Hi! I'm currently rereading the Prime Override (I really love the story!) and m trying to get a more thorough understanding of Jango in this story. I'm currently stuck on one Canon scene and was wondering if you could elaborate Jango's thoughts there for me?
In canon, on Geonosis, Jango joins the battle attacking Mace while he's lost his lightsaber - likely bc a) hatred and b) convenient target since apparently less defense.
However, Jango in the Prime Override has pretty much lost his hatred instead of a thorough dislike. So, does this scene happen as in canon and if yes, what's his reasoning for joining the battle in this way (instead of possibly going for Boba and leaving) - a mix of anger (for being menaced beforehand) and fear (lightsabers are dangerous, but this Jedi doesn't have one right now)? Is he currently feeling more hatred than usual bc he prepared for being near Dooku? Something else I didn't think of?
Also, how does he think about that move afterwards (if he does at all)? Regret (maybe that wasn't the best move he could have made), annoyance (for dying to a Jedi), or maybe indifference (he was supposed to die at some point for the contract, after all)?
I hope this is something you can answer without spoiling anything to come in future chapters in some way.
Also, I really wanted to tell you how much I love your OC's (especially Ashe and Stabber) and positively flailed over the Stabber perspective last chapter XD I kinda want to give him aaaalllll the hugs 😂
I hope you have a lovely day/evening/night/whenever you see this, and take care!
Sorry for the late response! It's been a very rough few weeks for me, and I can't always guarantee I'll respond to Tumblr asks in a timely manner unless they're urgent, especially if they require any thought or a lengthy response, like this one.
At the time of his death in the Prime Override (and tbh, this fic mostly consists of my headcanons for canon), Jango doesn't actively hate the Jedi enough to go and kill them just because of it. He does dislike them enough that if given a good reason, he wouldn't hesitate to kill one if the opportunity arises. He is also heavily relying on the fact that both Tyranus and Sidious believe that he despises the Jedi passionately, and he uses this to hide his true endgame motives while working with them.
So tbh, while I don't consider this moment crucial to the Override plot atm, I think his actions make perfect sense within its context, for the following reasons:
1) On Geonosis, Jango is standing directly behind Tyranus (Dooku), and the entire arena execution was extremely public, so he could safely say that Sidious was also watching. So, Jango would be expected to act the way they expect him to, which is as you say: like he hates the Jedi and wants to kill them.
2) When Mace first appears, he, without prompting, ignites his lightsaber at Jango's neck. Jango was not aggressive or posing an active threat at the time; he was watching the arena with his bucket off, and Boba was right next to him.
Threatening Jango alone, publicly and in front of Jango's employer, is probably more than enough incentive for Jango to go after him. But that's not all; if you watch the scene, you'll see Boba jolt back away from the tip of the blade, and then run behind Jango. I'm sure Mace knew he was there and wouldn't have hit him, but from an outside POV (and that of a protective parent), that laser sword came awfully close to stabbing Boba, and that fact alone, Jedi or no Jedi, is probably plenty of reason for Jango to target Mace specifically.
3) While the lightsaber was held at Jango's throat, Mace's warning/threat is directed at Dooku, Jango's employer. Jango is, in fact, not on Geonosis for kicks and giggles and for introducing Boba to the joys of public executions. He's there on the job, to provide security for his employer. His employer is threatened, it's his job to get rid of the threat. The most clear threat is Mace.
4) Jango isn't stupid, and knows who the top Jedi is. He may or may not know about Dooku's history with Mace personally, but he's no doubt aware of the Head of the Jedi Order. If there's one Jedi of most "value" that the Sith would like killed, it's probably Mace.
Should note, that for a supposedly Jedi-hating guy who would love to kill them all, Jango doesn't start firing at the Jedi when they come pouring out into the arena; he stays back, only shoots Coleman Trebor when he lands on the viewing booth to attack Dooku since again, it's Jango's job to protect his employer.
Seeing Mace potentially at a disadvantage seems like both an opportunity that Jango must take, to keep up appearances, but is also the most convenient target, given both his prestige and the fact that he threatened Jango in front of Boba and Jango therefore has no guilt in killing him. If anything, the fact that Jango only goes after Mace instead of trying to kill as many Jedi as possible seems to give the "he doesn't actually want to massacre the Jedi" theory credence, at least to me.
Lastly, this isn't really much to do with Jango's reasons for killing Jedi or no, but I should mention that in the Override, Jango did have specific orders to get himself killed. Part of this is admittedly me trying to justify why Jango would take such a risk/not put up a better fight and live up to his reputation, but in general the characters in my head are a lot more competent than they're portrayed on screen. (I have similar justification headcanons for why Boba went out the way he did in ESB lmao)
I feel like I didn't answer all parts of your question, but I hope this answers enough and gives you some food for thought! If this moment does become more relevant to the Override, it will be covered in greater depth there.
Thank you so much for enjoying my work and reading my story!

Onward to 2023
It's been a crazy, emotional year for me (more where my health is concerned). I won't miss it (for the most part). Instead of focusing on the bad, I'll focus on the positive. ♥
I got to befriend some amazing people and even continue some friendships a bit more. I can hardly say any of them were tested. We stood strong beside one another, helped one another through rough times, and learned I'm not alone in how I view my own OCs. It's always nice to find a deep connection with folks on personal levels. ♥
Rping on Twitter was hardly what I expected. What I thought would become boring in no time at all, has actually become a joy. I met some great people and formed bonds I didn't think even Demiurge would make in those threads! I feel like I get to be apart of my own Isekai Quartet in a way where OCs are included. XD
I finally finished my comic from 2020, Dancing with the Devil. Upon learning an easier way to fill in lineart, I was able to get through it in no time at all. I am happy that was the case, but now I'm trying to motivate myself to either do smaller comic ideas like I used to as a kid, or talk myself into making Oreana's story into a Webtoon. ^.^; We'll see what becomes of that.. lol ADHD is a killer of many things.
I found the courage to finally start writing to the formerly nameless Angelic SB MC. It was hard to make that decision, but I decided not to let fear ruin me. Life is short, and I need to ignore the negative voices (in the fandom and in my head). ♥ I don't plan on the story being that long, as I can't really foresee myself being creative enough in an AU to still make it that engaging. But I am still shocked by the love it has with only 3 chapters! I love being able to get my own headcanons of certain situations down on paper.
The Demon King of the Desert still shocks me to this day. What began as a 'I need a break from the fandom and write my own thing with this character' turned into a lot more. It's been cathartic for me. I will be sad to see it go sometime next year, but I know all good things must come to an end. ♥ I like to believe my Demiurge has a unique soul that is hard to just vanish from one world, so there will be many other stories with him.
But also, many other monster stories in general. ♥
I do have ideas for next year, but I won't spoil them. Let's make 2023 a fun one full of good and welcoming surprises.

Ooh I'm so curious about your Anakin and obi wan time travel fic!
WELP!! Thank you for the ask! I got so into cleaning up what I had in order to answer you, I actually went ahead and got the first chapter clean enough to publish!
Ended up calling it "A New Path", I had to save my originality! xD
Anyway, it started as an idea from baby-fandom me. I had just blazed through Elfpen's Reprise series, as well as some delicious Hannibal time travel fics, and I was determined to do my own take. All I was reading was single travelers. Obi-Wan goes back in the past, or Anakin goes back (Or Will, or Hannibal...) And the dynamic is with one-sided knowledge of the future. So I figured it would be fun to have them both go back instead, and not from the same time, but from the moment of their death.
Lots of whump follows, since I love writing dialogue and these two have a lot of catching up to do, but ultimately I built things up to these two youthful grandpas going to bully Yan Dooku. The joy was in the sheer gap moe of a reforming Vader in a 10 yo body, an Obi-Wan who's fully over it, and their insane team tactics on their way to take Sidious down.
---
Here's a bit of said Dooku bullying, though it's not as polished as the published bit. Yan is making Obi-Wan and Anakin wait and observes them via security feed :
His grandpadawan's attitude had been peculiar enough in his first message. Something is going on with him beyond the grief of Qui-Gon's recent passing, something Yan can't put a finger on. He has never met Obi-Wan Kenobi in person however, and is left guessing. Kenobi's own padawan, a ten-year-old boy if the Order's records can be trusted, is far beyond "peculiar".
'I still doubt this will work,' he says, brushing back his bangs. 'And I do not believe we're in a position to waste our time so frivolously.'
He paces by the windows of the lounge Yan's servant led them to, stopping now and then to stare outside before turning sharply on his heels and scanning the room with the bored air of someone who has played the waiting game too many times.
'Patience, Anakin,' Kenobi counters mildly. 'Our actions are what gains us time.'
'I still think we should have gone to Tatooine first.'
'We did.'
'But we did not stay,' the child snaps, pointing an accusatory finger at his master. 'We could have achieved a lot more there. Do not deny it.'
No child should speak this way, let alone to their master. Yet Kenobi reclines on his couch, fingers crossed over his chest, following the vagaries of his padawan from hooded eyes, a soft smile on his lips. He seems entirely unbothered by the haughty tone and formal speech patterns.
'Shmi is safe and the rest of Tatooine can wait. Dooku cannot.'
'He's already lost to us already. Look!'
The child encompasses the view from the window with a sweep of his arm, then extends the other to take in the residence itself. It's old and lavish, his family's seat of power. Yan knows exactly what the boy is trying to say, and it stings.
'My friend, I think you are misguided in this,' Obi-Wan says. 'I have faith that we will find my grandmaster reasonable, whenever he's ready to come and greet us.'
With these words the young man turns his head and looks squarely at Yan. So, he spotted the camera. Yan wouldn't expect any less from Qui-Gon's prized pupil. Yet he doesn't feel ready to greet the strange duo.

@thegirlwithnonickname here are chapter two and three of Always by your side!
I still remember how I wrote chapter three... sitting in my bed listening to "Grow Old With Me" by Michael Schulte on repeat and crying xD I can really recommend that song, it fits the story and especially chapter three very well!
.
Chapter 2
Tyler lay down and took his phone from the bedside table. He dialed Lucas number. Even though it was already pretty late he answered immediately. As usual.
'Hey.'
Tyler closed his eyes. 'Hello Lucas.'
For a moment there was silence. But than Lucas started to talk again.
'They're fighting again, am I right?'
Tyler nodded. He could hear them downstairs.
'Yes', he whispered. Lucas sighed.
'What's the reason this time?'
Tyler clutched to his phone.
'I don't think they need a reason anymore. Especially dad.'
'Damn. Do you want me to come over?'
Tyler shook his head.
'Don't be silly, it's the middle of the night.'
"So what? I can sneak out.'
Tyler wouldn't doubt that. It wouldn't be the first time.
'You don't have to come over.'
'Sure?'
'Yes.'
'Okay, when you think so... Hey, have you heard...'
He started talking about some story he heard in school or on the internet or somewhere else.
He didn't care if the story was true or not. He was just talking.
And Tyler didn't care either, as long as he heard Lucas voice.
It was calm and familiar. That always calmed Tyler down.
After some time Lucas stopped and asked: 'Is everything alright now?'
Tyler took a deep breath. "Yeah everything's alright.'
'Good. Good night Ty.'
'Good night Lucas.'
That's how it went everytime. When Tyler's parents were fighting late at night Tyler called Lucas. Then they talked until Tyler could forget about his fighting parents.
No matter to what hour, Lucas was always there. Tyler would often flee to Lucas and his family when the situation at home was too much for him to take.
And especially when he was a young boy his mom used to send him over to Lucas home when she knew that her husband would start a fight again. She didn't wanted her son to see that. And she knew that Tyler was in good hands when he was with Lucas family.
He was always welcomed there.
~~~
As Tyler walked down the stairs he could hear his mother talking to someone. His father was at work, so that probably meant she had a guest.
Tyler hesitated. He didn't really feel like having company right now.
But suddenly he recognized the second voice - it was Lucas mother.
Tyler walked down a few steps so he could hear the two women talking.
He sat down at one of the stairs so they wouldn't see him and started to listen.
'... really strong, you and your husband.'
'We... we try our best. It's hard. But we try.'
Lucas mom sounded like she had cried. It reminded Tyler of her call on the day Lucas had died.
Just thinking about that made him wanna go back to his room.
'Say, how is Tyler doing?'
Tyler froze as he heard his name.
'He's not feeling good. The boy hasn't really left his room since Lucas funeral. Sometimes I hear him cry, late at night... It's really hard for him.'
'The poor boy. It would've break Lucas heart. Tyler was his best friend.'
'And Lucas was Tyler's best friend.'
Tyler stood up and walked down the rest of the steps.
'And he'll always be my best friend', he said.
The two women looked at him in surprise.
'Tyler', they both said.
Lucas mom stood up, walked towards him and hugged him.
"It's nice to see you Tyler.' She smiled. It was a sad smile.
'Sit down darling', his mother said.
Tyler took a seat and Lucas mom sat down as well.
Tyler's mother brought them a cup of tea.
'I'll leave you alone.' Then she left the room.
Lucas mother took a sip of her coffee. Then she looked at Tyler.
'I'm here because I wanted to thank you. For your speech. I didn't had the chance to do it at the... at Lucas funeral.'
Tyler could remember his speech. He had to stop halfways because he started to cry. In front of the whole community.
'Lucas deserved a way better speech.'
'Don't say that Tyler. It was beautiful. Lucas would've liked it.'
Tyler wasn't sure about that.
'I should've finished it.'
He was still angry about it. Lucas would've ended the speech. He was strong. Tyler wasn't.
Lucas mother shook her head. 'What's important is what you said, not whether you finished it or not. It was really important for us. That's why I want to thank you.'
'You don't have to. He was my best friend. It was the least I could do.'
Lucas mom smiled. 'Yeah... My little boy... he always wanted siblings, did you know that? He used to ask me when he'll finally get a little brother.'
The memory made her laugh. It sounded a bit like Lucas laugh. Tyler missed it...
'He always wanted someone he could play with. Someone he could protect. He never stopped to ask me. That's it, until he met you. Since he befriended you he never asked again. I think... he had you and that was all he needed.'
She took Tyler's hand. 'He really loved you. You were like a brother to him. You know, I'm really glad that you and Lucas found each other.'
'I am glad too. Really. I...' He stopped.
There was so much he wanted to tell her. He wanted to say how important Lucas was to him. How thankful Tyler was for everything he had done for him. That he changed his life. That he showed him what friendship meant. And he wanted to tell her how much he missed Lucas.
But as Tyler looked at Lucas mom he suddenly realized there's no need to say all this out loud. She knew.
She let go of his hand and stood up.
'I have to go now. My husband is waiting for me. Thanks for your time.'
She smiled at Tyler's mom, who just came back into the room.
'I'll bring you to the door', his mom said.
'Okay. Goodbye Tyler.'
Tyler stood up and said goodbye as well.
'Wait, I almost forgot. There's something I wanted to give you.'
She searched her purse for a small object and gave it to him. As he looked at it he knew what it was. He couldn't believe his eyes.
'That's... that's...'
'Lucas bracelet.' Lucas mother nodded.
'I can't accept this...'
The little item in his hand was really the leathern bracelet Lucas used to wear. He already owned it when Tyler met him. Lucas loved the bracelet.
It was a gift from his late grandfather. It was something special to him. And a huge keepsake.
'Yes, you can. Lucas would've wanted you to have it. I know you'll take good care of it.'
She closed his hand around the bracelet and hugged him again. Then she left.
Tyler stood alone in the kitchen. He opened his hand and looked at the bracelet.
It felt like a piece of Lucas came back to him.
And he swore he would never let it go.
.
Chapter 3
'Come on, Tyler. Get out of there', his mom called.
But ten years old Tyler refused to leave his hideout. He was lying in his bed, the blanket raised over his head. He knew it was childish. He didn't care.
'I don't want to.'
Today was the first day at the new school and Tyler didn't want to go. He was scared. Because a new school meant new people and a lot of changes. He hated changes.
'But you have to. Otherwise you'll be late for school.'
Tyler ignored his mom's words. But suddenly a second voice caught his attention.
'Yeah she's right! We'll be late!'
Tyler recognized it immediately.
'Lucas?'
The other boy made his way to Tyler's bed and lifted the blanket a bit to get a look at his friend.
'Yeah it's me. I've been waiting for you, buddy. It's our big day today! Why are you hiding?'
No answer. Lucas sighed.
'Let me guess. It's about school isn't it? I promise you, it will be fun! You don't need to worry.'
'But... I am worried, Lucas. All the new teachers and classmates...'
Lucas was an optimist. Where Tyler only thought about the negative things, Lucas saw what was good. And he tried to let Tyler see it too.
'... won't harm you. Come on Ty, we can't stay in elementary school forever. Sure, there are new people. Some things may change, but that's not a bad thing. Just think about all the new things we'll learn!'
That was one of the reasons Tyler was glad to have him as a friend.
'Besides, you're not alone there! We're in the same class, remember? I'm with you. That won't change. We'll get through it together. We're partners, right?'
Tyler peered from under his blanket to look at Lucas, who was smiling at him. And he returned the smile, because he knew that Lucas was right after all.
No matter what might happen. No matter what might change. He wasn't alone. His friend was there. They were a team.
'Then let's go, partner!' Tyler, now a little less scared, finally got out of his hideout.
'That's what I wanted to hear.', Lucas said.
Tyler's mom once said that one of the most beautiful things about Lucas and Tyler's friendship was how they were always there for each other and how they complemented the other perfectly.
Lucas had enough joy living inside of him to lift Tyler up when he was feeling down and Tyler's steady personality calmed Lucas down when he overextended himself.
~~~
As Tyler went into the school building, he almost felt like back when he had his first day at this school. Everything seemed strange and exclusive. The many students, the colorless walls and the noise.
But this time he was alone. Lucas wasn't there to make him feel safe.
Tyler had begged his parents to let him stay at home for another few days. But they said no, so he had to go.
He felt completely overstrained. He spent the last few days alone without talking to someone besides his parents and Lucas mom.
Now that he was surrounded by people again, he was lost.
It wasn't just that he was alone, everyone was starring at him too. Everyone knew about Lucas. And everyone knew that Tyler was his best friend.
So everyone was looking at the guy who just lost his only real friend.
It must've been a strange sight. Tyler had the hood of his hoddie pulled down low to cover up his insomnia and grief marked face and to block everyone out.
But the strangest thing was to see him without Lucas.
Even in school there had always been Lucas and Tyler, Tyler and Lucas. Everyone knew that. The people were used to see the two of them together all the time.
Tyler without Lucas however... That wasn't normal.
And for Tyler it was a nightmare.
He struggled to get through the lessons. He never said a word. All he did was sitting in his classes, lost in thought, playing with Lucas bracelet around his wrist and starring at the blackboard. He couldn't recognize a single word that was said during the lessons.
He couldn't focus. Tyler just wanted to escape.
He could do without the trivial lessons and the pitiful glances of teachers and students.
~~~
'Tyler! Hey! Wait! Tyler!'
Tyler kept walking. All he wanted to do is survive the break and the lessons afterwards so he can go home again. Was it that much to ask for?
'Come on, wait! Hey!'
Someone grabbed his arm. Tyler stopped and turned around. It was Maya.
'What do you want?'
Maya was one of the people Lucas and Tyler spent their breaks with.
It was a small group of people that started to gather around the two boys in the past few years.
Slightly shocked by the rough sound of Tyler's voice Maya let go of his arm.
'I-I just wanted to ask you where you're going. Surely our friends are already waiting. We normally meet every break, remember?'
Actually Maya and the others were Lucas friends, not his. Because everyone loved Lucas. And they accepted Tyler, but he was never a real part of their group. Or at least it never felt like it. He never felt really close to any of them.
'Well, go and meet your friends then. I prefer being alone.'
'But why don't you wanna come with us? I'm sure it would be good for you to have some company. Lucas would've wanted...'
'Don't you tell me what Lucas would have wanted!', Tyler cut her off.
Maya flinched.
'Tyler...'
But Tyler wasn't listening.
'No! I can't sit there with you as if everything is alright. Because it's not! Maybe you can do it, laughing and talking like you always do. But I can't. Not when Lucas is gone and you all are acting as if everything is like it used to be. Nothing is like it used to be anymore."
Tyler didn't noticed that he overacted. He was just full of anger and frustration. It was all too much for him. And he wasn't able to control himself, not yet.
'That's not true Tyler, and you know it! Of course nothing is like it used to be. Lucas is dead and that's horrible! And we all miss him so much. You might not think that, but we do! Just because we still meet up doesn't mean we forgot about him or that he wasn't important to us. In contrary! Because he was. And he'll always be. But life has to go on Tyler. Please, I just mean well.'
Maya sighed.
'Listen, I know you two were pretty close to each other. You knew him longer than any of us. And I know how you feel. But what you just said about us isn't fair.'
'Leave me alone!', Tyler shouted. 'You know nothing!'
'He was my friend too. Our friend. You're not the only one who lost him.'
'Not the only one, huh? Not the only one! But he was my only friend, understand? The only one I ever had. My best friend! For nine years! Nine damn years.
You haven't spent nearly every day with him since you were eight years old. He never visited you as you broke your leg because you fell from a tree while climbing or tried to comfort you because your parents were fighting again.
He was always there. And now he's gone and I'm alone! I'm alone...'
His last words were just a whisper. Tyler felt how tears started streaming down his face. He couldn't tell if it was because of anger or grief or both. All he knew was that he had to leave. Leave this horrible school.
So he wiped of his tears, turned around and ran.
Away from the school building, past hundreds of students. No one stopped him. Maya stayed behind. Speechless.
~~~
'Lucas?'
'Yeah?'
'We'll always be friends, won't we?'
'Of course!'
'No matter what's gonna happen?'
'No matter what's gonna happen.'
'Even when we're adults?'
'Even when we're old and grey. You and I. Till the end.'
'Promise?'
'Promise!'
~~~
The last time Tyler visited Lucas and his spot was on the day Lucas died. He never dared to visit it afterwards. Until now.
After he ran away from school he got back to this place. He and Lucas used to be there a lot.
Tyler didn't knew where else to go. He couldn't go back to school. Or home.
This was the only place he could be alone. No one would notice his breakdown. Or hear his screams.
'You promised! You hear me? Promised! You said... you said you and I... we... you said...'
Tyler thought they had a lot of time left. Their whole lives. After all they would always be friends. They would always be there for each other. No matter what. That's what they promised each other.
But fate didn’t seem to care about little boys’ promises.
'Why? Why you of all peolpe?'
Tyler sat down on the floor, his back against a large rock.
Slowly his anger turned back into the familiar feeling of grief and despair.
Suddenly he just felt... exhausted. So he closed his eyes for a while.
As he was sitting there, eyes closed, he had the sudden feeling that he wasn't alone.
But that was impossible. No one ever came here. Still, it felt like someone... or something was with him.
So he opened his eyes and what he saw shocked him. There was indeed someone. Right in front of him. And he watched him with concern.
Tyler recognized his face immediately. This face - He would know it in death.
But... that wasn't possible.
'Lucas?'
Quick Thoughts on Book 3, Chapter 14
• Apologies for the delay, guys. Still recovering.
• It's time for our Ball! YAY.
• ...and for Hana's parents. Not so yay.
• Every LI in the group has at least one not-very-ideal parent. For Liam and Maxwell it's their dads (though Bartalemy seems to be the best of the four) and for Drake and Hana it's their mums.
• Title: Welcome, One and All!
• Alternate Titles should include This Chapter Is Brought To You By Jeffery.
• For those who don't remember the TRR pre-release interviews, Jeffery is the dude who loves hats:
Tumblr media
I'm pretty sure this chapter is his baby.
• So technically Xinghai and Lorelai have not kept in touch with Hana since her fight with Xinghai in Shanghai (that rhymes). There is a hint that she might have tried to reach out to them before the tour if you were getting engaged to her (she asks Ana de Luca to send the copies of her shoot to an address, which I presume was her home in Shanghai).
Tumblr media
You bet I slammed that last option.
• There's also not a lot of difference in this scene between the Hana playthrough and the non-Hana one, and there should have been. The dynamics of this discussion will - should - be different if you're Hana's fiancée. They have Lorelai and Hana's dialogues change if you're marrying her at the end, but technically that's unavoidable. There should have been an obvious difference in dialogue here as well.
• Bertrand has returned. Again.
• AND HE'S LATE. Apparently because his son needs to be coached on proper cutlery placement through the babysitter.
• We have a brief tete-a-tete about Savannah and Bartie before moving on to our OOTD:
Tumblr media
Tbh I think I'm okay with both. I had my reservations about the neck but I also like capes so I will take it. The traditional dove one makes you look like Red Riding Hood.
If you choose the phoenix gown, you also get to don a humongous hat, and you get the option to take it off anytime.
Tumblr media
Esther loves hats. She's a happy happy camper xD She may not have said those 'fancy hat's comments to Regina in Book 1 but you bet she was thinking them! So Esther - and I as Esther's creator - feel validated and vindicated and all other sorts of v words 😄
• Also yes, Esther, I'm pretty sure that hat ate every other hat in Cordonia before making its way to your head.
• It's now time for our Ball, and our LIs are waiting for us to make our entrance. Liam calls you 'a heroine of myth and song', Maxwell tells you you're 'on fire', Drake asks him if you're trying to give him a heart attack, and Hana settles for a very simple 'you look gorgeous'.
• Okay yadda yadda announcements, yadda yadda speech, yadda yadda complimentes from guests esp if you chose the phoenix decor, yadda accolades all around.
• Basically the main conversations taking place at the Ball are with Madeleine, Kiara, Regina, Mara and Olivia.
- Madeleine: Mainly to close the main loop of Madeleine's role as press secretary. The previous conversation with Liam/Drake at the Lythikos Ball is implied when you choose to call her a snake, even though she sees that as a compliment.
- Kiara: You get to either call her brave, or to ask her about her well-being. Thankfully, she is able to at least sleep at night now. They're definitely wrapping up Kiara's story here. Which is okay, I'm pretty certain it wasn't meant to be manifested in the first place and I suppose I'm expected to be grateful she got some attention. But I won't be, because she deserved this - and perhaps better. I couldn't care less for her brother and would rather not see him again but at least they had the decency to wrap up her storyline first this time rather than ignore it in favour of him completely.
- One of my favourite sequences is the one with Regina. She's clearly affected by Constantine's death and still hasn't recovered enough to get used to the idea of attending a Ball without his presence yet. But you also see her struggling with the stoicism she's been brought up on, and chastising herself because she can't. You have the choice of either asking her what Constantine would have told her if he were alive (like hell I'll choose that option!) or telling her she should allow herself to grieve. I thought her parting words in this conversation were beautiful.
- Mara: From Mara we learn that the Nevrakis family had connections with the Sons of Earth, and that in fact Anton is the son of the leader of that group. I've seen some interesting theories around this, one of which is (I believe this one is @alicars theory) that he is Francesco's son. Which...would make that first meeting in Italy quite interesting, as well as the reveal that Francesco was friends with Liam's mother. Will Liam's mother's background be brought up in future chapters??
- Olivia: So this is what all our efforts to win Olivia over culminates into! I have such Diavolos vibes with this scene (not the betrayal bit, but the winning their trust bit. Olivia I think sticks by Liam's side whether she likes you or not), because if you look at the TCaTF ally chart in Book 3, Diavolos' name is the last on the list of people to join you, even though he has spent time with you as an ally and been part of the rescue mission to save Mind Control!Dom. In a lot of ways, while Olivia has a huge connection to Liam and becomes your ally on that score, it requires effort and some ice-breaking to get her to fully support you.
• Say hello to my new pets y'all!
As of now Esther has a horse named Celestia, a corgi names Joy, a visiting hawk named Tiberius, a black panther named Cava and two red pandas she has named Hansel and Gretel.
• I wonder if you have the ensuing group scene if you don't choose to accept the red pandas (I'd see for myself but the red pandas have really adorable sad faces).
• The group scene is alright, it's a lot like the one in Shanghai with the pandas. Liam is adorable and holds them like a pro, Maxwell is super super SUPER excited, Hana is shocked by their lack of manners (Hana they're animals!) in comparison to pandas and Drake is a mean meanie. You have Zeke on the side giving us factual animal info.
• We're now back at the estate, and Hana's folks have arrived.
• TO TAKE HANA BACK???
• Hana puts up a good fight against her mum (let's be honest, Xinghai hardly seems to have a say in this. He looks sad about this and barely gets in a sentence. This show is all Lorelai's), and refuses to come with them, at which point Lorelai insists on taking her belongings away since they belong to the Lee family, and she isn't a Lee anymore.
• You know what I want Hana to say?
"FINE KEEP THE CRUMMY LUGGAGE MOM LETS SEE IF YOU CAN MAKE ANOTHER WHOLEASS CHILD OUT OF THAT"
• Please tell me she gets to kick Lorelai's ass this chapter. Please.
• So the Ball and festival will continue this chapter, and I'm guessing that any drama might happen later on in the Capitol if we go by the trajectory of the previous books. The places most closely connected to the MC - Ramsford, New York, Valtoria - are usually where you forget briefly the tension in the books, before being plunged into complete and total chaos.
• I still think there's a LOT we have left to find out. A LOT.
• There is a possibility that Hana will get a diamond scene post her confrontation with her parents. And as far as I can see it, this is the culmination of her entire journey, her entire struggle. This is the last shot the writers have at doing justice to her character, and giving her a good scene. If Hana doesn't get an extremely fulfilling, nuanced scene - one that has a marked difference between her as a fiancee and her as a friend - then I doubt she will get another one. They will have lost their chance to be fair to this character.
• And if they fail to do justice to this character...I'm afraid that will be the end for me. I may be chapter reviews and essays, I may still write stuff inspired by this book...but whatever love I still have for TRR will be lost for good.
• Because you know what you're telling me, a brown woman with an upbringing not entirely unlike Hana's? Who loves this character and has to now try to relate to her because her own writers didn't give me enough material? You're telling me that you don't think stories like Hana's - stories like mine - are worth attention, worth nuance, worth telling properly, worth telling with heart. You're telling me women like Hana are alright as tokens, but not important enough as characters. You're telling me you want the accolades that go with using women of colour in your stories, but don't want to put in the work. In fact...you're already telling me that. You've been telling me that for the last two books.
• I'm sincerely hoping this will change with the chapter I will play now, and that I and other Hana stans don't walk away from this chapter disappointed. I really, really do. It won't completely make up for the lack of care they have given this character...but it will be SOMETHING.
• With that, I'm going to go into this week's chapter, folks. Seeya!
