7. Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus)

The Carolina Wren has recently become a favorite of mine. They have such an immediately recognizable song that will never fail to get me to look out the closest window when I hear it. Today, one even decided to take a seat in one of my plant pots for a bit, I wonder if she's looking for a place to nest!

Carolina Wren (Thryothorus ludovicianus)

If you live in the Eastern US and you know anything about birds, you know this guy. In fact, even people who don't know about birds often recognize this wren and its cheerful, bubbly song. Carolina Wrens do not tolerate harsh winters and do not migrate, so their range is restricted by how cold an area will get in the winter. If they can survive, males and females often remain in the same territory year round, with males singing frequently throughout the winter to remind all the other wren where his territory is.

All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's BBL. Permission to share images was granted by Phillips Tract Banding Station (PTBS).
