The concluding season of “Billions” is a case of “Axe” and you shall receive.

One of the series’ most prominent characters returns as the drama set in the upper levels of New York law and finance begins its seventh and final season Friday streaming on Paramount+ With Showtime, and Sunday on the linear Showtime channel. (Subsequent weekly episodes will maintain that release pattern.)

A good amount of the show’s history is incorporated into its victory lap, a particularly notable aspect being the return of founding cast member Damian Lewis as Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, the former hedge fund king who relocated to Europe to avoid a prison term engineered by his longtime nemesis, federal attorney Charles “Chuck” Rhoades Jr. (Paul Giamatti).

With the empire that Axe built now under the control of tycoon Michael Prince (Corey Stoll), who has designs on winning the U.S. presidency, changes are looming … something that “Billions” is known for, which included Lewis’ exit at the end of Season 5 and Stoll’s promotion to full series regular. Still very much rooted in the flow of the saga is Maggie Siff (“Sons of Anarchy”) as psychiatrist Wendy Rhoades, who has stayed on as performance coach at the company, despite the misgivings she has about Prince.

Wendy continues to have a confidant for her concerns in Mike “Wags” Wagner (David Costabile), Axe’s former deputy who also remains on Prince’s staff. Still present as well is Taylor Mason (Asia Kate Dillon), the non-binary financial wizard who often posed a major challenge for Axe, and whose skills also have been retained by Prince.

Siff has spent the past month starring in an Off-Broadway staging of Tennessee Williams’ “Orpheus Descending,” which she terms “quite a swerve” from the “Billions” work that she finished recently. Despite the writers’ strike, the show was able to complete its last season, and Siff allows that it was “a labored process. Everybody wanted to be respectful and honor picket lines, and it was really a matter of taking it day by day for the final month, but we finished it.” (Note: This interview took place before the SAG-AFTRA actors’ strike.)

The coda that “Billions” puts on Wendy’s story satisfies Siff: “There’s always been this thing of her being caught between two forces: Chuck and Axe. I think the beautiful thing about Michael Prince coming in, and the time she really was given to be with herself, it allowed her to carve a different kind of path. I do feel really good about where she’s able to end, and I’ll just say that I think Wendy (ends up) sort of her own person … truly independent of all of the forces she’s been knocked around by, despite her best efforts.”

Created by executive producers Brian Koppelman, David Levien and Andrew Ross Sorkin, “Billions” is scheduled to have several spinoffs: “Billions: Miami,” “Millions” and “Trillions.” After being a regular on FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” previously, Siff isn’t necessarily looking to jump into another series, though the right material could alter that thinking (“I just don’t know how to answer that right now,” she says). However, she has confidence that the makers of “Billions” know what they’re doing in expanding that concept’s universe.

“I think Brian and Dave could spin this thing many, many different ways if they want to,” she says. “There’s certainly lots of story to tell, and there are great characters who can come back or circle through. (‘Billions’) has carved out a niche and a style, and it’s got such a good, smart spirit. And there’s a lot of room in our culture to be talking about finance and money, and what people are doing with it, and what it looks like from the inside. I think they could spin this off as much as they want. It’s just a question of how much of an appetite they have for it.”

Whale Nation: Directed by Jean-Albert Lievre

They’re Earth’s biggest creatures, yet still, we know very little about them. Jean-Albert Lievre’s astounding documentary, based on the revolutionary book by Heathcote Williams, explores the rich and complex societies of whales and what we must do to protect them.\

It's hard to reinvent the nature documentary, but Whale Nation takes an experimental twist to the classic nature documentary. With a killer soundtrack, beautiful cinematography, and poetry to vibe with, I was liking this new take on nature. However, in the 30 minutes of the documentary, it becomes pretentious by telling the audience, "fuck you and humanity."Don't get me wrong, that message is somewhat warranted, but it's done in such a tone-deaf manner that it turned me off from the film. I've seen numerous documentaries handle that theme better than this one. Other than that, this film is just Whale vibes.

Disney, will you please release the Star Wars Holiday Special? This documentary makes me want to watch this mess of a special. From the beginning, you tell this documentary was made by passionate Star Wars fans. Their enthusiasm shined in every word they said as they discussed how this disaster came to be. They masterfully break down every wrong step that led to this disaster in an entertaining manner. It's informative and hysterical. All Star Wars fans should watch this documentary as soon as it's released because it's an absolute blast.

It's Only Life After All

An intimate look into the lives of one of the most iconic folk bands in America, the Indigo Girls.

If you have not heard of the Indigo Girls, their song Galileo is a fantastic introduction to the pair. It's Only Life After All is a fascinating documentary showcasing the personal lives of one of the most iconic folk bands in America. It's moving and masterfully showcases why the Indigo Girls are so impactful, even to this day. However, it is a standard music documentary that doesn't do anything new with this style and genre of filmmaking. Overall, if you love the Indigo Girls, you are going to love this.

For the second time in a week, the Writers Guild of America has shuttered Billions.

Staking out sites in New York City’s Chelsea and Williamsburg neighborhoods, the striking scribes prevented the Wall Street drama from setting up for planned location shoots. There were about 100 WGA members and supporters at each location, including WGA member Amy Schumer in Brooklyn and Edie Falco in Manhattan.

“We just shut down Billions,” a WGA member screamed out earlier this afternoon as fellow picketers cheered – as you can see below.

Having lost a day Wednesday, it is unknown when Billions will start up again. Right now, it is an ASAP situation, I’m told.

Admittedly targeted by the WGA East, the Brian Koppelman, David Levien  and Andrew Ross Sorkin created series was previously unplugged for several hours on May 4 by the guild. On that occasion, Billions cast and crew members initially refused to cross the picket line outside Seret Studios in Brooklyn.  The next day, the Showtime series was in the union spotlight again, this time in Manhattan where Billions was filming. While the May 5 picketing didn’t shut the Paul Giamatti, Maggie Siff, Corey Stoll and Damien Lewis-led show down, it certainly put them on notice.

The attempted on-site shoot near 26th and 11th close to the Chelsea Piers Golf Club was near where Billions had been filming on May 5 — this time with a different outcome.

Earlier Wednesday, the WGA East sent out a call on social media for more bodies to join the Williamsburg action. A call-out that garnered a fast and large response, sources tell me.

Thought significantly smaller than the WGA West, the approximately 4,700-strong WGA East has been strategically effective since the scribes’ strike started on May 2 in identifying on-going high-profile productions and putting the pressure on. Along with Billions and the postponed Daredevil: Born Again, the likes of Ryan Murphy’s latest American Horror Story installment has been among the productions witnessing a constant NYC picketing presence in recent days, as have venues housing the HBO and Amazon.

Showtime parent company Paramount Global could not be reached for comment on the latest Billions shut down. If or when we hear from them, we will update this post. Meanwhile, back on Billions, spinoffs are in the offering, but the seventh season does look set to be the show’s last — if they can finish it.

Federal grants account for billions of dollars of NYC's annual budget, and the city has threatened to sue over any move to defund it

New York City is one of three places that "have permitted violence and destruction of property to persist and have refused to undertake reasonable measures to counteract criminal activities," leading to its designation as an "anarchist jurisdiction," the Justice Department said Monday.

Rather than idle words, the designation has potential financial consequences. President Trump issued a memo earlier this month directing the DOJ to identify jurisdictions that, in its view, were not enforcing the law appropriately. Designated cities could lose their federal funding.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo minced no words in responding to the DOJ assessment.

“I understand the politics, but when you try to manipulate and distort government agencies to play politics, which is what the Trump administration has done from day one … this is more of the same," Cuomo said on a conference call with reporters. “The president can’t supersede the law and say I’m going to make those funds basically discretionary funds, which is what he would have to do.”

“If they actually do this, we will challenge it legally, and they will lose once again," he added.

Trump's Sept. 2 order gives the director of the Office of Management and Budget 30 days to issue guidance to federal agencies on restricting eligibility for federal grants for the cities on the DOJ list. Such grants make up a huge portion of NYC's already strapped annual budget -- more than $7 billion in fiscal 2021 alone, or 7.5% of the city's projected total revenue.

In justifying its decision, the DOJ cited New York City's rising gun violence, cuts to the NYPD's budget, and moves by various district attorneys not to prosecute charges related to protests earlier this summer. Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington were also hit with the same designation.

Both the city and the state have previously threatened to sue the federal government over the possible DOJ classification, which Mayor Bill de Blasio reiterated Monday.

“I was out in Elmhurst Queens this morning, I saw peace, tranquility, I saw people going about their business, people excited that it’s the first day of school – I saw anything but anarchy. This is just another one of President Trump’s games,” De Blasio said at his daily news conference. “It’s insulting to the people of New York City and his effort to withhold our funding is unconstitutional.”
