all relationships (friends, family, lovers, co-workers, classmates, etc) and how your attitude and actions can hinder you from taking for granted what you have and seeing the solution. It’s short and sweet at only 8 episodes. Great cast: Song Ji Hyo, Nam Ji Hyun, Chae Jong Hyeop!
Nevertheless, - This had good production value, great music and an interesting cast but wtf was that ending. I need my main couple to actually change and grow and admit they were wrong. Undefined, non-committal ‘relationships’ where neither party feels comfortable sharing their thoughts, needs, or past are my hell. No thanks. Side characters had good arcs. Potato Boy (Chae Jong Hyeop) deserves a spinoff as a rookie rock star streaming chef struggling with internet fame while looking for love in his sleepy seaside hometown, with his confident boy-crazed cousin and wise mentor grandfather along for the ride.
Imitation - A fictional look behind the curtain of kpop groups as they struggle to make it or succumb to the pressures of fame. Emotional and fun with tons of dancing and singing. Loved how the girl group was taking charge during their 2nd chance and writing their own music.
100 Days My Prince - My first period kdrama. Long lost childhood friends who were torn apart due to a military coup find themselves unknowningly reunited through a marriage of convenience from a new law requiring all single adults to marry as the threat of a new coup lies on the horizon. Perfect combination of humor, drama, action and romance. My intro to Do Kyung Soo and Kim Seon Ho.
Bring It On Ghost - After Vincenzo, I needed more Ok Taec Yeon. He’s great as a loner ghosthunter who gets haunted by a kick-ass female ghost. She can’t remember anything about her past including how she died. Love their enemies to friends to lovers arc. Unfortunately, the plot and side characters drag the story down too often but the leads are worth it.
rewatched:
My Holo Love - I’ve decided this is my comfort sci-fi kdrama. It’s not groundbreaking but it’s solid and leaves me with a smile.
So I Married The Anti-Fan (2021) - Still enjoyed this enemies to lovers pride-and-prejudice-like story. I love once they start their relationship there is no more doubt. They just fully support each other.
Never Have I Ever - A perfect Season 2.
currently watching:
Outer Banks - Slowly making my way through S2.
Hometown Cha Cha Cha - Only two episodes have aired and I’ve already rewatched them. A city-bred, down-on-her-luck dentist decides to open a practice in a sleepy seaside town bringing chaos in her wake as she struggles to adapt to small town life. Things are further complicated by the annoying but handsome handy man who seems to be everywhere. Shin Min Ah and Kim Seon Ho star as our dimple couple. Their smiles alone will melt you. Cannot wait for new episodes!
Hospital Playlist - Yes, I’m finally watching it. One episode in and it’s just as funny and heartwarming as promised.
The Great Shaman Ga Doo Shim - An anti-social teenage girl (Kim Sae Ron) struggles with her destiny as a shaman when an evil spirit threatens the lives of students at her new school. She reluctantly teams up with her smart, popular classmate (Nam Da Reum), who’s starting to fall for her, to save the students. This is more like a miniseries. There are 12 episodes but they’re only 20 minutes each so it will be about 4 hours total. Half have aired so far. It’s super cute and also giving me Buffy vibes so I’m here for it.

Worst KDramas of 2020
We can all agree that 2020 has been a dumpster fire, but we’ve been given several super amazing dramas (Hospital Playlist FTW) that have made my all time favorites list. However, we’ve also been given some colossally bad dramas this year. The list below are shows I watched that range from “Eh, I didn’t want to gouge my eyes out while watching” to “The people who green list this trash deserve to rot.”
Without further ado...my worst dramas of 2020:
7. The King: The Eternal Monarch
TKEM definitely wasn’t the worst drama of the year but, man, it was the most disappointing. For a show with such a stellar cast and writer, it turned out to be one of the most boring and nonsensical dramas I’ve watched in a long time. I wrote a few posts on why the show didn’t work for me - here and here and here. The only reason I stuck it out was for Woo Do Hwan because his poor back must have hurt carrying this drama. Oh, and I had to support Kim Kyung Nam too. So, really, the reason to watch this drama? See below.
Tumblr media
6. When I Was the Most Beautiful
I don’t mind a melo and I don’t mind a makjang melo either. But it needs to be done well. This was not done well. I wanted to watch because Ji Soo in a lead romantic role - the universe smiled upon me! Or so I thought. The show saddles the poor guy with being a high school student falling in love with his teacher and he never gets over it. He pines over her for years even when she marries his brother (who then disappears for years of course). It’s depressing, none of the characters are likeable and there’s no actual romantic payoff. Just everyone being upset, angry and jealous most of the time. No thank you.
[pretend there’s a gif of this show here cause I didn’t bother to gif it and it seems like no one else did either]
5. Was is Love?
This show started out pretty well and then turned into a mess. I started it because I really like Song Ji Hyo but, unfortunately, she does have the acting strength to pull off the complexities of this drama. The misunderstandings, lies and messy plot just made it into a frustrating watch.
Tumblr media
4. To All the Guys Who Loved Me/Men are Men
I’m a sucker for past life stories and I was actually pretty excited to see Yoon Hyun Min and Seo Ji Hoon reunite after Mama Fairy and the Woodcutter. I generally not a Hwang Jung Eum fan because she so often goes over the top but she actually impressed me here. It started out well - especially having the female lead be independent. Then it just got weird and messy. The show continued to have Yoon Hyun Min’s character be a creepy stalker who’s lying to her. Seo Ji Hoon’s character is a whiny man-baby. I can’t understand why she would want either of them and, after a point, it was just a slog to watch.
This was my favorite thing to gif in the show.
Tumblr media
3. Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol
You can send me angry asks all you want, gang. This one is bad. And it didn’t start out that way. It started pretty okay (I’m still not a Go Ara fan - she can’t seem to stop looking constipated when she’s trying to convey deep emotion) and I was enjoying the silly fluffiness of the show and supporting my baby Lee Jae Wook. A leading man role, yay!
And then...the big reveal came. Our hero is a high school senior - a 19 year old high school senior who met our female lead around two years prior when he was probably 16/17. A high school senior who pursued a relationship with an adult woman who he lied to about his age. And it really didn’t get any better from what I saw. Yeah, I dropped it after the reveal. I watched 14-16 just to see what happened. You can read my recap of the last episodes here. The show just didn’t make sense, the writing was all over the place and what could have been a fun and fluffy drama just floundered in nonsense.
But there is an adorable dog who wears cute lil’ doggy clothes.
Tumblr media
2. Backstreet Rookie
This show is the one that ripped Ji Chang Wook from my ultimate bias spot. How my dude could choose Melting Me Softly and then this is a crime against humanity. Full disclosure, I only watched the first four episodes and that was enough. I wrote a post about the age gap issue because people were losing their minds about how someone could watch and appreciate Goblin and find fault with it in this show. But that’s only one of the problematic aspects of this drama. A racist character who draws erotic webtoons? No thank you. It’s just not a good show, fam. Not at all. There’s so many things wrong with it. I skimmed through later episodes to see if it got better and - shocker - it didn’t. Even the writer must have figured out it was bad because the OTP didn’t even kiss in the final episode.
1. Born Again
Look, if you want an insanely bad show that is equal parts infuriating and hilarious, look no further. I wrote a review here and if you want details as to why this show takes the prize for the worst and most BoNKerS drama of the year check out some posts  here ,  here , here, here. Search my blog for it and you’ll find a treasure trove of insanity.
Let’s have our female lead fall for a dude who stalks her and tries to kill the guy she was engaged to in her past life. Who was also set up as the male lead for the first ten episodes before the writing staff changed. That might explain why it completely veered off course so badly in the second half of the show. I mean, to be honest, it wasn’t exactly a masterpiece to begin with but at least there was an interesting premise if not a heavy handed homage to Wuthering Heights. One of the very, very few shows I rage watched and ended up just shaking my head by the end. It’s a disaster. The worst of 2020 and, possibly, one of the worst Kdramas ever.
Tumblr media
Yep - you read that right. He wants to be the heart in her chest. Oh, how I wish that had happened.
As always, thanks for reading my opinionated discourse.

if you're still accepting: kim hyeyoon, lee jaewook, moon ga young, han hyo joo?
.
hye yoon: you know i love my girl that's why I am heartbroken but she's also on the special time out bench because she did that sn*wdrop drama and now is doing a sageuk with an old actor that's way too old for her and i don't like him so till she comes back in a drama i want to watch her in she is on the bench.
jae wook: I LOOOOOOOOOOOVE HIM SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO MUCH in move to heaven and when the weather was dead (I hate him as the killer in exyou and you know that) but he's unlucky and always gets cast with older actresses so i don't wanna see him act with them and am not interested either so till he finally makes a drama i wanna watch he's on time out too. him with park yoona in a drama would be sexy.
ga young: the first drama i saw of her was i kid you not *exo next door* lmaoooooo and she's a good actress and she was nice as the lesbian icon in TB and i like her and she's cute but also I don't think she's that memorable as an actress like something is missing for me but i would watch a drama for her if I like the ML next to her. like she's nice and a lot loooooooooot better than other *actresses* but she doesn't make me obsessed with her.
hyo joo: there was a time in 2013-15 and i was obsessed with her and i loved her i was really crazy about her. also her with so jisub in *always* will be FOREVER one of the most heartbreaking otps with a happy ending for me like those 2 should reunite in a drama just to see if they still got it. but now something is missing with her but i will check out the drama with her and hyungshik but not really a fan of her anymore the craziness died down because she made a lot of weird things over the years so i am not that into her anymore. also *w* was terrible 2016 dramas were not good.

my final review on Record of Youth (spoilers!!!)
do i recommend? yes and no. yes, because of how refreshing it is at the beginning, the dynamic between the young and between the elders. and no, because i don’t want you to be disappointed as much as i was when you reach the end.
rating? a good.... 6/10.
writing? meh. banter between hye-jun and jeong-ha kept me going.
performances? i enjoyed the acting, they made the writing more bearable. the way park bo-gum acts with his eyes—UGH i can’t believe this is my first PBG drama!!
review? here we go—
the potential that record of youth had was ✨ astronomical ✨
i liked the direction it was going in the first half! the second—not so much. too many new storylines were being introduced, and it’s hard to say, but none of them were being developed well. it felt like the writers were just cramming every possible loose end into the last two episodes while still making them loose. kinda frustrating.
i always thought The Bed Scene™️ was intentionally ambiguous, but for what reason? we later find that’s not where they broke up, but what part of their story does that fit into? they never talk about it again & it still doesn’t make sense.
also, remember those ominous voiceovers (what a simpler time) from the earlier episodes? aside from the fact that we didn’t get many voiceovers following that, remember when hae-hyo saying in his, “i still have a chance”? we don’t see him reunite with jeong-ha ever during the time skip. he wasn’t my favorite second lead, so he made not having second lead syndrome easier, but i definitely thought he deserved more.
i’ll give the ending a few things. the maintained wholesomeness of hye-jun throughout the entire show. he wanted to succeed and achieve his dreams on his own terms, and he did. saw that he already put his name on the map, so he decided to enlist because he felt it was the right time, which is what he established from the beginning.
and his and jeong-ha’s reunion-ish towards the end: talk about poetic cinema. i always thought the rain was a symbol of their hardships, and how them always being together under the rain was a way of showing how they were each other’s source of comfort, a distraction from all the pain they were experiencing. seeing them reunite under a sunny, blue sky—in contrast to the rain—was kind of touching.
i could go on, but i’ll leave it here. overall, i guess what i’m trying to say is that i wanted more. more visible growth rather than a time skip to “show” it. more interactions between certain characters that actually led to something. more focus on ms. ahn jeong ha (because she definitely deserved to be highlighted the way hye-jun was!! kinda did my girl park so-dam wrong). i was hoping for more.

Chapter 32 - How Did We End Up Here?
Shin-Il had no frame of reference at midnight that night. All he knew was that as soon as the flames were visible in the window of the apartment, he flew down the hallway, rushing past the elevator and practically flinging himself down the emergency stairs. His heart was pounding in his ears, and he could barely see in front of him, due to the darkness and the fact that he forgot to bring a flashlight with him to either scene. He was wondering how much if at all, the fire had spread at the dance studio. Did someone call the fire department? Did someone try to put it out themselves? Were there people inside that he didn’t think would be there; that he didn’t expect to get mixed up in the crossfires? As Shin-Il got to the ground floor and exited the building, he doubled over, taking multiple struggles gasped for air. As he looked back up towards the apartment he was just in front of, he saw little hints of smoke poking over the front railing.
The fire must not have spread outside the door yet…. Shin-Il thought to himself, looking down to check his watch. It was still the dead of night, just barely past 2 that morning. Just as Shin-Il was preparing to make his way back home, he heard distant voices from where the fire was coming from. Other families, most likely, exiting their homes to see what had suddenly gotten so hot. When they realized a fire had broken out, they began shouting. Shin-Il heard a woman call out four names, Min Ja, Hoseok, Hyo Bin, and another name he could barely make out through the sea of frantic tenants attempting to solve this problem until the fire department arrived. Shin-Il knew he did not want to be around when that happened, and he darted down the street just as soon as he heard more people leaving their homes to examine the scene.
Shin-Il had thought about that night ever since it occurred, watching the news like a hawk and reading the papers the day after. He cradled little Hyun in his arms, as she greedily slurped down the contents of a sippy cup. He wasn’t sure what he was expecting them to say, other than the contents of the fires and the possibility that they may have happened by the same person, for reasons unknown. He watched as they interviewed the owner of the dance studio, a soft-faced handsome man named Park Jimin, who was puffy-eyed and distraught at the destruction of his business, before cutting back to the newscaster back at the studio.
“We are fortunate to announce that while Dance Canvas Studio, as well as the Apartment Complex less than 10 miles away, were both harmed by the flames, all tenants of the building made it out safely, including all four who lived in the targeted home. Boyfriend Jung Hoseok, aged 27, was in critical condition, but he is expected to make a full recovery. His girlfriend and her two young daughters were rushed to be treated as well, but are assumed to not of inhaled as much smoke as the boyfriend. We will keep you updated as information is received.” Shin-Il felt relief wash over him, though he knew Weong-Bin may be furious that Shin-Il didn’t do what he asked. Deciding it was time to change the channel, Shin-Il turned off the tiny TV in his apartment. Leaning back on the couch, he looked down at Hyun, whose tiny hands were trying to set the empty sippy cup on a surface, since it was empty and of no use to her. Shin-Il grinned, leaning down to kiss her forehead as he set the bottle down, before hoisting her up on his shoulder to tap her back and burp her. Shin-Il closed his eyes as he did so.
When he opened his eyes, he no longer found himself sitting on his poorly upholstered couch, across from his tiny TV, with his tiny reason for living in his arms. Instead, when he opened his eyes, he saw that he was sitting inside a jail cell. Tilting his head over, he saw Myung-Dae, Chun-Hei, and the rest of his force working around a small, circular table, making phone calls and pacing the room as they worked. Shin-Il blinked, lifting himself up from his bench and walking towards the row of metal bars in front of him, blocking his path to the police.
“Officer.” He called, and the group all looked up. “Where’s Hyun?”
“We placed her with a temporary foster home until all of this is sorted out,” Myung-Dae said simply. “After I arrested you, you lied down there and passed out for a few hours, and the lawyers all told me she needed to be put somewhere soon when we started filling up with work.” Shin-Il let out a shaky breath, gripping the bars of the cage. Myung-Dae looked at Chun-Hei, nodding his head. The woman nodded as she headed towards the desk, and picked up her cellphone, dialing a phone number. Myung-Dae walked towards the cage, crossing his arms. “…Like I said when we first talked…we found your prints on the canisters and your phone number matched with the one Weong-Bin has been talking to in prison….” He said. “I could see in your eyes you looked out of it. Now that you’re well-rested, are you ready to tell me how this all came about?” Shin-Il nodded. “Alright…” Myung-Dae opened the cage door, leading Shin-Il out of the room. He saw the cops watching as Myung-Dae led Shin-Il down towards one of the rooms, where they could talk privately. He could see one of the other officers following behind, most likely to listen in and assuring Myung-Dae was following code.
As the duo entered the room, Myung-Dae and Shin-Il sat down across from each other. Shin-Il looked up at the policeman, waiting to see if he would be prompted to speak. Myung-Dae flipped open a notepad, slipping a pen out of his vest pocket and clicking it open.
“You ready?” Shin-Il asked. Myung-Dae glanced up, nodding. “Okay well…I met Weong-Bin when I started interning about 3 years ago. He was really nice and helpful, taught me everything I knew about the company. When my interning ending, he helped me get a low tier job so I could work my way up. I knew his wife and kids a little bit, and I tried to help him after he got divorced because he seemed really broken up about all of it. I never expected he was abusing his wife…” Shin-Il sighed. “I got let go right around the time my daughter was born. The pregnancy went wrong because she was tiny, we were only 19, and she had lots of surgeries. She ended up getting hooked on the pain medication they gave her afterward. I used whatever money I had to help raise Hyun and keep her safe, but it didn’t work….” Myung-Dae nodded, saying nothing and letting her continue. “When Weong-Bin first got arrested, a few people I knew from the company ended up telling me. I was nervous, I wanted to see him and show my support, but before I could, he called me.” Myung-Dae nodded.
“What did he say?” He asked. Myung-Dae had already heard all of the phone conversations between the duo from beginning to end, but he wanted to hear Shin-Il say it.
“Well, we talked the first few times just about whatever. I told him I didn’t think he would do that, and he thanked me. He asked about my daughter, I told him we were struggling with debt. Then he told me about his ex-wife and her boyfriend…and how he didn’t want the boyfriend around his family. I thought that being in jail was stressing him out, I thought he was kidding when he told me to kill Hoseok….” Shin-Il sighed. “But he told me he would pay me a lot of money, almost 500 million won, and even more if what I did helped him get proven innocent. I -.” Shin-Il sighed softly, leaning back in his seat. Myung-Dae could see his eyes were watering again and he waited patiently for the boy. “I didn’t want to…I really didn’t. But he assured me if I did everything right, I would never be caught. But he didn’t tell me what I should do, I’ve never lit anything on fire before!”
“I can see that…” Myung-Dae said softly. “So, what happened?”
“Well, he found a way to wire some of the money into my bank account, to show me he was serious….” He sighed softly. “So, I told him I would do it. The days passed and he told me where Hoseok worked, and where they lived.” Shin-Il gulped as he thought about what he would say next. “Then, the night before I told him I could do it, he called again. He sounded so frantic like he was having a mental breakdown. I still hadn’t even decided what I was going to do that night, how I would do this…then he told me that he didn’t think he would ever have his family back again, especially if he ended up in prison…” Shin-Il sighed. “He asked me to kill them all. I panicked; I had no idea what to do. When I asked how I should do it, he shouted ‘I don’t know, just burn them all’ or something like that….” Shin-Il bit his lip.
“So that’s what you did?” Myung-Dae asked. Shin-Il nodded his head.
“I had no clue where Hoseok would be, that’s the only reason I hit both places. I felt so bad when I saw the studio owner crying on TV.”
“…But not for the family you almost burned alive?”
“No, I felt horrible! When I was heading to the dance studio, I kept saying I should turn back, I should go home to my little Hyun…but then I thought of all the money and everything I could do to support her with it…then I thought back and forth and back and forth…next thing I knew, I was already at the apartment door. In a way, I was so relieved none of them were really hurt…” Shin-Il sighed. “But I called Weong-Bin through the jail and told him I finished….He said he’ll pay me when he sees proof…but I know now that he knows none of them died in the fire, so I wouldn’t be getting paid even if I didn’t speak right now…” Myung-Dae nodded.
“I’m glad to know you’re doing this because you know you won’t get paid,” Myung-Dae said, sarcasm dripping from his voice. Shin-Il glanced up as he watched Myung-Dae get up, walking over and standing the boy upon his feet. “It’s a shame a kid like you got roped into this, but it’s like you said, you told yourself to turn back and you didn’t. That’s where I lose all my respect for you…” Shin-Il couldn’t respond, nothing he could say would counteract what Myung-Dae said, because Myung-Dae was right. “However, you have been helpful. What you’ve said, along with the evidence, will help us keep that prick in prison for a long time.” Shin-Il nodded.
           “…Okay…”
“I’ll make sure you don’t end up rooming with him,” Myung-Dae said, nudging Shin-Il back out the door to complete the paperwork.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Hoseok was watching TV in one of the hospital chairs he had in his room. His belly was full of chicken and rice, he had his favorite show on, and he couldn’t be happier. As he used his arms to attempt a bit of freestyle to the music playing on the TV, he looked over at his bed, which held another reason that he was so happy right now. You were laying down on your side, eyes closed as your chest slightly rose and fell with every soft breath you took. After eating, you both had lied down, but only you had fallen asleep. Hoseok, deciding that you should have enough room to do so comfortably, gave up his bed in favor of the less comfortable, yet still manageable, chair. As he glanced over to you, he saw you nuzzle your head into the pillow, your eyelashes slightly fluttering a bit as you mumbled something in your sleep. It made him chuckle, and he scooted the chair closer to you. A hand reached out, placing itself into your hair as he ruffled it gently.
The tranquility of the moment was interrupted by the sound of vibration.
“Hm?” Hoseok looked around, his eyes falling on your handbag, which was placed on one of the side tables. He got up, walking over to it, and pulling out your phone. One the screen, he read Officer Chun-Hei. Glancing over at you, he saw that you were just barely starting to wake up. He sat beside you, handing you the vibrating cellphone, as you took it into your hands.
“I wonder what she needs…” You mumbled softly to yourself, before answering the phone call. “Hello?”
“Miss. Cho?” Chun-Hei hummed. She could hear the grogginess in your voice. “Are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m sorry…” you said softly. “I just woke up from a nap…is everything okay?” Chun-Hei was silent for a moment, making you glance at Hoseok with a curious expression.
“Well, I just wanted to inform you that…we found and arrested the man who burnt down the apartment and the studio.” You felt your heartbeat speed up at the thought, taking a few slow, deep breaths in an attempt to calm yourself down. “I think it might be a good idea to come down here…If you want.” For a moment, you thought about it. Did you want to see his face? You didn’t know if you could handle it. However, you knew that it would only be a matter of time, as you were expected to be at the trial for this man when he stood accountable for his crimes.
“I’ll be right there…” you assured, before quickly hanging up the cellphone. You let out a shaky breath, looking at Hoseok, who only offered a small smile. “I wish you could come with me…” you said softly. “I don’t want to go alone.”
“I’ll be out of the hospital soon…” he assured, running a comforting hand through your hair again. “You can do it….” Placing a gentle kiss on your forehead, Hoseok smiled. “Call me when you’re there, alright? And thanks again for the food.”
“Okay…” you said, getting up off the bed. Turning to Hoseok, you smoothed out your dress and grabbed your pocketbook. “Get some rest, okay?” You said. Hoseok nodded, waving a hand as he watched you head out the door. As you reached the exit, you stopped for a moment and turned to him. “…I’m scared. I don’t want to see him.”
“I know,” Hoseok said simply. “But with everything you’ve been through, this will be a walk in the park~.” He smiled happily. You nodded. “We’ll celebrate everything once it’s all over. I promise.” He said happily. Letting out a shaky breath, Hoseok put a hand over his mouth. As he leaned forward, he flung his hand in your direction, the sound of a loud kiss being sent to you. You giggled a bit. “Use it as courage! You’ll be okay! Fighting!” Playfully, you lifted an arm and caught the kiss midair, and Hoseok cheered. “Hell yeah!”
“Alright, I’ll see you later.” You said simply, waving him off as you finally exited the room. Once you were gone, Hoseok lied back in the bed and let out a deep breath. He hoped that kiss would provide you with enough, but he wouldn’t know for sure until he finally was released from this awfully lonely place.
---------------------------------------------
The trip to the police station was silent. The entire time, you sat in the empty cab, looking out the window as the world passed by. Your hand was clutched in a tight fist, pressed against your chest. Though only air, the idea that a little bit of Hoseok was making its way to the station with you helped give you some sort of comfort. You had no idea who would be at the station, waiting to come face to face with you. What was their story? Why did they do it? Would you ever have it in your heart to forgive him? These thoughts raced through your mind as you saw the cab finally pull up to the precinct, with cops and legal workers walking in and out constantly.
Myung-Dae was sitting at his desk when you walked in, and he almost immediately stood up, calling your name and hurrying over to you. He was quick to embrace you in a comforting hug, one you immediately returned.
“I heard about what happened this morning at court. How are you doing?”
“Better.” You admitted. “Chun-Hei told me you…caught the guy?” Myung-Dae nodded. “How?”
“Well, we found tons of…” Myung-Dae stopped himself. “This is going to be a lot to take in.” You forced out a sigh as you looked at the cop.
“Not as much to take in as the smoke that entered my lungs, Myung-Dae. I want to know.” You said quickly, clutching your purse tightly. Myung-Dae nodded. “Who was it and how did you find him?” Without saying much else, he led you over to his desk, handing you a manila folder. He began to explain everything to you.
“We found the prints of the man on canisters, and his face on cameras around both scenes at the exact times of the fires.” He said. He pushed a small SD card toward you as well. “We also…found phone calls…between him and Weong-Bin…” You blinked, looking up at him with wide eyes.
“Weong-Bin?” you asked softly. “…What does that-?” Almost immediately, your hands lifted up to cover your mouth. “…No. No.” you shook your head. “What are you trying to say?”
“I’m trying to say…Weong-Bin was the one who encouraged the arsonist to…attempt to harm you and the girls.” You leaned forward, gripping the desk with tight fists, meaning that whatever part of Hoseok’s little flying kiss was still in your clutched fist, it was not anymore. “Miss. Cho. Are you alright?”
“There’s no way. I know he hated Hoseok, I know he hated me…but the girls? He’s done awful things to us but….” You trailed off, trying to piece everything together.
“The conversations are on the card. You’re free to listen if you want to since we’ve submitted them as evidence and will be played at trial.” You shook your head.
           “I don’t know…” you said. Myung-Dae nodded.
“Chun-Hei and I are going to talk to him now, his lawyer is on his way there as well. I wanted to make sure I told you first, though…” he said gently. He saw you were still absolutely stunned by what you had just been told. I’m so sorry this is so sudden. But we have enough evidence, and the testimony of the man who did it, he will be going away for this….” You lied back in your seat, covering your face. Everything Myung-Dae was saying only seemed to be going into one ear and out the other, muffled behind the sound of your ears pounding and your heart racing. Everything on your body felt it was burning into your skin, and you could barely breathe, your body shook with every attempt you made to breathe. The next thing you knew was that a water bottle was set in front of you, and when you looked over, Chun-Hei was handing it to you. Taking it into your trembling hands, you quickly forced yourself to drink some. “If you want to listen to them, I’ll have a detective help you.”
“I want to come with you to see Weong-Bin.” You said. “I want to hear it from him…”
           “I don’t think that’s good-.”
“Then I’ll go myself. But I want to hear from him why this is happening.” Weong-Bin and Chun-Hei shared a glance. There was a moment of silence, and the officers could see your face getting paler with every second you were left with your own thoughts.  “I…I might throw up first.” Quickly, you got up and hurried into the bathroom, slamming the door behind you. As you entered the first stall, you doubled over against the bathroom and threw up all of the chicken and rice that had just digested, coughing and gagging and sobbing as you tried desperately to pull yourself together. You knew this trip to the station would be a difficult one, coming face to face with the man who harmed you and your loved ones.
           But WEONG-BIN?!
“There’s no way…” you choked out, wiping your face as you trembled. “I can’t believe this is happening to me right now….He couldn’t have….told someone to do this….” As you sat there, for what felt like forever, you waited until your stomach had stopped doing circus acts, and you were able to force yourself up onto shaky legs. As you headed towards the mirror, you were quick to wash your face and clean yourself up. If you were just this sick at hearing this, you had no idea how you would react if you looked Weong-Bin in the eye now. But you knew you had to. Not for Hoseok’s sake, or even for the girl’s sake. You had to do this for your own sake. He needed to know that his control over you, as of now, was officially over.
When you walked back out, you saw Myung-Dae and Chun-Hei preparing to head out to their patrol car and head to the penitentiary. They saw you approach, and Chun-Hei approached you.
“Do you feel okay? Maybe not coming with us is the best option now.” She said gently. You shook your head.
“I need to go.” You said simply. “I need to, or I don’t think I’ll be able to handle anything else.” Chun-Hei nodded. Looking over, you saw one man sitting on the bench of the cage, running a hand through his hair You blinked, staring at him for a moment. “Is that him?” you asked curiously, making the cops look over.
“Yes,” Myung-Dae said simply. You nodded, walking over towards the cage despite Chun-Hei trying to stop you. Shin-Il looked up when he saw you approach, and his eyes widened. He stood up immediately and hurried over to you. He could see your face was wet, most likely from a mix of tears and the sink water you had used to try and clean yourself up. The top of your dress was a bit damp as well, and your hair was no longer in a nice, sleek ponytail, but instead currently frizzing at the ends.
“Miss. Cho.” He said softly. You blinked.
“You’re Yoo Shin-Il? You worked with Weong-Bin, right?” you asked gently. Shin-Il nodded. “…Do you feel good about what you’ve done?” You asked.
“No…not at all…” he said softly. “I tried to hide it…but I told them because I regret what I tried to do. He manipulated me by using my little daughter, Hyun. I don’t even expect you to forgive me….” You sighed, gently lifting a hand out and placing it on top of one of Shin-Il’s that was wrapped around the bar. He looked at you in slight shock.
“He’s…got an amazing way with words, doesn’t he?” You smiled a bit. Shin-Il could see the sadness in that smile, all the years of regret and pain showing behind those slightly exposed teeth. “I’ll be sure…that I smack him for both of us, okay?” Shin-Il blinked.
“Why are you being so nice to me?” he asked softly. “I don’t deserve it.”
“You don’t. This isn’t for you,” you said softly, finally retracting your hand. “I’m a relatively good person. I hate to see others suffer, especially at the hands of Weong-Bin. I dealt with it for years, and I’m sure every single girl’s before and after me know what I have felt for almost a decade. I just…I hope your daughter grows up to never make the same mistakes you have. I’m sorry you were led down this path, but I’m even more sorry that your little girl has to grow up knowing what her father would stoop to for her.” You looked him dead in the eye. “It’ll shame her for the rest of her life, and it pains me that she will suffer that way. So when I smack him, it’s going to be for me and her.” Shin-Il let out a shaky breath as you stepped away. Without another word, you followed Chun-Hei and Myung-Dae out of the precinct. Shin-Il sank down onto his knees, bursting into an ocean of strained and painful tears.
------------------------
“Cho Weong-Bin?” A cop hummed as the door to the cell opened. Weong-Bin looked up from the chessboard, decorated with different black and white pieces. In-Ho glanced up at well, being Weong-Bin’s opponent. “Your lawyer is here with some cops. They need you.”
“…What the fuck for now?” he groaned, getting up. “I’ll be right back, In-Ho.” He said. In-Ho shrugged, waving his friend off silently as he pulled out a book, resting against the wall to read it. When Weong-Bin left, In-Ho laughed a bit.
“Well, that’s that it seems,” In-Ho mumbled to himself.
Weong-Bin was led to a different room on the other side of the jail. He wasn’t sure exactly what was going on, as he had no intention of meeting with his lawyer today, nor any cops that were focusing on the assault case, or any that were dealing with the fires. However, he kept his cool, assuming that if anything, they just expected it would be an intimidation tactic by the police, and Weong-Bin was not going to fall for this. As he entered the room, his lawyer was already sitting with Myung-Dae, the duo talking in short sentences.
“Hello, Officer,” Weong-Bin said. “What’s going on?”
“Have a seat, Weong-Bin.” His lawyer said, motioning to the opening seat beside him. Weong-Bin took a seat, nodding his head politely to the cop. “Myung-Dae apparently has some news about the fires.”
“Did you find out who did it?” he asked curiously. “I need to know. I’ll kill the guy.” Myung-Dae rolled his eyes.
“Cut the crap, Weong-Bin,” Myung-Dae said. Weong-Bin blinked. “Enough games, it’s time to come clean.”
“Come clean? What, you think I had something to do with it?! I’ve been locked up!”
“What’s with the sudden accusations, Officer Kim?” The lawyer asked, an unamused look on his face. “You trying to point fingers because there’s no lead yet?” Myung-Dae couldn’t help but laugh.
“Oh no, that’s not it.” He said simply. He pulled out his trusty envelope, setting it onto the table and opened it for the others to see. The first picture was the face of Shin-Il that was taken from the local security footage and fixed to expose his face. Weong-Bin blinked.
“So…what exactly is this?” he asked curiously. “That kid looks like a kid that worked with me a while back, Shin-Il. Did he have something to do with this, is that why you’re asking me?”
“Well, yea. What we really want to know is out of all the people you chose to ask for help, how you chose him?”
“I told you I had no involvement! I hate Jung Hoseok, but if this were the case, and I did do it, why the hell would I also involve my kids?!” Weong-Bin shouted, crossing his arms.
“Speaking in hypotheticals, of course.” The lawyer quickly injected.
“Because, much like any control freak partner, if you can’t have them, nobody can. Am I right?” Myung-Dae asked curiously. Weong-Bin watched as Myung-Dae reached forward, pushing the top papers away to reveal the documented phone calls between him and Shin-Il. “Do these…look familiar?” He asked curiously. Weong-Bin watched as his lawyer lifted them up and read them over. “We have the audio for those as well, which we confirmed is Weong-Bin’s voice in all of them as well as Shin-Il’s. You can’t claim it was faked or that it wasn’t Weong-Bin that made the calls, so don’t try.” Myung-Dae could see the façade finally begin to crack on Weong-Bin’s face. No longer did he see the face of a concerned father trying to prove his innocence. Behind that he began to see the eyes of the blood-thirsty, controlling monster that Weong-Bin really was. A specific sentence was running through his mind that Shin-Il had said when explaining what had happened.
He sounded frantic like he was having a mental breakdown.
Weong-Bin could see his lawyer’s face express some concern the more he read the call transcripts. He huffed.
“It must be a set-up. You can’t really believe this; you’re supposed to be my lawyer!”  Weong-Bin snapped. His lawyer set down the papers.
“I want to hear the audio.” The lawyer said, and Weong-Bin groaned. Myung-Dae smirked.
“Okay then. This is perfect, we can all watch it together. There’s someone else that decided to hear it for the first time as well.” Myung-Dae looked towards the cop, motioning for him to grab someone who was waiting out of view of the rest of them. Weong-Bin raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms as he waited to see what all the commotion was about. It took a moment, but Weong-Bin saw Chun-Hei walk into the room, with you walking beside her. His eyes widened as you bowed to the lawyer, and the cops as well, thanking Myung-Dae for allowing you permission to join. When you looked at Weong-Bin, you held up a small SD card in your hand. He could see it was shaking.
“I bet you never thought these would make it into the home video collection, did you?” you asked softly.

‘Moving’ Episode 20: Han Hyo Joo, Ryu Seung Ryong, Zo In Sung’s Characters Find Their Happy Ending
Tumblr media
The Disney+ original series ‘Moving’ has come to an end with its 20th episode, delivering a satisfying conclusion for the characters and the viewers. The superhero action drama, based on the webtoon by Kang Full, starred Han Hyo Joo, Ryu Seung Ryong, Zo In Sung, Cha Tae Hyun, and other talented actors as people with hidden superpowers who fight against dark forces.
‘Moving’ Episode 20: The Final Battle
Tumblr media
(Photo : Disney+) The finale episode began with a tense showdown between Lee Mi Hyun (Han Hyo Joo) and Jung Joon Hwa (Yang Dong Geun), a North Korean soldier who also has the ability to fly. Mi Hyun was in danger of being killed by Joon Hwa, but her son Kim Bong Seok (Lee Jung Ha) came to her rescue and fought against him. However, Mi Hyun wanted Bong Seok to run away, knowing that the North Korean troop leader Kim Deok Yoon (Park Hee Soon) was aiming a gun at him. Fortunately, Bong Seok was saved by Jeon Gye Do (Cha Tae Hyun), who used his electromagnetic power to kill Joon Hwa. Deok Yoon then tried to escape with the files that contained the secrets of the superpowered people, but he was chased by Jang Joo Won (Ryu Seung Ryong) and Lee Jae Man (Kim Sung Kyun) to the rooftop.
Tumblr media
(Photo : Disney+ Korea) Joo Won and Jae Man confronted Deok Yoon, who revealed that he had been working for Frank (Ryoo Seung Bum), a mysterious man who wanted to use the superpowers for his own agenda. Deok Yoon also confessed that he was the one who killed Jae Man’s father 50 years ago, when he was part of a secret mission to capture the superpowered people. Deok Yoon then tried to jump off the building with the files, but he was stopped by Joo Won, who grabbed his arm. Jae Man then shot Deok Yoon in the chest, causing him to fall. Joo Won managed to hold on to the files and pulled himself up.
The Aftermath
Tumblr media
(Photo : Disney+ Korea) A year later, the superpowered people were living normal lives without being hunted by anyone. Jang Hee Soo (Go Youn Jung) and Lee Kang Hoon (Kim Do Hoon) graduated from high school with their parents’ attendance, except for Bong Seok and Mi Hyun, who had gone into hiding since the incident. Joo Won continued his chicken business with Kwon Young Deuk (Park Gwang Jae), a former North Korean soldier who became his assistant. Hee Soo entered the university’s physical education department and became friends with Shin Hye Won (Shim Dal Gi), a girl who had super speed. Kang Hoon visited Mr. Min (Moon Sung Geun), the head of the NIS, and expressed his desire to join the agency with one condition: to clear his father’s name from criminal records. Mr. Min agreed and revealed that Kang Hoon’s father was actually a hero who sacrificed himself to protect the superpowered people from Frank.
Tumblr media
(Photo : Disney+ Korea) Kang Hoon also met the school guard and his classmate who disguised themselves as part of Jeonwon High School, but in reality they were high-ranking NIS officials who had been monitoring the superpowered people. Bong Seok and Mi Hyun left town and lived a peaceful life in a rural area. They occasionally received letters from Hee Soo and Kang Hoon, who updated them on their lives. Hee Soo also told them about a superhero wearing a yellow cape who appeared in Seoul and saved people from danger. In the last scene, it was revealed that the superhero was Kim Doo Shik (Zo In Sung), Bong Seok’s father and Mi Hyun’s husband, who had been held captive by Frank for 50 years. He managed to escape with the help of Park Il Chan (Jo Bok Rae), a North Korean soldier who sympathized with him. Doo Shik returned to South Korea and killed Frank, who had been hiding as an American businessman named Mark (Daniel C Kennedy). He then reunited with his family and hugged them tightly.

Quaranthings: Korean Dramas
It’s been a while, Tumblr. LOL I haven’t posted in a while – but we are living in a time of pandemic. I have never thought such day would come but here we are.
It has been 41 days since Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ) was implemented in Manila – and I have managed to catch up on my Korean drama backlog.
Thanks to streaming sites like Viu and Netflix, I have spent countless hours just catching up on the latest dramas (The King: Eternal Monarch, Itaewon Class) and the ones I have not finished watching (Mr. Sunshine, Reply 1997, Go Back Couple, Kill Me, Heal Me, My Love from the Stars). I also found time to rewatch my favorites (Secret Garden, Innocent Man).
The last one I watched was Mr. Sunshine. The writer, Kim Eun Sook, tells the story of a Joseon slave-turned-American soldier named Eugene Choi and a noble named Go Ae Sin – and the people around them: the mysterious samurai Go Dong Mae; the rich playboy Kim Hee Seong; and the beautiful, rich heiress/double agent named Hina Kudo. Set in the early years of the Korean Empire (led by Emperor Gojong), the drama depicted the political turbulence of the time: the traditional Joseon ways clashing with that of imperialists as well as the personal struggles of each character. Then there’s storge, eros, philia, and agape - I’ll probably write another review of that because in terms of writing, I think this is the best Kim Eun Sook drama.
I have been meaning to write something like this, but I guess I was inspired to share with the world why I love Korean dramas – like it really is a hill I would die on anytime.
Some weeks ago, a Filipino director openly tweeted his disdain for Korean dramas. In his words, he said that Filipino movies and tv are “doomed” because of “K-drama galore: faux Cinderella stories with belofied whiter than white actors. And it’s all about love in the midst of pandemic.”
 LMFAO. I had to laugh.
It came from a director with reputable filmography – I mean I loved two (2) of his films for their social commentary but I have to ask.
How many Korean dramas have you watched – LOL don’t tell me you only watched Crash Landing on You.
HELLO, ITAEWON CLASS WAS IN THE TOP 10. DID YOU WATCH THAT? Did you watch the rags-to-riches story of Park Saeroyi and his quest for justice to defeat the biggest food company, Janga Corporation?
Have you watched Sky Castle? The compelling story of rich families and their schemes to get their children into the best universities?
How about the Reply series? A nostalgic drama that tells the story of families, youth, and the times they lived in – 1994, 1997, 1988 – the nostalgia was fucking rich. I especially enjoyed 1994 and 1997.
Did you check out Another Oh Hae Young: a woman struggling to come into terms with her personal insecurities? Or have you picked up on It’s Okay, That’s Love: a romantic drama that properly tackled mental illness (the lead had schizophrenia).
From personal experience and the vast filmography of Korean dramas I have seen, let me point out why Korean dramas are the best – and why they’re so fucking addicting. I would have to say that this is not a research paper but rather a lengthy analysis based on my 12-year experience as a Korean drama enthusiast.
 1.      Creative value
Every drama starts with a great plot.
Sure, many Korean dramas are romantic. In fact, most of the Korean dramas I have seen in the early 2000s are romantic: Autumn in my Heart; Stairway to Heaven; Winter Sonata; Full House; My Name is Kim Sam Soon; and Princess Hours. There’s also Memories of Bali; I’m Sorry I Love You; and Coffee Prince. These dramas actually launched the Hallyu (Korean wave) that we know today – and their plots have the typical Korean drama romantic equation: guy meets girl – they don’t get along at first – then they fall in love – misunderstandings (or separation) ensues – reunited – fall in love again – they get married or end up together (or a lead dies). Then there are the non-romantic ones (historical): Jewel in the Palace and Jumong.
But as time went on, you see that the genres become varied – we started seeing action dramas (one of my favorites was Time Between Dog and Wolf) and medical dramas. Then there were dramas that also featured how Korean dramas were made (The World We Live In).
Korean dramas have varying plots that get recycled in many instances but with great plots also come characterization. The characters we see in dramas remind us of real people – we always relate to a character and we all get frustrated when they make stupid decisions (the Noble Idiot Syndrome) that really do not make sense. At the end of the day, we want happy endings for those who deserve happiness – we want justice served, we want closures, etc. because that’s how humans are.
In many romantic dramas, plots are reused but no character is the same. They would have similar traumas but never the same, carbon-copied character. There are villains you want to kill and then there are villains you sympathize with – because you realize that humans are multilayered, complicated creatures.
 2.      Production value
Another observation I have with Korean dramas is their careful attention to details. When writers create the script, they somewhat have actors in mind to play the character. In Korean dramas, they don’t really care about love teams. In the Philippines, we produce dramas based on the hottest pairs. In Korea, they don’t give a shit about that. Dramas are produced with the intention of creating a meaningful production so actors are chosen based on whether the writers and producers think they can bring their characters to life, not because they are the hottest commodity. In some dramas, actors have to audition, but in many instances, scripts are sent to actors with potential to perfectly portray the character.
Prior to filming, writers, actors, and production staff would spend a day or two in story conferences – actors would have the opportunity to discuss with everyone how he or she thinks his/her character is like. The directors and writers would provide their input on how the characters should talk, act, etc. Actors would also take the extra mile to learn a skill or two for the characters they played. They would have dialect coaches, language instructors, etc. Writers would consult with professionals – for instance, in many medical or legal dramas, they would hire doctors or lawyers on board to verify accuracy of terms. During broadcast, you would even see the jargon on screen to simplify them for the audience. In historical dramas, you would also see the terms used (in Chinese characters) and explain them in hangul.
During filming, you’d see how the staff has placed much attention on details – from the wardrobe to the set. You would also see themes, symbols, etc. The production aspect is really like how movies are: vivid, deliberate, beautiful. Who would’ve thought red pinwheels would make me tear up?
Each drama has a particular soundtrack – can I just say that Korean dramas have the best soundtrack. Each song played in a specific scene perfectly conveys the mood and feelings of the character. I have cried so many times listening to Park Hyo Shin’s “Snow Flower” (I’m Sorry I Love You) or Ji Sun’s ”Goodbye Without Saying Goodbye) (My Name is Kim Sam Soon). On my Spotify account you would see I have played Goblin, DOTS, and CLOY OSTs countless times.
In the past, dramas are not really pre-produced (meaning script came a week or two before filming). There are dramas wherein halfway through the broadcast, they had to switch writers because the earlier writer had a falling out with the production – so you’d see that the quality suffers (story plots would go crazy lol). There are dramas wherein they had to replace the actors because of scandals or accidents. In the last 5 years however, Korean dramas have become pre-produced: meaning the dramas will be filmed 6 months-2 years before being broadcasted. I guess this aspect has contributed to the fact that many Korean dramas are already available on streaming sites.
 3.      Cultural value
Each drama gives us a slice of the Korean culture – food, drink, skincare, attraction, and history. And noraebang (karaoke). Every romcom Korean drama has to have a scene at the noraebang...or jimjilbang (sauna).
Modern and traditional Korean dramas have to feature food: Korean barbecue, stew, side dishes. LOL you name it. There’s also soju, beer, and makgeoli. BEER AND CHICKEN.
In most modern Korean dramas, makeovers are a must. You would see product placements of known Korean products: Laneige, Etude House, Nature Republic, etc. The characters would go shopping in a particular shop like The North Face. Their coffee dates would be in one of these (Caffe Bene, Dal.Komm, HOLLYS, Zoo Café, Mango Six). They would buy their cakes or bread from Paris Baguette or Tous Les Jours.
Then there are road trips – many Korean dramas would feature a particular attraction, province, or city. Who can forget Nami Island (thanks Winter Sonata) or Namsan Seoul Tower (Boys Over Flower) or Petite France (Secret Garden, My Love from the Stars)? Of course, you can’t forget Busan (Reply 1997) or Jeju (Warm and Cozy) or Gangwon-do. It is definitely a K-drama fangirl’s dream to be able to visit in one of these places so we can relive our favorite Korean drama moments.
All of Korean dramas I have seen put emphasis on family – the importance of filial piety is always highlighted. The characters are often portrayed as dutiful daughters or sons. Conflicts often ensue when the character is challenged to choose between the parents or the love of his/her life (well in most Korean dramas that’s the case lol). Many dramas portray characters who try to be the good daughter-in-law and yet nothing is ever good enough. Then there are subtle flexes on Korea as an emerging superpower as seen by drama characters (chaebols) who head conglomerates. There is always a character who is filthy rich and can afford a billionaire lifestyle. Product placements include big companies like Samsung, Hyundai, etc.
Slice-of-life dramas also depict the realities in Korean society. Because This is My First Life and Something in the Rain aptly depicted the realities of harassment in the workplace from a woman’s experience. Many Korean dramas also relay harsh realities: meritocracy in the workplace; young adults juggling multiple jobs to make ends meet, etc.; even real estate situations are featured. Often you would find characters renting a small room because that’s all they can afford. From the dramas you would also notice that Koreans are not very kind towards single mothers or orphans. Then of course, there’s the North and South Korea situation: Crash Landing on You, Doctor Stranger, Spy Myeong-Wol, Descendants of the Sun are a few dramas that discussed this theme. The Reply series is a nostalgia drama featuring families that lived through some of important events in South Korea like the Seoul Olympics (1988), Asian financial crisis (1997), Sampoong Department Store collapse (1995), and the historic World Cup (2002).
Korean historical dramas are also interesting on their own – I guess until now, the Japanese occupation of Korea is still a sensitive matter for Koreans. Many of the dramas that feature such themes always depict the resilience and resolve of Koreans as they try to fight off the enemy. Yes, the scenes are depicted artistically, and the thought lingers long after the episode is over.
In terms of marketing, the government has also been proactive. With the Korean Wave (Hallyu), Korean dramas, as well as films, music, food, etc. have become an important commodity overseas. In 2016, Korean Culture Center wrote that Descendants of the Sun was sold to 27 countries, posting a profit of over KRW 10 billion (Php 412 million). The government acknowledges the important contribution of Korean dramas in tourism. Numerous papers have already been published showing the effect of hallyu in the South Korea tourism industry.
To make the long story short:
Korean dramas have gone beyond “faux Cinderella stories with belofied whiter than white actors”.  I mean, if you want to produce a quality drama, it takes time and effort. Personally it has become a great escape from the realities I face. I do not welcome opinions that clearly spring out of snobbery and disdain for another person’s craft. Perhaps the director can look beyond the Top 10 (since that’s what he mentioned) and check out the wide selection on Netflix. Viu is also a great platform (I’ll start on World of the Married – been hearing and reading about it lol)
Hallyu did not flourish overnight, and the Korean drama industry – while a great model to cite – is also not perfect. There have been numerous cases and instances when staff are overworked or not paid long after the production is over. The #MeToo movement has also exposed some actors who have harassed fellow actors. If we want Filipino dramas to enjoy the same spotlight as that of the Korean dramas, we should be frank about the outputs we have had. We have potential, but it really is up to the decision-makers (at least from the network perspective since it’s all about profits and star value rather than quality production in the Philippines) to come up with a formula that would revitalize Filipino dramas. I can’t say the same for Filipino films because we have great films – the dramas need much work to be profitable. I mean, are we really satisfied with a few dramas being sold overseas? When will we produce dramas that are at par with our Korean chingus? If you want Filipino dramas to be streamed on Netflix or Hulu or Apple TV – maybe we can look at genres beyond police brutality or infidelity or hacienderos harboring a secret child somewhere.
Anyway, Korean dramas are awesome – and that’s the tea.
