Currently at The James Museum in St. Pete, is From Far East to West: The Chinese American Frontier, an informative show that includes many beautiful paintings. There’s so much history in America that often doesn’t get taught in school. This is a great opportunity to learn about this immigration story through artwork as well as text.

From the museum about the exhibition-

While European American settlers gradually pushed the United States frontier westward throughout the 1800s, the West coast of the country was developing independently as well. Accelerated by the discovery of gold mid-century, the population boom included Chinese immigrants who crossed the Pacific Ocean to California.

Most 19th century Chinese immigrants came to their new country from the coastal Canton region (province of Guangdong today) in southeastern China. Starting over on a different continent away from familiar surroundings and culture would be challenging, but for many decades anti-Chinese hostility and exclusion laws made settling in the United States even more difficult. The achievements of Chinese immigrants paved a path for future generations and are a testament to strength and perseverance.

The foundation for the exhibition highlights narratives of Chinese America from the 1850s to the 1930s. The paintings-all created by Chinese Americans in the 21st century-reflect inspiration from this history. The painters are also fueled by their own, more recent immigration stories to the United States after China’s Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) and their rigorous art training in the government-sponsored movement of Socialist Realism. After China opened to the rest of the world in the late 1970s, many Chinese artists-like Mian Situ, Jie Wei Zhou, Benjamin Wu, Hung Liu, and Z.S. Liang, all featured here were inspired to immigrate to the United States in search of greater opportunity.

Here, these artists’ historical interpretations speak to culture, identity, community, and resilience. Related objects and ephemera from the period support these stories. From the Gold Rush to Angel Island, this exhibition reveals often overlooked but significant contributions and perspectives of Chinese immigrants that deepen our understanding of U.S. history.

Another name for the series could be the cat’ty concubines. Seriously. The entire series is made up of a man the marquis (played by Wallace Chung) who has a lot of concubines that try to outdo one another in all different sinister ways. It also has a. hateful terrible mother who was the one who picked the concubines in the first place who who apparently we are supposed to sympathize with?. For me it takes a handful episodes to get into, but then it becomes fun and enjoyable where you root for the good side watching everything unfold. Yes it might be predictable and cliche but it’s entertaining as heck. Unfortunately it doesn’t last long and towards the last ten episodes it falls of the rails again and becomes meh. Still would recommend it though for a watch just keep the fast forward button handy.

Is there any deeper meaning to Lan Wangji stealing the fragrance pouch Mian Mian gave to Wei Wuxian?

Well, yes.

He's jealous of that Mianmian hussy and wants Wei Wuxian to marry him and not her.

Hahahahaha!

Ahem. Let me explain. Flower or fragrant pouches are one among the 12 proposal gifts of ancient China.

Here it is, number 7 among the 12.

The meaning behind the flower satchel is 寄情寄思 (lit. to entrust my love and longing). So a woman giving a man a flower satchel she made in ancient times means, 'Marry me, dude!' And if a man asks for a satchel made by the woman's own hands, it means he's saying, 'You so hot, baby! Marry me!'

The flower/fragrance satchels as a token of great love and promise are most known through two separate legends:

1.Yang Guifei and Emperor Tang Xuanzhong. In which, after Yang Guifei died during wartime, only her flower satchel was reclaimed. The rest of her body was reduced to shattered bones. When he was given this satchel, Emperor Tang Xuanzhong cried and kept it in his sleeves for the rest of his life. This legend was made into a poem 太真香囊子 (The Pouch is steeped in Fragrance) by the poet Zhang Hu.

2. The Book of Jin Jia Wu recorded Jia Chong's youngest daughter Jia Wu falling in love with his lowly aide Han Shou. To discreetly confess her love, Jia Wu made a satchel and gifted it to Han Shou. When Jia Wu detected the familiar scent of his daughter's fragrance recipe on Han Shou's body, he immediately cottoned onto their feelings. Luckily for the pair, Jia Chong was a considerably open-minded man for the time, so he blessed their love despite the gap in social stations and allowed the two to wed.

So Wei Wuxian asking Mianmian for a fragrance sachet is tantamount to asking her to marry him in the eyes of many, and at least very, very flirtatious. That's why Mianmian reacted the way she did.

And this was in front of Lan Wangji.... Imagine how Lan Wangji felt. So it wasn't without reason (other than the fact Lan Wangji was at a very low point in his life then) that Lan Wangji reacted like he did.

So Lan Wangji stealing WWX's fragrance pouch and keeping it on his body for decades after is equivalent to saying, 'You will not marry her. You will marry me!' without actually saying it.

That is to say, Hanguang Jun might not look like it, but he would fit right at home in one of those scandalous, overly dramatic telenovelas where the love rivals duke it out by bitchslapping each other. You just need to speak his language (of actions) to see this.

You might recognize most of the production team as the people who worked on the MDZS audio drama, so I’m very assured that they will only have grown more experienced. Tbh I’m a little surprised by the lead VAs...excited to hear what their performances will be like!

Even more exciting: apparently the audio drama has been adapted from the revised edition of TGCF which includes 100k extra words!!!

It all started when a fellow professor saw Shen Wei stretching after having a particularly awful day. Apparently the other professor recognized it as a qigong stretch. Shen Wei did keep track of things enough to be aware of the qigong fad that had appeared lately across both Dragon City and China in general. Ok, maybe a little longer ago than lately, but in the grand scheme of things, within a human lifetime, and a young human lifetime at that. They should have been suspecting a trap. The tomb was too easy to get into. Admittedly, it was far out in the middle of nowhere. But in terms of actually being able to find it and climb into it once there, it was pretty easy. Tombs like that tended to have traps. So I like to start mid scene/mid-action, and then go back and explain/scene-describe what's going on (or just move forward from the mid-scene point). Other than that, I don't know. I tend to try to match the mood I am trying to go for, usually unsuccessfully. I should go back and read the source material more before redrafting in the future.

So! Some more about that Guardian/DMBJ crossover! (The one where we roll with Wu Xie’s Reunion looks.)

Shen Wei is completely neutral about having a doppelgänger. He was startled at first, sure, but after a through background check to ascertain that Wu Xie wasn’t Gui Mian’s illicit offspring or anything, he basically just shrugs and moves on with his life.

Not so much Wu Xie.

First of all, for a long time he only ever knew Shen Wei as the Ghostslayer (as did all of his friends), who never showed his face and when he finally met Professor Shen, it was on accident.

See the Iron Triangle is at Dragon City University to ask a professor (friend of a friend of a friend of San Shu) about this ancient text they found, which could have been a clue on their latest quest. And, well... people keep giving them these looks. Really weird Looks.

...And then this man passes them. A man who looks exactly like Wu Xie. Sure he’s dressed more formally than what Wu Xie normally prefers but otherwise looks exactly like him. And he just looks Wu Xie in the eye, nods and walks away.

Wu Xie flips his lid. That man obviously knows him because he wasn’t surprised about their creepy resemblance at all and Wu Xie HAS HAD IT with these goddamn switcheroos and stolen identities and lookalikes and what the FUCK is going on THIS GODDAMN TIME? Did he not do a through enough job with the Wangs? Are they coming for him? For his loved ones? Can the universe cut him some slack already???

...Meanwhile Shen Wei spends like five seconds mentally kicking himself for forgetting to act shocked and then forgets about the incident. Truth is, he just had to grant e-mail sending privileges to a student whose puppy kept destroying her hand-written essays. Which of course means that Shen Wei will have to deal with e-mails for at least the rest of the semester (or until the stupid beast learns some manners) so he was in a bit of a Mood.

Truth Mask

Well, since this is without context I’m going to interpret it lol! Manhua ‘Truth Mask’ protagonist Wu Mian has a mask that makes everyone around him agree with him. And he still won’t confess to the girl he likes.

He is different from Ousuke in the sense that Ousuke doesn’t need a magic mask. He investigates, thinks, considers and proposes to his peers his ideas. More importantly, he puts in more work than any of them.

Only Ousuke attended and listened to other preliminaries performances, to get a read on the competition.
